SUBOXONE  (BUPRENORPHINE HYDROCHLORIDE; NALOXONE HYDROCHLORIDE):  This medication contains 2 medicines: buprenorphine and naloxone. It is used to treat opioid (narcotic) dependence/addiction. Buprenorphine belongs to a class of drugs called mixed opioid agonist-antagonists. Buprenorphine helps prevent withdrawal symptoms caused by stopping other opioids. Naloxone is a narcotic antagonist that blocks the effect of opioids and can cause severe opioid withdrawal when injected. Withdrawal is less likely when naloxone is taken by mouth, dissolved under the tongue, or dissolved on the inside of the cheek. It is combined with buprenorphine to prevent abuse and misuse (injection) of this medication. This combination medication is used as part of a complete treatment program for drug abuse (such as compliance monitoring, counseling, behavioral contract, lifestyle changes).   FDA Approval Date: 2002-10-08 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  Opiate addiction Always tired, anti social, no energy, mood swings, don't feel normal. There are too many side effects to take Suboxone long term, I go to sleep on Friday after work and don't get out of bed until Monday morning when I have to go back to work, I never want to do anything or go anywhere, I'm not sure how I'm going to get off this med but if I want any kind of life back it's something I have to do, if anyone reading this is thinking about taking Suboxone please do it short term, don't let your Dr push you to keep taking it because the side effects are horrible, F 47 14 years

3  Oxycontin replacement None Never take this drug for more than a week or two. It's VERY difficult to kick. I thought I would be a "lifer" but didn't like the stigma associated with it every time I sought medical help so I slowly tapered all the way down to 1/2 mg. per day. You'd think that was cool, but jumping off that last 1/2 has been horrible and after 6 weeks am still experiencing primary withdrawal symptoms. Better to kick whatever else you're on and use a support group. Unless you're just willing to deal with it. I realize it probably helped me at first but be warned about long-term use. M 65 14 years

Instead, you will become a slave to this medicine, just like your d**g of choice. Withdrawal from this med is the same as opiates - just get it over with & finf your new self! F 41 13 years

3  Remain sober None that I was aware of at the time I was on Suboxone for 12 years. Started at 24 mgs, then 16, then 8 and maintained 4 mgs for many years. My family and I recently relocated 700 miles south and I really didn’t want to carry this burden with me. The burden of always needing my meds and having a Suboxone doctor (not to mention the cost, with private insurance the appts are expensive). I haven’t taken my Suboxone in 11 days with the help of Clonidine prescribed by my doctor. The first three days were physically uncomfortable, but the Clonidine prevented 60% of the withdrawal symptoms. Suboxone should NEVER be used long term for recovery. It WILL numb your emotions and you’ll never truly be in recovery. It may seem as though your life is together, but once you stop all those feelings and emotions come back full force. The most difficult part now is anxiety, insomnia, tremendous mood swings, shaky hands and a real uncertain feeling about what might happen next. Suboxone is a miracle drug for very short term use, but be warned, it is just as difficult, if not more difficult to quit then full opiate agonists. F 36 12 years

5  Opiate dependence Fatique Constipation I hit rock bottom from my addiction. I was shooting up anything to make me feel better. I had no job, no roof over my head, no car or license, non-custodial rights to my daughter. My family wouldn't talk to me and my bank terminated my accounts. I remember only having my purse, my duffle bag of clothes and only a few dollars to my name and not knowing where I was going to sleep that night. We won't go into my criminal background, jail, rehab or the degrading, shameful things I wish I could forget. Since I've been on Suboxone, my life has done a complete 180°! I've gotten everything back. I own my own car, I have 50% custody of my daughter after fighting back (because I straitened out my life). I've been pre-approved for a mortgage I'll share with my daughter, fiancé and 11 month old bundle of joy. I've cleared my criminal record and don't even have SR22 on my license anymore. I work as a professional dental assistant and make acquaintances and even friends with some lawyers, police officers, entrepreneurs, doctors, politicians....All sorts of people I never thought I would cross paths with in my prior life. People who know me now would be shocked to know of my past or even know that I am taking Suboxone. There's a lot of speculation and opinions about this drug, but it changed my life for the better times ten!! Who knows where my life would be if I hadn't made this life altering decision!!  4  Opioid addiction Constipation, headache sometimes, dryness, low sex drive. Drowsiness. This medicine really helped me for the first few years but I have noticed some problems with taking it (see side effects) I am asking if anyone has had joint problems, particularly in the knees?  3  Subutex I was unfortunately addicted to Stadol a nasal spray given to me via Neurologist in 2012 that I never used until 2015. It was prescribed as the 3rd medication to be used after the first med which was Tylenol 3, and the second med was Maxalt did not work. Never had to use it until the last week in August 2015 when the other 2 did not work. THIS entire situation has nearly ruined my life and created such barriers to having t o live.. either in withdrawal forever or on Subutex to live with out the hanks of addiction and withdrawal.. deadly constipation fr fr BE CAREFUL on this medication as you wont be able to have or produce a bowel movement. It can be life threatening if you are not careful and ensure that you have at the least an occasional bowel movement. I have been on Subutex now for 9 years. I haven't had a period /menstruation ever since not realizing I really wasn't really going in to menopause @ 38 yrs of age. Now that I have finally came off of Subutex yet living every single day in the throws of withdrawal I have started my period/menstruation 9 years later... and much older too now. Heads up to all who have to use Subutex that are women. THIS medication STOPS our periods. SO this is the downfall and it foils with our hormones as it does this. For any one who happens to be addicted to opioids and wants children this is a downfall. Clearly the medication works yet it definitely does STOP your period for as long as you take it. F 47 9 years

