SEROQUEL  (QUETIAPINE FUMARATE):  This medication is used to treat certain mental/mood conditions (such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, sudden episodes of mania or depression associated with bipolar disorder). Quetiapine is known as an anti-psychotic drug (atypical type). It works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural substances (neurotransmitters) in the brain. This medication can decrease hallucinations and improve your concentration. It helps you to think more clearly and positively about yourself, feel less nervous, and take a more active part in everyday life. It may also improve your mood, sleep, appetite, and energy level. Quetiapine can help prevent severe mood swings or decrease how often mood swings occur.   FDA Approval Date: 2005-10-04 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  Bipolar Disorder None. This has enabled me to stabilize my mood and prevent mania maybe 98% of the time. A higher dose would make me too tired. It does not cure mania. It just keeps it at bay. F 59 15 years

5  CPTSD So far I love it. I used to cry every single day from trauma and now I don't. I feel like this pill dries my eyes. Yes it is emotionally blunting but this is what I need. I feel things too deeply. I needed a break from being sad. So far I am pleased . F 32 2 months

5  Bipolar disorder Increased appetite but not a problem when taken last thing at night. A little groggy in the morning but easily solved with a coffee and nowhere near as bad as insomnia-induced grogginess Absolute life changer, 200mg nightly allows me to sleep after decades of insomnia. 25 or 50mg taken as needed to mitigate depression, rage and/or mania on the fly works well. Clearly a lot of people have had problems with seroquel (quetiapine) but I can't recommend it highly enough. If your bipolar controls your life, as it did mine, quetiapine can give you your agency back. Speaking of which, you'll only gain weight if you allow it. M 47 10 years

5  Bi-polar disorder After having taken this large dosage, I began to experience toxicity almost overnight. I had to cut the dose to 600 mg. This medication has made living possible to me. It has also made me pre-diabetic, and I have gained weight. But I am sane, which has more meaning to me than any of the side effects that I have. M 61 3 years

5  Anxiety/depression/sleep Weight gain and lack of sexual desire Very vivid dreams which I actually enjoy and look forward to each night. This medication has helped my anxiety and depression INCREDIBLY plus it puts me right to sleep. I have tried numerous medications, and this is the one that has finally worked for me. It has been life changing in the most positive of ways. The only downside is some weight gain and lack of sexual desire - almost nonexistent. But the benefits FAR outweigh the negatives. I no longer have panic attacks nor feel like I am just "existing". F 43 6 months

5  PTSD, lack of sleep Vivid dreams, groggy wake-up (use caffeine to overcome) no weight gain until I stopped smoking, slightly high blood sugar. Starting taking seroquel while on active duty and deployed in Iraq due to sleep problems and PTSD in 2009 at 25 mg, now retired from active duty and I take 200 mg before bedtime, If I don't take it, I will not go to sleep. Weight gain only after I stopped smoking in 2016, considering the small bad effects I rather take it than not. Recommend small dosage at first, plus be positive about life, it could be worse as I seen and experienced worse in Iraq. M 49 11 years

5  Misdiagnosed as Bipolar Gained 120 pounds. Cognitive impairment. I was initially put on 50mg due to the stress of losing a loved one. Quickly built up a tolerance and ended up on 900mg. Lost my career, ability to form relationships, or control my finances. I weaned off the drug over about 7 years. This is an inappropriate medication for long term use. It is disabling and clearly a neurotoxin. Avoid at all costs. I'm now working, going to school, and enjoying life again. M 55 17 years

5  Bipolar Severe weight gain. Sedation, without Seroquel I cannot sleep. That being said, it is not a sleep aid. I have terrible real life like nightmares constantly. Constipation. At this point I am still worried about the Tardive Dyskinesia. Almost 20 years. But for my situation, It is worth the risk for the benefits. I have to be careful due to being up many times as night as it does make me very dizzy. It is not for everyone. I would personally prefer it over the older Trazodone or Klonopin which really knock me out and don't fully treat the bipolar. F 48 19 years

