5  osteoporosis no side effects. I went from osteoprosis to osteopenia. I have fallen, but have never broken any bones. I have not had any ill-effects and started the drug in an experimental program when it first came out. I have been extremely pleased with the effect of the drug. see above M 81 30 years

1  diagnosis of osteopenia Gradually increasing pain in lower back and legs. No improvement in DEXA, ever. I have stopped taking Fosamax 9 months ago, still have leg and back pain, but is handled by Advil. I have read the literature, and will never take this medicine again.  5  Osteoporosis None I have taken the daily for 14 years and I am in good health and look much younger than my age. I am on tennis teams, swim every day, walk, and ride my bike several times a week. My teeth are excellent. My bone density tests each time have shown improvement to the extent I was able to stop Fosamax two weeks ago. I will get another bone density in two years and if I back track I will start it up again. F 69 14 years

4  Osteoprosis After taking fosomax for 14 year, I recently have heart burn , I stoped taking fosomax and my heart burn is much better, but am worry about my osteoprosis, since it helped me for my back osteoprosis , but did not improve my hip problem.  2  Weak Bone Density Acid reflux After breast cancer at age 46 and taking Tamoxifen for 5 years my mind and bone density suffered. I've taken 70 mg of Fosamax once a week for 14 years but my bone density has not improved above spine osteoporosis (T-score -2.5) and femur osteopenia (T-score -1.5). My general practitioner advised me to discontinue taking it because it could be in fact weakening my bones. I’m not sure what to do. F 66 14 years

5  Severe Osteoporosis I have mild joint pain, but it is impossible to say that is from the Fosamax. I attribute it to the aging process and my strenuous exercise. I do need annual upper endoscopy because of a family history of cancer and it does show mild esophogeal erosions, so now I take Prilosec as a protectant. I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis in my forties, after ovarian cancer surgery (and, thus, instant menopause, with loss of hormones) and chemotherapy. The Fosamax has made an unbelievable improvement in my bones and I no longer have osteoporosis, but only some osteopenia. I wonder if there could be other reasons all these women experience such problems? I am afraid NOT to continue taking it! F 56 13 years

2  osteopenia osteonecrosis of the jaw, atrial fibrillation My mother took fosamax for 13 years with improved density tests and no problems until a small sore in her mouth did not heal. This progressed to something sharp at the site and she went to the dentist. He removed a 1/4" piece of bone and said in 25 yrs. of practice he had never seen anything like it. My mom had her own teeth and had no extractions. She promptly stopped fosamax in 2006. She had a flare up of the osteonecrosis and her oral surgeon prescribed an antibiotic which cleared up the infection. However, she developed a rash and was told she could not take that antibiotic again. In January 2008 a doctor prescribed prednisone for a rash (contraindicated with a dx.of osteonecrosis, but she did not know) Within 3 wks. her jaw swelled and was sore to the touch. She was put on an antibiotic then the pain spread to her throat and another antibiotic was added. She died 1 week later following a seizure (side effect of the strong antibiotics), and a fatal arrythemia. She did have a bad fall in April of 2007 and nothing broke. She went on Fosamax prior to it being approved. She got the drug for free and never had a problem until years later. They had recommended I take it at age 44. My own dentist has a patient in her 50's very disfigured after developing ONJ after receiving implants and having been on fosamax. The oral surgeon said this is just the tip of the iceberg because so many are taking Fosamax at such young ages. F 83 13 years

2  osteoporosis I started taking Fosamax at 38years, I am now 50 through all of this time I have suffered in silence with shocking joint and muscle pain. For whatever reason today 12 years later have searched the side effects and read other postings. I burst into tears and as I type this I am crying. I think out of relief that I my not be as old as I feel. I will stop taking this drug imediately. I am so sore all the time, and I do believe that I have the same pain as all you others. I will take my chances with my bones. Thank-you all for your input, if it wasnt for you all I may still be suffering. I see a bright future for me now. F 50 12 years

1  osteoporosis-osteopenia I've had 3 stress fractures to feet/toes and one stress fracture to right femur. I had a severe, almost spiral fracture, to left femur in 2007 I was placed on Fosomax @ 1997. I am the perfect profile for osteoporosis, small frame, family history, early menopause. I started out daily and changed to weekly dosage 2004.I've had constant aches & pains in legs,a couple of minor accidents, fell down three steps & broke ribs, three separate stress fractures on feet from a jarring step movement. Never thought much about it until 8/08 when I twisted my left leg while shopping & broke left femur in two places, requiring surgery, pins and a rod. Then in 2/08 I jarred same side foot coming off a step& developed a stress fracture that won't heal. I now have a stress fracture on the right side femur after walking on the beach and going up and down hills in Hawaii. Both femurs burned, as does the the foot, before the fractures. I forgot the Fosomax on my trip and haven't gone back on it! I never thought it was my bones, thought it was pulled muscles! None of my doctors saw any connection with Fosomax extended use.  3  osteoporosis None that I am aware of. I followed the directions religiously always waiting 60 or more minutes before drinking coffee or eating and always standing or sitting up. Really my answer to my satisfaction with Fosamax should be: don't know. Have had several bone scans over the years, with good readings for my age, alledgedly because of the 70 mgs weekly Fosamax. After the last one 2 & 1/2 years ago my hip and spine osteoarthritis had become so bad the technologists couldn't get a good reading. They did my forearm but that was inconclusive. Have within the last year had both hips replaced and my life is changed marvelously. I can now walk totally painfree and get some walking, mowing and other gardening in often. Have decided to STOP taking Fosamax because I read that after 10 years, it might not be helping me any longer, and in fact is perhaps making my bones brittle. F 71 10 years

