ALEVE  (NAPROXEN SODIUM):  Naproxen is used to relieve pain from various conditions. It also reduces pain, swelling, and joint stiffness caused by arthritis, bursitis, and gout attacks. This medication is known as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works by blocking your body's production of certain natural substances that cause inflammation. If you are treating a chronic condition such as arthritis, ask your doctor about non-drug treatments and/or using other medications to treat your pain. See also Warning section. Some brands of sustained-release naproxen take longer to be absorbed and are not recommended for pain that needs quick relief (such as during a gout attack). Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about your particular brand.   FDA Approval Date: 1994-01-11 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  My mom took it and died! My mom toke an aleve, called her sister and told her she was itching from head to toe and asked if she had benedryl. By the time her sister got there, she lives a few floors up in this condo, my mom was blue lipped, and gurgling, and then went stiff, her tongue was swollen and she was gasping for breath. The peramedics could not revive her. She passed away on May 21st. DO NOT TAKE IT! IT'S DEADLY! F 79 1 years

1  Relieve general aches and pains I took this off and on for about a year with no problems. Then suddenly there was rash and small painful splits on my foreskin. The first time, I thought it was an infection of some kind, because it cleared up after 4 days of triple polysporn, washing it 4-5 times a day, and sitting to pee so I didn't have to retract my foreskin. 6 months later it returned, and I went through the same ritual. It was almost gone, and I took another aleve, not suspecting it was the problem. within a 1/2 an hour the rash was back and worse than ever.. I put 2&2 together and picked up a strong magnifying glass to read the tiny..tiny..tiny print on the container, where it revealed my symptoms. Apparently, these symptoms are particularly common in people over 60 (I'm 64) It's been a week, and the rash is subsiding and the last little split is almost gone. I will never take this drug again, and will warn everyone I know about it.. M 64 1 years

1  Arthritis I was taking a leave for the arthritis in my knees and it did help with the pain however in the last year to six months I've noticed a lot of swelling in my legs and ankles. I attributed to the fact that I was overweight and some days it would be worse than others. However, these last few months the swelling in my ankles and legs has been horrible. Over the holiday I got the flu and I stopped taking it for a several days and suddenly my legs and ankles are back to normal again I have no Adema also my blood pressure went up a little bit last couple months it is now again back to normal I developed an allergic reaction to it I suggest that you look at the bottle and look at the side effects carefully because I am definitely happier without it now You can develop an allergic reaction to his product overtime be careful F 58 1 years

1  Arthritis & pinched nerve - neck I had been taking Aleve for around a year for a pinched nerve and arthritis in my neck, when I was told by my doctor to stop all anti-inflammatories due to an upcoming surgery. After I discontinued the Aleve I experienced terrible back pains and body aches that lasted for about a week. I didn't connect this to the Aleve until my husband, who took Aleve for his arthritis, had to stop it as it might interfere with a medication he starting. He also experienced the terrible back pain and body aches, which also lasted about a week. This medication took the pain away, but when it was stopped it was like we were addicted to it. I would not recommend this medication to anyone. F 60 1 years

1  PMS Cramps / Migraine Within 30 mins of taking naproxen the back of my right hand started to sweat (very odd) then my skin flushed and my BP must have dropped because I lost my vision and fell to the floor unconscious. I regained consciousness and looked at myself in the mirror and noticed my whole body was red. It took 2 times of these exact symptoms before I realized it was the naproxen. The second time was worse. I had taken this stuff for at least a year prior with no issues. Never again though! I don't know what is in this stuff but it's bad. I'm staying away from Ibuprophen now, too, out of fear since they are very similiar. Acetominophen is what I take now. F 30 1 years

5  Headaches I developed an allergic reaction to it. My eyes swelled to the point where I could not open them, my lips swelled quite a bit as well, and I experienced general swelling to my entire face. I had to go to the ER for a shot of Benedryl to counteract the allergy. I had taken it on and off for about a year for various aches and pains without any trouble. It was the only OTC pain reliever that worked for my headaches. F 33 12 months

