FEMARA  (LETROZOLE):  This medication is used to treat certain types of breast cancer (such as hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer) in women after menopause. Letrozole is also used to help prevent the cancer from returning. Some breast cancers are made to grow faster by a natural hormone called estrogen. Letrozole decreases the amount of estrogen the body makes and helps to slow or reverse the growth of these breast cancers.   FDA Approval Date: 1997-07-25 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Breast cancer Initially hot flashes joint pain, muscle pain , depression, and made me feel like I was 90 and life was over I would highly recommend steering clear of this drug. It was made clear to me from the Onco after many complaints that this drug gives you a whole 2-7% advantage against cancer returning. Definitely not worth the awful downsides! I've quit it after a year and feel slightly better after being off it for 6 months now, but still have joint pain muscle pain, difficulty getting going after sitting awhile. Terrible! F 64 1 years

1  Breast cancer and my doctor put me Can’t stand for hardly any length of time . My feet hurt so bad I was in a wheel chair for 10 days. My sisters had to come in to feed me and my animals. I cryed so much I was sick. My knee and back went out worn knee brace and back brace. Still have back brace on. I can’t stand straight without it. Does anyone know how long these side effects last . mine seem to be getting worse than better. Been off the drug at least 4 months now. This Drug is dangerous. I’m in kidney failure not due to this drug . But cymbalta. I was on it 8 months went into kidney failure that soon stage 5 . Luckily I went off it and regained some of it back. I’m now a stage 3. Good luck to those having to take these drugs. Someone said thier doctor put them on it for pain it worked for my fibromyalgia. But got my kidneys.?????We are famed if we do and famed if we don’t.  1  Breast cancer double mastectomy I took this medicine for 5 years. I have been off now for 10 years and I am now completely disabled. I had to retire at age of 41 after 5 years on this medicine. I can barely walk, bones and joints hurt, had a scan done that shows I have severe arthritis in every joint of my body. My point being is, the pain will not get better it only gets worse. I went to see a lawyer years ago to file a lawsuit against this company but my statue of limitations had passed. This drug is definitely called the devil drug! F 52 5 years

4  Breast cancer estrogen positive Very few at first, started getting worse recently. Some joint pain and stiffness but now neck and hip pain, some days can hardly get out of bed but OK after moving around, hot shower, hot water bottles on lower back. Annoying insomnia, lack of motivation and depression. But it has been mostly pretty tolerable and it's a trade-off because I refused chemo. I have no doubts I would go to mets without it as tumour was very large, 10 affected lymph nodes, the cells will have already travelled into the body and Femara is all that is stopping them from growing. I was feeling very positive until recently but now not so sure I will be able to keep going if pain gets worse. But not a lot of options apparently. F 74 1 years

1  Breast Cancer Made me feel so bad I thought I was dying. Went to ER, onco took me off...Neuropathy set in on my legs, feet & hands. I have been off of it for 4months and still having problems with legs, feet & hands hurting, tingling & swelling. I would not recommend it. I feel by taking this drug only for 11 days I will never be the same again. Fatigue, pain in my feet, legs & hands are extremely bad if I stand for any length of time. It takes me days to recoup.  1  To prevent breast cancer returning Started with Arimadex 14 months ago and was switched to Femara 6 weeks ago. Had severe side pain on the arimadex. My side pain is gone however I am having pain in my neck, knee and calve. I cannot go to the gym anymore and my quality of life has been compromised. I’ve had it. There are so many side effects that if cancer doesn’t kill me, a side effect will. Having my first grandchild this Dec and plan on being an active grandparent. This won’t be possible if I continue deteriorating. I choose quality of life. Am going to try a homeopath to see if there is another way to reduce my estrogen. F 64 12 days

5  Breast cancer, post therapy So far, I have tolerated this drug with ease. Before I consented to taking it, I read many of these reviews and frankly, they frightened me. I know that drug reactions are very individual, and things could change for me as well. I do not know whether it is effective or not, but have to rely on the science for a while. But I am glad I tried. We chose this drug for me over Tomaxifin, since I am at risk of DVT. F 71 6 months

1  Stage 2 breast cancer er positive Hot flashes, night sweats, aching body, trigger thumb, hand joints arm and shoulder joints, hip joints, mood swings, depression, foot and ankle pain, ear pain, insomnia, rapid weight gain, rapidly elevated cholesterol I had no side effects except hot flashes until I hit the 2 month mark and all hell broke loose! The pain was so bad in my right thumb joint and right foot that I got cortisone shots that only worked for a few days. This week the hip, shoulder, and foot pain set in and I can barely walk. My mood swings are really scary as well. I go frome being fine one day to crying and depressed the next. It takes me hours and hours to fall asleep, and then I over sleep or feel tired all day. My weight has jumped 10,lbs in 2 months as well as my cholesterol jumping 100 points in the same time frame!!!! This is an AWFUL drug and I would NEVER recommend it. I am telling onc. This week that I cannot live like this and I will not be taking it any longer! F 55 3 months

1  Breast cancer I started out on Arimedex in October of 2015 and was having bone and joint pain and especially pain in my hands and couldn't grasp anything. Oncologist switched me to Letrozole and I was in so much pain I couldn't take it, so I stopped. Bone pain so bad, had surgery on hand because of trigger thumb and I can barely grasp anything still, feet hurt so bad I can barely walk, have numbness and tingling in my hands, arms and feet, especially right arm that I can't sleep at night, among other side effects. I stopped taking it August 8th and I'm still having all these side effects. I was wondering if someone could tell me how long it took for side effects to go away after getting off of this. Also, oncologist wanted me to try Tamoxifen. I don't think I want to. I'm so tired of feeling like I'm 90 yrs old! I know everyone's body tolerates things differently but I would not recommend this to anyone! F 51 3 months

3  Breast cancer post therapy I was diagnosed stage I breast cancer slightly estrogen and progesterone positive and HER 2 positive. Had 4 chemo treatments and 6 weeks of daily radiation. Then a year of Hercepton. Was started on Letrozole 4 years 9 months ago. Only side effects I started with was weight gain. Then about 3 years into therapy my knees became a problem and I had bilateral knee replacement in early 2016. Then the low back pain started. It is so bad I have had 3 epidural injections none of which gave me any relief. I have been to orthopedic doctors, spine specialists, neurologist, and pain management. None have helped. I also had a trigger thumb earlier this year but that was injected and now has improved. I just started to notice recently my hair has begun to fall out in amounts that are not normal. I can't even walk into a store from my car without having to give my back a rest. It burns with pain. None of these doctors ever mentioned the letrozole could be causing my problems. Are they oblivious. I started researching and came across a lot of blogs talking about my same symptoms. I had 3 months left to finish my 5 year stink with this drug but I could not take it anymore. I decided to stop the meds and see if I improve. Lord I hope so. I have not told my oncologist yet. She will talk me into staying on it. She told me in March I need to get a hysterectomy so they can put me on Tamoxifin for 5 more years. New treatment is 10 yrs. let me know how long before I notice any change F 60 5 years

2  Breast cancer After 5 years of tamoxifen (which I tolerated very well) oncologist recommended femara since it has 'less severe side effects'. After two months on femara the joint pain started- feet, hips, knees, wrists, trigger thumb. Oh and I lost my eyebrows and eyelashes and thinning hair! This medicine was not kind to me. I kept saying s/e we're going to get better; and after a year of hell I switched back to Tamoxifen. Each person is different with medicine; and femara did not go well with my body. I hope and pray the side effects will get better in time. Good luck and good health to all F 53 1 years
