ALEVE  (NAPROXEN SODIUM):  Naproxen is used to relieve pain from various conditions. It also reduces pain, swelling, and joint stiffness caused by arthritis, bursitis, and gout attacks. This medication is known as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works by blocking your body's production of certain natural substances that cause inflammation. If you are treating a chronic condition such as arthritis, ask your doctor about non-drug treatments and/or using other medications to treat your pain. See also Warning section. Some brands of sustained-release naproxen take longer to be absorbed and are not recommended for pain that needs quick relief (such as during a gout attack). Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about your particular brand.   FDA Approval Date: 1994-01-11 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  For hip pain Within a day after taking my first dose of Aleve, an itchy, red rash developed on one of my feet and persisted for almost a week. After about four days, tingling developed on areas of my left foot and hand. I didn't put two and two together for a few days. All symptoms seemed to abate within 48 hours after stopping Aleve. It did seem to help my hip pain, but the side effects were troubling, annoying and worrisome. I'm sticking to the old standbys, Ibuprofin and Tylenol. M 62 7 days

1  Tendonitis I'd been prescribed a pain reliever for a moderate case of tendonitis. My PCP said that "anti-inflammatory Aleve" was the best one. So I took it three times and had no problems. (One pill per day, three separate days over the course of a week...never back to back). Then, I took one pill per day, two days in a row and that's when I had the reaction. Much like the others here...I've had itchy, red skin on my face, scalp, back, chest, and hands. My lips feel slightly swollen and sore. My eyes are red and irritated. I've had medicine-induced allergic reactions before and this is exactly what it's like. I've changed nothing in my diet, or other lifestyle...so it must be the Aleve. Bottom line...exercise caution WHENEVER taking anything new. What works wonders for some can cause havoc in others. Keep a list of your symptoms in a log so you can refer back to them later and keep your doctor informed. I've noticed that the doctors 'poo-poo' allergic reactions as normal course of business...so make sure you keep them in the loop. M 32 7 days

1  Gout After an gout attack the doctor suggested Aleve as an anti inflammatory. It seemed to help but after a week of one pill a day my hands started to itch severely and swelled so much I could not write. I went back to the doctor & he didn't have a clue and I assumed it was something I ate. I have taken a pill once or twice a month since then to help relive joint pain and noticed mild hand itching. Tonight an hour after taking the medication the itching on my hands and ankles is driving me crazy and I can't sleep. I finally figured out that Aleve is the culprit! On a recent trip to Canada I noticed that it is illegal to bring it into Canada without a prescription! The remaining Aleve pills just went into the trash. M 56 7 days

1  Prevention of inflammation After 7 days of taking Aleve (2 x per day) I had sudden, painless, massive GI bleeding; was rushed to the emergency room, passed out, more blood, code blue. I required 4 units of blood transfusion. Fortunately I survived this near-death experience, but it has left some big emotional scars. I have diverticulosis, and the doctors all said the Aleve caused the massive bleeding. This is probably an ultra-sensitivity to Aleve (or possibly all NSAIDs) and such a dramatic side-effect is rare -- but well documented in the medical literature (as I have found out since). NEVER take Aleve or any other NSAIDs (or aspirin) if you have diverticulosos or have ever experienced any GI bleeding, whether upper or lower. F 62 7 days

1  Head ache, Flu symptoms Hives all over body. Concentrated on Torso, groin, Scalp, back buttocks, ears, shortness of breath, Lips were the last to swell and itch. I had to be admitted to ER where they gave epinephrine in the belly to stop analyphalcic shock. An IV of other antihistamines. This was a terrible and scary experience This is a LARGE percentage of people having a bad reaction to ALEVE. It should be re-called. F 46 7 days

1  Myofascial pain/costochondritis Fine for a few days. By day four, tightness in throat, little red spots on my cheeks. Day five, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, slight dizziness, increased anxiety. Attributed it to various things - made no connection to Aleve. Day six, cheeks became very itchy and breathing even more labored. Some stomach pain. Started to question Aleve. Day seven, awoke at 330a with severe chest pain, difficulty breathing, cheeks flushed and terribly itchy. Researched Aleve and realized it was to blame. Last pill was yesterday morning, symptoms abating but still bothersome. Hopefully it will clear up soon and not develop into something more serious. Threw out the rest of my bottle, won't be taking it again. F 32 7 days

3  Ovarian pain Fever Blisters! I've never suffered from fever blisters in the past - the only thing I've done differently was added 2 Aleve in the morning and 2 Aleve in the evenings. Since then, I've been breaking out from fever blisters. I usually take Advil (without issues) but my doctor suggested the Aleve (since it's fewer pills). Not sure if the blisters really are from the Aleve, but that's really the only difference. (Of course I took my morning dose before finding this site). I'm going to stop for a few days and see if that helps them go away. I truly don't know if this is a side effect - has anyone else had similar issues? F 41 6 days

