SEROQUEL  (QUETIAPINE FUMARATE):  This medication is used to treat certain mental/mood conditions (such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, sudden episodes of mania or depression associated with bipolar disorder). Quetiapine is known as an anti-psychotic drug (atypical type). It works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural substances (neurotransmitters) in the brain. This medication can decrease hallucinations and improve your concentration. It helps you to think more clearly and positively about yourself, feel less nervous, and take a more active part in everyday life. It may also improve your mood, sleep, appetite, and energy level. Quetiapine can help prevent severe mood swings or decrease how often mood swings occur.   FDA Approval Date: 2005-10-04 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  Bipolar One hour after taking, it puts you into a heavy drowsiness, almost into a stupor. You simply have to go to bed; I can't imagine anyone doing anything waking/active at all once the drug kicks in. Causes the profoundest sleep you've ever had; a godsend to those of us with hyperactive minds. Often it seems to make the night fly by instantly: One minute you're lying down, the next minute you're waking up 6-8 hours later, with no memory of having slept. Surprisingly, you awaken with little or no grogginess; the fog lifts within 30-40 minutes. I do find I need 2 cups of coffee, though to get me into the swing of active thinking. Seroquel's most disagreeable side-effect for me was, as the drug takes effect, it causes your nasal passages to swell up and shut tighter than a drum; on one occasion, very alarmingly, I felt I could barely breathe through my mouth, either. Nose spray (oxymetazoline) totally relieve this, however. Seroquel really feels like a p It's a life-saver for those with manic, hyperactive, "monkey-minded" minds, and those of us recovering from substance abuse; It reins in paranoia. I take it as a strong, effective sleep-agent, but I know a schizophrenic who takes 800MG per day! Good lord. M 50 10 years

5  Bi-Polar 1 more than pleasantly surprised by results achieved since the introduction of seroquel (take the generic) Seroquel replaced ambien (dreadful drug for me). As I understand it 150mg is a relatively lose dose but I find it effective in "cleaning up" a smidge of paranoia that accompanies by BP1. Sleep soundly with the 150mg of seroquel at night alongside of 300mg of Gabapetin (spelling?) current regimen 300mg Lamictal 30 mg Inderal 150mg Seroquel 300mg Gabapetin on a side note I struggled with the thought of introducing Seroquel (the 1st antipsychotic I would take) but am very happy I did :) best of luck folks, there is HOPE M 42 6 months

5  Bi-Polar / Sleep Disorder Occasional dry mouth I take this medication at bedtime for both Bi-Polar and my sleep disorder, 400mg does the trick and keeps me stable. This drug has been a blessing and allowed me to live a normal life. I highly recommend this medication to anyone who has sleep problems related to Bi-Polar as it is much safer than taking long term benzos. M 48 8 years

5  Bipolar 1 While on regular Seroquel: Drowsiness, dry mouth, thirst, rapid heart rate a few hours after taking a dose, confusing moods and thoughts when starting (no more confusing than while in a psychotic manic state), akathisia (very bad at beginning but tapered off), moods swung when morning dose would wear off to night dose, VERY hard to get up in the morning Now taking XR: Drowsiness, rapid heart rate, thirst, sexual dysfunction Started off at 100mg in the morning, 200mg at night. W/ every last ounce of sanity left while in a psychotic bipolar state I stayed on the med. My thoughts became organized within a few weeks but took a good 2-3 full months for the med to really shine (in a positive way). My moods however wouldn't stay stable in the evening so doc started XR. Mood is now stable throughout the day. Many complain about fogginess or being tired. XR makes me drowsy only when taken at bedtime, but unlike most people's opinions I've read, I LOVE this about Seroquel. When I want to sleep, I get good, solid sleep on a regular pattern. Much easier to get up in the morning. There is no generic equivalent of the XR, it is very expensive. Like any medication it is a risk versus benefit. For me this medication is worth the risks and is a blessing. M 32 9 months

