ZYBAN  (BUPROPION HYDROCHLORIDE):  This medication is used in combination with a stop-smoking program (e.g., support group, counseling) to help you quit smoking. Bupropion can decrease your nicotine withdrawal symptoms (e.g., irritability, anxiety, restlessness) and your urge to smoke. Quitting smoking decreases your risk of heart and lung disease, as well as cancer. This medication belongs to a class of medications known as antidepressants. It is not known exactly how bupropion works to reduce smoking urges. It may work by restoring the balance of certain natural chemicals (neurotransmitters) in the brain. Discuss the risks and benefits of this medication, as well as other ways to quit smoking (such as nicotine replacement treatment), with your doctor.   FDA Approval Date: 1997-05-14 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  Stop smoking Severe Anxiety and depression, crying fits, hard to sleep, decreased appetite, restlessness and pacing, lack of focus and motivation, suicidal thoughts. Felt like I was going insane. Scared myself enough to wean off and stop the pills. I wanted to quit smoking and I did. Easily, and I couldn't be happier. I was aware of the side effects going in and had support when I was experiencing my artificial reality. When it got more than I could handle I went back to 1 pill a day for a couple of days then I stopped. Feeling confident with not smoking because it felt easy and I also am not going thru the emotional roller coaster ever again. I would recommend for smoking only if you are fully aware of the side effects AND have a support system to talk you thru them, realizing you are experiencing an "artificial reality". F 50 54 days

2  Smoking Cessation After three days of one pill per day, I upped the dosage to two. On the evening of the fifth day I noticed restlessness and sleeplessness--as though I had overdosed on coffee. Last night (day six) was very unpleasant. I got about two hours sleep and couldn't stop thinking about a personal conflict I uncharacteristically embraced the day before. Today I took only one pill, but I still feel dry-mouthed, agitated, impatient, short-tempered, and--my wife assures me--I am behaving here and there like a real bastard. I haven't altered my smoking habits yet, but I have noticed that the cigarettes aren't as satisfying as they were before. I'll give this a few more days at one pill a day. If I still feel as crappy as I have the past several days, I'll dump Zyban. I think my MD should try this stuff before prescribing it to another patient; my pharmacist should try it, as well. I was told about the possibility of insomnia and the rare seizure--not that I would feel like I spent three days in a crack house. M 50 7 days

1  smoking cessation sleep disturbances, waking every hour. Incredible hives, severe itchiness. Stopped taking after 1 week. Did not help at all - in fact I smoked more. F 50 5 days

1  Major Depression Shocking - extremely labile emotionally, paranoid, ended up suicidal My brief intro to this drug was a disaster. It's Australia's only way of getting "Wellbutrin" which is commonly used as an AD in the USA. It was hugely expensive as not covered by Govt for depression - and I lasted 5 days before realised I would not survive the experience. Jealous of those it works for, though, as there are no sexual side effects - in fact, improves things in that department. Would never touch again. F 50 5 days

1  to quit smoking lightheadedness, dry mouth, stupidity, lack of being able to function mentally for at least 2 weeks, got better but still low ability in thinking and concentrating but a slight antidepressant effect This has done nothing for my cravings. At least as far as I think. In fact for several weeks I smoked more than usual until I was just about choking from over smoking. Then I got mad at Zyban and mad at my cigarettes and shouted at them as if they were living entities. I'm 45 hrs nicotine free so far but don't think has anything to do with the Zyban and have been having strong cravings and been going through uncomfortable withdrawals. Last night was hell, not much sleep, chills and sweating and pain. But I'm hanging in there. F 50 4 weeks

1  To stop smoking Extreme debilitating panic attacks I am sure this drug is good for some people but it ruined my life for 3 years or so, from a position of having no mental health issues at all. Looking back I think I was experiencing work anxiety and occasional panic attacks - as such, I should never had really started taking them but I thought it was super important to stop smoking. Upon taking my tablet on day 6 I felt extremely ill and thought I was going to have a heart attack. It turned out to be a panic attack and these continued for 3 years, sometimes up to 30 or so times a day. Very slowly due to counselling and a short period of medication my panics grew less and less. I do not think Zyban was in itself the cause of my panic attacks but I believe it triggered them. I have never smoked since but it was a heavy price to pay - I simply can't recommend it for anyone as it truly ruined my life for 3 years. I was about 32 at time of treatment. M 50 7 days

5  Depression lost 5 pounds so far. Not interested in food or wine (unusual for me LOL) day 4 a little light headed - felt high. Kinda nice. Not sleepy all the time like I was on citopam. Lots of energy. Feel Happy. I have tried Prozax, zoloft, effexor, celexa, couldn't stand the side effects. Zyban is a different animal...really working for me...AND I've lost a little weight! a nice bonus to having life and personality back. Works for me. F 49 2 weeks

5  To quit smoking The only side effect I've experienced is a bit of trouble sleeping and vivid dreams. Eliminates cravings. In eight days, I've gone from smoking a pack a day to 10 cigarettes a day. Zyban has given me the confidence to KNOW I will be able to quit. Wish I'd started on Zyban years ago. F 49 8 days

