SEROQUEL  (QUETIAPINE FUMARATE):  This medication is used to treat certain mental/mood conditions (such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, sudden episodes of mania or depression associated with bipolar disorder). Quetiapine is known as an anti-psychotic drug (atypical type). It works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural substances (neurotransmitters) in the brain. This medication can decrease hallucinations and improve your concentration. It helps you to think more clearly and positively about yourself, feel less nervous, and take a more active part in everyday life. It may also improve your mood, sleep, appetite, and energy level. Quetiapine can help prevent severe mood swings or decrease how often mood swings occur.   FDA Approval Date: 2005-10-04 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Bipolar 2, clinical depression Gained weight rapidly, bedridden slept 13 hours, didn’t care for anything felt like I was paralysed. I thought this time I was getting the help that I deserved after taking every med under the sun non worked. It did stop me crying and numbed me emotionally but I felt very depressed and suicidle and sad that I couldn’t look after myself. If life upsets you believe me you will have a crazy episode but if your in bed all Day you feel nothing except worthless useless and not wanting to be alive but your so sedated you can’t be bothered to kill yourself. I had panic attacks and stopped breathing many times in my sleep. The tablet will hit you If you are making something to eat then suddenly your on the floor you cannot move the tablet sometimes puts your body to sleep before your mind and sometimes it feels like someone is giving you a lethal injection and you feel like your dieing whilst going to sleep it’s awful. It’s 4 days going cold turkey my nurse did not recommend it but they do nothing to help except increase the doses. My eyes and hearing and very heightened noises light is painful constant nausea my head feel awful can feel the drop in my brain feels like a painful black hole. Stomach cramps and constant pain, sweating. Crying very emotional but I’m feeling a little better despite that feel a bit more motivated to get out of bed and do simple laundry 32 6 months

1  Insomnia/Borderline personnality Weight gain of 30 lbs, sédation, extreme fatigue, stroke, arythmia, agressive and violent behavior, depersonnalisation, depression, increased appetite, drug cravings (relapse in crystal meth after 2 year sobre), stroke i have to take brillanta now, diabetes, hypertension, suicide attempt, homoicidal ideation This is by far the worst drug I have ever taken, made me a complete lunatic and my health is ruined because of that drug. Made me sleep like a rock but could not hear my alarm, lost my job, my girlfriend. I was on Latuda before, but my doctor changed for Seroquel, why???? I was ok on Latuda. I hate Seroquel!! In Quebec Canada, they prescibe the same sh*t to everybody, Celexa that made me impotent and lethargic, and seroquel that destroyed my life!! Finally ended up at the ER after a suicide attempt. Now I'm on Buspirone and Pristiq and doing so much better. M 35 2 months

4  Bipolar Brain fog, weight gain, lethargy, joint stiffness and aching muscles, sugar cravings. I was prescribed a generic version for insomnia, it was very effective at calming my racing thoughts and inducing sleep. I tried to manage my mania with just 50mg of quetiapine, which worked to a certain extent. However my depression deepened to the point of suicidal thoughts, at which point I started taking Lithium. Over the past 3 months I have reduced my quetiapine to 25mg 1 hour before going to bed. I noticed that my muscles were aching more and I was experiencing acute stiffness in my joints. I have not taken it for 2 nights now and the muscle pain and joint stiffness has disappeared. I have managed to sleep OK and will only continue use if needed as a sleep aid. M 43 9 months

5  Misdiagnosed as Bipolar Gained 120 pounds. Cognitive impairment. I was initially put on 50mg due to the stress of losing a loved one. Quickly built up a tolerance and ended up on 900mg. Lost my career, ability to form relationships, or control my finances. I weaned off the drug over about 7 years. This is an inappropriate medication for long term use. It is disabling and clearly a neurotoxin. Avoid at all costs. I'm now working, going to school, and enjoying life again. M 55 17 years

5  Bipolar Severe weight gain. Sedation, without Seroquel I cannot sleep. That being said, it is not a sleep aid. I have terrible real life like nightmares constantly. Constipation. At this point I am still worried about the Tardive Dyskinesia. Almost 20 years. But for my situation, It is worth the risk for the benefits. I have to be careful due to being up many times as night as it does make me very dizzy. It is not for everyone. I would personally prefer it over the older Trazodone or Klonopin which really knock me out and don't fully treat the bipolar. F 48 19 years

