LIPITOR  (ATORVASTATIN CALCIUM):  Atorvastatin is used along with a proper diet to help lower "bad" cholesterol and fats (such as LDL, triglycerides) and raise "good" cholesterol (HDL) in the blood. It belongs to a group of drugs known as "statins." It works by reducing the amount of cholesterol made by the liver. Lowering "bad" cholesterol and triglycerides and raising "good" cholesterol decreases the risk of heart disease and helps prevent strokes and heart attacks. In addition to eating a proper diet (such as a low-cholesterol/low-fat diet), other lifestyle changes that may help this medication work better include exercising, losing weight if overweight, and stopping smoking. Consult your doctor for more details.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-04-07 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  High Cholesterol Sweating, hot flashes which had decreased are a problem again, general fatigue, insomnia, scattered memory problems. I did not fully follow the brochure which says not to drink alcohol with Lipitor. Three weeks after starting it I had a few drinks at my sons wedding, bad call as my usual tolerance disappeared. It seems my "saturation point" was extremely low, not only ended up extremely intoxicated but vomiting and unsteady with no memory of events. Would be interested to hear if anyone else has ever had this problem. F 54 2 months

1  Hi Chol- No other risk factors Severe Abdominal pain, headache, indigestion, belching and discomfort, backache, chest pain, occasional diarrhea and vomiting, difficulty swallowing. My husband and I were both put on low dose of lipitor by our GP (our chol was very high but we have no other risk factors) By day 10 we both came down with stomach pain (upper abdominal), headaches, and overall ill feeling. We thought it may be food poisoning. My husbands pain was so severe we canceled a pre paid vacation to New Orleans and went in to see the doctor- he dismissed his symptoms (no fever, etc.) and ordered an ultra sound. We left the office and almost drove immediately to the ER, as my husband was in so much despair. We decided to give it one more day, so he is taking heavy doses of pain meds. I ran across this website and now know our symptoms are from the lipitor!! We are stopping today, still can't decide if I need to take him to the ER or not? He is miserable!! I hope the side effects are quick to subside. Thanks to everyone who has shed light on this! F 49 14 days

1  high cholesteral Heart palpitations...weird heart flutters at night after taking pill.worst side effect taking 10 mg for 11 months caused diastolic dysfunction stage 1. I had an echo test done on 2012 prior to lipitor normal heart function....after 11 months on it at 10 mg I had another echo test done showed dis to lie dysfunction stage 1. I questioned the doctor who said age has to do with it... I was 53 at the time! I quit cold turkey and read dr sinatra book and Dr Peter Langshoen about CO Q10 and reversing this dysfunction.I started on Coq 10 and magnesium and d riboos and l argentine suppelments.. it worked just had another echo test done and it showed no diastolic dysfunction at all!  1  heart attack My cardiologist put me on Lipitor after my heart attack, 40mg a day.I developed shoulder and chest pains on my left side, horrible acid reflux, and gas pains. They did a stress test on me and found that my heart was not the problem.I stopped taking the Lipitor for a few days and the pain and stomach problems eased up. I tried Crestor too the pain was worse. Because of my heart attack they want me on the stronger statin. I now take it twice a week without my doctors permission. I figure some of it is better than none of it. They even tried lowering the dose to 20mg a day. That did not help either. I wish I could take it like I am supposed to because it makes deadly plaque adhere to the artery wall. F 45 2 months

1  high cholesterol Right now I have severe anemia, feel very confused, pains in feet, legs and back, nausea, cold and pale skin, bad acid reflux, headaches, and by 6 pm every day I can't keep my eyes open. I have also caught 3 colds in the past four months, which is not a usual occurrence for me. I stopped the drug 3 days ago against my doctor's advice. I don't know how long it will take me to feel better, but I do know this. When I was on Crestor for 2 months last year, I ended up with an emergency colonoscopy and my specialist told me to get off that too. Honestly, once I was off the Crestor for a few weeks I felt a heck of a lot better. I know now that statins act like poison in my body. I think Lipitor, Crestor and other statin drugs do more harm than good. When I am not on them I feel like a healthy and productive human being. I don't care what the doctor says. She's crazy to put me on this stuff. F 58 4 months

4  Hyperlipidemia Everything listed on leaflet and then some more. Just wanted to mention that the fuzzy brain stopped when I stopped taking Fluoxetine (Prozac) together with this statin. And found quite by accident that Thiazide morning and night neutralized some of the side effects, and greatly eased the muscle pain and excrutiating lower leg pain, numbness and burning. Thiazide was added to lower blood pressure and turned out to be salvation. Have to use statin because of light stroke and family history of high cholesterol and heart attacks at early age. Incredibly sensitive to medication side effects, cannot tolerate higher dose, but totally worth it if it means I won't become an invalid and burden to my children. F 48 11 years

1  family history of heart disease I was healthy and walked 4 miles a day. My brother had sudden triple heart surgery, so my Doctor said with close relative and my very slight elevated cholesterol she believed I should start Lipitor. The first week I developed constipation, and then hemorrhoids. Then started having lower back pains. Dizzy spells, couldn't catch my breath. Then one day on my walk my chest started hurting very bad, I would stop and take deep breaths. I finally made it home, but continued with chest pains. Went to E.R., they found no heart attack but recommended I see a cardiologist. In the mean time I tried walking and could not due to chest pains, and cannot sit due to lower back pains, my quality of life deteriorated in a few short weeks. 4 days ago I realized my troubles started when I started Lipitor. Stopped it cold turkey. Was able to take a 30 minute walk today, feeling much better. I was being poisoned to death. I just hope I stopped soon enough. F 54 7 weeks

1  Elevated "bad" cholesterol Extreme fatigue, loss of energy, upper back pain, morning lethargy, weakness in legs, feeling that legs cannot support my weight, vertigo, double vision, occasional vision blurring, especially when working on the computer. I stopped taking the medication. Will discuss with my physician but I won't take statins again. I am not giving up physical exercise in order to continue on such controversial medication.  1  elevated cholesterol extreme pain in hps, legs, back, and severe muscle cramps, bursitis. several months of physical therapy for deep muscle massage which was very painful, learning how to walk without a limp, and strengthening. not able to do simple household chores (dishes, laundry, etc). now have to wear a TENS unit for pain and have had steroid injections in hips for arthritis. i've been off lipitor for 6 months and have made very slow progress. still recovering from muscle pain and weekness, taking joint supplments and fish oil to help alleviate joint pain and bursitis. still have difficulty walking and doing household chores. hoping next 6 months will see more improvement.
