FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  Osteoporosis none to my knowledge. I never felt any different, other than general aches and pains of growing old, and I believe all the many complaints of the people who responded with opinions of what they THINK resulted by taking Fosamax could be results of many, many other problems. I recently had a bone density exam and while it showed more deterioation than my test 10 years ago, my doctor said it did not show as much as is normal for that number of years, so it must be doing some amount of good.  1  Osteoporosis Dreadful pain in hip, tummy and bowel problems exacerbated, awful taste in mouth which led to loss of appetite, build up of phlegm like problem and cough and loss of sleep pattern. my mother started Osteomel on Oct 4th 2014. We stopped it after second dose. Her health went into immediate decline. It appears she was ingesting some food and liquids from the little she was eating. The phlegm and cough led to a lung infection and she died of pneumonia on November 17th. She lost her swallow in her final days and the medics admitted her gastric tract was damaged. I wish we had never heard of this drug. F 86 2 weeks

1  Osteoporosis from a cancer pill No side effects first day. Next day terrible backache down my spine. After that I had pains in my ribs, pains in my abdomen, nausea, weakness and pains in all of my joints, headache. This is a terrible medication. I felt good when I took it but after 3 days I felt like a cripple. Pains everywhere - wrists, shoulders, arms. I could barely get up out of a chair or in and out of bed. Unable to leave the house for 4 days because of how terrible I felt. I still have aches all over my body and can't stand for very long. I'm weak and feel like my legs won't hold me. I have been in good health and led a very active lifestyle. I'm hoping I'll get back to that again. F 84 1 days

2  osteopenia osteonecrosis of the jaw, atrial fibrillation My mother took fosamax for 13 years with improved density tests and no problems until a small sore in her mouth did not heal. This progressed to something sharp at the site and she went to the dentist. He removed a 1/4" piece of bone and said in 25 yrs. of practice he had never seen anything like it. My mom had her own teeth and had no extractions. She promptly stopped fosamax in 2006. She had a flare up of the osteonecrosis and her oral surgeon prescribed an antibiotic which cleared up the infection. However, she developed a rash and was told she could not take that antibiotic again. In January 2008 a doctor prescribed prednisone for a rash (contraindicated with a dx.of osteonecrosis, but she did not know) Within 3 wks. her jaw swelled and was sore to the touch. She was put on an antibiotic then the pain spread to her throat and another antibiotic was added. She died 1 week later following a seizure (side effect of the strong antibiotics), and a fatal arrythemia. She did have a bad fall in April of 2007 and nothing broke. She went on Fosamax prior to it being approved. She got the drug for free and never had a problem until years later. They had recommended I take it at age 44. My own dentist has a patient in her 50's very disfigured after developing ONJ after receiving implants and having been on fosamax. The oral surgeon said this is just the tip of the iceberg because so many are taking Fosamax at such young ages. F 83 13 years

1  osteoporosis in pelvis and lower ba took only one but the pain started on the same day as a very uncomfortable pain in my right buttock, the next day it was so bad i couldn't shower myself and had to lie down, as the pain increased in intensity and is still a nightmare one and a half weeks later-it even feels like it has moved closer to my spine-i am now on a very strong pain med but it has only dulled the pain-i am in despair, how long will it take to get this drug out of my system? i am 83. what power the drug companies hold over the gps /considering that fosamax is worth billions each year/we are the guinea pigs for research/litigation on fosamax is peanuts compared to profit margins.  1  Osteoporosis Dizzy spells, clammy, pale, muscle pain, joint pain, loss of vision in right eye, fatigue, constipation, stiffness, blurred vision in both eyes and feel older than ever before. I have been taking Fosamax for 4 years. I was not aware of the side effects of Fosamax until recently. I read about the side effects in a news article. I am a very healthy person who takes great care of my body. I was active and able to do most actitivies before I began Fosamax. I have seen more doctors now from taking Fosamax in the past year and a half and run more tests than I have ever had before even for my age. All tests come back negative, not being able to find any answers to the cause of my problems. When I read the article and the doctors could give me no answer to these newly developed problems, I realized that Fosamax could be the cause of it all. I hope this comment makes people become more aware of how dangerous Fosamax can and could be if taken. F 83 4 years

1  Bone Density After several years of taking fosomax, my aunt (who was otherwise quite healthy, comes from great genetic stock) is dying from myelodysplastic syndrome - when your bone marrow stops doing its job... I know in my heart it was caused by Fosomax. Fosomax targets the bones and there are no long term studies regarding prolonged use of Fosomax and its impact on blood marrow. She's been on it for many years but otherwise healthy. Merck, if you are reading this....you're going down. F 83 7 years

1  osteoporosis due to age Weakness in one leg, stability problems, difficulty in getting in and out of cars, motor coordination problems such as handling a fork, blurred vision and difficult night vision, extreme fatigue and disorientation at times. Symptoms started almost immediately and my condition continued to deteriorate. Doctors declared it was due to old age. Now need a cane to walk with due to weakness in one leg. After reading the comments on the website stopped taking the medicine after 4 months and hope for improvement. F 80 120 days

1  osteoporosis My mother was taking fosamax from 1995 until 2005 for osteoporosis. I believe she was part of a clinical trial. Her osteoporosis improved. However, her medical records say she was barely tolerating the drug and that she had severe esophogeal ulcerations, nausea, jaw bone loss and vertigo from the inner ear. She was told to continue the drug. October 2005, she began to have trouble swallowing, she was initially told it was anxiety, but was then diagnosed with Esophogeal cancer and died nine months later in July 2006, she was 80 years old. I have put this comment in for my mother, but have been diagnosed with osteopenia myself. I will not take fosamax if it progresses on to osteoporosis because I don't want to get esophogeal cancer like my mother. That was an experience too horrible for words. I am consoling myself that my grandmother was a skinny thing like me but never broke a bone in her 86 years. F 80 10 years

1  Osteoporosis Severe muscle spasms of the back. Very tired and lethargic. My mother was given fosamax for bone loss. She had sarcoma (cancer) that was in her lungs, with the largest tumor being 4 mm as of early November CT Scan. Some of the tumor had shrunk and all were very slow growing for the previous 18 months. After the back spasms, mom was hospitalized for pneumonia. Turned out to be tumor growth. Within 3 weeks of her hospitalization in January, she was dead. The tumors that were very slow growing for a year and a half grew enough to take over her lung and kill her - all within 2 months of taking the fosamx and having the back spasms. FDA says the drug shouldn't be given to anyone who has cancer or has had radiation or chemo. Mom had cancer and radiation... F 80 2 months

1  osteoporosis Severe back pain and severe chest pain in my rib cage. Could not sit in chair or lie down in bed. Dr. said I might be having heart attack. I told her it was not a heart attack, but she insisted I go to hospital. It was not a heart attack. Dr. didn't believe me, said she never in 20 years heard anything like side effects I was experiencing. Please read all the comments on this page. It's been 4 days, and I still have back and chest pain - hoping it will eventually go away. No medication helps relieve pain. Do not listen to your doctor about your side effects not being attributed to Fosomax - it definitely is, and it only took one small pill on one day. F 80 1 days
