FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Oseoporosis On the evening of the first day I took the drug, I gradually developed severe lower back pain. Also tightness across chest. Aches moving up back into back ribs. Wrists and overall join ache. Slight nausea. Full feeling in chest/diaphram area. This continued with slight easing off each day for 4 days plus. I am a pretty pain tolereant person, but this was nearly as severe as labor pains of child birth without medication (which I have done). My Dr. says not related to the drug, that I must have pulled muscles in my back. Told me to take pain relievers and lay on a heating pad. Husband mentioned my condition to a friend that is also a Dr. and he immediately new it was the Alendronate Sodium and said STOP taking it. The side effects in the pharmacy leaflet mentions "increased or severe bone/joint/muscle pain". I'll say! I will NOT be taking this again! F 56 1 weeks

1  osteoporosis, osteopenia diarrhea, extreme headache, fatigue & exhaustion, leg pain bloating, gas, upper tooth veneer cracked up. Woke up spitting out pieces of my tooth! First time I took this drug I got severe diarrhea. After week 2 the veneer of one of my teeth sheered off. I woke up with crumbled bits of tooth in my mouth. My dentist advised me to STOP taking the drug. After my dental visit, I threw the other 2 pills in the trash. I am now realizing ALL the other symptoms I was having are due to this same medicine: headaches, exhaustion... I'm done with this! F 58 2 weeks

1  To increase bone mass (OP) After only 3 months of once a week doses I started having severe jaw pain. I stopped immediately but the pain in my upper and lower jaw (right side) is daily getting worse. Eating, talking, brushing teeth and impact movements such as walking all exacerbate the pain. Tylenol & ibuprofen make it only slightly bearable. It has negatively impacted my life in a debilitating way. F 47 3 months

1  Ostopenia I posted back on 1/4/2010 with severe pain in legs, hips, chest pain etc. I have now been off the meds for almost a year and still am having pain in back and hips. I also now have a labrial tear that I did not have before taking this med. I know the med. didn't cause the tear but I believe that it happened while have so much pain on the med that I don't even know when it happened. Now that I have been off of the med for a year and still having so much pain, I am wondering how many others are still having this much pain and if anyone has an idea how long this pain will last. I have to go to an Orthopedic dr that specializes in labrial tears now for this problem that probably wouldn't have happened had I not been so unsteady on my feet due to Fosamax generic. F 55

1  supposedly for osteoporsis effected my lower jaw and have still not stopped burping and I stopped the drug 2 years ago take 1000ml calcium and 1000,ml vitamin d a day, Fosamax is poison as far as I'm concerned, it should be taken off the market , had a bone scan recently and my bones are fine don't think I ever had osteoprosis just because I'm small boned I think they missed diagnosed me, and I never had any broken bones I saw dental surgeon when I started having jaw problems because I have dentures and was going to have pins put in and he said he wouldn't touch me because I was on fosamax , and I just stopped taking it right then, my mouth is a lot better still get some sores but is sure has improved since stop taking fosamax, if I could just get rid of the burping that would be wonderful F 69 4 years

I told the pcp that I wanted to go off of it for 3 months. which was ok , I will not go back on it, after finding this site, and reading the comments, I feel I am not going off the deep end. thank you. I think it will take sometime to get out of my system. I now have to deal with tinnitus F 61 8 weeks

1  mild osteopenia I only took one pill and was in extreme muscle and joint pain all over my body...worse pain than gout that I had once. The pain lasted the entire week. Refused to take any more and one year later I am still dealing with muscle and joint aches and pain. Never had these pains before. I also have some generalized muscle weakness. F 68 1 days

1  osteopenia I took one pill at midmorning, by 7:00pm back pain started and continued until I was unable to get out of bed. Never felt such debilitating pain before. It felt like severe cramping along my upper spine. Fortunately, the pain subsided overnight with the help of a generic pain reliever and I was able to continue with my normal routine with just a stiff back the next morning, by afternoon it was all gone. I will NOT under any circumstances take this medication again! My GP will have to come up with a Calcium/Vit D plan for me! F 63 1 days

