| 1 | Migraine headache | I began taking Topamax extended release for migraines. I have experienced severe weakness over all and nerve pain in my arms, shoulder blade on the left, I'm left handed. Also, have difficulty standing and it hurts to rise from seated position. I'm experiencing nerve pain and neuropathy in my legs and feet. Very fatigued and mental fog. I was taking Savella for fibromyalgia and Sjogrens but not sure why adding Topamax has been so debilitating. | This drug is dangerous but was presented differently to me. | F | 56 | 35 days 50 mg | 6/20/2018 | 5 | migraine prevention | Initially I had numbness to my lips and strange areas like my heels and different parts of arms and hands. I had a little trouble finding words, but very gradually increased my dose and the side effects disappeared within a month. | I had migraines five days a week which were crippling before Topamax. I started on 25 mg once a day and worked my way up to 200mg twice a day. In addition to supplements, I now have migraines maybe twice a month, which are easily controlled with Imitrex and Fioricet. I never could have said that before. Very glad to get this med because all of the other meds had so many crippling side effects. It is a great mood stabilizer without the weight gain that is common in this type of med. I was able to halt the rapid personality changes from all of the other meds we were testing to find a good fit. This drug was an add-on to another drug that caused severe akathesia (sp?). The other drug was discontinued and topamax came out the mild winner. I had wonderful relief from my migraines for a long time w/ Topamax- now I get a few a month. BUT DO NOT take this medicine!! Try something else.PLEASE!! I can't get off it! I have tried and tried to quit. It has the worst withdrawals imaginable! I am not exaggerating. You will sweat like you are in the Sahara desert for weeks on end and your migraines will return with a vengeance. You will have the worst headaches of your life. I put up with the migraines and they eventually passed, but the sweating lasted for 6 weeks- I was embarrassed to go out in public- sweat was pouring down my face, pooling under my breasts, running down my legs- 6 weeks after I slowly tapered off this medicine. Nothing has ever affected me like this. I think this medicine is dangerous. My regular doctor doesn't prescribe it either- had to get it from a neurologist. Some days if I am feeling great and am very busy and active then I am very tired the next day so I have to pace myself on this drug. The wosre side effect is lack of sweating in the heat so again, have to pace myself. Unfortunately no weight loss. | Without this I could lose my vision so I have learned to live with it. I only experience tingling in the hands (generally the fingers) during temperature changes (coming inside/going outside, cold water/hot water, etc). I only experienced tingling of feet in the first few months of taking the medication. I have occasional emotional sensitivity and experienced significant emotional instability during the first month of taking the medication. Fatigue is noted with use of this medication and I have to take my dosage in the evening. I have also experienced an increased thirst as well as stress and clenching of the jaw structure. I had been taking topamax (25mg in the morning and 25mg at night) for about three months for migraine prevention until four days ago. When I first began taking it I realized that I had a few side effects that were easy to find online. These included dizziness, tingling in the hands, feet, and face, as well as a change in the taste of coke (flat and nasty). I also noticed that the effects of drinking alcohol were exacerbated and led to a migraine each time. But besides those two migraines from drinking I did not have any other migraines, which was the only pro about taking this medication. About a month ago things got really bad for me. I began having sever pain in my upper abdomen on the left side where my stomach is. I also could not eat much since eating made the pain worse. This led to a huge decrease in weight (yay?) but also a trip to the emergency room since I knew something was wrong. Side effects are minimal--some grogginess, definite loss of appetite, carbonated drinks taste strange. | This has been a miracle drug for me. Tapering up on it probably helped minimize the side effects. I developed ice pick headaches (aka primary stabbing headaches) very suddenly. After an MRI and MRA to check for underlying conditions, I was diagnosed with this condition--apparently it's something that can happen to people in middle age who have a history of migraines. My migraines had been very manageable--no more than a one or two a year--and very treatable. I just dealt with them. But then I began suffering from these very intense, short lasting, unpredictable, and debilitating ice pick headaches. I couldn't work, and they began to appear 6-8 times a day, 4-5 times a week. If you suffer from these headaches, you know that you would be willing to suffer some mild grogginess in order to prevent the development of the headaches. The headaches stopped after the first dose. everyone has to make the best decision based on the information from their their doctors, but for me this drug has given me my life back. The headaches, nausea and muscle cramps I can handle , but the 24 hour a day sweat pouring down my face and body is unbearable. It makes it impossible to go out in public without being embarrassed and the laundry piles up all day long. It is soooo horrible. This drug should not be manufactured it is poison!! Never had gastrointestinal problems. Started bleeding on the fourth day from my anus and my urine turned pink. Doctors did tests, scans and said they needed to check me for cancer. I told ER I had started Topomax and one of the doctors said it is rare but you can bleed out from it. We stopped the Topomax and within 48 hours in hospital, the bleeding stopped and my urine was clear. I had a scope and all was clear. This drug is dangerous. I lost 15kg in a month AFTER stopping it as I could not eat. I was placed on a IV for 7 days with fluid. Specialists put it a down to Topomax.