4  nicotine addiction Had only mild side effects (dry mouth, constipation, slow thinking) in the beginning. Suddenly in week 6 started to feel giddy and nausea a feeling that climaxed together with acute anxiety, fear, crying etc. It was really scary and I had to be taken to hospital. Stopped taking drug immediately and am fine now. Zyban really did work for me as I had almost no cravings at all after more than 30 years of smoking. Never felt it so easy to stop. However, it is not known how this drug works and what it does to you. I would say try other non-drug methods first (such as the Allen Carr book recommended by other contributors)and only take Zyban if absolutely nothing else works. Watch out for delayed side effects such as I experienced after 5 weeks. Make sure that you have someone nearby to help you at all times should you have problems. F 49 6 weeks

4  quit smoking days one two and three no side effects by the tenth day feeling spaced out, irritable, tense,i am going to wean myself off now as it is beginning to freak me out. quit smoking on the fourth day as they tasted so disgusting i think you still need willpower and determination as i gave up for seven years and have been smoking again for eight years, just went cold turkey the first time, this time the cravings are not so bad but all the other things like not sleeping, irritable, tense are the same only on zyban your spaced out at the same time.  4  Quit smoking Dry mouth, wierd dreams/sleep patterns Apart from the dry mouth and few odd dreams, i found Zyban very successful. I suppose it affects different people in different ways. It was about 11 or 12ys before i actually stopped. The taste of cigs became foul and the thought of smoking one made me feel sick. 12 weeks now and though the thought of smoking doesn't make me feel sick. I just don't fancy one anymore. M 49 1 months

3  stop smoking I am on day 9 of my course now and stopped smoking on Monday. I cant say I havent had any cravings but they have been managable. I have read a lot of the feedback and do think that possibly Zyban is taking the blame for normal nicotine withdrawel symptons - but we shall see. Zyban is supposed to minimise weight gain when stopping. Does anyone know if it all piles on when you stop the tablets? F 49 10 days

3  To stop smoking Dizzy surreal shaky blurred existence. Couldn't drive anymore, couldn't sleep. Felt mentally vacant, docile, slurred speech. Had to have ambulance for suspected stroke ECG and MRI scan and hours in hospital. Not a stroke just physically shaken drained and a complete mess. Felt on the verge of seizure constantly. Was a struggle to hold on to consciousness and reality. Works for stopping smoking but the side effects are immensely dangerous to the very life you're trying to save from smoke. Just seems a guarantee of a quicker death. Was advised by every doctor I saw in the past 5 days (because of the side effects) to stop taking. Started smoking again immediately. F 49 14 days

5  Depression/Anxiety UPDATE - 15 November, 2005 Lexapro - ceased using 5 November,2005, Wellbutrin (Zyban)- 150mg twice daily (7am and 3pm). Imovance 3.25 to 7.5 mg as required for sleep. Side Effects: During first couple of weeks, a bit racy, anxious but this passed. Slight nausea, but this too has diminished as the weeks have passed. I am now in week 5 of using Wellbutrin (one week as a mono med) and I am finding it very effective in lifting mood and energy levels; plus,I have had an increase in concentration and libido with more intense orgasms. As a number of other posters cautioned, it did take a full 4 weeks for the Wellbutrin to begin to achieve a good level of treatment effectiveness (and I certainly did want to throw the towel in a few times). My sincere thanks to everyone who shared their own experiences and emphasised the need to BE PATIENT and allow the drug time to level out the brain chemistry. As my anxiety seems to have improved with the Wellbutrin alone, I am now comfortable that, should I experience a serious anxiety increase, I can, per others experience and my discussions with my doctor, use Xanax to manage such a moment. My tip: If you are starting out on a new anti-depressant, copy and paste snippets of some of the postive med experiences you read about here and elsewhere. Print these M 48 5 weeks

5  To quit smoking The only side effect that I experienced was dry mouth. It has helped me a great deal. I've smoked over a pack a day for the last 30 years. I am down to 2 cigarettes a day. Having trouble taking that final step to quit completely, but I will do it. F 48 2 months

5  Stop Smoking Headache, kind of like a dizzy-spacey feeling in the head, trouble staying asleep, anxiety I gave Zyban a rating of 5 because it helped me to stop smoking, but I would not recommend Zyban. The side effects are just too many and too strong. I took 1 tablet a day for 3 days and then started 2x a day, that was the day I quit. I had 3 cigarettes and the last one tasted so foul, so metallic, I just put it out and haven't smoked since. I can't say I don't have an occasional urge, but the urge is small and I can basically just say no to the urge, and it simply goes away. I guess it gives different people different side effects, but it did work for me. M 48 7 days

5  Smoking Cessation A slight "disconnected" feeling-comparable to some cold medications. Nothing major and you get used to that in a few weeks Fantastic medication. I'm sure some people will experience something negative but I wish more people would familiarize themselves with the normal effects of not smoking so they wouldn't get nicotine withdrawal confused with the medication. My experience? As a result of the medication I didn't get ill tempered or hateful. I felt like my whole body woke up though. I understand the disturbed sleep, huge increase in libdo, elated moods and overall sense of well being can be attributed to my body coming off of nicotine. Wonderful experience and I'm sorry everyone can't experience what I'm going thru! F 48 2 years

5  Stop Smoking This is the 3rd time I've taken Zyban. For reasons that are beyond me I stopped smoking for 3 months and started again. This time there won't be a thing on this earth that will make me start smoking again...as I can't take Zyban any more. The foul breath, bad taste in my mouth, massive mood swings and during this last prescription such massive depression that I've had suicidal thoughts. This is not me at all. I've stopped taking Zyban. Luckily I've also stopped smoking. This drug is not for everyone...but it was the ONLY way I've managed to stop smoking. M 48 35 days
