MACROBID  (NITROFURANTOIN; NITROFURANTOIN, MACROCRYSTALLINE):  This medication is an antibiotic used to treat bladder infections (acute cystitis). It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (such as common cold, flu). Using any antibiotic when it is not needed can cause it to not work for future infections. This medication should not be used in infants younger than 1 month old (see also Precautions section). This drug should not be used to treat infections outside the bladder (e.g., kidney infections such as pyelonephritis or perinephric abscesses).   FDA Approval Date: 1991-12-24 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  UTI Killer migraine after 2 doses. Chills and body aches. I kept taking the drug and the side effects subsided after 24 hours. Seems to be helping UTI. I can’t take other antibiotics so I didn’t have much choice. F 67 5 days

3  UTI dizziness, aching joints, tingling legs and feet, sore throat, fatigue, rapid heartbeat that was sometimes erratic, stomach bloat and some pain Still have one more pill to go but am hoping that the infection will be cleared up and all of these awful feelings will go away at that time. No one warned me of these side effects. F 67 4 days

1  UTI The worst is the stomach bloating/pain followed by aggravating daily headache, turning into a migraine, tired, feeling like I just had to lie down. After reading the other comments, I, also, would not recommend this drug to anyone. F 67 7 days

1  UTI After the second dose I experienced nausea, headache, severe chills, body aches, and fever of 103.2. Nasal swab testing was negative for flu. My doctor said it was probably a virus and to continue taking the Macrobid. Symptoms continued, and I also developed a rash (petechiae) from knees to feet, and burning sensations in lower extremities and feet. By day four the "virus" seemed to be moving down into my chest (pain on taking a deep breath), so I took some Mucinex, with no improvement. I started experiencing muscle pains in my upper and lower right leg, as well as knee, that made walking painful. I stopped Macrobid after 11th dose and nausea, fever, chills, headache, rash, muscle pain all quickly disappeared within hours. Cough is slower to resolve, but improving. I have taken Macrobid twice before in the last 4 months for UTIs and thought it worked really well, with no apparent side effects. For that reason, I didn't suspect the connection this time. Only when the symtoms persisted and got worse did I start looking for possible connections. I was shocked to see my very symptoms listed again and again by others. I have never been allergic to any medications in the past, and was feeling very well the day before, completing a 6.5 mile hike with lots of energy. I ended up having to cancel a scheduled surgery due to the fever, and the original urine culture came back negative for a UTI. My husband and others I'd been around never had any symptoms.  1  UTI Last year I took my last dose of Macrobid, went to bed and woke up 2 hours later very sick with flu like symptoms and a feeling of pressure in my chest. Later a rash developed along with swollen, painful hands. I was diagnosed with viral bilateral pneumonia. This year I was prescribed Macrobid, and after the first 2 doses, I had the same symptoms as last year. After a week, eight physcians, and a hospital stay, I figured it out by myself. I still have elevated liver enzymes, muscle weakness, and tingling in my hands. Hopefully, things will normalize. Doctors are NOT familiar with treating or even looking for this adverse effect of Macrobid. I saw a pulmonologist, who is quite familiar with this terrible adverse effect of Macrobid. It is much more likely to occur in those who take it long term and for a maintainence treatment of frequent UTI. In these people, when it does occur, the respiratory complication is forever.  1  UTI Shortness of breath, malaise Stopped taking after 2 days when I couldn't even drink a full glass of water without stopping to catch my breath. Even coming down the stairs made me breathless. This is my 2nd morning without taking this awful pill & I am still short of breath. Hope it subsides soon. Dr. has prescribed Cipro, but I will not take it until I feel that Macrobid is out of my system. Have been advised by pharmacist that if I don't feel better today, I should go to the ER. F 67 2 days

1  UTI Possible Prostatitis After taking the medication for a week I experienced rectal bleeding. Colonoscopy determined I had a unspecific colitis. Stopped the medication, the colitis cleared up. Several months later, another UTI, doctor gave me the same medication again, same results. I'll never take it again M 67 7 days

