LIPITOR  (ATORVASTATIN CALCIUM):  Atorvastatin is used along with a proper diet to help lower "bad" cholesterol and fats (such as LDL, triglycerides) and raise "good" cholesterol (HDL) in the blood. It belongs to a group of drugs known as "statins." It works by reducing the amount of cholesterol made by the liver. Lowering "bad" cholesterol and triglycerides and raising "good" cholesterol decreases the risk of heart disease and helps prevent strokes and heart attacks. In addition to eating a proper diet (such as a low-cholesterol/low-fat diet), other lifestyle changes that may help this medication work better include exercising, losing weight if overweight, and stopping smoking. Consult your doctor for more details.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-04-07 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  high cholesterol muscle pain, weakness, difficulty swallowing, a.fib, complete heart block I am writing this on behalf of my mother. Mom was 89 when her pmd put her on lipitor. within 7 days she started having severe muscle pain and weakness in her arms and legs, and could barely walk. She went from an 89 yr old going oon 79, to an 89 yr old going on 99 in a matter of days. went to see pmd on the 10th day and he diagnosed her with polymyalgia rheumatica and put her on steroids, and sent her to a neurologist, rheumatoligist, and orthopedic md. within around 3 months of taking this drug she was diagnosed with atrial fib and put on coumadin. withing around 6 months she went into complete heart block and had a pacemaker placed. her quality of life deteriorated in the next two years while taking this drug. she walked with the "statin shuffle", had several falls, chf, periferal vascular disease with extreme leg swelling and 3+ edema and put on lasix. she could barely swallow (you need your muscles to swallow). my mother died 1 1/2 years ago. She fell getting out of bed (had she not been on this drug she would not have had the muscle weakness and falls) developed rhabdomyolitis, seizures, and passed away 10 days later. this drug destroyed her life. As for my own experience, after 1 day of taking this drug, severe calf pain. the next day muscle twitching. ALL STATINS ARE POISON. why don't the doctors understand this? F 91 2 years

1  High Cholesterol My mother started taking 40 mg. of Lipitor 3 months ago. During the first month she complained about her head hurting. She began getting very confused. She was always exhausted, falling asleep all the time. Complained about her legs always feeling like lead. Within the last six weeks, her physical health has deteriorated to the point of her being confined to a wheelchair, in constant pain with her shoulders, knees, and a feeling like her whole body hurts. She shakes as if she has Parkinsons. If I had not seen the news recently about the two men suing Pfizer over what Lipitor had done to their lives, I wouldn't have even thought about that being the cause. Finding this website confirmed it. I have taken her off the Lipitor, and am hoping that alot of her pain and fatigue and muscle problems will start to get better, although it scares me that alot of people are saying they haven't improved. I wish I had know about this a week after she started with the symptoms...I would NEVER recommend this drug to anyone! It has ruined whatever years my mother had left to enjoy life - she was very active for her age - now she's in a wheelchair. F 84 3 months

5  Congestive Heart Failure/Renal Fail none My doctor switched me from Pravachol to Lipitor almost a year ago because of a study that was done in CHF patients and when Lipitor was used, hospitalizations were cut almost in half. Normally I have to go into the hospital a minimum of 2 times a year. Since I started taking Lipitor, I have not been in the hospital even once! Also, he also told me that Lipitor was better for my kidneys than the statins. M 82 300 days

3  cardiologist's recommendation Have suffered from leg cramps(principally at night) since beginning 40 mg Lipitor, 5 years ago, after a mild heart attack. Cardiologist offered no suggestions. After trying numerous recommendation for this problem such as potassium, magnesium, vitamin E, etc. with no effect, my family doctor suggested that I stop taking Lipitor for 3 days, and see if it has any effect. The effect was dramatic. The cramps did not occur during the night after I did not take the 40 mg with my dinner. They also did not occur on the following two nights. I did not want to restart the Lipitor (once a day with the evening meal) for fear that the cramps would just as quickly return. Since it was possible that the reason why the night cramps ceased so quickly is that I was taking the 40 mg entirely in the evening, I decided to split the pills and take half in the morning and half in the evening. Although some mild cramping did return, it was nowhere close to what I had been experiencing, and this has c M 78 5 years

1  to lower cholesterol severe joint pains, needed help getting out of bed and off a chair, whereas had been previously active, neck pain up to the back of the head, right knee protruding out of joint, whereas left knee remained normal, wrist and arm joints sore, red dots on skin all over body, liver function tests normal, however had all of other side effects. Once I stopped Lipitor, side effects went away gradually. I had a similar reaction recently to Tricor, another cholesterol lowering medication.Had similar muscle and joint pains and decided to go off of that. F 78 4 months

1  High cholesterol I have been having UTI SYMPTOMS off & on for the last year. My GP & Urologist cannot figure out what is wrong as I have no infection, just burning in the vaginal & rectal area. This last week, my muscles are killing me (can hardly move), have a headache & I am physically exhausted. Going off statins as the side effects I have are not worth taking them. My cholesterol is not that high, but seeing my doctor on Monday August 38, 2017. I take Atrovastatin. F 78 4 months

4  reduce inflammation after TIA I am writing for my husband. Some of his hair fell out for a few months. Then we learned about co-enzyme Q10. Since he began taking it, no more hair has fallen out, and his hair is stronger than I have seen it in many years. (I cut his hair.) We had his genetics evaluated by Genelex; Medicare paid for it. Apparently most statins are metabolized in the liver by CYP3A4 and/or CYP3A5. This is the DNA test that he asked his doctor to prescribe. My husband takes generic Lipitor, called atorvastatin. His blood tests, ordered every 6 months by his cardiologist, are excellent now. He enjoys good health. He joined Life Extension Foundation: www.lef.org and follows their advice on supplements. He eats a plant-strong diet, and he takes walks daily. F 77 13 months

1  cholesterol 240 2 years with no problems, then toe neuropathy for two years now and other foot problems because of this I assume. I stopped Lipitor after taking it for 2 years and toe neuropathy started. I also had stomach problems and pain. After stopping Lipitor, I thought my heart would jump out of my chest, but now stomach and heart are both OK - Feet are terrible thanks to Lipitor. I know many others that have had problems with Lipitor - feet and legs - and had to stop. All my blood test were normal. I weigh 114 and 5'2". Hike, play golf and keep busy. It is a terrible drug and should be off the market F 77 2 days
