| 3 | Bipolar II Depression | Briefly describe the latest side effects you experienced. Last entry: I took one generic (Mylan, not great - bloating and weight gain, lost voice). Brand name Lamictal (Very good, but short time, due to bloating and hair loss) Now another generic: Apotex Lamotrigine (Canadian generic). As good or near as good as lamictal. No weight gain (I think lactose in the others made bloating worse). But lots of hair loss. Tremors, shaking, vision issues - blurry, and worsened astigmatism in my left eye. Dropping objects. Vertigo initially a few times a week. Insomnia at night, and sleeping in the day (but that could be "me" as well). Also on GSK Lamictal and Apo-lamotrigine initially I had rapid WEIGHT LOSS*. I am SKINNY and I am fit... but I lost like 7lb in a week, probably just adjusting. I lost a lot of weight as a teenager (I was obese) but have since been pretty fit. Despite weight loss, my stomach is bloated with fluid retention and that's from lamotrigine. People tell me lots | Additional Comments about LAMICTAL : Last entry: I have ADHD (severe) and BPII supposedly. I've been depressed lots of times from 16 years old to 30 (now). This is the only medication that really helped. I do feel more like myself now... but I don't want to lose my hair. I'm a guy, but I had long thick, nice hair up until I got on stimulants and now it's worse even on lamotrigine. Shedding crazy amounts. So much so, that I started on Finasteride. I have no recession, and I have diffuse hair loss. It's Adderall (short time only), this and Dexedrine. My hair loss started with diffuse thinning on Adderall, I quit it days later. Then I used Dexedrine and Spironolactone Cream for 2.5 years. And then it worsened again (was paused) on lamotrigine. I was so manic and my head raced so much i felt crazy! After taking it at night along with Zeprexa i was able to sleep again. Nowdays, my sleep pattern has stabilized but now i have extreme agitation, especially after my dose in the morning. My dose is 200 mg a day. I thought I was having a pregnancy scare but noticed that tender (larger breasts) were a side effect... I believe this drug also had me retain water and be swollen! Bit researched side effects and weight gain was my most feared one, as I had always been overweight, but over the past decade I had lost almost 80 lbs, even considered myself athletic. I had gained tiny amounts back prior to med, but it shot up 50+ lbs in the time I've been on it. I had taken welbutrin in the beginning with it, but had psychotic episodes, so came off that. Lamotrigine is only one I'm on now, and I'm fatigued all the time, with food control and cravings thru the roof. Now I'm reading so many comments on here that say they've had weight gain, even tho my Dr assured me this was very uncommon. Maybe they need to do a new study on symptoms then. Could my wt gain have been exasperated while in this med because of my preexisting eating disorder? Sadly,now the wt gain has made me even more depressed. I think my manic episodes are controlled now, but I miss those days because I was able to go nuts in my workouts and get my house cleaned, get my groceries... Now afraid to go off med because of poss withdrawal possibilities. A co-worker show father tried Lamotrigine for his BP almost died from the Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Had to be treated as a burn victim because his skin essentially sloughed off,including his insides. Made a miraculous recovery, but made me realize the power of this med. | F | 34 | 2 years 400 mg | 7/12/2015 | 3 | Depression, Anxiety, PTSD | Steven Johnson's Syndrome - started as a small very painful rash on my abdomen and with in a few hours was a giant swollen welt covering half of my belly. | Sadly the medication was working for me and I felt stable on it. The rash started after my 6th dose and I saw my psychiatrist immediately and was told to discontinue immediately as the rash is potentially life threatening. He trialed me on it again 10 days later and the rash came back with dose 1. I know this is rare, only .01% of people get it from this medication but it is life threatening, your organs are systematically shutting down.
