SEROQUEL  (QUETIAPINE FUMARATE):  This medication is used to treat certain mental/mood conditions (such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, sudden episodes of mania or depression associated with bipolar disorder). Quetiapine is known as an anti-psychotic drug (atypical type). It works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural substances (neurotransmitters) in the brain. This medication can decrease hallucinations and improve your concentration. It helps you to think more clearly and positively about yourself, feel less nervous, and take a more active part in everyday life. It may also improve your mood, sleep, appetite, and energy level. Quetiapine can help prevent severe mood swings or decrease how often mood swings occur.   FDA Approval Date: 2005-10-04 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Extreme anxiety and anger issues extreme grogginess and feeling like a zombie I am a senior male who has severe sleep apnea since 1991 and use CPAP every night. However, I have extreme daytime sleepiness. My doctor wanted me to take Seroquel to help with my extreme anxiety, OCD and anger issues. I only took the medication for two nights but I felt like a zombie. The dosage was only 25mg. NO ONE who has sleep apnea should take this drug since it will make you so spaced out you are unable to function. M 75 2 days

3  OCD Weight gain right from the start of taking the Quetiapine. I never had a problem with weight before, but gained 40lbs in first year and always struggled since. Quetiapine, combined with an SSRI does help with OCD intrusive thoughts, but I am still very depressed. I am just existing, not living. I pushed myself for many years to overcome lack of motivation and apathy, but eventually it all got the better of me. Mental illness totally sucks. Side effects of meds are really bad, but often overlooked by “professionals” as they want us to shut up, take the pills and not bother them. I figured out that because Quetiapine increases prolactin to decrease dopamine in the brain, we are basically being zombiefied. Dopamine is good for motivation and feeling good. It's just tinkering with our brain chemistry to make us docile and compliant. F 46 17 years

1  Grief related depression insomnia Took this on one occasion and did not help with insomnia, keep waking up throughout the night with racing thoughts after very vivid dreams however could not move. I felt awful the next day and knew this was not the drug for me if I want to keep working. Will work through without it. It's beyond me why people are prescribed this it's just awful. Should not be used F 54 1 days

1  Treatment Res. Major Depression PHYSICAL Huge allergic reaction Hives, bloating, swollen joints, swollen lips and eyes, water retention in legs so are x3 the size, swollen lumps on soles if feet. PHYSICAL acid reflux. Anxiety, restlessness, anger and irritability, inability to nap even though exhausted, staying in bed feeling low and numb all day, crying for no reason. No interest in other people and inability to maintain conversation. Cloudy head all day, so exhausted unable to do tasks such as cooking meals need help to look after my kids from husband and parents as not feeling 'with it' This made me feel worse, I have re tried this drug x3 over six months each time its given me dehabiliting allergic reactions needing steroids. Psychiatrist set on pushing this on me not sure why. Just gone through 3 weeks on a 3rd attempt I cant live like this, having to take x4 strong prescription antihistamines just to try to control this and just does not work. I dont see why l should take even more drugs to support one my body clearly rejects? Also huge weight gain even when you are so depressed you cannot eat!!!! If your dr says it doesn't cause w.g if you eat healthily and dont snack exercise etc they are lying as it totally affects your metabolism!! I gained I was on orlistat for weight loss trying to lose weight from my first attempt on quetiapine (gained about 14 lbs) and it even stopped that from working. Ive only gone on to gain more weight due to being Ill with coronavirus and being too exhausted to exercise. I was around 134lbs I've easily gained 35lbs since I first tried Q in months. I've always been slim and keenly cardio exercises x4 a week before What's worse is that I did see a benefit first time around but not the times afterwards, it definitely caused me to feel worse not sure if this is because it affects my depression directly or because it caused anxiety and extreme fatigue and cloudy head adding to what I had already. All I know is that I cannot poison my body physically and mentally with this any longer F 33 31 days

4  Mood instability, anxiety Drowsiness, lack of motivation, weight gain Helped my mood to stabilise and helped anxiety. Helped with sleep as I would have highly disturbing vivid nightmares. Too afraid to come off so that's why I have been on so long. Currently on day 5 without it, all good apart from intense itching of my skin. Going to ride it out M 33 4 years

3  Recovery from a hormonal illness I needed it to help make me better initially but then needed to get off it to make me well, alot of head rushing, feeling off all the time, extremely tired on waking after alot of sleep, main issues. Helped me in my recovery from a hormonal illness, helping me sleep etc, but i realised I was having side effects that I wasn't getting before and i wasnt able to return to work due to the way I was still feeling so i took a chance and weaned off, wasn't a large amount anyway but since stopping the head rushing has stopped, I dont feel off all the time and im pleaded to say I'm back at work. Trust your judgement if you feel its part helping but part causing problems. F 44 8 months

5  PTSD, lack of sleep Vivid dreams, groggy wake-up (use caffeine to overcome) no weight gain until I stopped smoking, slightly high blood sugar. Starting taking seroquel while on active duty and deployed in Iraq due to sleep problems and PTSD in 2009 at 25 mg, now retired from active duty and I take 200 mg before bedtime, If I don't take it, I will not go to sleep. Weight gain only after I stopped smoking in 2016, considering the small bad effects I rather take it than not. Recommend small dosage at first, plus be positive about life, it could be worse as I seen and experienced worse in Iraq. M 49 11 years

3  Sleep Disorder Weight gain, Cholesterol issues. The worst was Restless Leg Syndrome. Tapering is easy, knock 25-50mg off at a time for a few days. I went from 350 to 300 pretty easily, next step is 300 to 250 and I'll keep pushing to take more off because there's just too many side effects. M 38 5 years

1  Sleep and racing thoughts Just an awful drug for me. Instant zombie on lowest of dosing and no cease of racing thoughts. Did help with sleep the first few nights. Extremely powerful and caused/lead to some black holes memory wise for me. This one wasnt for me. I was groggy even minutes after taking it. Memory gaps and lethargic state were terrifying. 48 7 days
