Advised not to use it before exercise so as to not mask pain from real injuries. | M | 40 | 7 years | 9/23/2002 | 4 | ankylosing spondylitis (AS) | nausea/vomiting if taken on empty stomach | For AS, I found naprosyn to be the best NSAID, if taken regularly and in sufficient doses. For me, much more effective than ibuprofen or VIOXX. Useful for pain up to about 4 on scale of 10, but can sometimes prevent pain from getting past that point. Many with AS use OxyContin or similar for breathroughs or flareups beyond what naprosyn can handle. I use Lortab-10 (hydrocodone/APAP) which is almost as effective as OxyContin and much cheaper. | M | 48 | 4 years | 3/28/2003 | 2 | Back pain | Pain in upper intestine, tightness in chest, difficulty breathing (I took Aleve on an empty stomach-something you're not supposed to do). Also experienced nausea and vomiting, which seemed to intensify the headache pain. | It may work for some, but I wouldn't recommend it. | F | 38 | 1 days | 3/29/2003 | 2 | osteoarthritis | severe right leg pain and cramps for 2 weeks which then went away when I discontinued to use Aleve | F | 37 | 3 weeks | 6/25/2004 | 3 | plantar fasciitis and heel spur | After one to two weeks of taking Celebrex,to help me through a trip I was scheduled to take, I started to have stomach discomfort with bloating, stomachache, and constipation. I had started it previous to the trip so that my foot would quit hurting long enough to go on the trip. When I returned, I could not afford Celebrex (doctor had given samples the first time), and I bought Aleve and started taking that. While I was on the trip, after taking Celebrex, I had pain and also when I took the Aleve. It took me awhile to realize that I only had the pain from the time I took Celebrex and it continued when I took the Aleve. | F | 72 | 13 days | 6/27/2004 | 1 | LOWER BACK PAIN | BLOODY STOOL. SEVERE LOWER ABDOMINAL PAIN WITH SHOOTING PAINS. HAVE APPT W/DOCTOR TOMORROW. | M | 68 | 5 weeks | 7/28/2004 | 3 | Joint/Muscle Pain | Inflamed mouth tissue, nausea and light-head. | It assisted in taking the edge off the pain for quite some time (I've used Aleve on and off for the past year), but the side effects I'm now experiencing will have me going back to Tylenol. My gums are red and inflamed--it feels like I burned the inside of my mouth on something hot--but the pain and discomfort has yet to subside. | F | 35 | 2 weeks | 8/9/2004 | 1 | joint pain | hives, blisters inside mouth, swollen eyelids to the point that my eyes would not open. large red splotches on backs of legs and chest. lips so swollen that i can hardly talk. | F | 61 | 1 days | 8/14/2004 | 4 | middle and lower back pain | I did not have any side effects. I take two before starting work, which consists of a lot of bending and lifting. I also wear a brace belt. This drug has really helped with the pain. | F | 42 | 2 weeks | 8/22/2004 | 4 | arthritis and migraines | None except for occasional indigestion. | Worked great for headaches, arthritis and sinus pain. I seem to build up a tolerance to it though, if I have taken it for an extended period of time. Then it stops working for me, and I have to take celebrex instead, for the arthrtitis pain | F | 47 | 4 years | 9/27/2004 | 5 | Menstrual cramps & Headaches | No Side Effects | I love Aleve! It really decreases the pain instantly. I have been on Naproxen Sodium as a prescription and then someone told me that is what Aleve is. So I always have it handy. | F | 25 | 7 years | 10/10/2004 | 5 | Headache; pain from injury | I would advise those known allergic reactions to aspirin or similar medications to be cautious. However, about 12 years back, I had severe allergic reactions to aspirin and pain relievers (other than Tylenol) - hives all over my body, severe swelling, etc. My doctor told me that although I was experiencing allergic reactions to these medications that many times these reactions stop. This was the case for me. I can now take all medications without experiencing allergic symptoms (I discovered this through trial - not something that is probably the best idea). In any case, I have not experienced any major side effects with Aleve, although be sure to take with a full glass of water as recommended to avoid upset stomach. | I am currently taking Aleve for an injury I sustained from a fall. It works great - quickly reduces the pain and swelling from the injury and works over a sustained period of time consistently (doesn't noticably | F | 28 | 2 days | 11/13/2004 | 2 | reduce pain | After recently being given permission to walk on a healing double fracture, I was taking Aleve for the past two weeks to reduce pain. Today I experienced bloody bowel movement and am calling doctor for appointment and recommendation for new pain releiver. | F | 50 | 2 months | 11/23/2004 | 1 | Arthritis | My grandfather took Aleve for about 6-12 months. He ended up with bleeding ulcers and a ruptured vein. He died on the operating table of a massive heart attack which according to the studies that I have read, can be attributed to a sudden stop in taking the medicine. | I urge anyone taking this medicine to excersize extreme caution. I am including his age and gender in this study. | M | 73 | 8 months | 12/20/2004 | 5 | aches and pains of age and work | Have absolutly NO SIDE EFFECTS, this is the ONLY MEDICATION I have taken in the past 10 years. | I don't really trust all the NEW? medicines that have come about in the past few years...Most of the trouble people have is mixing half a dozen different medications..But, with Aleve I just have one pain medicine AND NO COMPLICATIONS, TAKEN EVERY DAY FOR TEN YEARS..... | M | 50 | 10 days | 12/21/2004 | 5 | migraine, menstrual & muscle pain | I am concern now with all the latest reports, but I´ve never had any side effects, and it is so perfect to me, it would be terrible not to have it. | I take it with Dramamine when I have migrane and it works better than costly prescription drugs, that have less effect over my migraines. | F | 35 | 10 years | 12/23/2004 | 4 | M | | 12/25/2004 | 5 | arthritis | not sure but my blood pressure started to become high which previously never had a blood pressure problem. Stopped aleve and blood pressure went down. Started taking tylenol arthritis. Tylenol did not relieve my symptoms as well as Aleve. My doctor originally told me to take Aleve. I took one in the AM and 1 at PM. Now I have been alternating with tylenol and aleve. | Is there a connection to Aleve causing high blood pressure in some people? | F | 68 | 1 years | 2/8/2005 |
ALEVE (NAPROXEN SODIUM): Naproxen is used to relieve pain from various conditions. It also reduces pain, swelling, and joint stiffness caused by arthritis, bursitis, and gout attacks. This medication is known as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works by blocking your body's production of certain natural substances that cause inflammation. If you are treating a chronic condition such as arthritis, ask your doctor about non-drug treatments and/or using other medications to treat your pain. See also Warning section. Some brands of sustained-release naproxen take longer to be absorbed and are not recommended for pain that needs quick relief (such as during a gout attack). Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about your particular brand. FDA Approval Date: 1994-01-11 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)