3  osteopenia, osteoporosis None that I'm aware of. I am 62 years old, small-boned, white, and 5 feet tall. I began taking Fosamax 2 years after my last period when I had a BMD done and my bones were really bad for my age at that time - 52. I have taken Fosamax for almost 10 years, beginning with the 10mg a day, then switching to the 70mg once a week. I always take it as prescribed, and have tolerated it very well. After 2 years of taking it, my bone density improved without changing my lifestyle. I continued to get checked every 2 years, and the improvement has slowly leveled out. My last BMD (this month) showed no improvement. While I have had no problems from Fosamax, I am concerned about continuing on this medication if it's not doing any more good. I am considering stopping it, and continuing with my weight-lifting, good diet, good lifestyle. F 62 10 years

3  Osteopenia Aching and swelling in legs especially knees, pain in shoulders, hips and feet. For the past 18 months I have been seeing orthopedics, rheumatologists and endocrinologists. I have had physical therapy, MRIs, sonograms and batteries of blood test for auto-immune diseases to figure out what was wrong with me. Everyone knew I was taking Fosamax. No one suggested I stop and see if my symptoms improve. I was always very active and full of energy. Now I can barely get myself moving and it takes everything in me to get motivated. I'm tired and depressed. My cousin suggested I stop the Fosamax as she developed severe chest pain when she was on it. I have been taking the 70mg weekly doses but I have decided to stop it and wait and see what happens. I'd rather use natural methods to help my bones and feel my old self again. F 58 10 years

2  Osteopenia I have been taking Fosamax for over 10 years. Everything was going fine until last Nov 5 2006 when I fell trying to roller skate and fractured my tibia and fibula and all the tendons in my right ankle. When my surgeon opened me up the bones completed shattered "like glass". My surgeon told me that this condition was probably brought on by the Fosamax. Today is Feb 19 2007 and I finally had the last of my stitches removed post op from the hardware removal. The 5 inch plate was left attached because of the severity of the fracure. I am 60 years old, healthy and energetic. I have been on Fosamax for so many years I'm not sure what I should think about what effect it had on my ankle bones. I understand the half-life of Fosamax is ~~ 8 years. So even if I changed to another medication the damage from Fosamax has already been done. F 60 10 years

2  osteoporosis After taking Fosamas for close to 10 years, I am now wondering if the development of fibromyalgia and a pain in my hip that just won't go away were caused from this drug. The drug kept my osteoporosis in check but did not cure me. I discontinued use when I heard about the jaw bone issue and after taking care of the root problem which was my parathyroid. I began taking it for osteoporosis around the age of 40. Several years ago I had a parathyroidectomy - the root cause of the osteoporosis was parathyroid hyperplasia. Please check out www.parathyroid.com - it may be your problem as well. F 51 10 years

1  osteoporosis My mother was taking fosamax from 1995 until 2005 for osteoporosis. I believe she was part of a clinical trial. Her osteoporosis improved. However, her medical records say she was barely tolerating the drug and that she had severe esophogeal ulcerations, nausea, jaw bone loss and vertigo from the inner ear. She was told to continue the drug. October 2005, she began to have trouble swallowing, she was initially told it was anxiety, but was then diagnosed with Esophogeal cancer and died nine months later in July 2006, she was 80 years old. I have put this comment in for my mother, but have been diagnosed with osteopenia myself. I will not take fosamax if it progresses on to osteoporosis because I don't want to get esophogeal cancer like my mother. That was an experience too horrible for words. I am consoling myself that my grandmother was a skinny thing like me but never broke a bone in her 86 years. F 80 10 years

1  Osteopenia I have been on Fosamax for about 10 years. I have been having left shoulder pain, so bad I can not get dressed. Can not sleep well at night for hurting so bad, can not turn over in bed. Hurting for about 3 months now, went to the ortho doctor said it was bursitis and gave me a cortisone inj, but it didn't get any better, so I started taking an antibiotic and skipped taking my Fosamax for that week and it seemed to get alittle better, but I taken my Fosamax this morning and now my upper arm and shoulder is aching again and the movement is once again limited. I wanted to google Fosamax to see if anyone else was having the same problems, and low and behold I am very suprised at the people that are having the same symptoms. Also about 2 years ago my right thumb started dislocating and is very stiff. I am very limited on using it and now my left arm. The doctor has done xrays on both my shoulder and thumb and said the bones looked fine and he was very puzzled about my thumb, he just said h I am a nurse and right handed at that. I can not use my right thumb nor my left arm. It has effected my job. No more Fosamax for me...... F 52 10 years