1  Chronic Insomnia I was prescribed Seroquel XR 600MG at h.s. for insomnia. The medication, without question, worked for my debilitating insomnia. However, what I could not tolerate was that I literally could not “get up” the next day. I was sleeping 12+ hours, and getting up around noon or even 1PM after going to bed at 12A. Obviously, I could not function during the day considering that “my day literally started at 1PM. My quack of a doctor has the philosophy of giving drugs to patients like candy, and practices the philosophy of giving “Uppers for downers, and downers for uppers” To mitigate the daytime grogginess, he actually put me on 90MG of Adderall (taken three times daily) His actions (and my naïveté) were becoming untenable. The other two side-effects consisted of experiencing “Akathisia’’ — which is a vague experience of internal restlessness..... For example, I found myself “walking around” I feel like I “said it all’ in the first column. However, I do not wish to scare people. Even though this drug clearly has deleterious effects on brain chemistry, the brain has something which is called Neuroplasticity meaning that even though a dangerous drug such as Seroquel can intermittently alter brain functioning, the brain can, and in fact, does consistently change (and actually grow neurons) to compensate for areas of the brain that have experienced damage, such that may be associated with Seroquel It is definitely possible to discontinue this drug. Titrate it down, and formulate a plan either with your doctor, or on your own. Do not hurry, or attempt to stop cold turkey. Try to develop a plan to decrease your dosage 10% a week. This may require you asking your doctor to prescribe you the 50mg tablets in some cases There is always hope, and even though this drug may have harmed you, (as it did to me) you have the power to ‘stop it’ and you have the power to: “Not Let it........WIN!  1  Bipolar Disorder (misdiagnosed) Huge weight gain, lethargy, dry mouth/trouble swallowing, confused and dizzy head, fatigue. I would advise people to think twice and then think twice again before taking this drug. My experience on this was awful. The only positive thing I can find to say about it is that it was very good for my insomnia. This stuff literally knocked me out cold within 30 minutes of taking it. In fact, I used to sleep 12 hours or more every night and could barely function during the day as I was so groggy and spaced out. My weight ballooned and I was permanently exhausted. I can’t stress the weight gain enough. Before taking this drug I was a slim guy in great shape for his age. By the time I finished I looked like I was wearing a fat suit and was unrecognisable! It didn’t even work as an antipsychotic for me - I literally went nuts on this stuff and had one psychotic episode/delusion after another and nearly lost everything. I’ve been off it for around 3 years and am still suffering. I’ve lost all the weight, but I don’t feel well at all. If you suspect you have a mental health problem, seek out a therapist and not a doctor who hands out pills. That’s what I did after wasting 10 years of my life with mental health quacks and the difference was amazing. These drugs don’t belong in your body any more than cigarette smoke or recreational drugs do. M 46 4 years

1  BPD II, Complex PTSD - ICD-11) Awful side effects, debilitating. Extreme sedation alternating with racing thought induced insomnia, unbelievable lack of motivation, insatiable hunger, suicidal ideation, disturbingly realistic, vivid and frightening nightmares, uncontrollable weight gain (10lbs in 3weeks), exceptional irritability with extreme emotional outbursts. dysfunctional inducing, ‘make me want to die’ medication. Maybe give Niacin a try instead - I’ve been on Niacin for nearly 6 months and still improving, with none of the side effects of Seroquel, mirtazapine (Remeron), olanzapene, and Aripiprazole (Abilify - which I refer to as ‘Disabilify’ due to the serious debilitating side effects that I suffered after 8 weeks... ) and the side effects of several other atypical psychiatric medications. Seroquel and other similar drugs induced side effects far worse, in my opinion, than the manifestation of the psychiatric illnesses. I take Niacin - 1500mcg x 3 per day concurrently with 500 mcg vitamin C. Niacin May produce elevated liver enzymes; check with your doctor. For more information See psychiatrist Abram Hoffer’s book “The truth about Niacin” available on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Niacin-Story-Wonderful-Healing-Properties/dp/1591202752). I combine the Niacin therapy with regular psychotherapy, CBT and additional psychiatric and family medicine care. In my opinion, The BigPharma companies have yet to figure out how to patent and make money with safe, effective, naturally occurring substances, like Niacin and other in-earth mineral, salt or metal substances; of which another is lithium (which does have weight gain and other long term side effects) I got past the “normal” intense flush of the niacin, which will most likely dissipate after several weeks anyway . I wonder how and if psychiatrists and enforcers would feel “functional, effective and capable” while taking the Seroquel: a most dysfunctional inducing medication for ANY length of time. Maybe talk to your dr about giving Niacin a try instead - I’ve been on Niacin for nearly 6 months and still improving, with none of the side effects of seroquel, mirtazapine, Aripiprazole - which I refer to as ‘Disabilify’ due to the serious debilitating side effects that I suffered during and after 8 weeks... Niacin ‘may’ produce elevated liver enzymes; check with your doctor F 53 3 weeks

5  Bipolar I Significant drowsiness* and weight gain, disorientation* starts after 10 minutes, blunted affect*, feelings of mild dissociation, and occasionally euphoria. Antipsychotics are notorious for for lowering or downright eliminating libido and causing other sexual dysfunctions. *reason 400mg is taken all at once just before bed I submitted a review at the end of December 2013 and thought it would be helpful to be followup. Seroquel is an effective anti-manic med. but it’s also FDA approved for bipolar depression. I occasionally experience psychoses when severely stressed and sleep-deprived and Seroquel helps with those symptoms also. These brief psychotic responses are extremely upsetting so my doctor also prescribed PRN 25mg pills (up to 100 mg) to be taken when my thoughts become jumbled, racing or irrational (delusional) including suicide ideation. The 25 mg pills are the lowest dosage available and tiny enough for sublingual dosing when I deteriorate rapidly. Taking 25 mg starts to slow my thoughts and “dial-down” intense emotions which produces a deep calming affect. (I would not consider such a change to be “emotional blunting” (negative) under the circumstances. I will take a second, third and final dose until noticeable improvement. Seroquel is deeply sedating so driving can become dangerous. Seroquel is a powerful drug with considerable side effects and patients sometimes develop other health problems because of taking this drug. My goal (with my doctor’s consent) is to decrease my dosage to the lowest amount possible. Seroquel has been very effective in alleviating symptoms but I’ve never felt truly comfortable taking it.  3  help with sleep Was prescribe to me to help with sleep when stopping drugs. Does his job for sleeping. I haven't be able to stop it AND sleep more than 3 hours till 8 years. And I have tried ! The longest try was 3 weeks without it, I finally gave up because I only did improve my sleep from 2-3 hours to 3-4 hours I was too exausted at that stage. Took me months the go down to 6,25 mg and sleep enough. I just learned here that stopping seroquel provokes insomnia. All doctors said to me seroquel has no withdrawal effect and all was in my head.
