SUBOXONE  (BUPRENORPHINE HYDROCHLORIDE; NALOXONE HYDROCHLORIDE):  This medication contains 2 medicines: buprenorphine and naloxone. It is used to treat opioid (narcotic) dependence/addiction. Buprenorphine belongs to a class of drugs called mixed opioid agonist-antagonists. Buprenorphine helps prevent withdrawal symptoms caused by stopping other opioids. Naloxone is a narcotic antagonist that blocks the effect of opioids and can cause severe opioid withdrawal when injected. Withdrawal is less likely when naloxone is taken by mouth, dissolved under the tongue, or dissolved on the inside of the cheek. It is combined with buprenorphine to prevent abuse and misuse (injection) of this medication. This combination medication is used as part of a complete treatment program for drug abuse (such as compliance monitoring, counseling, behavioral contract, lifestyle changes).   FDA Approval Date: 2002-10-08 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  Oxycontin replacement None Never take this drug for more than a week or two. It's VERY difficult to kick. I thought I would be a "lifer" but didn't like the stigma associated with it every time I sought medical help so I slowly tapered all the way down to 1/2 mg. per day. You'd think that was cool, but jumping off that last 1/2 has been horrible and after 6 weeks am still experiencing primary withdrawal symptoms. Better to kick whatever else you're on and use a support group. Unless you're just willing to deal with it. I realize it probably helped me at first but be warned about long-term use. M 65 14 years

5  Prescription opiate addiction No side effects Suboxone saved my life. I was addicted to prescription opiates for pain. It was a vicious merry go round I was on for thirty odd years and I thought I would die that way. Then one day I was introduced to Suboxone and my life changed from the first dose. No side effects ever! I have been so lucky. Also I am in Australia and Suboxone is free here. I pick up my doses every week and it costs me nothing. I hate to think where I would be now without Suboxone in my life. Also Sub. has a pain killing substance which helps with my chronic pain and that coupled with Topamax, I have never felt better. It has turned my life around. I plead with everyone to please give it a go, it is a wonder drug and who cares if you are swapping one drug for another, it has none of the horrid connotations of the opiates. My life is now 'normal'. F 60 4 years

3  Opiate withdwawal This opiate will rob one of ambition, and if constant procrastination, is your life goal, go for it. The greedy doctors overprescribe it, which causes many more, to become hampered through the street dealer, and prison systems. One week, should be the duration of prescribing. Any longer, and you just accepted a nastier addiction. 60 2 years

3  oxycodone Rx discontinued this caused a bit of insomnia at first. I need to keep hydrated because I don't feel thirsty enough to get the desired amount of water in my system. this medication has stopped my opiate abuse. I was known to law enforcement as a drug dealer when I was prescribed oxy. I am now leading a clean and legal lifestyle. I now need to have a plan for detox as the clinic I go to charges me $400 a month which is substantial for me. I know I need to give up the expense of smoking both cigarretes and pot. if by doing this I Will be able to offset some of my cost, the clinic I attend will lend support to this endeavor.  1  Depression Intense dizziness, profuse sweating, within an hour of taking this medicine I was on the floor in a pool of vomit. severe nausea and disorientation. I was unable to get up off the floor by myself and had to call for help and paramedics. Spent 4 hours in emergency room. Severe abdominal cramps and chills. Symptoms eased after receiving a shot of morphine. All this from a 2mg dose! ER doctors did not believe that this drug was prescribed for depression and I had to wait for blood and urine tests before they gave me the morphine to counteract the suboxone. The wait was agony. This was clearly a time when I thought I was going to die. IF THIS DRUG IS OFFERED TO YOU FOR SOMETHING OTHER THAN DRUG DEPENDACY-- GET A SECOND OR THIRD OPINION. IT MAY SAVE YOUR LIFE. M 57 1 times

3  Opiod addiction Anxiety. Moody. Too much sleep or insomnia. Terrible sweating. I feel a little crazy most days. Terrible anxiety, depression, irritable, a drenching sweat and either too sleepy or I cant sleep. but I just can't be sure it's the suboxone as Dr says any side effects should have passed by now. But he will only see me for suboxone so I am awaiting an appt with primary. That's why I am here looking at what others have been going through. I feel a little like I am still going through withdrawal sometimes. I don't WANT any opiates but do find myself wondering if I'd feel normal on them. F 56 4 days
