ZYPREXA  (OLANZAPINE):  Olanzapine is used to treat certain mental/mood conditions (such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder). It may also be used in combination with other medication to treat depression. This medication can help to decrease hallucinations and help you to think more clearly and positively about yourself, feel less agitated, and take a more active part in everyday life. Olanzapine belongs to a class of drugs called atypical antipsychotics. It works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural substances in the brain. Talk to the doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment (especially when used by teenagers). See also Precautions section.   FDA Approval Date: 1997-09-09 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  Bipolar 1 Weight gain only Zyprexa saved my life. I was experiencing psychotic symptoms and Manic depressive swings. I take 20 mg at night, and it has calmed me and brought me back down to earth many times. I have gained quite a lot of weight, but the pros well outweigh the cons. F 31 6 years

1  Doctor prescribed Sleepy, slowness of thoughts, deep sleep for long periods at night.Decided to stop as feel significantly slowed down and feel drugged, sleep very deep and unusual. Have done some reading and feel cheated by the psych doctor who prescribed this ...I'm not psychotic, but have problems with depression....have decided I would rather be my imperfect self than someone else....hope the withdrawal is not too horrendous...but have only been taking this since December, so am keeping fingers crossed and hoping for the best..  1  "A granny dose to help (me) sleep." A buzz in my brain and a chemical taste in my mouth as soon as I woke in the morning - both one second each. Haven't been able to remember my dreams since. Not huge problems but clearly something strange was happening, and has happened. F 54 12 days

1  Drug-induced Psychosis -Memory loss and cognition issues, confusion -personality changes -Eye dryness -mouth Dryness -Dry flakey skin -hair loss -Low testosterone, LH & FSH -ataxia -severe insomnia -Suicidal ideation -Major depression -digestive issues -constipation -frequent urination -Agoraphobia -muscle spasms -peripheral neuropathy -burning sensation in head -extreme fatigue -brittle and ridged finger nails -multiple loss of toe nails -mild kidney damage (stage 2/5) -6month+ Post acute withdrawal syndrome (including inability to sleep for multiple months despite alternative treatments) Prior to Zyprexa I was an extremely healthy(no issues) 195lb university athlete, with an 80+ average and the president of two university societies. I’m now being investigated for Sjogren’s disease an auto immune disease than can be drug induced. Especially because the conditions of the disease often require a large fluctuation in dopamine or testosterone as well as an impact on the immune system all of which this drug provides. This drug can cause diabetes, brain damage and many other concerning physical health issues and it can also cause anhedonia, depression and suicidal thoughts in those who havnt had them before. Avoid neuroleptics at all costs if possible, seek psychotherapy and excercise and diet changes as an alternative, low dose benzodiazepines can also be dangerous but much less so than these drugs. zyprexa has been the center of billions worth of lawsuits due to damage to patients. Avoid at all costs. seroquil isn’t much better but low dose can be a much better alternative to Zyprexa. M 26 8 weeks

5  Bipolar Disorder Weight gain, insatiable appetite, drowsiness. DO NOT STOP TAKING THIS COLD TURKEY!!!! I made that mistake and ended up missing three days of work because I was SO sick!!! PLEASE work with your doctor if you desire to stop taking it. This medicine was a game changer for me. I felt like I had my life back. I was more aware of everything around me, could think clearly, my thoughts were organized. I noticed things in my town I'd been missing my entire life! I was able to sit and watch movies and actually hear the words the actors were saying because my thoughts were finally slowed down. My nightmares went away and I was able to sleep soundly through the night. It felt like a miracle drug!! Unfortunately I gained over 30 pounds on it and my doctor insisted we change it. I HATE taking medication, but I actually fought to stay on this one another month. As my weight continued to climb, we ended up stopping the Zyprexa. If it wasn't for the weight gain, I don't think I would have ever stopped taking it. F 33 3 months

3  Bipolar disorder I am not really sure if this medication is working for me. It has made me hungry. I try to ignore the hunger pangs and only eat my main meals. I cut down the portions drastically. I gained 30 lbs. I was very petite and now I'm not. I went from a size 0 to a 4. That's a big difference to get accustomed to. I excercise 3 -4 days a week as well. F 35 8 months

5  insomnia, agitation Not much, but I don't take it regularly. Maybe some agitation or heightened state about 18 to 24h after taking it. Really makes me sleep when nothing else does. Always works. 2.5mg will usually be sufficient, too. Never needed more than 5mg. Will use sparingly given the risks involved with regular use. But I truly love it-- it helps when I need it. I have to take it some 2h before bedtime, since it takes some time to work. And either take it early or be able to sleep the next morning. It's very calming and pleasant and hasn't caused habituation or lost effectiveness for me. F 28
