AROMASIN  (EXEMESTANE):  This medication is used to treat certain types of breast cancer (such as hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer) in women after menopause. Exemestane is also used to help prevent the cancer from returning. Some breast cancers are made to grow faster by a natural hormone called estrogen. Exemestane decreases the amount of estrogen the body makes and helps to slow or reverse the growth of these breast cancers. Exemestane is usually not used in women of childbearing age.   FDA Approval Date: 1999-10-21 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  Stage 2 Breast Cancer I have been on this drug for 6yrs 6mths and intend to complete 7yrs, could be longer. Dr says it could return, so taking this 2 more years makes me feel more comfortable. Weight is kept ok with reasonable healthy eating and walking 30 mins a day 5 days a week and 2 classes of aerobic / Pilates. It takes a great deal of effort, but after I feel so much better with no stiffness and aches until end of the day. F 57 6 years

3  Stage 2 hormone receptive breast ca Took Tamoxifen for two years-switched to Aromasin third year at doc's suggestion. Less dangerours side effects. Bones good. Horrible hot flushes and lack of sleep becasuse of. Vaginal area dried up. Gained 30 pounds immediately and have less energy (lack of sleep-exercising less?)Memory loss-have a horible time remebering names of even people I know well sometimes. Went off for over two months and slept better and had almost normal skin in vaginal area. Checked in with oncologist who suggested that as my hot flushes were not a great deal less than before, I might consider going back on as we don't really know if I would recurr or not without it. Cost has gone up dramatically, but husband does not want to take a chance of recurrance. Memory loss is my greatest concern, other wise can deal with the rest. (KY gel) F 60 5 years

1  Stage 3C Breast Cancer Crippling, terrible arthritis-like pain, insomnia, nausea, post-nasal drip, thinning hair on crown, skin rashes, fatigue hot flashes, blood clot in groin, and liver problems. Oh, and my favorite side effect? I gained 30-35 pounds in a matter of months & CAN'T get it off! I started taking the Aromatase Inhibitors in 2009. My docs tried to tell me that my bone-muscle-joint pain was because of my age (60s) and my weight. It was just ordinary arthritis they all said. Hogwash! I am so tired of doctors laying every health problem on my age or my weight when it is one or more of the drugs I am on. Here's how I know my symptoms are Aromasin drug-related: Every time I take an Aromasin Medication Vacation, most of my Aromasin side effects go away. And, I started on Arimdex and then Femara and had the SAME side effects. I stayed on Aromasin since there were no other options. I have not had a 1-month vacation from the Aromasin for 4 years, but when I did, my pain decreased. Since I reached my 5 years on this awful drug, the choice is mine to stay on it or go off. I decided to take another vacation. Within a week, my pain is nearly all gone and my other symptoms are also improving. I can't believe how much better I feel. I feel like I have my life back. I don't know if I will go back on Aromasin or not. What's the point of taking a drug that makes your daily life a hell? Not what I call a quality life. Why can't they make a drug with fewer side effects for a change? F 65 5 years

4  Stage I cancer Aches, joint pain, fatigue, felt mentally foggy Initially began with Femara but due to side effects switched to Aromasin. Side effects about the same though. After 41/2 years I've discontinued usage. Anything that makes a person feel this bad must be kicking cancer's butt!!!! (Trying to look on the bright side!) F 61 4 years

3  breast cancer Must decide if the side effects are interupting the quality of your life. Muscle stiffness and joint pain limit my activities. Doctors don't always tell you side effects you might experience. Report every physical and emotional change to your physician. F 64 4 years

3  Invasive Lobular BC, Stage 3 Side effects - due to Aromasin or not? Thinning hair facial hair ( particularly in last year) vagine dryness -almost immediately libido - significantly diminished - within two years insomnia - since begining joint pains in feet, hips and achiness in legs - since beginning hot flashes/night sweats - have diminshed neuropathy in fingers distortion in one hand of fingers with large lump on thumb (just this past year) carpal tunnel Bloody-awful unexplained shoulder and neck pain which extended into head and facial muscles and jaw for 6 months Now jsut diagnosed with mild degenerative osteoarthritis which is causing me to walk with a cane Bone scan in 20011 showed above average bone density for age. Still alive I started tamoxifen in 2006 and was changed to Aromisin in 2008. I am on it optionally now, but I am truly scared to go off it as I am sure it is keeping me alive and micromestastes at bay. Quality of life is an issue thought and right now I cannot do the things I have enjoyed all my life, including dance. It might not be Aromasin but certainly from reading previuos posts, I am wondering. F 55 4 years