1  UTI Nearly three years after taking five MacroBid pills over a 2.5 day period, I still experience the pain of severe nerve damage. The pain is in my arms, hands, lower legs, and feet. MacroBid was poison to my system and has negatively impacted my quality of life. I suffered a knee fracture over eight years ago, and following that injury I developed RSD. The RSD had gone into remission. However, after taking MacroBid three years ago, the RSD re-emerged and still causes constant pain now requiring an anti-convulsant (Gabapentin) to keep it somewhat in check. I would definitely stay away from this poison -- MacroBid. There are many other antibiotics that can be used to cure a UTI. F 67 2.5 days

1  Cystitis Cough, gas, stomach pain, chills, headache and hives. Do not take this drug! I have never had a severe reaction to a drug like I have this. I had taken it once before with few minor side effect but this time by days 3 I was seeing stomach pain, cough and could not keep warm. On 4th night I saw headache, gas , and chills worse along with this dry cough. I finished the 5th days course and spotted couple of red like ezema patches on lower legs. Next day still seeing chills and rash expanding up legs and on both arms I went to pharmacy. It was not exema it was hives its now day 7 I have finished the 5 day course of macrobid 2 days ago. Yet, the cough is still there and the hives are getting worse. My skin on my arms and the whole of my legs including feet and hands are covered in area of red bloches and loads of small bumps with red spots in as well as white bumps with little red spot in. I started certirzine hydrochloride antihistamines 10 mg last night pharmacist recommended but seeing how bad the hives have got overnight I am just hoping things will settle down. Its too early to say if the u t i has cleared but I would never recommend this drug to anyone or take it again myself. The reaction I have had even made me frightened to take the cetririzine at first reading the possible side affects and living on my own but the hives were too bad not to try an antihistamines F 67 5 days

1  UTI Worst drug ever!!! I had such a horrid headache and hurt all over and then developed diarrhea that still hasn't stopped for about 10 days. I feel horrible and am very angry that I was prescribed it. Went to ER yesterday, because I was so ill. They checked me for everything and said Macrobid was drug of choice for UTI. I thought I had developed diverticulitis or something along that line. Cat Scan, labs, sent me home with another prescription for another pill for my "troubled" colon that I am most likely NOT going to take. There needs to be large print warnings BEFORE any one takes this drug!! Now, I have no choice. F 67 1 days

1  UTI Extreme fatigue, constant body aches, breathlessness on everyday activities, flu-like symptoms but no fever. Took a rapid covid test because I felt so bad but was negative. Was going to go to a doc in a box tomorrow and get a blood test to see what is off but after discovering these threads on the side effects of Macrobid, I feel much better mentally knowing this drug could possibly be causing all these symptoms. At 67-years-old, a lot of other things could be brewing at this age, I'll dc tonight and hope for the best. F 67 6 days

1  Uti Tightness in my chest, like heart attack, lung congestion (my lungs were completely clear before I started Macrobid), neuropathy, difficulty urinating, numbness in groin and buttocks, inability to pass a bowel movement, lethargy that was incapacitating. It has been two weeks since I finished the prescription, and I am still struggling to get over the lung congestion, tightness in chest, and numbness. F 66 7 days

1  UTI Two days after finishing the drug, developed severe hives with swollen eyes, lips, large welts all over face, head, scalp, and neck. Hives then expanded to include body areas. The itching was horrible, Tried Benadryl and 1% hydrocortisone creme neither had any effect. Saw doctor after two days, confirmed it was a drug allergy to the Macrobid. Prescribed Prednisone for 10 days starting with 50mg today and decreasing for each of 10 days. Took first dose 7 hours ago and starting to feel some relief from the itching. F 66 10 days

1  UTI Worked well at first. At the end of treatment...most severe stomach pain, nearly collapsed with it. Most extreme fatigue I ever experienced. EKG said heart attack..other tests said "no". Endoscopy, throat scope..all okay. It has taken me a month or so to come out of it.Still weak and tired.Am guessing all problems were due to Macrobid. I will never ever take it again.I am allergic to sulfa. Do your research. Older Rx works well for UTI. F 66 7 days
