LUPRON DEPOT-3  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to stop early puberty (precocious puberty) in children. It helps to delay sexual development (such as growth of the breasts/testicles) and the start of menstrual periods. It also helps slow down early bone growth to increase the likelihood of reaching normal adult height. Leuprolide works by decreasing the amount of sex hormones that a child's body makes (estrogen in girls, testosterone in boys).   FDA Approval Date: 1997-03-07 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  prostate cancer physical & mental exhaustion, loss of stamina, loss of concentration, hot sweats, raised liver functions & mild nausea, high blood pressure, high glucose level, raised cholestrol; increased appetite early on and periodically, bone thinning (first posted below on 4/2/08) - now finished Tx: this drug is like being on mild chemo, especially after the first 12 mos. BUT it seems to have worked for me. each man experiences it differently, but i do think it is harder the younger the patient, based on my support group experience.exercise is a great mitigator - i missed very few days - and resistance ex. is v. important - google RoAnne Segal's JCO article, 12/8/08 ascopubs.org/cgi/content/abstract/JCO.2007.15.4963v1. feel free to e-mail me for info and support.  4  Prostate cancer I was prescribed this, which they call Prostap in the UK, as a preliminary treatment before having radiotherapy. After a few days I started to experience obsessions with certain things, and this developed into a mania over about 3 weeks. Then I had what felt like an emotional crisis, with insomnia, anxiety, extreme swings of mood (elation, weeping) and over-reaction to any emotional event. I felt I was deeply in love with one of my best friends! (Never told her) Also physical symptoms like palpitations and sweaty episodes, but these were insignificant in comparison to the mind-bending effects. After 3 months the effects are wearing off, thank god, And I am much calmer. Now I just have the effects of the radiation to suffer. It had the desired effect on my prostate cancer, but I hope I never have to have this drug on a long-term basis. M 65 3 months

4  Prostate Cancer Hot flashes, zero libido, atrophy, weight gain. I was diagnosed with PC in 1999. Went thru: External conformal radiation 4 years later psa=7.0 Cryosurgery= no help Lupron 12/2004= the usual side effects. psa=0.26 Stopped Lupron 12/2007 I saw an article about a UCLA Med Center trial where 4,000 advanced PC men were divided into two groups 2,000 continued on Lupron 2,000 stopped Lupron and toke one 8 oz. of Pomegranate Jucie/day 4 years (as i recall) the results were that their psa was the same in each group with some in the pom juice group lower. My urologist agreed to my plan to stop Lupron and start pom juice. I started pom juice Sept 2007. PSA was 0.0.26 Checked PSA March 2008 it is now 0.10. I use the Pomegranate Juice concentrate (Sam's Club $16.00 += for 32 oz)(one oz = 8 oz of juice) so this about $0.50/day. Costco carries it also. Also available online. All the Lupron effects are slowly going away. To see the UCLA trial report search Google for "UCLA prostate Cancer pomegranate j M 79 3 years

4  Prostate Cancer I have been on Lupron Depot 3 for 4 months, I had prostectomy July 2007, The only side effects I have had from Lupron are hot flashes and lower back ache. both of which are tollerable, I was very wary at having Lupron injection , I read alot of the comments on this site plus many other sites, But I must admit I really have not had any major side effects from this drug, I feel it is everyones choice as to whether you have this drug injected, Everyone reacts differently to all chemicals , I feel the positives out weigh the negatives with this drug, I suggest people should use their own discretion in decisions, Not to just take what others have to say, We are all indaviduals and God gave us the ability to think for ourselves, Use that ability in every way possible to fight what ever cancer or disease you may have. I attend a support group each month, I have found it a great way to learn, It also allows you to be able to speak about your experiances regarding Lupron , Radiation ECT. I can only speak of my experiance with this drug, Maybe it works better for males than females, But I feel one never knows unless you try it, But please dont believe all the negatives you re M 59 120 days

