AROMASIN  (EXEMESTANE):  This medication is used to treat certain types of breast cancer (such as hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer) in women after menopause. Exemestane is also used to help prevent the cancer from returning. Some breast cancers are made to grow faster by a natural hormone called estrogen. Exemestane decreases the amount of estrogen the body makes and helps to slow or reverse the growth of these breast cancers. Exemestane is usually not used in women of childbearing age.   FDA Approval Date: 1999-10-21 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

2  Follow up to lumpectomy Off and on shoulder pain, extreme depression, tiredness, hot flashes, muscle and bone pain in legs, dizziness, heart palpitations, headache, hair loss, memory problems, extreme sugar cravings I started off with only hot flashes, but now have so many side effects I'm considering going off the drug. Tried to take it every other day, but there was no improvement. The two side effects that affect me the most are the heart palpitations and the depression. I'm also worried about bone loss due to osteoporosis and having already broken a wrist and a hip. F 75 4 months

3  Stage 3 breast cancer Severe body aches and pains--hips,shoulders, neck, arms, legs, even feet. Craving for carbs, sweets, etc. never before experienced. Occasional periods of sweats, insomnia, high blood pressure. Mild depression and "grouchiness". It is a heinous drug, but according to my oncologist, a life saver, so I will continue to take it.  1  To prevent breast cancer recurrence After taking Letrozole for 1 1/2 years with terrible side effects. Was switched 8 months ago to Aromasin. At first I thought this would be the right pill for me. I have severe weight gain, blurry vision at times, thinning hair, restless, painful legs and feet, brain fog, fatigue, having trouble getting up from sitting position, trouble sleeping, difficulty walking and most recently low back pain. Also no ambition to do anything. This is a terrible drug, but afraid to stop it, worried about recurrence. F 70 8 months

1  Stage 1 Breast Cancer I had taken Arimidex for 9 months and had increasing joint and muscle pain. I went off for a month and most side effects resolved. My oncologist switched me to Aromasin. In about 2 weeks the joint pain started coming back and then the swelling of hands, feet plus tiredness. I am a nurse besides a patient and this is so uncomfortable. I am going to go off of this and won't even try Femora. I will give Tamoxifen a try in hopes the joint issues are not a problem. I am very active for my age, have no other health issues and this drug has really affected the quality of my life. I have 4 more years of this type of treatment. My oncologist thinks this is better than Arimidex....Wrong! Hope other patients don't have this experience plus this drug costs more too! I do my research and read. I appreciate these sites with others experiences as it is so supportive. F 69 2 months

1  Had Breast Cancer Stage 1 Within 2 weeks after starting this medication these symptoms set in. Numbness, major joint pain, all fingers/thumb triggering, burning, cannot make a fist in both hands, pain in forearms and now shooting pains in hands. Stopped medication approx. 4 weeks ago but still have these side effects. My Doctor and also the Oncologist were pushing carpel tunnel syn surgery. They seem to have no knowledge of this serious side effect of the medication I was prescribed. Or had their head in the sand. Any suggestions to reverse side effects would be greately appreciated and if anyone can give me an idea of a time frame they got back to normal after stopping this medication,I would welcome that information also.  4  Stage 2 breast cancer Tired, short-term memory loss, travelling pain throughout body, frozen thumb, stiff fingers. On tamoxifen 1 1/2 years and aromasin about 2 years. Doctor switched me to aromasin due to estrogen driven tumor. Increased to 600-800 IU of Vitamin D. This eliminated the travelling pain. Frozen thumb is pretty much back to normal. INCREASED VITAMIN D REALLY HELPED THE PAIN! Eliminated carbonated drinks containing phosphoric acid. F 68 2 years

4  Breast cancer with bone mets I already have serious osteoarthritis, but I'm not feeling worse on the Aromasin. The only side effect I seem to have is extreme insomnia, which is a real problem. Right now this drug is saving my life! After 9 cancer-free years following diagnosis and treatment of Stage IIb ILC in both breasts, I have a recurrence with bone metastases and am now Stage IV with no cure. I took Tamoxifen for 3 years the first time around and had no problems. Then switched to Femara for the worst 6 months of my life. I lasted a week on Arimidex before finally returning to Tamoxifen for the rest of my 5 years. So I started Aromasin 5 months ago with trepidation because of my past history with AI's. My only problem is bad insomnia that I keep trying to deal with. I also receive an injection once a month of Xgeva to strengthen bones and alleviate bone pain. That's probably shielding me from the bone pain others are experiencing. I am so grateful that this drug has decreased my tumor markers 75% in 5 months and gotten them well within normal range. Because of the Xgeva I actually have less arthritis pain, too. Now if I could just sleep better... F 67 5 months

