GLUCOPHAGE  (METFORMIN HYDROCHLORIDE):  Metformin is used with a proper diet and exercise program and possibly with other medications to control high blood sugar. It is used in patients with type 2 diabetes. Controlling high blood sugar helps prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and sexual function problems. Proper control of diabetes may also lessen your risk of a heart attack or stroke. Metformin works by helping to restore your body's proper response to the insulin you naturally produce. It also decreases the amount of sugar that your liver makes and that your stomach/intestines absorb.   FDA Approval Date: 1995-03-03 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Pre diabetic I started this medicine a few months ago because of A1c was 5.7. It made me tired and just not feel good. Dr said stop for 3 months and recheck labs. Felt better but decided to start again because afraid labs would be bad. I've taken it for about 3 weeks now and I an depressed foggy no energy and leg pain. Took my last one this morning. I will check with Dr to see if there's something else that doesn't cause this awful feeling. F 71 3 months

1  Type 2 Diabetes endometrial lining build-up, fatigue, weakness, depression, suicidal thoughts, emotional highs and lows very extreme. extreme anger and rage. Hair loss, skin itching, loss of taste. I was diagnosed 3 months ago with Type 2 diabetes. He immediately put me on Metformin. Told me there would be stomach effects but they would go away over time. They weren't too bad as long as I took with my first mouthful of food. My blood sugar NEVER came down over 3 month period (he wanted to move me to 1500 mg which he said was standard) instead I quit. I experienced depression, weakness, suicidal thoughts, and then started having problems with my period which my gyno said had nothing to do with this. Then I had to have a biopsy and tests because even though I wasn't having a period my endometrial lining was still building up. Turns out there are studies on this and papers written, but when I told my doctor this she dismissed it. This drug is horrible but the doctors keep pushing it!! F 40 3 months

1  Insulin resistance My symptoms while on Metformin included the following: Constant burning across my upper epigastric region, insomnia, severe left leg pain on the lateral upper and lower side of my calf and at times in my left thigh. I also had a horrible weakness in my legs. If I had been sitting at a restaurant in a booth, or in a chair for some time, I had trouble getting up. I felt like a 90-year-old woman (I’m a young 60-year old) when I got up to walk. Near depression and fogginess with lack of motivation to do anything. I had an appendicitis a year ago, and I often wonder if the Metformin caused the inflammation that set off my appendicitis. Now, I’ve only been off the Metformin for 2 days, and the fog has lifted, and I have no more pain in my left leg. The burning in my stomach is gone too. On Metformin I had no joy in my life. So glad I discovered what was causing my pain and lack of joy in my life. It’s like a cloud has been lifted now that I’m not taking Metformin, and F 60 2 years

2  DM2 Severe, unpredictable diarrhea...even on the ER form. Persistent and unusual taste/odor...not a foul smell...just odd. I was literally living on Imodium (up to 4 a day) when I was taking this medication. It didn't matter what I ate, when I ate, or how much/little I ate...the diarrhea was awful. The only other side effect I had was a constant weird taste/smell in my mouth/nose that was reminiscent of a cross between freshly sawed wood and yeast bread. As soon as I stopped Metformin, this resolved within 2 days....and it returned within 1 day after a trial of restarting Metformin just to see what would happen. The diarrhea resolved within 2 days of stopping Metformin. F 55 8 months

5  PCOS The only side effect I've had is diarrhea, only on the first day of taking it. I see so many horror stories about this medicine. If you do not want to get violently ill, you have to eat right! This medicine does not tolerate carbs, so every meal has to be limited to a small amount of good carbs (i.e no white carbs). If you eat something bad, it's going to come out in the form of horrible diarrhea and nausea. Take the pill in the middle of your meal to avoid side effects as well. My period arrived in the first 2 days of taking it, I've lost 4 pounds, and my face is clear. I feel much better already! F 28 5 days

5  Trying to conceive / pcos I got pregnant! I was diagnost with PCOS about 15 years ago. I was using BCP and didn't have a period for about 10 yrs. Went off BCP to try to have a baby, and nothing happened for about 2 yrs. Doc put me on Met to help with ovulation and such. I had sporatic periods, and then just didn't monitor them. I went in for an exray and was asked if I possibly could be pregnant. I said "anything is possible". Nurse came in and told me I was! Turned out I was 3 months along :) That was 4 yrs ago, and our baby boy is 3 yrs old and healthy. If you have PCOS and trying to get pregnant with no success, try this med! I stopped it after finding out I was pregnant, and after I gave birth, my periods have slowly dissapeared again (which is fine with me!) F 35 4 months