1  tailbone injury from a fall Pain relief and comfortable sleep for first 5 1/2 days. THEN a blotchy rash appeared on my chest and neck which rapidly spread to my back and shoulders. I stopped the Aleve and contacted my doctor and a dermatologist who gave me cortisone cream. The next day the rash extended to my abdomen, stomach and thighs. Aleve is the most likely cause, but I've been taken off all pills, including vitamins and put on Prednisone (20 mg twice a day) and Zyrtec. The rash looks better after one day, but still has a long way to go to get back to normal. At least it's not very itchy. An occasional normal dosage of Aleve should work for most people. Just don't overuse it and avoid the prescription dosage which is over 900 mg daily. F 70 6 days

1  Various sports injuries / broncitis After taking aleve for 2 to 3 days I experienced an insanely painful fluid build up at the base of my spine which was only relieved by spinal tap. I have taken it for a total of six days in my life. M 24 6 days

3  Tendonitis in thumbs and wrists I was taking 1 pill every 12 hours and for the first couple of days, I had stomach upset, dizziness and a general feeling of just being "off" or not quite myself but, it wasn't anything I couldn't cope with and it was helping the pain in my hands. However, on the 5th day, I took an aleve before going to bed, woke up two hours later with intense pain and burning in my stomach. This pain lasted several hours and became so intense, I contemplated a trip to the ER. But, since I had young children at home,I called a pharmacy who told me to try children's pepto bismol to see if that calmed the pain down. After several hours, the pain subsided but NEVER again will I take aleve - the pain was brutal! F 37 5 days

1  muscle pull After five days taking the aleve, I awoke at 1:30 A.M. with incredible itching on the palms of my hands which expanded to also include my arms. I could feel my lips begin to swell and it became more difficult to breathe. My wife drove me to the Hospital emergency room. By this time, my body was blotched red, the itch was unbearable, my face was incredibly swollen, and it was very difficult to breathe. I was given an IV and prescribed follow up medication & it took about 5 days to fully recover. My doc had me start taking aleve (I had never taken it before) for a suspected muscle pull. As I was taking the aleve, I had a feeling of being dis-oriented at times, stomach pain, constipation, then the real problems began as noted in the side effects box. This product can be very dangerous if you are allergic to it. M 60 5 days

1  severe muscle pain from Levaquin I took Aleve a few years ago for costochondritis with no side effects. But the last 3 times I have taken this drug my left eyelid swelled and I got a huge blister on the top. It always occurred in the same place on the same eyelid. But, it worked so well for the pain I tried to take it with an antihistime, but the same thing occurred. I will never take this drug again for fear each time it may get worse. I think it could be life threatening in some people. I don't have an allergy to aspirin or other NSAIDS. If you notice ANYTHING unusual after taking this or ANY drug, stop immediately and tell your doctor. F 62 5 days

1  bone spur Immediately after starting this medication I was having chills and sleeping alot I did not realize that this was the start of reactions from this dangerous medication.. I took this horrible drug for 5 days then my ankle started to swell.. a day later I woke up with a terrible itchy rash on my hands, arms and ankles. Both hands were swollen to almost twice there size. I took a benydrl which helped slightly I went to the dermatologist and was told to stop the Aleve immediately and the Doctor prescribed cortisone cream and hydroxyzine for the horrible itch. It has been 2 days since the last dose of medication and the rash and swelling are still there.I am hoping that it clears up soon this is terrible!!!!! DO NOT take this medication it took 5 days for the problem to show up and I don't know how long it is going to take to get it out of his system, my hands are red swollen and the itching is unbearable.  1  Cold/ Sinus pain & menstrual cramp Metalic taste in mouth, canker soars, irratated gums, sensitivity to most foods ( I do not have other food allergies) "Swollen" feelng in my head/brain, fatiuge, nausea, headache, itchy werid feeling in mouth and lips, overall "yucky" and out of sorts feeling. I still have many of these symptoms 11 days after taking the drug(s). I have taken Aleve for a few years now for menstrual cramps, it was pretty effective, though took a while to kick in-approx 1 hr, I would take 3-4 caps over a 2 day period, 2 on the first day 1-2 the second ( I used to take Advill but it stopped being as effective, and made my eye lids itchy). This time I took it for a cold, it wasn't very effective at handling the sinus pain, I also took a 1/2 dose of "Dayquil" 2 times, I had not done this before with Aleve, (I had taken Dayquil on it's own w/ no problem) and may be why I had this reaction, though the 2 drugs are supposed to be safe taken together. From what I can tell this is a very unsafe drug, as many have been taking it for years with no reaction, and then suddenly a life threatening one...doesn't sound too good. F 32 5 days

1  Hip Pain I took Aleve for severe hip pain. The first 4 days were simply wonderful. IT WORKED and worked well. Then on day 5, I had a rash on my left leg. It was like Poison Ivy. Then it spread and spread and SPREAD. I went to the Doctor and was treated. I called the Aleve folks. They were aware of this Side-effect after 10 days use. The worst part of this side-effect reaction is the blisters on my hands. I count 97 (ninety-seven), 1/8' (one eigth inch) blisters on my hands. 4 days into the rash and it has stopped spreading! The rash on my body is not good but the hand blisters are worse. The only redeeming factor is the Prednisone given me by the doctor for the rash, is helping the hip pain too. Please, Please, BE CAREFUL with this medicine. THIS IS MY FIRST REACTION TO ANY PILL OR SHOT IN 61 YEARS. M 61 5 days
