ALEVE  (NAPROXEN SODIUM):  Naproxen is used to relieve pain from various conditions. It also reduces pain, swelling, and joint stiffness caused by arthritis, bursitis, and gout attacks. This medication is known as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works by blocking your body's production of certain natural substances that cause inflammation. If you are treating a chronic condition such as arthritis, ask your doctor about non-drug treatments and/or using other medications to treat your pain. See also Warning section. Some brands of sustained-release naproxen take longer to be absorbed and are not recommended for pain that needs quick relief (such as during a gout attack). Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about your particular brand.   FDA Approval Date: 1994-01-11 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  Joint/Muscle Pain Inflamed mouth tissue, nausea and light-head. It assisted in taking the edge off the pain for quite some time (I've used Aleve on and off for the past year), but the side effects I'm now experiencing will have me going back to Tylenol. My gums are red and inflamed--it feels like I burned the inside of my mouth on something hot--but the pain and discomfort has yet to subside. F 35 2 weeks

2  superficial blood clot in leg Itchy, blotches all over face. Extremely bloated. Tender feet. Until I read this website, I thought ankle itching was caused by unseen mosquitoes. Not so I think! I just took an over the counter Aleve 1 hr ago. Second for the day. Wow. Thanks for this website. I would have continued using this drug and wondering why my face had broken out so badly. I am sensitive to foods that cause itchy patches on face so thought that was the problem. Interesting though that it takes redness out of vein and really helps pain in leg. Oh well....back to the drawing board. F 63 2 weeks

1  Normal headaches and pains All I can say is RETAIN tons of water! Also I got very sleepy when I would take it and had no idea why, until I finally figured out it was the aleve. It seemed silly to me at first because it's a simple pain med but this little pill can have serious side effects. I only take Tylenol now. F 26 2 weeks

1  hip, leg and back pain Red spots on my forehead and the rest of my face It took a long time to figure out that it was the Aleve that was causing my rashes. I thought I had increased sensitivity to the sun because of my age and because of other medications (Nexium and hydrochlorothiazide), and that my sunscreen had stopped working. After wearing a hat for a few days, then staying indoors a couple of days, and still having the rashes, I figured it out. The rashes went away when I stopped taking Aleve. There is a silly comment on your site, by the way, from a skeptic who doesn't believe this is possible in a "normal" person. He should be open to the testimony of others even if these effects are not universal. My use of Aleve was infrequent until a fall a couple of weeks ago. After that, I think I took it on average 3 times every two days until I realized it was causing my rashes. I did take it once a while early this past summer while traveling, and am not sure whether it caused rashes or sunburn back then. I think so, but I was spending time out F 58 2 weeks

2  severe cramps;endometriosis itching on tops of feet, palms of hands and severe intense itching on scalp I've taken alleve a few times before without problems but started taking it daily about a week and half ago to deal with some severe menstrual cramps and pain associated with endometriosis; it relieves the pain but the side-effects have gotten worse over time and are quite annoying; I'm concerned some of the more life-threatening effects may eventually occur so I've stopped taking it F 39 1.5 weeks

1  hip pain I had only started taking Aleve the week before for hip pain that I experience regularly. Shortly after going to bed one evening, I got up to take an Aleve because hip pain was keeping me awake. I still had a fairly full stomach from a late dinner out with friends. Within 20 minutes my palms started tingling and itching intensely. I got up to run them under cold water, thinking that would help. Very quickly my face started to turn red and I felt nauseous. A few minutes later I threw up everything in my stomach. My full stomach must have slowed the rate of absorption of the med into my system. While I was experiencing the nausea, I noticed hives around my wrists and my hands had swollen significantly. A few minutes afther throwing up my symptoms started to subside. At first I thought I'd had an allergic reaction to the clams in my dinner, but I couldn't account for the almost two hour delay of symptoms. I now realize it had to be the Aleve. I've never experienced an allergic reaction t I guess it must work for some people, but I'll steer clear of it in the future. F 50 1 weeks