5  Bipolar I Significant drowsiness* and weight gain, disorientation* starts after 10 minutes, blunted affect*, feelings of mild dissociation, and occasionally euphoria. Antipsychotics are notorious for for lowering or downright eliminating libido and causing other sexual dysfunctions. *reason 400mg is taken all at once just before bed I submitted a review at the end of December 2013 and thought it would be helpful to be followup. Seroquel is an effective anti-manic med. but it’s also FDA approved for bipolar depression. I occasionally experience psychoses when severely stressed and sleep-deprived and Seroquel helps with those symptoms also. These brief psychotic responses are extremely upsetting so my doctor also prescribed PRN 25mg pills (up to 100 mg) to be taken when my thoughts become jumbled, racing or irrational (delusional) including suicide ideation. The 25 mg pills are the lowest dosage available and tiny enough for sublingual dosing when I deteriorate rapidly. Taking 25 mg starts to slow my thoughts and “dial-down” intense emotions which produces a deep calming affect. (I would not consider such a change to be “emotional blunting” (negative) under the circumstances. I will take a second, third and final dose until noticeable improvement. Seroquel is deeply sedating so driving can become dangerous. Seroquel is a powerful drug with considerable side effects and patients sometimes develop other health problems because of taking this drug. My goal (with my doctor’s consent) is to decrease my dosage to the lowest amount possible. Seroquel has been very effective in alleviating symptoms but I’ve never felt truly comfortable taking it.  5  Anxiety & Insomnia Food cravings (manageable!) and initial morning grogginess. I've found Seroquel to be the best drug so far to treat my anxiety and insomnia. I've tried 10+ antidepressants and have not been able to tolerate their side effects. I've also been able to stop benzos since commencing Seroquel and very rarely have the urge to have a Valium, and I somehow manage to beat the urge! Apart from food cravings on Seroquel (manageable!) and some initial morning grogginess, there's nothing much else to report. I'm very happy with the results! M 33 2 months

5  Bipolar II Disorder for the first week, I would have crying spells at night for no apparent reason Seroquel was the first medication that allowed me to feel HAPPY. I had struggled with depression (now diagnosed Bipolar II) for four years before taking it and honestly didn't know what being happy felt like. I usually respond to medications quickly if they are effective for me and within three days I could function like I normal human being. F 20 7 months

5  PTSD/MDD/GAD/insomnia/panicdisorder Very calming and sleep-inducing when taken at night. No real adverse effects for me. Sometimes I feel my emotions are a little stunted, but I was highly emotional before so it’s not necessarily bad. My anxiety is under control for the first time in years since my trauma, and it has allowed me to use less benzos as well. I use Seroquel in conjunction with Zoloft, Klonopin and Xanax (which I now use rarely because panic attacks are scarce thanks to Seroquel). I never thought I could live a semi-normal life again after my trauma but this drug brings me back down to earth. I do not feel sluggish or terrible during the day, just calm and not worrying about every little thing anymore. I can do my job more efficiently and have no problems thinking or feeling slow as others have reported. Please note that people are more likely to report bad results than good in anything (yelp, Glassdoor, etc.), and I think that’s the case for drugs as well. I don’t think the average score really reflects how people feel in a wider scale, because most people aren’t on here telling you the positives. Seroquel saved my life... it was prescribed to me as an off-label insomnia treatment since no other sleep meds would work. I would often go a week without even a wink of sleep, be shaking uncontrollably throughout the day and night, have panic attacks constantly, would start my morning vomiting from stress, and couldn’t think straight. I finally feel normal again. F 28 8 months

5  Bipolar w/ manic episodes Finally able to sleep well through the night. For me gaining weight has always been a problem and I've gained about 12 lbs since taking this medication. Some people see the weight gain as a negative while this is a positive for me. I have also experienced what finally feels like a "balance" in my life. I'm able to get my words out. I don't hold my feelings back anymore and I love it. I have not experienced anything negative while taking this medication. What works for some may not work for others. F 28 4 months

5  Bipolar, severe depression Zombie effect, but needed my brain to slow down. Helped me stop shaking. But...weight gain is out of control. I've always been slim and athletic, now I'm plump. Ugh...makes me sick. I'm slowly going down on my dosage and trying to get some life back. I really hope my racing thoughts and my trembling don't come back. F 56 2 years

5  bipolar depression Seroquel has given me a sense of well being that no other med has done. I take 300 mg at night. I'm willing to put up with the side effects such as sleeping 12 hrs each night, some muscle cramping, and digest. issues. I have to be careful of my diet but some of that has come with age. I'm 72 and have dealt with bi-polar disease since 1990's when rapid cycling became worse and I was finally diagnosed in 1994. I am trying to come off Pristiq because even with med. insurance, I was paying almost $400/month for this med. Down to 1 pill/day and still cost $165/month.Highway robbery by another name! Am having stomach issues withdrawing from Pristiq but I will continue Seroquel. I am fortunate that due to my age I can schedule my life around Seroquel side effects. I'm certain this would be difficult to do as a young person with job and/or family to raise. After I'm finished with Pristiq, I want to try a lower dose of Seroquel - down to 200 mg/night but I'm in no hurry. Coming off Pristiq I ha F 72 7 years