1  Osteopenia Although it can't be proven without more investigation, I recently removed myself from Fosamax when reading a medical article recently advising that Fosamax was cited as causing atrial fibrilation in some patient. Having been diagnosed with A.Fib about four years ago, I decided that this may be connected to the Fosamax. Since the end of April when I quit taking this drug, I have had very little episodes of A.Fib - at least a 90% drop in symptoms. I don`t think this is a coincidence. I would like to hear if anyone else is currently in this situation. Fosamax provided little improvement to my osteopenia. My last bone density test indicated a continued deterioration in my left hip and spine. F 68 10 years

1  Osteoporosis Pain in arms, buttocks, groin, hips, arms, knees, calves, shins, hives on upper torso, feeling of "something" crawling on me. Recently had cortisone in L arm and steroid in R arm and after 3 months of limited movement (getting dressed was a painful ordeal) my arms are much better. Painful to walk after sitting for awhile with the need to stand in one place until pain subsides. Knee pain was so severe that I had Arthroscopic surgery on both knees, which did little to eliminate pain in L knee. My ribs become dislocated easily and I get muscle strains frequently. Doctor recommended P.T. but therapist dismissed me after 6 sessions because nothing improved. I stopped taking Fosamax 2 years ago when I read about Osteonecrosis but doctor convinced me, after 10 months off the drug, that I needed bone protection for my severe Osteo, so I started it again then discontinued for good 2 months ago. I am also on a nutritional program and am feeling much better and hope for continual improvement. My L knee which was so bad I was considering a knee replacement has improved so much I can now bend it and walk down stairs w/o pain. Groin/hip/buttocks pain are better as well as the hives/rash. I will take my chances w/o Fosamax or any other bisphosphonate just to have my life back. Merck needs to be held accountable. I only hope we can all get back to who we were before Fosamax.  1  'possible' osteopenia I started getting bone deposits in my face within a year after starting the drug. I was assured they had nothing to do with Fosamax so I continued. I now have bone loss in my jaw as well! I am convinced the eruptions on my face are from Fosamax. I've also experienced pain in my shoulder and right arm that noone has been able to diagnose. And, I was refused dental implants because of the bone loss caused by the Fosamax. I would not recomment it to anyone as there are too many unknowns. The osteoma cutis on my face has gotten worse and there is no known way of getting rid of it. I've stopped taking the drug, but the damage has been done. I've also been hospitalized for an apparent heart attack. It was found I didn't have any heart problem, and there too no diagnosis was found. F 72 9 years

1  osteoporosis I have constant heartburn and gas. My feet are extremely painful, especially the soles of my feet, I cannot go bare feet even in the house. I have sore joints, painful knees and lower back pain and my right hip hurts so much that I have trouble sleeping. I have been on fosomax for almost 9 years and I thought my arthritis was just getting worse, the last few months have been shear hell, I just stumbled onto this site and realize that it could be the fosomax. I have been on the 70mg 1x week for about three years, prior to that it was 10 mg every day. I will stop taking the fosamax. I mentioned my symptoms to my doctor and he says it is just the osteoarthritis. If I sit for long periods of time I have trouble getting up, I have trouble getting out of the car and I have gained weight even though I have not changed my eating habits. I used to go for long walks, now I cannot walk very far. I also love gardening and cutting the lawn. This has become a real chore because of the pain. On my next visit to my doctor I will tell him about this site and that my symptoms are the same as other persons taking the drug and ask if perhaps he can prescribe something with less side effects.  1  Stage II Osteoperosis Severe muscle pain, spasm, floaty lightheaded feeling, lots of myofacial inflammation that never got better in the 8 years I took the drug. My doctors denied it could be side-effects from Fosamax. I finally found one who advised me to stop the drug in June. Six months later, I am a new pain-free, energetic healthy person. I will NEVER take this drug again!!! If you stop the drug you will get better. Just be patient and give it time. My symptoms decreased gradually over time.  1  low bone density After six years of taking Fosamax, I slipped in ice in my driveway and broke my femur (thigh bone). Two years later, still taking Fosamax, I fell in the snow and my other femur snapped before I hit the ground. There is evidence that, while Fosamax increases bone density, it does not increase bone strength - in fact, it may cause bones to become brittle. Now I am stuck with this substance in my bones for the next half dozen years or so. F 58 8 years

