FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  stress fx in neck of femur x 2 I hadn't had a lot of side effects until recently, my muscles ache a lot in my lower extremities especially. I had been taking calcium supplements much better and have not been good in the last few months. I have had to stretch constantly or I hurt bad and it seems to be getting worse and worse and in more muscles. I don't know if it is from my Fosamax and if the lack of not taking extra calcium is making my symptoms worse. I just don't know if it is worth the risks. F 42 2 years

1  Osteoporosis Constant leg pain ranging from a dull ache to horrible throbbing pain that made it difficult to walk, sleep or do much of anything. Pain was concentrated aroundright knee: Behind it, on the side, and sometimes shooting up the front of my thigh. How am I supposed to do weight bearing exercise and strength training when I can barely walk? F 60 4 months

I have been off the drug (generic) for 2 weeks now and am still having symptoms. Wondering when the pain will go away. Do not take this drug. Vitamin D and Calcium are better. M 32 2 months

1  diagnosed with "osteopenia" Severe joint, muscle and bone pain in my left hip, thigh, leg and buttocks within 48 hours. Walking very painful and began limping like a very old woman. Could not sleep on my left side because of the pain. Shooting pain in my lower legs woke me up during the night. Has been 3 weeks since my first and last dose and still have pain, though not as severe. Very worried there will be some residual effects from one dose and pain may never go away completely. Caution everyone not to take even one dose of this without receiving a 2nd opinion. Many doctors have recommended NEVER taking Fosamax or a similar drug. Physicians need to warn patients of potential side effects (not just those appearing with medicine) so patient can make an informed decision whether to risk taking this drug (poison!). FDA should remove this drug from the market. F 71 1 days

1  osteoporosis Fosamax started to swell my aunts ankles, the swelling then went all the way up to her knees (3 plus pitting edema) this was 2 months into taking the medicine. The doctor told her that this could be normal so she continued with the Fosamax and elevated her legs, stayed hydrated and started Lasix. Nothing changed in her legs, still swelling she developed an orange tint to the color of her skin and started having black tarry profusely bloody stools, then she started throwing up very very large amounts of blood. She had gotten Hepatitis c, esophageal varices, congestive heart failure, and cirrhosis from this. It was to late to reverse the damage at 7-8 weeks after starting the medicine. She had NO underlying health conditions and was on NO other medications.. Pure, Plain, and simple Fosamax KILLED my aunt!!! This death drug needs to be pulled from the shelves.  4  Osteoporosis/hyperparathyroidism No side affects. Feel good on it. I hope everyone with osteoporosis asks their doc to do a calcium and parathyroid blood test (done at the same time) to determine whether their osteoporosis is caused by hyperparathyroidism. This is usually caused by ae small not cancerous growth on the parathyroid (not thyroid) gland. When removed , the osteoporosis is usually reversed. F 73 4 months

3  Osteoarthritis So far no side effects. The first week I start taking the Fosamax I started to feel less pain then I started to do some brisk walking for less than an hour and realize all the stiffness in my joints was gone. Now I will just feel like 1% of stiffness now and then. I take the medication the right way it should be taken along with vitamin D & Calcium and my other regular vitamins including herbal liquid supp. In the morning when I take my first few steps I will be in pain for like a minute then it will go away. Not trying to visit my dentist no time soon just proper oral hygiene and I should be fine. I will update on my progression. F 36 3 weeks

3  Osteoporosis/hyperparathyroidism Mild flu like symptoms (tired, chills) I believe everyone diagnosed with osteopenia/osteoporosis should ask their dr to do calcium and parathyroid test on their blood. See the website www.parathyroid.com. Hyperparathyroidism (not thyroid) can cause osteoporosis, but is somewhat reversible after a simple operation to remove the dysfunctional parathyroid gland. parathyroid.com website explains it clearly and how it causes osteoporosis in some people.  1  Osteoperosis diarrhea and stomach problems I took Fosamax and it's generic for a period of ten years. I have had stomach problems on and off for many of those years. I stopped taking after discussing it with my oral surgeon 4 and a half months ago. I never thought it was causing my stomach problems, but they are starting to subside now. I don't think I will ever take it again. I will cope with post menopausal issues with vitamins for now on. F 57 10 years

1  Osteoporosis I took my first dose of Generic Fosamax (Aldendronate 70 mg) at 8am on February 15. I felt a little light-headed that morning but ignored it. The following day I felt like I had been in a car accident- every bone and joint hurt severely. A week later I still felt a lot of pain and was taking Ibuprofen around the clock. I called my doctor who told me to stop the pill and wait two weeks and try again. Well, I took one tablet yesterday and today everything hurts worse again. No more for me. The pain has been constant since my first pill. F 64 2 weeks

1  bone density -- osteoporosis I took the first pill on a Friday morning -- 70 mg of Alendronate Sodium (generic Fosamax). On Saturday I began experiencing severe lower back pain. It was the worse back pain I have ever experienced. I could hardly get up from a sitting position. I have a high pain threshold, but this brought me to my knees and had me in tears. On Sunday I still had back pain with occasional back spasms. I am praying the pain goes away by the end of the week. I will not be taking this medicine again. The side effects after one dose are horrible -- I can only imagine what would happen if I continued taking Fosamax or any generic version. F 58 1 days

1  bone density A-Fib I used to have perfect health until I started on the Fosamax. Then I was diagnosed with A-Fib 3 years ago and have been going down hill ever since. I'm scheduled to see an electrophysicist to have my heart cauterized since medications have not worked. Just stopped the Fosamax today. Hopefully I'll get my life back. F 77 4 years

1  Dr recommend Was given this med over fives years ago. From the beginning I had severe GI problems. I stopped the meds after a couple of months. I have persistant pain and numbness in arms, hands, legs and feet. I have been to numerous doctors and have been out of work for a year now. No relief in sight. I can't get any of the doctors to even admit that this drug may have caused my problems. I'm happy to know I'm not the only one with these problems. I just wish someone would find a cure so I can get back to living. F 53 2 months

1  osteoporosis I felt like I had been hit with a baseball bat by my left hip,it hurt so bad. I was limping from the pain. Next, my right thigh started feeling the same type of pain. Then the left side of my jaw started hurting so I just quit taking it. There's no way I'm going to have my jawbone eaten away or have my femur fracture. Having the above side effects made me think it could be precisely the beginning of those two horrible conditions. F 56 8 months
