I have been on about any pain medication you could name and Kadian has been a life saver. I am currently taking 600mg daily (300mg in a.m. and 300 in p.m). To counter the side affects I use Miralax for constipation which is now over the counter. It can be used daily for years and not affect your system unlike most laxative/stool softeners which are not recommended for over 1 week. The drowsiness is controlled by taking Provigil. | Before Kadian I had to use a walker (I was 30yrs old). I could hardly function enough to take care of my children, get dressed, do my hair, laundry- much less be a quality spouse to my husband! My pajamas have terrible body odor on them where the sweat was and I have a river of sweat running down my chest. I wake up in a chill from being drenched. | Because of the side effects mentioned, I decided that although the kadian was working to curtail my severe mid-back pain, it wasn't worth the side effects. I went from 20 mg. twice a day to 30 mg. twice a day about one month after I started taking it because my pain level had increased. But then the problems voiding my bladder and bowels and nightsweats became so awful that I started taking only one 30 mg. pill a day. That allowed me to urinate fine and also alleviated the severe constipation as long as I sometimes take a laxative but the nightsweats continue every night and begin shortly after I fall asleep. I like that I don't have any high with kadian and that I can function like normal on it, but...the constipation, nightsweats and inability to urinate are completely unacceptable to me. The pain from not being able to eliminate properly is as bad or worse than the pain that causes me to take kadian so in my opinion that doesn't make any sense! I have to really concentrate on having regular elimination, and to insure that I do, I must take stool softeners and laxatives. I still anticipate bleeding and pain with bowel movements. And, I had migraine headaches in the beginning of my Kadian therapy but they have abated. I don't "feel" any different when I take the Kadian, like high or lightheaded, but I have an overall sense of being sick. If I have to choose between Kadian and patches, I choose Kadian only because I need to float in water to totally stop the pain in my back. I can't be in water with the patch, simple as that. Otherwise I'd still be on the patches. | I was on Fentanyl patches for many years, and worked my way up to 75 mg. every three days . Finally, I complained about the inability to swim or shower without the patch falling off, regardless of the glues and plastic covers I used. So, doctor put me on Kadian, even though I was morphine intolerant, by my own admission. He told me there was no substitute for the patch, other than morphine. At the end of my rope, I was determined to make the Kadian work. It took several months for the headaches to stop, and the constipation is an ongoing problem. I also need a C-PAP now because the medication has given me sleep apnea.(respiratory depression) All in all, morphine is an icky drug, it has no redeeming value whatsoever except for it's pain relief. Anything that relieves my pain is worth the effort and additional suffering I go through with the Kadian. I can't say it works any better or worse than the patches. I take 50 mg twice a day. I cannot get it where I live and am now without transportation. My SSDI is over $560.00 per mo and I do not qualify for county transportation. If only I had not gone to college. Doctors need more education. I am in an illegal drug saturated area which makes it more difficult. I must see the doctor monthly or no Rx. What gives? I made $90,000 per year and now may not survive because of it. I find that if I take Kadian as prescribed that it works continuously and quite well. The side effect of constipation has been easily relieved by taking OTC Dulcolax...I take 2 rather than just 1 and only have to reply on it 2 per week. I also take Neurontin, Zanaflex and Nabutome...I have found that they all work quite well together albeit I still have my bad pain days.