1  Osteopenia Bone pain, neck pain, leg cramps, blurred vision, some stomach upset, ringing in ears. Reading all the posts and seeing so many of my own symptoms has convinced me that Fosamax is responsible. I have had these symptoms for years - I guess I thought I was just getting old, stressed. But something in the back of my mind thought that Fosamax could be responsible. I asked my doctor last visit if I could go off, and she said no. Does she get a payback? This is the only medication I take beside Ibuprofen. I'm going off Fosamax today. At least I will notice if I'm feeling better. I wonder how long that will take.  1  Osteoporosis I posted on here in 2008 and am wondering if others have experienced arthritic symptoms throughout their bodies. I have so many areas of pain that are attributed to arthritis---neck, back, shoulders, arms, knees, hips. My family members lived into their nineties with very few health issues and I feel like I have a genetic defect. I stopped taking Fosamax 2 years ago and still live with pain on a daily basis. Doctors tell me I have arthritis but the pain is severe, deep and constant. A lot of times I will get remission of pain in one area only for it to develop in another area. I take natural solutions but still have not been able to eliminate the pain. If I could give a lower rating for this drug, it would be in a minus zone. It NEEDS to be taken off the market. I even had gum surgery and never had one thing wrong with my teeth prior.  1  osteopenia and then osteoporosis Within months of starting Fosamax I began having swallowing problems--food would get caught in my upper esophagus. Then my GYN prescribed Miacalcin drops instead, but they caused nosebleeds & headaches. Next I took once-monthly Boniva for 3 years, during which my spine lost another 5% of its bone density and my choking problems worsened. I began to worry that the large monthly Boniva tablet might get stuck in my esophagus (my GYN warned that if it did I’d have to go to the ER quickly to prevent it eating through my esophagus). I'm a healthy person and it seemed as if bisphosphenates were hurting me more than helping me, so I took a 1-year vacation from Boniva, and after 2 or 3 months my choking problem disappeared entirely. Recently, after getting a worrisome DEXA result, I resumed Fosamax (weekly 70 mg liquid, to avoid worry about a pill getting stuck), and have now taken it for 2 wks. Within days I developed aching in my left jaw, neck, and shoulder, starting just below the F 65 8 years

5  Fibrous Dysplasia Occcasional heartburn and acid reflux - related to Fosamax?? This medication was the best thing that happened to me since I was diagnosed with this rare disease at age 18. The pain is GONE and I can have a normal active life. I have some of the problems mentioned in other posts, but don't we all? I can't really lay the blame on Fosamax. And I take 40 mg daily!!  4  Osteopenia Luckily I have no reaction once-weekly when taking Fosamax 70MG. Take pill then work out one hour on recumbent & incline-treadmill. Not sure if Fosamax (and/or Zocor 20MG) contributed to below: 1) Root canal (R bottom) possibly fr Fosamax OR due to large filling~. Slow healing then pain in area persisted for four years 2) Gums seem more recessed in last few years. Always had great gums & took good care of teeth. Floss at bedtime, brush 2x day 3) Bilateral Chronic Achilles Tendonitis for 2+ years 4) Tender all over to the touch past four years At first 2 year Bone Density check, Fosamax had moved range from Osteopenia into low-normal. At every 2 year density check, I slightly gain bone mass or remain unchanged. I have taken NO BREAK from Fosamax. Should I? Drank lots of milk during younger years, took plenty of Calcium during my 30-40s. Age 34 ovarian cancer - right fallopian and ovary removed. Age 38 periods stopped. I was prime to get osteoporosis.  3  Osteopenia None from the Brand name Fosamax as long as I followed the instructions to take it with a lot of tap water, don't lie down etc. However, when I changed to the generic Fosamax, I developed a rash and itching that cannot be attributed to anything else. I am super sensitive to the inactive ingredients which are different in generics. I have been on it for 7 years and my bone density had not really improved a lot until I stopped drinking DIET COKE. This is the thing that most women don't know. COCA COLA or any dark soda with phosphates is the WORST thing you can do for your bones. In 6 months after stopping the Coke - my BDS improved drastically. F 60 7 years

2  Tibial fracture, low bone density I have experiened moderately severe thigh pain for years---probably since starting taking Fosamax 7 years ago. I also have had L hip pain, but this is helped by glucosomine and chondriton. I have moderate knee pain also. I ache at night and the pain wakes me up. Walking after sitting is difficult and painful. Walking is improved after a dozen steps or so. Stretching my muscles does help relieve the pain, for some reason. This discomfort is gradually getting worse as time goes on. I've also had a salivary stone removed, plus xrays show spur formations on various joints. The bottom of my right foot has started tingling and acting like its falling asleep. I have complained to my doctor before and he has more-or-less just shrugged his shoulders. I plan to discuss with my doctor switching to Evista or something other than a biophasphonate when I see him in November (06). I agree, this site is great. F 69 7 years

1  osteoporosis Moderate joint and muscle pain on getting up from couch;pain in calf muscles for several steps. Seemed to get worse when I had to begin Tamoxifen. Have changed to Boniva and joint and muscle pain has almost disappeared. Had no GI symptoms. No jaw bone destruction. I believe Boniva (once a month) is a better choice for osteoporosis and the monthly dose being spread out probably helps with GI symptoms. I would not recommend Fosamax as it has bad side effects and seems to react adversely with Tamoxifen in causing joint and muscle pain. F 68 7 years