4  Prostate cancer I am taking Lupron for two years for post op Prostate Cancer and removal of prostate. I had 33 radiation treatments followed by injection of Lupron ( 3rd one ) 3 more to go. I am getting severe pain in one knee with swelling and mild and occasional pain in the other knee. Some days are better than others and Advil seems to minimze pain and I walk normal. Did some kneeling during some construction and days later ... interior meniscus of knee had acute pain. Chiropractor seemed to alleviate some symptoms but next it has moved to outside of knee in meniscus and ligaments an causing to limp and be in pain when I walk. Is this caused by LUPRON ??  3  endometriosis Hot flashes, cold flashes, memory loss, sex drive better, "tired" due to hot flashes at night, emotionaly up and down, but i do feel more level headed then before...kinda weird! After 2 pelviscopy surgeries for my endometriosis, and finding out that i have another disease called endomytosis, the doctor recommended this procedure for 6 months... i wish i did a little more research on it BEFORE i decided to go through hell for 6 months. I would have to say the only major problems were my hot flashes and memory loss. I noticed that after my 2nd shot i lost alot of weight almost too much if there is such a thing. But by the 4th shot and no really change in my work out pattern i notice the weight came back on but only in my mid section, i know this might not make sense but my pain started to come back again as well. I did notice the depression was a on going battle, up and down...etc. Listen people ask me all the time would i recommend it...and the answer would be ....i don't know, it is such a complicating shot, some people have the results THEY hoped for and others don't. All i know is that physically i feel as if i am poisoning my body, i look at photos of me a M 6 months

2  prostate cancer (T3a, 4+4) hot sweats, raised liver functions, high blood pressure, increased appetite, loss of stamina, bone thinning (first entered under 'lupron' but actually receiving L depot-3) typical hot sweats that seem to be decreasing with time - good since i have a 28-month program. ALT, AST and cholestrol were very high initially and have returned to top of normal; sugar higher and B.P. a problem too; also i'm always hungry. i've always had an aggressive daily exercise routine so i've confined weight gain to around 5# and believe exercise is key to L. management. it is certainly a little tougher to scull or cycle, but my yellow wristband is an inspiration. exercise also helps fight bone thinning - i learnt i had borderline osteoporosis readings in my spine from the baseline bone density scan. is anyone on a prescribed course other than 4-6 months and 28 months initially? i am concerned about becoming hormone refractory. i've been on effexor for 7 years for depression (strong genetic history) so can't tell whether it's helping with the sweats/mindset. PSA has declined from 13.1 to 0.1, so clearly the L is d M 57 5 months

1  prostae cancer Hot flashes, extreme sensitivity to sun. Mania (without depression) Loss of libido. Difficulty with erections. Orgasm without ejaculation. Took 2 one-months shots. No problem. Then one three-month shot: after two months 24-hour hot flashes and recurrent bouts of mania. I don't mind about the loss of libido. I expected that. Shot was supposed to have worn off one month ago, but the effects are worse than ever, while my psa slowly climbs. I'll never have any kind of treatment for prostate cancer again. I'm not afraid to die if I have to live like this. M 64 5 months

1  PROSTATE CANCER In 2007 I had a radical prostatectomy. In 2009 my PSA went up. Dr recommended Lupron depot. Did not inform me of possible side effects. Now I have no muscle strength, very poor endurance, hot flashes, very poor sleep, memory loss, very poor concentration, irritability, bouts of extreme depression, vision changes, and PAIN in legs. When I went back to Dr he said my PSA was lower and would not need another injection. Stated I would never take another injection. This medicine has destroyed my life. I have been a paraplegic for 23 years. My life has gone from being independent to depending on others. I cannot make transfer into my car so now will have to buy van with lift. The pain in my legs seems to be bone pain mainly is in my left femur which has had no feeling for 20+ years. Due to the muscle weakness I have fallen and fractured two bones in calf. Dislocated a finger and suffered a torn rotator cuff and head trauma. THIS MEDICINE SHOULD NEVER BE GIVEN TO A PARAPLEGIC WITHOUT AN EXPLANATION OF POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS! I was given the shot Sept 1, 2009 and went to my 40th class reunion on Nov 21, 2009 and barely remember any of it. M 59 1 times

