OXYCONTIN  (OXYCODONE HYDROCHLORIDE):  This medication is used to help relieve severe ongoing pain (such as due to cancer). Oxycodone belongs to a class of drugs known as opioid (narcotic) analgesics. It works in the brain to change how your body feels and responds to pain. The higher strengths of this drug (more than 40 milligrams per tablet) should be used only if you have been regularly taking moderate to large amounts of an opioid pain medication. These strengths may cause overdose (even death) if taken by a person who has not been regularly taking opioids. Do not use the extended-release form of oxycodone to relieve pain that is mild or that will go away in a few days. This medication is not for occasional ("as needed") use.    (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Chronic Pain When I first started taking it, it gave me horrible headaches but really helped with managing my pain. When my alarm clock went off if the morning to get up for work, I would have a pill sitting on my night stand and take it before getting out of bed. After about 30 minutes, I was not only pain free but had awesome euphoria! I was ready to tackle the day and simply put, felt great! About 2 years ago, my pain management doc lost his license to prescribe opiates. I went thru hell! I was suddenly cut completely off and unable to find another prescribing doc. I made it thru the withdrawals however and after about a week, I was doing ok but the pain came back with a vengeance! I UNFORTUNATELY found another pain management doc willing to prescribe and put me back on maintenance. I don't know if anyone else has experienced the same as myself but I would argue with anybody that within the past 2 years, they are simply not the same! The ingredients can't be the same as before and the color even changed. I am totally aware that you build up a tolerance to this devils pill but I also know the pharmaceutical companies have done something to change the effects of them.. I feel this medication has "taken my life" from me! I stay horribly depressed, constant panic attacks, no energy at all and zero motivation. I just want to stay in bed all the time but unable to rest! I feel that my body is shutting down and deteriorating very quickly. I could go on and on endlessly about this h REFUSE TO TAKE IT UNLESS YOU HAVE NO OTHER OPTIONS AND ONLY FOR A VERY SHORT PERIOD OF TIME! Doctors just don't tell you the road you're headed down!  1  ulnar nerve compression from burns Severe constipation, dry mouth leading to 7 cavities in front upper teeth and only had 4 cavities total prior in my 56 yrs alive. Tummy pain daily, takes 2+ hrs for any pain relief, yet stops working after 4hrs. Sweats, especially at night soaking pjs and dripping from hair (unsure if due to withdrawal as these occur 12 hrs after last daily dose). Have counted 11 pills in toilet, in their entirety, and could read OP on some of them. A few rats given these on a 2 week trial is not sufficient info to determine the safety of Oxy OPs. Anti-freeze and rubber are not meant for consumption, regardless of amount. The OC's worked miraculously great for pain and since I had been on them for only 2 mos., I didn't expect the withdrawals and horrible side-effects when switched to the reformulated OP version. The daily withdrawals in between dosages and no longer being able to have a bowel movement without using Fleet, and having your teeth rot is NOT worth the minute pain relief. I was on the OC version a couple months prior to reformulation. The OPs do NOT work a fraction as well as the OCs did. Never experienced euphoria, but am in deep depression and constant pain. Need to switch meds due to adverse side effects but am allergic to morphine and the Fentynal patches so am at a loss as to what to try next. I have empathy for addicts (especially their loved ones), however, it is UNFAIR that I'm paying the consequences for their choices and now my Dr is fearful of prescribing opiates and weaning me off these OPs with no idea what to replace them with. The fraud related to Purdue and some government officials around Oxycontin makes me fearful that we don't yet know the entirety of potential harm that this drug can do, but no doubt the makers are well aware, just as they knew that it was NOT a 12 hr analgesic, but 6 to 8 hours pain relief at best. When they can send men to the moon, seems ridiculous that there isn't an effective drug to provide complete pain relief or to cure cancers. There needs to be an option that prevents abuse, but allows the analgesics to be released from the Oxy. If you've not yet tried Oxycontin as of March 2017, DON'T start on it! F 56 6 years

1  cervical spondlythesis, DDD, Lumbar I was on 20mg twice a day and it felt like I had no pain control, only felt sick, so doc upped it, and these abdominal cramps are horrible! It doesn't help pain at all! I feel sick and have to take breakthrough med to get any relief! I am angry that the docs are prescribing this new toxic plastic untested crap to us with real pain!! Especially when they are able to use the old one! Its rediculous that we all have to be punished and grouped together be ause of the abuse problem! And big pharma of course is right there to profit, with another mess! F 52 10 days

1  Lumbar Microdiscectomy The side effects were worse than the pain... Constipation, diarrhea, flu like symptoms, headaches so bad my eyes hurt, itchy skin, numb arms... I hope to never go on it again and I don't see how anyone could get addicted to it! It is awful! I took 80 mg for 2 days, then 60 for 1, 40 for 1, 20mg for 1, and 10mg for 1... I cannot believe I had withdrawls just from that... Its brutal stuff, don't take it lightly!!!! F 25 6 days

1  Back surgery I had minor constipation. The reason I am giving such a low score is the withdrawals a person will go through when quitting. You think you hurt now? The pain will be 100xs as bad. You will want to die. Seriously, don't ever take this medication unless you have a terminal illness. F 45 6 months

1  Herniated disc, ddd, surgery These pills improved my mood and gave me energy which in turn made me not care that I still had back pain! I never once took more than prescribed dose. If anything I took less than prescribed because I didnt want to end up a drug addict....but I did anyway! I'm extremely strong willed and healthy. I'm a runner, which probably hurt my back even more running with a herniated disc but that's how determined of a person I am. These pills are impossible not to become dependant upon. Your body physically starts to need it to function! I only recommend this drug to hospice pts who are going to die while still on it. I am 4 days clean and it's been hell!!! Cold chills, sweaty, severe depression, extreme fatigue!!! I'd choose the back pain if I could go back in time! I chose to stop taking it due to successful back surgery one month ago. My dr is very careless in prescribing this drug. It's legal heroine! Avoid unless terminal! F 36 7 months

1  Spinal disc degeneration Update 5/24/2012: I changed the rating for this medication to 1, as I now need to use 8 Norco 10/325 MG per day for pain. I also use Kenalog-40, which helps with the inflammation caused by the damage to my spine. Oxycontin used to work great, but when the formula was changed, it effectively became useless, along with being extremely expensive. M 53 4 years

1  Fibro, Arthritis Euphoria, severe constipation, dopey feeling, nodding, extremely dilated pupils no sex drive This drug is evil! I do not know how they can even prescribe this! Taken for a year, and switched doctors and was immediatley not given any scripts (Was getting a script for the month) It turned me into a drug seeker, because I was so sick from withdrawals. They are horrible. It is the WORST feeling you will ever go through. I WOULD RATHER GIVE BIRTH 20X A WEEK THEN HAVE WITHDRAWALS. I've withdrawaled longer than a week. You get restless muscles you want to crawl out of your skin, anorexia, you get goosebumps, diarea, vommiting, hot and cold flashes, just feel like you have a flu. I would tell anybody if they have arthritis or fibro use anti inflamatorys. DO NOT USE NARCOTICS. YOU ARE IN FOR HELL IF YOU DO. I had to go to a suboxone clinic, and wean myself off. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. IT IS HELL, and if you abuse it your face starts to change after years of abuse. Not mine, but I know many people who abuse the medication and they look horrible F 29 1.5 years