1  Bone Density After several years of taking fosomax, my aunt (who was otherwise quite healthy, comes from great genetic stock) is dying from myelodysplastic syndrome - when your bone marrow stops doing its job... I know in my heart it was caused by Fosomax. Fosomax targets the bones and there are no long term studies regarding prolonged use of Fosomax and its impact on blood marrow.  1  osteopenia Severe neck, shoulder, upper back pain Can anyone help me? How long will this pain go on?? Doctors don't seem to know and the Drug Company was not helpful. I was on Fosamax for 7 years and in pain for 6 months before discovering (for myself) that severe pain can be a side effect of Foxamax. The pain immediately diminished after I stopped taking the drug, but now seems to have reached a plateau and is with me always. I have been off Fosamax for 4 months. Will the pain ever go away???  1  osteopenia I didn't know any better UPDATE FROM 1YR AGO.1-12-07 (HOPE) CHECK THIS OUT I believe they are finally listening to us-http://www.fda.gov/cder/drug/InfoSheets/HCP/bisphosphonatesHCP.htm The FDA put out another ALERT yesterday, 1-7-08 My symptoms have improved over the year since stopping Fosamax. It's been slow going but I have HOPE. Hopefully, it didn't do pernament damage, who knows after being on it for sooo long. I do feel much better, overall. I probably will end up with osteoporosis though. My Mom of 81 has it(also on Fosamax)and her mother had it. I DO need to be better at weight exercise. But I will NEVER take this horrible stuff again. I'm working on getting my Mom of it. HOPE F 53 7 years

1  broke hip while rollerblading Severe leg pain - often feels as if the pain is deep in muscles; hip and knee pain; hair loss; small red spots on skin that will not go away; weight gain; most recently both jaws feel as if they are dislocated; bones in feet hurt terribly; swollen joints and muscle weakness. All symptons began after going on Fosamax. I've had numerous tests for these pains including MRI's, total body bone scans, injections of cortisone in joints, physical therapy for several months. Nothing worked. After doing research on Fosamax, I'm positive this is what has caused me such agony. The only other medicine I take is a very small dose of premarin. F 62 7 years

1  Osteopenia back, hip, joint and pain, tiredness and anxiety and, depression. bloated, aching bones & feet. leg swelling.Vertigo. DEVELOPED A HEART MUMMUR. I started taking Fosamax in 2000 as directed by my Dr. as I had ostopenia, took faithfully for 7 years. I developed all the symtoms that are listed. I had expressed my aching back, that was so painful, It took me along time to go to sleep. It hurt all the way through to my pelvic area. bottoms of feet hurt, I developed a heart mummur. I was bloated after eating(I am not overweight), had lots of gas. I was stiff after sitting and was hard to get up.I WAS SO STIFF IN THE MORNINGS IT WAS PAINFUL TO GET OUT OF BED. I just happened to hit upon this page. I wish I had googled Fosamax 7 years ago. I am sorry I have taken the drug and I would not take it for 5 million dollars. That is alot of $$. It is the worst drug I have ever taken. All the pain & problems came on gradually and I attributeD it to getting older. I hope I never make a mistake like this again. I am very disappointed that my Dr. did not take me off the drug sooner and listen to my complaints. I have been off Fosamax f F 69 7 years

5  Low Bone Density Results/Osteopenia I have not had any side effects. Fosamax has stopped my bone loss, it did not progress any further until I took Arimidex (after-cancer treatment) for 6 months, which resulted in lower bone density results after my last Dexascan recently. Have since stopped the Arimidex and will discuss how to proceed with my doctor. F 68 6 years

5  osteopoena None. Because my mother's spine had literally crumbled in her late eighties my doctor sent me to a university program where the treating physician did nothing but treat and research bone loss. My initial DEXA T-score was -2.5 after 2 years and 3 measurements on the same machine, by the same technician, read by the same doctor, my T-score was -0.4, a staggering improvement. If you are lucky enough to have no side effects this is an effective drug. If you can't take it and have osteoporosis I urge you to seek another solution.  3  pre osteoporosis I have been on it for several years (about 6 years). The last two years I've had acid reflux problems, and have been taking Nexium when necessary. The last few weeks, even Nexium doesn't work completely. I was interested to read the other posts, and have some other symptoms which I attributed to aging - sore knees, muscle cramps, and severe itching on feet. I will be doing my own little test and stoping the Fosamax for a couple of weeks before I see my doctor. When I've had bone density scans, the results have improved. I have also been exercising and working with weights, so I don't think the improvement is only due to Fosamax. I also take 1500 mg daily of Calcium Citrate. F 54 6 years

3  Osteoporosis For four years I took the daily 10mg dose of fosamax. I lost my insurance and stopped taking the drug. Five months later I was able to reinstate my insurance. My doctor switched me to the once a week 70mg dose. After two months my jaw began to ache big time just below the ear. My knees were also hurting and swelling. I found this site and looked for the sore jaw complaint. I found a few but I found alot to bone ache complaints. I stopped the 70mg dose and the knees went back to normal and the jaw pain subsided. I waited 5 months before trying the 10mg daily dose again. I am 30 days into this and do not have the side effects of the 70mg dose. M 58 6 years

