FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  To prevent osteoporosis Problems with my esophagus and my stomach, pain in my chest. I have had reflux disease for the last 6 months. I have talked with other people who have had the same problem after taking Fosamax, it should be out of the market. F 70 15 months

1  osteoporosis Joint pains and severe swelling in my hands. BEWARE of this drug if you are taking anti-inflammatory drugs. I have chronic tendinitis in my hands and wrists. Anti-inflamatory drugs normally do a fair job of keeping the swelling under control. Swelling causes severe pain and stiffness in my fingers and wrist joints. Two weeks after starting the Fosamax I noticed more swelling and pain than normal for my condition. Not linking the swelling to the Fosamax drug, I continued taking it. After three months I could not use my hands to even dress myself without crying from the pain. My Doctor said it couldn't have any connection and to keep taking the Fosamax. I decided to stop taking it and now after two weeks the swelling is responding to my anti-inflammatory drug again. F 58 3 months

1  Osteopenia Stiffness, aches & pains in all joints. Slight swelling. Started in my hands, really bad. I thought I was getting arthritis, but then I realized every joint in my body was stiff and achy, including my feet! When I move, I can hear the joints crack and pop. I had not connected it to fosamax, but decided to check the brochure for side effects and noticed that this condition was one of the side effects, though not the main one advertised. I have only been off the drug for one week. Notice slight improvement. Am hoping it will get better the longer I am off of it. F 57 4 months

4  osteopenia I currently take 35 mg. once a week. I have not had any side effects. Bone density scans show that I am still in the osteopenia stage after 4 years of fosamax. I may need to increase dosage to 70 mg. once a week if my next scan doesn't show improvement. F 52 4 years

3  Small loss of bone Noticed right away my Sciatic pain increased measureably to the point I wanted to cry! I kept taking other pain killers and I also had 3 shots in my back for pain! Although the shots helped pain did not completely go away. I ran out of it for a few days once and noticed my pain lessened quite a lot! Then I started taking the once a week pill. The pain came back with a vengence! I could hardly move at night to the point I didn't want to get out of bed to go to the bathroom because I knew when I got back into bed I would be in excruciating pain! Not that laying in bed helped the pain. Trying to go back to sleep with the pain was not easy. Now my doctor is retiring and I ran out of the pills and to be honest I DON'T want to take them again! For the first time in a long while I can go to and get out of bed without severe pain! I wouldn't recommend it if you have a sciatic nerve problem! I feel SO MUCH better now and I can move around with little pain, although the sciatic pain is by no means gone it SURE is livable now! Oh yes, I too also have a problem with my ankles cracking and feeling stiff in both my feet and hands. F 59 3 years

2  bone density problems After taking it for 3 months my fingers, middle finger on each hand started hurting. I stopped for 2 weeks and it went away. I had never had any pain in my hands or other joints other than my hip when I drive. Now after taking it for 3 more months the joints in my thumbs, all of them are hurting. I have again stopped for a week and they are getting better. I don't know if the fosamax has helped with the bone density problem; however, if I cannot find studies that address the problem, I will take my chances with my bones as I had no pain before.I am currently on no other medication-- and according to the study that recently came out they do not know if the drug actually prevents fractures---why would it be prescribed if that is true?  1  osteopenia I was not connecting the joint pain and spinal pain which has been gradually increasing to Fosamax until this morning I could hardly get out of bed for all the aching and decided to do a search for side effects on this drug. I have been seeing a chiropractor and it helps while I go somewhat but never goes away completely. I am on Fosamax for a year and a half but after reading user comments I am definitely stopping this drug. I was healthy except for bone loss and take NO other medications. I am so happy I found your web site!!!! I am going to continue to readup on latest advances, and take natural vitamins and minerals. I am just happy to know that my instincts about my own health are correct. F 66 1 days