5  schizoaffective disorder/bipolar First few months, very tired; but that passed, and now I feel very well with minimal side effects. I have been prescribed many different antipsychotics, and I feel that Seroquel is the best and safest so far. M 66

5  Anxiety & Insomnia Food cravings (manageable!) and initial morning grogginess. I've found Seroquel to be the best drug so far to treat my anxiety and insomnia. I've tried 10+ antidepressants and have not been able to tolerate their side effects. I've also been able to stop benzos since commencing Seroquel and very rarely have the urge to have a Valium, and I somehow manage to beat the urge! Apart from food cravings on Seroquel (manageable!) and some initial morning grogginess, there's nothing much else to report. I'm very happy with the results! M 33 2 months

5  Misdiagnosed as Bipolar Gained 120 pounds. Cognitive impairment. I was initially put on 50mg due to the stress of losing a loved one. Quickly built up a tolerance and ended up on 900mg. Lost my career, ability to form relationships, or control my finances. I weaned off the drug over about 7 years. This is an inappropriate medication for long term use. It is disabling and clearly a neurotoxin. Avoid at all costs. I'm now working, going to school, and enjoying life again. M 55 17 years

5  PTSD, lack of sleep Vivid dreams, groggy wake-up (use caffeine to overcome) no weight gain until I stopped smoking, slightly high blood sugar. Starting taking seroquel while on active duty and deployed in Iraq due to sleep problems and PTSD in 2009 at 25 mg, now retired from active duty and I take 200 mg before bedtime, If I don't take it, I will not go to sleep. Weight gain only after I stopped smoking in 2016, considering the small bad effects I rather take it than not. Recommend small dosage at first, plus be positive about life, it could be worse as I seen and experienced worse in Iraq. M 49 11 years

5  Bi-polar disorder After having taken this large dosage, I began to experience toxicity almost overnight. I had to cut the dose to 600 mg. This medication has made living possible to me. It has also made me pre-diabetic, and I have gained weight. But I am sane, which has more meaning to me than any of the side effects that I have. M 61 3 years

5  Bipolar disorder Increased appetite but not a problem when taken last thing at night. A little groggy in the morning but easily solved with a coffee and nowhere near as bad as insomnia-induced grogginess Absolute life changer, 200mg nightly allows me to sleep after decades of insomnia. 25 or 50mg taken as needed to mitigate depression, rage and/or mania on the fly works well. Clearly a lot of people have had problems with seroquel (quetiapine) but I can't recommend it highly enough. If your bipolar controls your life, as it did mine, quetiapine can give you your agency back. Speaking of which, you'll only gain weight if you allow it. M 47 10 years

4  Mood instability, anxiety Drowsiness, lack of motivation, weight gain Helped my mood to stabilise and helped anxiety. Helped with sleep as I would have highly disturbing vivid nightmares. Too afraid to come off so that's why I have been on so long. Currently on day 5 without it, all good apart from intense itching of my skin. Going to ride it out M 33 4 years

4  Bipolar Brain fog, weight gain, lethargy, joint stiffness and aching muscles, sugar cravings. I was prescribed a generic version for insomnia, it was very effective at calming my racing thoughts and inducing sleep. I tried to manage my mania with just 50mg of quetiapine, which worked to a certain extent. However my depression deepened to the point of suicidal thoughts, at which point I started taking Lithium. Over the past 3 months I have reduced my quetiapine to 25mg 1 hour before going to bed. I noticed that my muscles were aching more and I was experiencing acute stiffness in my joints. I have not taken it for 2 nights now and the muscle pain and joint stiffness has disappeared. I have managed to sleep OK and will only continue use if needed as a sleep aid. M 43 9 months

4  Psychosis, Severe Depression Dry mouth, Shaking/Twitching, Decreased Appetite, Mood Swings, Decreased Motivation, Extreme tiredness While I had decreased psychotic episodes the ones I did have were far more intense. I, at times, would become extremely dissociated from the world, I couldn't tell if anything was real anymore. The previous statement was worsened by the extremely vivid and life like dreams that I had while on the drug. M 16 1.2 years