1  headache i expericed swelling of the lips to the point where they became very itchy and started to get hives in the lower part of the lips.. this happened just 5 min after aleve was taken ... its been three days and the swelling just went down but now my lips are super dry and purple... its not the first time its happened. i had gone to the doctor before and never knew what my reactions were to it he beleived it was either a lipstick i was wearing not knowing that aleve was taken almost every month to relieve my cramps before my period and i as thinking it was my hormones that would make my lips swell along with the itching... so i stopped wearing lipstick for a month and not till jul 31st that i decided to take aleve i finally figured out that it was that what had been causing the reaction every single month before my period... please be careful.. its such a horrible eperience... im glad i found out it was aleve what i was reacting to i will never ever take it again ... horrible experince.  5  Groin pull, knee pain I have had no side effects. It's been wonderful; long-lasting pain relief, no stomach nausea, no headaches, no noticeable side effects whatsoever. Started taking prescription dosage once a day for groin pull. Before last December, never heard of Naproxen. But after starting on it, I had to find the OTC version. I take it now, two tablets (220mg each)about four days a week, after I run, for knee pain (small meniscus tear)and I am so happy to have it. Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen both cause minor, sometimes significant, side effects to my system. M 45 8 months

1  Knee Pain Intestinal Bleeding and elevated Liver test results Anyone on Plavix and/or asprin should not take Aleve or similar drugs without very close monitoring of a licensed medical doctor. Don't allow a nurse, NP-nurse practitioner or a PA- Physician's Assistant monitor you. They, in my opinion are NOT qualified to monitor and manage such a risky combination of medications when blood appears in your stools. If you have a physician who asks you to see one of the above I just mentioned, Find another doctor. Aleve may be safe for some people for very short term use, but long term use should be out of the question. Aleve certainly helps reduce pain, BUT it places some people such as me at very serious risk. Check the toilet paper and the bowel movement in the toilet everytime you go. I'm not kidding you about this. I's too serious to take lightly and I hope you all watch out for this so called side effect. The blood is the effect and the reduction of pain is the side effect as far as I'm concerned. Good Luck. M 67 8 months

1  Arthritis My grandfather took Aleve for about 6-12 months. He ended up with bleeding ulcers and a ruptured vein. He died on the operating table of a massive heart attack which according to the studies that I have read, can be attributed to a sudden stop in taking the medicine. I urge anyone taking this medicine to excersize extreme caution. I am including his age and gender in this study. M 73 8 months

5  Tendonitis, muscle pain, gout, etc. None at first, but after prolonged use GERD and general digestive problems. The product works for me extremely well - like nothing else prescribed or over the counter. All my various aches & pains mostly kept me awake at night, so I would take one at bedtime. After several months I found that I was taking one every night (still no problems). I had heard that prolonged usage could be a problem, but my doc said "No". Now (after about 5 mos nightly usage) he says it is what has kicked in my extreme chest pains - reflux (thought I was having a heart attack!) - and aggravated my long dormant IBS. So I say use it cautiously, watch out for the allergic reactions mentioned here, but even if you tolerate it, take a break from using it! M 53 6 months

4  major arthritus pain in legs/knees I was taking about 1-2 Aleve pills every other day or so. I started noticing occasional painful blisters inside my mouth - maybe one every other month. I just made the connection now reading other people's comments! Will switch back to Advil and see if the blisters go away - however Advil doesn't kill the pain. Works great for pain - completely knocks it out! F 38 6 months

4  Carpral Tunnel Lower back pain, random itchy skin, sleepyness, facial acne. I was recommended to take 1 pill morning and 1 night for my Capral tunnel problems in my wrists. I was pleased with how well it helped. But after a few weeks, I noticed some other problems like back pain and acne. Didn't know it was the Aleve until I started reading on the possible side effects. Not sure if it's worth the other issues to take this stuff. M 39 6 months

2  Fibromyalgia control I've been taking aleve twice a day, morning and night, for @ six months now. @ 2 months in, started having this weird kind of 'crawling stomach' feeling in the middle of the night, and some tingling in the tips of the fingers in my left hand. Never connected those symptoms with aleve, until a friend mentioned the same thing. The only similarity is that we're both taking aleve at night. I'm stopping it for a while, and seeing if those VERY neurological symptoms are caused by aleve. it's tricky stuff- if you look at the side effects, they're multi-system F 50 6 months

1  headache general feeling of anxiety (very unusual for me), leg cramps, nausea, and worst of all incoherent, illogical thoughts that were disturbing. No headache relief at all. I've never had an allergic reaction to anything before this. The medicine was left over from the first time I took it with little result. This medicine should be taken off the market. F 32 6 months