1  Sciatica Took Aleve a total of four times (8 tablets total) over a period of one week. Caused an allergic reaction that gave me a moderately severe case of hives (7 on a scale of 1-10) on my arms, legs and back. My hands and fingers swelled to the size of catcher's mitts and remained that way for three days. Thankfully, my face and throat were never affected, and I never had a problem breathing. However, the itching on my arms, palms and fingers was virtually unbearable!! I'd rather be subjected to the Chinese Water Torture than experience itching like that again. A day after the breakout, I took OTC Benadryl, Claritan and an anti-fungal spray to help relive the itching, along with placing cold compresses on my hands and arms when the itching was at its worse, which was every few hours or so over a period of three days. The OTCs helped only midly, but were better than doing nothing. Finally, after three or four days of intolerable itching, the hives and the swelling went away. Aleve is the firs Take with extreme caution. Aleve is an excellent painkilling med if you're not allergic to it. But it definitely isn't worth taking to find out. M 39 1 weeks

4  arthritis pain in knees & neck I was prescribed Naprosyn in December for severe leg/knee pain & when the prescription was empty continued with OTC Aleve- 2 pills twice daily to approximate the dosage. It worked very well helping with the pain (which I found out when I stopped taking it). Along with it I have had a rash and hives on my legs which I thought was a possible allergy but did not connect it to Aleve. Then last week I started getting severe pain in my lower back & started worrying about kidney/liver problems which I know can happen with NSAIDS. Next my tongue and mouth started burning/tingling more and more. I stopped the Aleve, symptoms subsided. Because I was back in pain, I restarted the Aleve, only 1 pill twice a day and tongue/mouth numbness/tingling is right back. I will stop this medicine today. Although the medicine helped me greatly with my pain I'm afraid to take it any more because of the side effects. My legs are still swollen and rashy, my mouth sore/numb/tingly. I'm not allergic to any other drugs (except penicillin) or any other foods, etc. I will have to go back to the doctor and see what he can do to help me manage the pain of my arthritis. With Aleve I was able to work pretty normally instead of creeping about gingerly in constant pain, but I'm afraid to continue with this drug. F 60 120 days

4  Headaches/ broken arm I have taken Alleve since about 1998 off and on for headaches. I never noticed any problem. About 2 months ago I broke my elbow so i took a lot of Alleve to keep the swelling down (I thought). About a week ago I stopped taking it and about the same time I have had swollen burning lips and a sensitive tongue. After a week of using hydrocortisone cream and lip balm, I didn't see much results. But today my lips are less swollen. It is not painful just bothersome. I do suffer from anxiety at times. After reading this web page I am wondering if Alleve contributes to that. F 56 45 days

1  UTI and fibromyalgia Severe hives, intense itching esp. on hands, feet, scalp. Finished 7 days of Macrobid. Worked wonders for the UTI. Had also been taking Aleve for a few days. Next morning took 2 more Aleve but within an hour developed hives beginning on neck, lower back. Progressed to all over body, except face. Eventually, any thing that touched my body would create a breakout--clothes, self, steering wheel. Claritin and Prednisone are giving precious little relief. The last two nights I have been a heartbeat away from a trip to the ER, but am riding this out. This is day four with no subsiding of symptoms. Don't know if this is due to Macro or Aleve or both.  1  Knee injury inflammation I developed a horrible facial rash from taking this medication. My cheeks, forehead and chin turned bright red with a rash resembling tiny hives. The hives oozed, itched, caked over, and the skin started flaking off. It itched, burned, and tingled, and absolutely nothing I tried relieved the symptoms. Then my face swelled, and my skin started cracking. Fortunately, at this point I read an article in a medical column about a reader who had developed a rash after taking Aleve. I immediately stopped taking it, and my symptoms are slowly subsiding, but it's been over a week now, and my symptoms returned after being in the sun, even with sunscreen protection. This drug is bad news, and I don't think the medical community is sufficiently aware of the wide range and frequency of the problems associated with it. F 65 30 days

1  arthritis none but relief wore off after 2 weeks Natural cures are better; apple cidar vinegar can effectively cure arthritis and headaches; vitamin C crystals can help pain at high doses; the Gerson diet with no salt can cure migrains, etc see doctoryourself.com and 'just say no to drugs' (Nancy Reagan).  4  Sciatic nerve pinch and disc injury Hard to determine if it's related to the medicine, but I feel a little light headed, almost seasick. I tend to take it with 2-3 200 MG Ibuproffen, as this combination seems to work the best for me, without any severe problems. Aleve alone doesn't seem to stop the referred leg pain caused by the pinched nerve. I am a little worried about the possible risks of suddenly stopping use of it. I would recommend it (with caution) if you have nerve pain. You may need to team it up with other drugs like asprin or ibuproffen M 34 14 days