3  osteoperosis I have been on Fosamax for 6+ years. Two years ago I started to have sporadic problems with the feeling that food was stuck in my throat and would not go down. It has gotten progressively worse - and now I seem to have constant problams with eating and swallowing. I thought it was just acid reflux and age(63), but now after reading the comments on this website I am considering going off Fosamax totally and waiting to see if I improve. Tired, joint stiffness, hot spot in roof of mouth, sore throat etc. etc. I was prescribed Fosamax more as a preventative - I have had 3 normal bone density tests (the proper one)at the 2nd one, I showed increased bone density BEFORE taking Fosamax....it was at that time Dr. suggest I take it since: I am slender, white, had a hysterectomy at 40 & the dreaded "I smoke" sin! I have had my recent bone density this year (2008) normal, don't need another for 5 years, I cannot remember a broken bone in my female said of the family, and believe me, I have a huge family.....I think this stuff can go in the trash.  2  Osteoprosis I am 56 and have taken Fosamax for about 6 years. I have recently felt that I have an 80 year old's health, rather than my own age. I have noticed in the last year that I have had increasing leg weakness. Knees hurt, thighs hurt. They often cause me to stumble and fall, on the merest hint of uneven ground, more and more often. This of course means I have more risk of broken bones. The very thing that Fosamax is supposed to be preventing!! I develped neck problems, which caused severe dizzyness problems 2 or 3 years ago and I still get dizzy attacks from time to time and neck pain all the time. Recently (last 5 months) I have had an extensive rash that took two months to clear, extreme fatigue continuously, attacks of diarreha, inability to shake a urinary infection, flu like symptoms on and off for months, worstening of the leg pains to the point of feeling that at times my legs will give out at any time, and stiffness in walking. I also had an stomach ulcer last year, that was sur With Fosamax I had osteoporosis that went down to osteopenie level, but now it is back to borderline osteoporosis again. And I have still had at least one broken bone per year. F 56 6 years

2  osteopenia At this time I can't put a rating on Fosamax.(well, I can't submit my comment w/o a rating, so my rating at this time is a false one [I think!]. I went to the dentist the other day, on my way home it was like a light bulb went on or should I say, 'a spot light'! Having some problems with calcium build up in my gums. They protrude out the sides of the gums (inner & outer), & get quite sore (ugly looking, too.) They have a name, but not sure of it. Anyway, on the ride home I thought of Fosamax & wondered if maybe there was a connection, so I researched the drug. Wow!! Do I feel stupid. I didn't come across any info about my gum issue, but was in tears reading about others taking this drug. I've have increasing pain, stiffness, joint issues, bottom of feet pain, ringing in ears, positional virtigo, tiredness, just down right feeling like my body is failing me. I blam it all on menopause. Doc says arthritis. (I think that's just the Doc's opinion). Never considered the d Checked w/my Doc., says it's ok to not use Fosamax & keep track of things. Bone scan to follow in a few months. I will continue w/calcium citrate & add stretching w/ lite weights. Interesting site on the subject is womentowomen.com HOPE F 52 6 years

2  osteoperosis I did not attribute ANY to fosamax..thought it was just aging. Now, I see: terrific cramps in all extremities. and actually ALL muscles. Especially my hands and feet. bloating, gas.. inability to digest certain foods, loss of energy I was taking evista for osteopenia. During this time, I developed reynauds symdrom.. which I never associated with anything except fate. ( Doctors had no suggestions either) After one year, during which time my osteopenia blossomed into osteoperosis, During this time, I developed plantar faschitis ( but I have bad feet so never associated it ..but now reading reports I wonder...) My gyn perscribed Fosamax. I have been taking it for years now, probably more than 6. crippling cramps in my hands, and feet especially.. ( when I brake suddenly in the car, I generally have to pull over to try to work out the pain in my foot ) I was sent to rheumatoid arthritius doctors, had blood tests etc, I was told to 'live with it' I also found I could no longer eat certain foods.. beans, bananas, I had 'flatulance' ..read that these things happen to aging women ! I have always had muscle pain and joint pain and arthritus runs int the family. now I wonder about all of this. I stopped taking fosamax a week ago, and wonder if I will lose any of these symptoms. My dr perscribed boniva. I got the perscription filled yesterday, ($$) and now after finding this site, I won't take it. Osteoperosis is no joke..my mother had it, my sister has it, is there no help for us that won't ruin our lives in another way ?? by the way, fosamax really helped my bone density..  1  Osteoporosis of femur After about 4 years of use, started having chest pains, or internal pains at about shoulder blade level, on an increasingly frequent basis. Also began having pains in knees at that time. Current symptom of right thigh pain may be related to all these years of biphosphonate use. Initially the chest-type pains were thought to be maybe heart problem, or gall bladder problem, or ulcers, etc. but no medical tests substantiated those hypotheses. When I switched from Fosamax to Actonel, the symptoms gradually disappeared. I was on Fosamax for 6 years, followed by 8 years on Actonel, and am currently on neither, for the last 2 months. For the six years I took Fosamax, my T scores for my left femur remained about the same, some years less than -2.5, some years a little better than that. I always took Fosamax on a daily basis, 5 mg dose. After learning about research studies suggesting that unusual low impact femoral fractures might be related to long-term biphosphonate use, and that some of those fractures were preceded by leg pain, I have stopped using Actonel and am hoping that I don't have a minor fall one day and find myself with a broken femur bone. I have kept good records of my 13 DEXA results over an 18 year period, and doctor's comments throughou F 66 6 years

