| 2 | Massive Toenail Fungus | Abdominal gas, greasy bowel movements, change in taste | I am suffering from a massive toenail fungus. Took Lamisil over 4 years ago and it went away, but within the last year it has come back with a vengeance. I am starting 60 days into the treatment and I have yet to see any new growth in my nails that show the fungus being arrested. My health insurance plan does not pay for the laser treatment, so I hope this works. All 10 of my toes are affected. All ten toes got 6 treatments, one week apart. 30 days later the doctor say let's try another 2 because he sees no improvement. So 30 days later (seeing no improvement) we have another consultation and he suggests the generic equivalent of Lamisil to be taken once a day for 7 days, then 30 days later repeat, then 30 days later repeat again. So I got a prescription for 21 pills @ 250mg. I was very leery of the medication, but taking it so infrequently seemed reasonable. I am happy to say that improvement is obvious; it looks like another 30 days or so and all my nails will be good. So is it the Lamisil or laser that works? Maybe in my case both were necessary. Allergist explained that it isn't an allergic reaction, rather, the Lamisil likely triggered my histamines and it started a cycle that needs to be broken. He said that there is a war between histamines and anti-histamines and whichever is better represented, will prevail. In my case, there was more histamine. Anway, he said to take 2-3 zyrtec tablets every day until you are not itching for 2-3 weeks, then scale back the zyrtec until 1 tablet a week until you are off. That should take care of the itch / hive problem. I am now on my first day of being 99% itch free in three weeks. Hope this helps any others out there suffering the same. He said it is safe to considerably more than indicated on the box but you may get drowsy. Drowsy beats itchy by a long shot! I don't like sugar, but I craved it madly since taking Terbinafine, thus the gain weight right? Yay, lucky me. | Week 1 was the hardest mainly due to the fear of the vast reviews on the Internet and the warning label on the bottle, but after the first week the headache went away and began to have more energy than I was used to. I was fairly fit before using Terbinafine, mainly because I ate well and didn't indulge in sweets, but out of no where I had uncontrollable sugar craves. I bloated. I was very unhappy for the first month and a half until I began to see healthy life on those awful nails. All my liver panels have been normal. Oh, I did have to wait a few days for my new prescription to be filled while the doctor waited on the test results. Once I began taking them again, I once again had a headache for about a day and a half. Nothing else since. I have a couple weeks left to go and my nails are looking good considering I had this for fifteen years, but they are growing strong. I just threw out all of my old socks away, bought some sprays and Lamisil cream to be on the safe side. NOTE...what made me look into the drug was my husbands experience 10 years ago. Extremely high liver numbers after just 3 weeks of the oral drug.
