FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Osteoporosis Severe joint and muscle pain in knees. Knees feel swollen inside. My knees hurt so bad they felt like they broken. I used to walk everyday, now I'm lucky if I can get to the restroom. Lots of pain. Very bad drug. Doctor's say it's not the fosamax and must be something else. They need to take this drug themselves to understand what we are going through. Will these symptoms ever go away? They need to ban this drug. F 70 3 months

1  osteoporosis I took my first dose yesterday morning at about 7 AM. Morning was okay but by about 4 PM I had diarrhea. By evening I had to vomit. I vomited again two more times during the night. I had a headache and vertigo. Just very uncomfortable all night. I was not able to eat breakfast today but did manage to eat lunch. And now I'm having nausea and stomach pain again. I plan to stop this drug. Very surprising because my digestion is usually very good - no heartburn or acid reflux at all. And I can't remember any bad reactions to other drugs. I have no idea why I reacted so badly to this drug. F 62 1 days

2  Osteopenia Since I've only been taking it 2 weeks I hesitate to say all this is from fosomax but I felt fine before - now I'm extremely tired all the time, low back ache, pain at base of neck, severe pain in thumb joint. I walk and workout just about everyday and now I don't feel like doing anything it seems too hard It has been recalled so many times and I tried to ask doc about its efficacy and safety but was told try it then quit if side effects. Drug business is sketchy F 63 2 weeks

1  Osteopenia First day took at 9 am. Stomach cramps and gas pain started. Felt ok when I went to bed. Woke up at 330 am wide awake. Bad neck pain. Finally went back to sleep woke up felt a bit nauseated and had stomach cramps, bad gas. Went to bathroom a couple times. Terrible fatigue in the afternoon I had to lay down never had it this bad before. I wish I would have read these reviews before I took the pill. I will not take this medicine again. I'm going to see my doctor and go with something else. F 65 1 days

1  osteoporosis Severe back pain and severe chest pain in my rib cage. Could not sit in chair or lie down in bed. Dr. said I might be having heart attack. I told her it was not a heart attack, but she insisted I go to hospital. It was not a heart attack. Dr. didn't believe me, said she never in 20 years heard anything like side effects I was experiencing. Please read all the comments on this page. It's been 4 days, and I still have back and chest pain - hoping it will eventually go away. No medication helps relieve pain. Do not listen to your doctor about your side effects not being attributed to Fosomax - it definitely is, and it only took one small pill on one day. F 80 1 days

1  Osteopenia First week diarrhea commencing 2nd day after 1st dose. Second week ongoing diarrhea, lack of appetite and nausea severely impacting the quality of my life. Now have flu like symptoms, chills and fatigue. I’ll be meeting with my clinic on call physician ASAP tomorrow and refuse to take the 3rd dose of this vile medication. I’ve benefited from the personal experiences and less medicalized suggestions from other reviewers. I intend to explore Vitamin D, K, fish oil and exercise alternatives. Sadly $ out the window.  1  Osteoporosis After taking this drug for 3 years, I began having hip, knee and leg pain. I stopped taking fosamax for 4 weeks and all pain disappeared. My PCP encouraged me to try again. After 2 doses, I had the worst pain all over my body I've ever had in my life. After 3 months the pain is subsiding (I now am taking an antinfiammatory drug prescribed by an orthopedic dr ). I will never take this drug again and tell everyone I know to stay away from it. 72 3 years

1  Osteoporosis Took as directed as I have had acid reflux for years. Drank plenty of water . The Dr also prescribed this without any discussion about Calcium and Vit D supplementation and or possible side effects . Took my first weekly dose with much trepidation. By the afternoon I felt slightly sluggish and had some dizziness. By evening I had a slight rash on arms and face and felt like I was coming down with the flu as I was achy. The following morning woke up stiff all over and didn't even feel like going for a walk at all. Sore especially in my arms and fingers. Generally feel sore all over even my heels and finger joints. I will not take this a second time! Starting to do heavy research on other ways to help with my condition other than these horrible medications! F 62 1 days

2  Osteoporosis Pain and swelling in hand at thumb joint. Water retention in legs and abdomen. I quit after 5 weeks after reading on here and trying to decide. A week after quitting, I have had random neck and back pain. I did not have this in the past. I had no pain before being put on Fosomax. I am hoping natural things such as D3, K2, calcium, exercise, etc...are going to be enough...or at least until they find better drugs. F 58 5 weeks

1  Osteoporosis Developed hacking tickle cough, all day, and nights. Coughing so bad tears would roll down my cheeks, nose totally plugged. Felt like a crumb of toast stuck in right or left side of throat. Kept coughing until clear. Absolutely miserable. I took drug every Monday. Sunday nights I began to realize coughing had diminished a bit, But then it was Monday again and time for weekly dose. I connected the dots F 76 3 years

1  Moderate osteoporosis spine Terrible burning of esophagus indigestion burping , twitching of muscle below the eye .. upper cheek. Took 7 weeks for the indigestion to stop. We put too much faith in doctors for our health. Drugs are not the answer. Pharma will always down play side effects. Too big an industry to challenge. We need to empower ourselves with knowledge and make informed decisions for our body. Apparently if you do break a bone while on fosomax the healing process takes 3 times as long ! What does that tell you. Sure your bone scan shows thicker bones but the quality and integrity of the bone is very compromised. One dose never again ! F 65 1 days