1  Osteoporosis I started Fosamax in 2003. Shortly afterwards, I developed very stiff painful ankles, knees and joints in fingers. I continued drug for 7 mos. and was diagnosed as developing arthritis. I stopped Fosamax. After some months arthritis symptoms disappeared. About a year later, I started Fosamax again, 'arthritis' reappeared plus I now started experiencing Reflux and stomach problems and was put on a proton pump medication. After 4 months of pain, I again stopped Fosamax and the PPIs. Everything cleared up. But my Dr. pressured me to try osteo drugs again. I did, same results, this time ending up in physio for unexplained swollen Achilles tendons and then ER with what seemed like a heart attack. The heart Dr. said it was really severe reflux, to take PPIs so that I could take also take Fosamax!! It was explained to me that the osteo drug causes somach acid, the acid gets into the blood stream and then into muscles and joints. I stopped taking both osteo drug and PPI and sympto Do your research! Know your self and your situation. Take into consideration other illness you may have. Millions of women are taking these drugs, maybe there is just a subset of us that can't tolerate? FDA is supposed to be coming out with new guidelines Sept 2011. I think they are just looking at jaw and femur breaks, not muscle/joint pain. F 71 3 years

1  osteopenia I started with itchy red spots on my lower stomach, feeling terrible, very tired.Acid relux really was acting up, and my stomach. Seen my Dr. twice and Nurse practitioner twice, they ran all kinds of blood test. I have gerd and take meds for that, but it was getting really bad, calves of legs ache, bloated stomach, even the bottom of my feet burn, I just all over feeling TERRIBLE. Well 2 weeks ago back to Dr. she said she really had no idea what was going on, they had ran many kinds of test and nothing was showing up. As we were talking again I mention how my acid reflux was so bad. A light came on, she said just a minute, she was going through my file, she said it's the Fosamax, stop it now. Well I can say I'm a little better, but still so tired, acid reflux is a little better, really don't even feel like eating, I just feel so sad. So words to you,DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE. It's not worth your life. F 63 2 months

3  Osteopenia It has been 8 days since my last dose of generic Fosamax and my multiple pains are 85% improved...could this be coincidence..maybe I was going to get better or was it the Fosamax? I won't know unless I begin therapy again after a few weeks...my doctor would only laugh at me if I approached him/her with this.... F 65 10 years

2  Osteoporosis I feel so sad and no energy. I have just taken one dose and don't know if this is a side effect. Also don't know if someone continues taking this drug if the body adjusts and this side effect goes away. Also had reflux in the middle of the night which I almost never, ever have. Also had a knot in my calf muscle. Just don't know if I should keep going or stop now. I obviously have to at least experience a whole week, as it is a weekly medication. F 53 2 days

3  Osteopenia Severe knee pain/inflammation, wrist and finger pain, hip pain - feels mostly like muscle pain. Knee xrays totally negative,no arthritis. Took brand name Fosamax first several years of treatment with improvement in bone density scans. Last several months have been using generic brand. Pain came on suddenly 1 month ago and is not improving much. I am going to stop Fosamax therapy and see if I improve. I'm happy to find out this COULD be a side effect and causing my pain.  2  osteopenia the osteoporosis I began treatment after being diagnosed with osteoporosis, gained a small amount of bone density and was reevaluated as having osteopenia. Then during/after menopause I regressed to having osteoporosis. I stopped taking Fosamax 18 months ago and had my first DEXA scan in 18 months this past May. I lost an additional 8% bone density in my spine - T score is now -3.1. Either the medication didn't help much or not at all. Moreover, almost 2 years ago I developed persistent tinnitus in my right ear and episodic tinnitus in my left. My teeth, orthodontically corrected when I was a teenager, shifted, I developed TMJ and arthritis of the jaw. My teeth have been for the most part, straightened with invisilign and kept in place and to prevent further damage, with a nightguard. I can only assume these problems are related to Fosamax. My doctors want me on a osteoporosis medication ASAP but they all have side effects and frighten me, particularly the infusion drugs. I have always exercised daily, F 55 8 years

1  1 Year I remember the first time I took Fosamax I was standing in the shower when an intense flushing wave started in my head and flowed through my entire body. My vision went dark and I experienced tunnel vision. I almost fainted. My heart began a rapid pounding that subsided around 10 min later. My doctor insisted that Fosamax did not cause heart palpitatons. He said that he did the research. He asked me if I wanted to be a jelly fish after menapause and insisted that I remain on Fosamax. I reluctantly took it for the next year. Three years ago I went to my current doctor who does an EKG on all new patients. My EKG showed that I had an arrythmia. He ran a Cardiolite and diagnosed me as false positive since there were no other symptoms. Last month, I started having intense arrythmias. They have changed my life. I've cut out all caffine. I can't have even a glass of wine. Meals are almost terrifing to me. When I eat some foods, my heart goes racing and it can last all night long. I have an ap F 56 360 days