4  Very poor bone density scan at 68 Only suffered severe pain with 70mg dose (before I was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia and medicine to deal with this) - put back on daily 10mg - no indigestion. Have experienced some muscle and joint pain. After initial bone scan showed poor bone density, prescribed fosamax; next scan 5 years later resulting in 14% increase in spinal bone density and 12% in hip density. I have experienced some joint pain and back spasm and loose bowel motions, but I have IBS anyway. I recently had a ligament problem at the base of the thumb on my left hand, and my right hand index finger has produced an arthritic knob on the second knuckle from the tip. The specialist report from the scan recommended continuing with the drug. I have a hiatus hernia and a history of acid reflux before taking medicine to block stomach acid (Losec 40mg daily). I have had no problem whatsoever with reflux or digestion with the 10mg dosage. I shall now experiment going off the drug for 3 months and monitor myself.  1  Osteopenia About three months ago, it was as if someone filled a bucket with illogical symptoms and dumped them on me all at once--all those mentioned on this site. I started going to doctors to see what had caused it, but since none of the symptoms are visible, I could tell that several of the doctors thought I was a hypochoncriac. The ENT did a CAT scan of my sinus and said he saw nothing to cause flu-like symptoms; the orthopedic surgeon's Xray showed no reason for joint pain, the eye doctor saw nothing amiss, etc. Two doctors had prescribed Fosamax and neither had warned me about side effects, plus--I feel so stupid now--I hadn't thought to research it on my own. Then I found this site and blessed the people who started it and the patients who have shared their experiences. The past year I had two hip replacements, so I had assumed that the thigh and calf pain was associated with surgery. Then when I read these comments, I realized I'd been experiencing side effects of Fosamax for sever Wonderful news! Yesterday I turned my head both left and right without pain, climbed two flights of stairs without calf pain, and--best of all--this morning I tasted my coffee!!  1  Prevention of osteoporosis Started out with a swollen middle finger on right hand and moved to my feet. Feet felt numb and very sore. Within 1-2 months of taking Fosamax, pain moved to all my muscles and my joints in my whole body. Thought I had MS or some awful disease I felt so bad. Usually a very active person & now I felt like a crippled 90-year old. Had blood tests--everything turned out negative. Experienced abdominal bloating, insomnia & felt horrible. Doctor NEVER MENTIONED or even suggested it was from the Fosamax. He diagnosed me as having Fibromyalgia. I posted an earlier feedback, but since I have been on it a lot longer than most of you (5 years), please feel free to email me if you wish to get more information. I went off the Fosamax for 10 months without my doctor knowing about it. I started to feel normal during those 10 months and all my pain went away--then, it dawned on me that it probably was the Fosamax that had caused all this horrible pain for 5 years. Recently had a dexascan and it revealed that my bone loss was down 5% from 2 years ago when I had the last scan. My doctor urgently told me that I needed to stay on Fosamax for the rest of my life & was going to add a nasal spray in addition to the Fosamax. I refused the nasal spray but for the heck of it, agreed taking the Fosamax. I didn't want to get osteoporosis and break a hip!! He had me scared! So, after being off of it for 10 months, I went on it again. This week (Nov 9,2005) after being on it for 2 weeks, I am feeling crippled. Joints are swollen once again; I'm in excruciating pain my entire body--especially my shoulders, hands and feet. I am calling my doctor this week & am going to confront him straight on F 54 5 years

1  Prevent osteoporosis I have been taking Fosamax for 5 years during which time I have experienced very sore muscles and joints. My doctor diagnosed this as being Fibromyalgia....not a side affect of the Fosamax. My doctor then prescribed me muscle relaxants for the Fibromyalgia. I had trouble sleeping, sharp pains throughout my body (especially in the morning and at night) and have experienced many nights of insomnia. My doctor then prescribed me Ambien (sleeping aid) to help me sleep. Last fall, I started to have trouble breathing and they took me off Fosamax immediately, uncertain if that was the main cause to the problem. I went through testing to see if my difficulty of breathing was related to my esophagus, and the tests were negative. I then made a decision to stay off the Fosamax, muscle relaxants & Ambien to see if I felt better.....what a major difference!! Experienced no muscle or joint paint, no insomnia and felt like a brand new person. I could actually start jogging again after 5 ye I have suffered for 5 years with taking this medication to no avail. Don't waste your time, money and especially your life by taking this medication.I think the doctors promote these drugs to help the drug companies. They are their priorities. I am going to contact my physician this week and stand up for myself by insisting that I am not going to support drug companies that make me feel worse!! F 54 5 years

