LIPITOR  (ATORVASTATIN CALCIUM):  Atorvastatin is used along with a proper diet to help lower "bad" cholesterol and fats (such as LDL, triglycerides) and raise "good" cholesterol (HDL) in the blood. It belongs to a group of drugs known as "statins." It works by reducing the amount of cholesterol made by the liver. Lowering "bad" cholesterol and triglycerides and raising "good" cholesterol decreases the risk of heart disease and helps prevent strokes and heart attacks. In addition to eating a proper diet (such as a low-cholesterol/low-fat diet), other lifestyle changes that may help this medication work better include exercising, losing weight if overweight, and stopping smoking. Consult your doctor for more details.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-04-07 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

2  high cholesterol I started on 20mg per day then reduced to 10mg then decided to try 10mg every other day. The statins worked in that they lowered my cholesterol.During the three years I came off them for a few months until my cholesterol went back up. Then started again. I have now come off them completely (since about March/April) after developing severe leg pains particularly at night. In bed my legs/knees ache and I have to get up and walk about. During the day my thigh and calf muscles are tight and painful and it is difficult to walk up and down stairs. I also have some weakness in my arms/hands. I had hoped the symptoms would go once I stopped taking the statins as many people have reported. Has any one else had long term effects after stopping statins? F 64 3 years

1  heart stents I was so depressed I felt like I wanted to die. I never believed I needed it as my colesterol was low. Doc did an angioplasty and put in 2 stints I still don't think I needed. Put me on this and other med. I have R/A I coildn't walk all I did was sleep. I was so depressed it changed my personality, I couldn't walk on the pads of my feet, now I got so crazy all I did was think about how much I hated the doctor. He said discontinue the med I am like a new person. Awful stuff, brain fog, lifeless I hated the world. Be very careful with this stuff its dangerous, It should have a black box warning. F 68 5 weeks

1  Borderline cholesterol / history Ear ringing, anxiety feeling with heart palpitations, lightheadedness, insomnia, and muscle and joint aches especially if my shoulders and elbows. I have been taking 10mg as a precaution for a couple years. Went and saw a cardiologist just for family history and he upped me to 40 mg and an aspirin. I had no problems with the 10 mg but as soon as I was up to 40 and the aspirin within a couple weeks I started getting heart racing palpitations, anxiety feeling, ear ringing and lightheadedness. Talk to my GP and he said to discontinued Lipitor and aspirin for a month to see if side effects go away. This is crazy and I hope no one else has to go through this. Now instead of being able to sleep in I also wake up at like 4 or 5 a.m. every morning. M 45 0 days

1  Supposedly to reduce risk of mi Tiredness, muscle weakness, severe back pain. Was taking alongside 10mg Ezetemibe. In my opinion both are poison. Stopped taking both and felt massively better after a couple of days. After much research I concluded there is no significant evidence that lowering my already low cholesterol made sense as cholesterol is not a cause of heart disease. Should be banned. M 54 11 months

1  High cholesterol/triglycerides Worst drug on the market. I am a type 2 diabetic (hereditary) and have hypothyroidism (over 20 years) It's taken me over 20 years of prescribed Lipitor, one per day, to finally have PROOF that it doesn't work, severely affects your liver, AND does cause inflammation plus joint/muscle pain. I have hereditary high cholesterol, and for the past 20 plus years have been on Lipitor daily yet my cholesterol never got better and my triglycerides were always extremely high. SO MUCH that I've had 3 liver biopsies and no diagnosis other than fatty liver/NASH. Also, as many others here, complained of severe muscle/joint pain that NO doctor ever acknowledged yet I'm sure has caused damage to my now arthritic hands/shoulder/legs. THANKS to my newest and only cardiologist, after my 2 younger brothers died of heart failure, ran a bunch of tests, all good thanks, but my high cholesterol and high triglycerides still not better. FINALLY got off the LIPITOR, and now on CRESTOR which has miraculously in 2 years lowered my cholesterol to NORMAL ranges, and my TRIGLYCERIDES less than one third of the levels I'd had for 20 years. So many specialists and years of toxic Lipitor!! I'm so mad!!! But I am grateful to finally be feeling better, and having some amazing lower numbers in cholesterol/triglycerides! There is HOPE, keep asking questions and KEEP looking for alternatives!!! SHAME on the FDA for approving so many toxic drugs. SHOUT OUT and let BIG PHARMA know we, the patients, will NOT keep supporting their greediness!!! DO NOT take this drug!! It does NOT lower cholesterol or triglycerides. This drug causes more lifelong side effects than its worth!! F 58 20 years

1  High cholesterol Aches, brain fog, made me feel awful This drug should be taken off the market. I took this drug for 10 years. At first no problems with it but I started climbing the stairs and get terrible pains in my legs. I also started forgetting things. My sister told me she had come off it because of terrible pains. It dawned on me it’s the LIPITOR. I came off it and a week later I had my energy back, able to run up and down stairs again, memory and aches gone. I will never take this drug again F 10 years

1  High triglycerides I should have quit taking this the very first day. On day one I already experienced aches in the biceps and forearms, followed by my legs, and then back. After that came a type of tiredness I had not experiences before except in the worst stages of the flu. I stopped for two days and all symptoms resolves, but my doctor convinced me to press on, claiming these symptoms would go away after getting used to the medicine. Not only am I ridiculously tired, I can't sleep well enough to get rested. I will be ceasing this medication today. M 36 1 months