Patient History
2  Get off Vicodin The first three years were great I had plenty of energy work 50 hours a day and even went to the gym 3 to 5 days a week. After that I started to lose energy and started taking Adderall to make up for it. Before I knew it I needed Xanax also to come down from the Adderall. It was a big revolving door I needed the Suboxone for the pain that Adderall for the energy in the Xanax to come down from the Adderall to sleep at night. I'm still on the Suboxone and have tried to fight through withdrawal symptoms at least five different times to get off it. One time I had 30 days clean and could not take it no more. After 30 days I was still in pain with no energy and very depressed so went right back to the Suboxone Adderall and Xanax. The withdrawals from Suboxone r 10× worse then any withdrawals I ever had from the vicodin. At least I could go to work if I was out of Vicodin when I don't have my Suboxone I can't even get out of bed or hardly walk and that is just the physical part the mental part is even worse. I have definitely seen a loss in testosterone energy, I hardly talk to anybody or leave the house anymore so I know it has a effect on your brain. I also quit my job of 15 years which I really regret now. I'm not trying to blame anybody but I don't think Suboxone was made to stay on for 9 years. It was new when I first got on it and now I'm really regretting even trying it. The doctor should have thrown me in a inpatient program for two weeks and I would have been off the V Either the doctors did not know what they were doing when the Suboxone first hit the shelves or they didn't care. My doctor would charge me more than any other patient just for the Suboxone treatment at $200 each appointment plus my insurance would never cover the Suboxone at all and I was paying at least 200 to $300 a month just for the Suboxone. It's way cheaper to stay on Street opiates and I believe less harmful but that's just my opinion. I also had a doctor telling me he could no longer prescribe Suboxone to me because he did not renew his certificate and just threw me out on the street. Most doctors care more about their pocketbook then they really care about their patients and I hope someone sues the pants off the maker of Suboxone someday I will definitely jump on board!  2  Pain management extreme weight gain, hormonal insufficiencies especially involving the adrenals, problems with teeth, lack of energy, completely lost my edge and my ability to deal with stress, put me in early menopause and up until that point horrible monthly problems. These issues left me unable to work for two years so far. It took me 3 years to taper and quit. Horrible withdraws even when jumping at a super low dose after long taper. Still no energy two and a half months after quitting! This drug might be good for addicts and it kept me working for 6.5 years after my pain made it too hard to work but it comes at a price. I believe I was on too high a dose for too long, especially for pain. F 49 8 years

2  I had a Big ass monkey on by back. Was great in the first year. Then I thought I was normal for the last 6.5 years. Now reality is giving me a bitch-slap worst feeling ever. OMG Like I said Donkey Kong had a permanent residence on my back from age 20-25. If I could go back and throw one of those damned barrels at the 20yr old me the day I took that first Watson 540. Who knows where I'd be. But unfortunately I can not. Please take it from me. I've read lots of these forums over the years. Some of them will scare you too death from the withdrawal of quitting suboxone. Then every ass hole, that only had a short binge run with what ever drug they took, to get them on suboxone. Will say it's easy if you just... and only... you just gotta want too get clean... I call them the live at home free loaders who just need attention, so they claim to be opiate dependant. Then have the nerve to say how easy it was. I am know doctor, I am just your average middle class American, with a wife, 14yr daughter, 10yr son. Full time job. And bills that come to my mailbox every day I wish I had the luxury of saying TIME OUT!!! "I'M READY TO CLEAN UP NOW". Thence a week later hit that little red button at staples. "THAT WAS EASY". To those of you who have done it (for real). I know you won't take offense, cause you KNOW. Now that I got that out of my system. Hope this can help someone fresh in the suboxne game. Wish I had read or heard Of course when I got started in the program I was a full fledged addict. I was taking $50 - $100 a day in mostly pain meds. But anything would do. I had a great job so the supply never ran out. I was you M 33 8 years

5  IV opiate addiction Wonderful drug...after shooting up for years, I did a 3 day detox with Methadone. Shortly thereafter, I relapsed and heard about Sub. My initial detox I was given Subutex, I was sent home on 16 mg Suboxone. I tried shooting up after that, but felt absolutely no "high" as the Sub blocked it. I learned real fast it's a waste of time to use while on Sub. Eventually I weaned myself down to 4mg, and maintain that dose now. If you truly want to get clean this is the drug. It gives me absolutely no high, and the only time I have side effects is if I skip doses and start to withdraw. Another positive, it actually gives some pain relief, as I used to require pain meds for back problems. In my opinion, nobody should be using Methadone, this is much safer and effective. F 42 6 years

5  Oxy addiction None Was using oxy (approx. 60mg/day) for about 6-7 yrs. Took Sub (started 12mg/day never more) w/o too much of an issue. Started cutting down and just kept going until I was down to about 1mg - 3x/day. I kept 1mg pcs on me and one day I realized it had been 3 days without taking and that was it. 6 years