1  Osteopenia Very sore muscles & swollen joints; insomnia; dry eyes; rash on leg; stomach bloating & weight gain; loss of energy; tiredness; foot pain/numbness; severe shoulder & neck pain; heart problems I am following-up to my 2 previous posts to this website. I contacted my doctor and told him that I did not think I had Fibromyalgia but that all my muscle pain for the last 5 years was from the Fosamax and he was very surprised of my theory. He checked his hand-held computer gadget which lists side effects of drugs and there was no severe muscle or joint pain listed...the main side effect listed was problems with the esophagus. He gave me the telephone # of Merck to report my side effects. Their telephone # is 1-800-994-2111 if anyone else is interested in filing their reports. The customer service rep at Merck said many of my symptoms were found in their clinical trial studies....I guess the doctors or patients are not being informed of ALL the side effects. F 54 5 years

However, now for the first time I have slight problem with acid reflux. F 59 5 years

1  Osteoporosis Stiffness, joint pain especially painful in hips and when walking, waking up at night by severe pain in joints and bones, acid reflux symptoms, difficulty getting up and moving after sitting. My doctor insisted I keep taking it. I went off it on my own after hearing it loses effectiveness after 5 years. I almost immediately experienced total relief from all the sypmtoms. I can move freely without pain and stiffness. I never knew all my pain was caused by this drug. I also have slept without being awakened with pain. F 72 5 years

1  Osteopenia I can relate to just about everyone else's horror stories. I was diagnosed with Osteopenia 5 years agp and was put on Actonel and then 3 years later changed to Fosamax (the generic form) due to insurance costs. I have a HUGE feeling of a lump in my throat, along with a heavy feeling down through the sternum. I have severe jaw/teeth/ear pain on one side of my face and overall have lost my energy. This has lasted 2 ½ months now. Has anyone else had this huge lump feeling in their throat--how long did it last after stopping the med? I have seen many specialists and had numerous exams, MRI, CT, x-rays, endoscopy, all kinds of blood tests, a vocal chord probe to rule out everything and to find out what was wrong, but no one could find the cause of the pain. The only medication I take is Fosamax, so have been told to stop it. I am convinced Fosamax is the cause. I will NEVER take this med again and have called/e-mailed all my friends to cease using it and to spread the word. My doctor knew nothing of these side effects and said they certainly weren't on the information she had available. This drug is very dangerous for some of us. After using it 4 years on the 35 mg. dosage, my bone density had not improved so my prescription was changed to 70 mg. That's when I began having all these problems. I wonder if I will ever be better. F 60 5 years

5  osteopenia none that I can ascribe to Foxamax Took this for almost 5 years. My bone density stayed about the same at first, but in this last test it is now up quite a bit and in the NORMAL range - hooray - I also excercise a lot and take calcium (citrate and carbonate, plus a regulated amount of vitamin D in winter and a regulated amount of magnesium and a stool softener, no caffeine). I've worked hard at this and am very conscientious (consciencious??). My Dr. believes there is no reduction in bone breakage past the five year mark on this drug. I am going off and happy.  1  Osteporsis I had taken Fosamax for about 4 years with no apparent side effects. I started taking the generic about three months ago and after a month have had lower back, Rt hip and leg pain, especially at night. I could not figure out why it seemed to get better and then would worsen again. Now I realize that the pain increased after taking my weekly dose. I found this web site and stopped taking the drug. My pain is lessening and I can sleep without all the Tylenol and Ibuprophen. I have started a daily walking program in addition to calcium. No more Fosamax for me! F 64 4.5 years

5  Signs of osteopenia None. Fosamax was prescribed because my bone density showed a weakness in one area and was considered osteopenic. My bone density has improved and shows all areas to be in the normal range now. My doctor recommended that I go off the drug for a year because of the possible side effects and then reevaluate a year from now. F 66 4 years

5  osteoporosis occasional mild flu like symptoms Normal bone scan after 2 years. I'm a retired RN. I find most doctors are knowledgeable and well intentioned. The key is to find a doctor you trust. After 40+ years of nursing I depend on the extensive knowledge of a good M.D. to point me in the right direction and to interpret the copious studies out there for me.I find the frequent mistrust of doctors to be very sad as it does get in the way of good medical care for people. I know the many years of study they put in and I would only trust my very valuable health(and life) to a good doctor-not to my own opinion or that of friends or family. After all we have only one life so let us have the most expert person care for us -and that is a competent doctor. Others may (and will) disagree but as I say this is speaking from 40+ years working as a critical care nurse in many large teaching and private hospitals. You owe it to yourself to get the most accurate advice possible. F 69 4 years

4  osteopenia I currently take 35 mg. once a week. I have not had any side effects. Bone density scans show that I am still in the osteopenia stage after 4 years of fosamax. I may need to increase dosage to 70 mg. once a week if my next scan doesn't show improvement. F 52 4 years