5  Stage 4 Endometriosis I didn't have any major side effects, 2 mild hot flashes (one at ovulation and one the day before my period). I think since I had such severe endo and such severe symptoms the relief is that much more noticeable. I have been on the shot for 1 month. It has been awesome. I have been less bloated, had less stomach pain, and now have my period which doesn't hurt at all (where I would normally have to take 8-12 Advil each day for the first 2-3 days) and I have not bleeding nearly as much (normally 12 tampons first 1-2 days now just 2/day.)  5  Fibroids Mood swings , migraines , hot flashes were severe the first 2 months but have tappered of since.my 3 softball size fibroids that put strain on my heart and lungs forming a pluresy mass . Drs gave me 7 yrs to live & a full hysterectomy was my only option. After 5 mths of 3.75 treatments my fibroids are gone except for one that has shrunk from 10 in to 6cm. I've never be happier with my results and the Luperon Depot is worth enduring any side affect .Hopefully I will still have a chance at getting pregnant...best of luck to you all F 42 7 months

5  Endometriosis Bleeding, temperature changes I have had only great results from the 3 month Lupron shot I received. I did get a lengthy 2 week period of bleeding, and then the extra pain about 3 weeks after the shot was administered, but since then feel better than ever. My mood has actually improved. I used to be hot all the time, and now am more on the cold side and feel regulated. I am taking add-back therapy so that may be a helper. I am due for my second 3 monh shot at the end of the month, and am hoping that the results stay the same! F 3

5  Stage 3 Endo/12.6 cm mass, rt ovary Hot flashes, night sweats, constant fatigue, loss of period, vaginal dryness, decreased libido, memory and concentration issues, heart palpitations, depression, mood swings, muscle and joint pain, bloating, weight gain > 60 lbs (1st round), mild acne, nightmares I took 7 rounds of monthly Lupron in 2002 for Stage 4 ENDO after lap with adhesions all over my organs, including a mass on my diaphragm. I experienced severe side-effects, but the results were astounding I was able to get pregnant in 2007 and had a healthy, beautiful child. I had no pain or complications until getting pregnant in 2010 with my daughter. I developed a 12.6 cm endometrioma on my rt ovary and had to be monitored very closely during my pregnancy. I lost my daughter in my 3rd trimester to a cord accident and am now on my 2nd 6-month round of Lupron to attempt to avoid surgery and get pregnant again before I lose my reproductive organs for good. 2nd time, milder symptoms, but new and worsening memory and concentration issues are worrisome. I am also having muscle and joint pain and heart palpitations that I did not have last time that I attributed to age until reading this site. Lupron has been a miracle drug for me,aside from the side-effects, and I hope this 2nd round passes quickly and does its job. This drug is not for the faint of heart, but in my case, it has been my saving grace. F 29 6 months

5  Continuous bleeding and pain Hot flashes, painful injection site I started the lupron injections four months ago after suffering continuous heavy bleeding and pain for about 18 months. I was scared to try this therapy, but my doctor made me feel more comfortable about it after talking with her. I have had hot flashes and night sweats, but the bleeding has stopped and the pain is more manageable. My doctor said it's this therapy or a hysterectomy. (This was my 4th opinion). Since I have been unsuccessful in staying pregnant and do not have any children, she recommended this therapy to give me a chance at having a child before a hysterectomy. So far, I do feel much better. Sure, there are are days where I feel horrible, but it's so much better than it feeling bad everyday. My doctor gave me a low dose of Lexapro to help with the hot flashes and night sweats and it has made a huge difference. I would recommend this to someone who may be in my situation. F 26 4 months

5  Endometriosis Positive Side Effects - no more migraines! Weight Loss - 40 pounds! Increased sex drive! Negative Side Effects - hot flashes, waking at night, but definitely worth it due to feeling SO much better! I took it for 7 months (no period for a year), then a year later took it again for 9 months (no period for a year again). I felt fantastic! No periods, no pain, could go to the gym and exercise, lost weight, wanted to have sex, migraines went away (did have regular headaches). I felt better those months than I had in a long, long time. However, when I stopped and my estrogen levels came back up, I had severe nausea for months - as if I were pregnant. F 43 16 months