2  Stage 2 Breast Cancer I started on Arimidex after lumpectomy, chemo & radiation. I didn't last long - 6 months - felt like 80 years old. My oncologist switched me to aromasin. It was tons time better! 2 years later - in last 6 months- I have severe pains and need Tylenol or ibuprofen daily. Legs, hips mostly. Most recently, I can't close my right hand into a fist and middle finger is "trigger" finger. Working out at gym seems to help. Feel sluggish but my family doctor has me on phentermine (30 mg) and I take it almost daily unless I sleep in. (insomnia if you take too late in day). Tired of pain and not being able to walk fast but will tough it out if necessary!! Question I have is does anyone ever get these little shots of pain randomly all over every once in a while?  4  Breast cancer stage 3B ILC Achy joints, stomach issues, some insomnia Not sure how much this has helped. Was very ill with Arimidex, couldn't eat without diarrhea so doctor switched me to Aromasin. Most days I ache in my joints. Wonder if other issues I have, i.e. Stomach problems, insomnia, are related to it as well. Three more years on it seems like forever but am afraid not to take it. F 60 2 years

4  Stage 2 breast cancer Tired, short-term memory loss, travelling pain throughout body, frozen thumb, stiff fingers. On tamoxifen 1 1/2 years and aromasin about 2 years. Doctor switched me to aromasin due to estrogen driven tumor. Increased to 600-800 IU of Vitamin D. This eliminated the travelling pain. Frozen thumb is pretty much back to normal. INCREASED VITAMIN D REALLY HELPED THE PAIN! Eliminated carbonated drinks containing phosphoric acid. F 68 2 years

3  Stage 3 breast cancer Severe body aches and pains--hips,shoulders, neck, arms, legs, even feet. Craving for carbs, sweets, etc. never before experienced. Occasional periods of sweats, insomnia, high blood pressure. Mild depression and "grouchiness". It is a heinous drug, but according to my oncologist, a life saver, so I will continue to take it.  3  Stage 2a Invasive Ductal Carcinoma Extreme muscle and bone pain that could not be controlled at all with over the counter meds such as Tylenol, Ibuprofen, ASA. Prescribed Meds like Tylenol #3, then Buscopan patch then trimodal provided some relief but not enough. I had all the other side effects listed, it was a total nightmare for me. I have just quit 10 months short of five years. I just can not deal with it any longer. I know it is important to complete your full treatment course on Aromasin but when it becomes so unbearable, you really need to weigh the risks and side effects you have with the drug vs the expected percentage rates for survival by taking the drug. With a mastectomy and chem alone I was told 93% with the five years on Tamoxifen the first year and a half, then Aromasin for the same I was told an additional 3% putting me up to 96%. I feel my survival rate should still be fairly high quoting it 10 months early. F 61 2 years

2  BC Stage IIC invasive Took Tamoxifen for 2 yrs with side effects that included extreme hot flushes, nausea (like morning sickness), horrible insomnia & headaches. Switched to Aromasin for next 2 yrs and it was tolerable for the first 6 months with same side effects as Tamoxifen. Then the bone & joint pain in the outer extremities started. Couldn't get out of a bed or a seated position or do stairs without feeling like a cripple. Mornings were worse & I too had the 'claw' effect with terrible weakness in my hands. Ankles felt fragile, as though the bones would break with the slightest pressure. Once healthy libido disappeared, urogenital system dried up & cholesterol levels tripled, although no change in exercise & diet. Doctor switched me to Femara 2 months ago. After the 1st week, I actually slept for two whole nights & felt awesome! Then the side effects of the Femara kicked in & it's starting to feel the same as with the Aromasin. I'm so thankful to have found this website! Over the last few years, I've so often thought that I was the only one experiencing these awful side effects. Until diagnosis, I was very fit & worked out 5x/week - weights and cardio. I continued to work & work-out even through chemo cycles. Now I feel like a 90 yr old asexual being. Chemo-induced menopause presented its own challenges but these Aromatase-Inhibitor side effects continue to affect the quality of my life. Doctors are quick to offer Rx for side effects but each Rx has its own risks & side effects. It's a domino effect & I just want to feel 'normal' again & get on with my life. It would be so different if we were dealing with a broken arm. An X-ray would show the break, time would heal the fracture & then it would be nothing but a memory. Nobody knows if these AI drugs even work on something we don't even know is or isn't there. Quality vs Quantity of life should be addressed by somebody! F 50 2 years