1  Stage 2 Breast Cancer with no node Hot flashes, numbness in arms, nausea, reflux, extreme fatigue and shortness of breath along with anxiety. This is my 3rd cancer drug and the cancer or radiation was not as bad as these drugs. I feel sure if the doctors tried them they would pitch them in the trash can. F 67 4 months

1  Stage 2 ductal carcinoma Painful & achy joints, even finger, wrist, thumb pain. UTIs, although I'm sure my oncologist would disagree with me re: medicine as a cause. My brain feels like it is in a permanent fog state. Was on anastrozole for short time. Joint pain some days almost unbearable. I would sit on the sofa with heating pad. Dr then gave me a hiatus for about two months. Pain got better but didn't go away. Dr then started me on Exemestane (Aromasin). Been on about two months. Had pretty bad joint pain early, then subsided. Only had joint pain periodically. Have noticed lately that discomfort is coming more & more frequently. Had UTI about 2 1/2 months ago & now I have another one. It's weird, but, there are days when I feel normal when I go to the BR. Then like today, I'm miserable feeling pressure everytime I go to the BR. It feels like I have a constant bladder infection. Can anyone else identify with these symptoms? F 67 1 days

2  post Breast Cancer treatment Switched from tamoxifen after significant weight gain - to Arimidex. Experienced severe joint pain. Switched by oncologist to Aromasin. Experienced trigger finger in both thumbs, frozen thumb, can't walk on my feet in the morning. Accupuncture helped the fozen thumb (avoided recommended surgery)and is somewhat helping the feet. Age 66 but feel as if I'VE AGED 20 YEARS. This Rx may be a life saver, but as an estrogen blocker, I am philosophically against it, because I think a woman needs her estrogen every day. Given the side effects of all 3 drugs I've taken I would like to stop all Rx. Trying not to be stupid though. F 66 1 years

2  stage 1 lobular breast cancer Because Arimidex caused so many side effects (I posted several times on the Arimidex page), my doctor suggested trying Aromasin. After taking just one pill, I had painful, sudden reflux causing painful, long-lasting burning in my esophagus. Arimidex had also caused many digestive problems, but not the terrible burning. The original side effects from Arimidex were nearly gone when I started Aromasin, but it made the digestion problems start all over again: reflux, burning, bloating, gas all the time, smelly stools, and loose stools. With this much discomfort and interference with my daily activities, I stopped at one pill and will wait till symptoms improve and try again. If this does not work, I am stopping altogether. My surgeon is wonderful and agreed with me that existing in misery in order to take a pill that may (or may not) help with a recurrence of cancer isn't much of a life. I'd rather be functional and enjoy life to the fullest than be miserable for five years taking a medicine that my body is clearly rejecting! It concerns me that this type of medicine may have long lasting effects on our bodies. Reading the posts for Arimidex and Femara nearly bring tears to my eyes -- we are not making this up, yet it seems that we have to defend ourselves if we have a doctor who refuses to acknowledge with compassion what we are going through. That's why I quit two oncologists and have a new, very understanding and empathetic doctor. What I want as a patient is to be heard. F 66 1 days

1  post breast cancer arthritis in my hips, which was a nuisance but did not really affect my quality of life, has been greatly exacerbated. I cannot put on my socks or tie shoes. Pains in hips, knees, shins and feet at night. Difficulty rolling over in bed and getting out of chairs. I also have carpal tunnel symptoms. I am having a trial period of a month off the medication. I have been off for three weeks. I have been going to physical therapy three times a week for the past ten weeks, and have finally seen quite a bit of improvement the last week or two. Also have hot flashes. My first breast cancer (2002) had no estrogen involvement. My second, this past year, had a very small amount. I am thinking of asking the oncologist to take me off this medicine when I see her next week after my four week trial dropping the exemestane. F 66 4 months
