PAXIL  (PAROXETINE HYDROCHLORIDE):  Paroxetine is used to treat depression, panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder. It works by helping to restore the balance of a certain natural substance (serotonin) in the brain. Paroxetine is known as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). This medication may improve your mood, sleep, appetite, and energy level and may help restore your interest in daily living. It may decrease fear, anxiety, unwanted thoughts, and the number of panic attacks. It may also reduce the urge to perform repeated tasks (compulsions such as hand-washing, counting, and checking) that interfere with daily living.   FDA Approval Date: 1992-12-29 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  Depression... No side effects unless I fail to take it in which hours later, I get irritated easily - for no reason. If I drink or eat anything containing aspartame, it cancels the benefits of Paxil. Before being prescribed Paxil, I tried talking with a psychologist, that did not work. I was so sad I could have walked away from everything.. Nothing was important to me.. I have never been suscidal nor wanted to hurt anyone... just very very sad. I believe I have always had depression; I was a very sad child and recall very little happiness - I cried a lot. Paxil makes me feel "normal". I still have sympathy for others, I have never had intimacy problems. I believe some people are on the med who should not be using it. F 73 20 years

3  General Anxiety Disorder Yawning, Extreme fatigue, Couldn't keep eyes open, Dizziness I had started taking this medicine whileI do still have some degree of anxiety but its helpful enough id keep taking it. I had worked for a company for almost 2 years, and within two weeks of taking paxil they had let me go. I strongly feel it was related to the start of this medicine, and the side effects it had on me while at work. I will say that I did not stop taking it and I'm able to take a shower by myself if I need to, I no longer have obsessive thoughts about things in my life, and have gotten a new job that ive been doing pretty good i'd say. I'm no longer getting easily irritated at work unless I miss doses. other than that I have not had withdrawl symptoms. I would not recommend taking starting to take this medicine if youre working because of what happened to me but everyone has different jobs and the side effect are different for different people 21 3 months

3  Migraine prophylactic, anxiety Was great for the first few years at limiting migraines and helping with some less concerning social anxiety. I have now gained over 50 lbs. I have tried for over a year to discontinue but cannot get down below 10 mg without disabling discontinuation syndrome. It is great for calming severe anxiety! Just beware, once you are on, you may never get off. F 35 6 years

1  Depression and Anxiety/OCD The usual when you start any SSRI with the additional problem of feeling angry and aggressive. I just couldn't handle the anger and aggression that came on so quick. I have heard it is hard to get off, so I quickly went off so I didn't have withdrawal to add to the anger and aggression! Everyone is different but I've noticed a couple of people on here say Celexa (also called Cipramil) was good for them. I am back on it now and relieved. Maybe try it if you have had a problem with Paxil. F 49 2 days

4  obsessive thoughts, depression Loss of most sexual feeling, complete loss of orgasm. Loss of appetite. Dry mouth, yawning. Sweating. So I've read 120 of these comments. To my relief,I see some weird things I have been experiencing are side effects not mentioned in PDR's. I've had a few scary dreams. This weird dizzy, whooshing feeling in my head and tingly in my body if I look in a different direction quickly. I have lost a little weight. My appetite is gone. I cannot have an orgasm to save my life. But overall, I feel so much better. The endless runaway train of horrible obsessional thoughts has stopped. I do feel a bit zombie-ish sometimes. I do feel like my moral sense has been lessened. I was ready to die, so I started on 20mg of paxil. The very next day I felt completely different. Overjoyed even. Of course the night I took my first pill was the last night I had an orgasm. Oh well my marriage sucks anyway so I don't really miss it that much. F 49 2 years

4  Anxiety disorder with panic Withdrawal comes within hours of not taking my daily dose, sweats, dizziness, feeling out of breath, etc. When I was first prescribed it took a while to not feel "brain dead" Has helped with my panic attacks and the feeling of anxiousness and urgency. I no longer over think every situation and I'm even able to concentrate on school and handle my course load now! Overrall I'm satisfied but the feeling you get when you're a few hours late taking it, is a damper. F 20 1 years

5  Anxiety Anxious / Ringing in ears / Inability to Orgasm / Sweats/Flashes / Brain Zaps / Irritability / Euphoria (good/bad) All of these side effects wore off within two weeks. Except, the ringing in the ears which stuck around about 6 months. The ability to orgasm got easier after a year and finally normalized out. If you want to stop this medication, which i have done a couple times over the 17 years, you have to ween your self off very slowly. I would cut the dosage incrementally, wait 2 weeks for the side effects to go away, and then cut again and repeat until i was off the med. If you don't do this, you WILL be SORRY. Stopping this med immediately is crazy. Cut your pills into 1/4 or even 1/8. Buy a cheap pill cutter. M 44 17 years

4  depression/anxiety burst of energy, then a few hours later started uncontrolled deep yawning. took nap. ate, went to bed, woke up sweating, out of body feeling. layed awake, wired til 5 in the morning, at which point i took a muscle relaxer(zanaflex) and went to sleep. woke 4 hours later feeling fine. also had uncontrolled diarrhea, which subsided by midnight. 2nd day, I'm gonna wait it out and see if side-effects subside with time.  4  Panic disorder, anxiety, OCD Slight dizziness upon first taking, sensitive to light, eye issues / blurred vision, weight gain ( was on 20MG and gained weight, on 10MG now and no weight gain., Orgasm / length of time to reach which can be a good thing. Weaning off is a little challenging, brain zaps, dizziness but I have come off of it three times, so it can be done. This med has helped a great deal with panic attacks, OCD, not so much for depression. I was off this med for two years, and felt it had almost cured me. Best Antidepressant I've ever been on, and I tried a few. GL to all. M 42 15 years

1  Panic disorder, anxiety, depression When I started taking Paxil 11 years ago it was a lifesaver for me. I was in a constant state of panic and couldn't calm myself down. Paxil really helped at first. But after a while I kept gaining weight and nothing would help me to lose it. My libido was gone. I never cried I felt numb and like I was just existing. Now with no insurance or Doctor to prescribe I was forced to taper fast. I am on day 17 of hell. Head zaps, nausea, vomiting, anger, crying, suicidal thoughts, headaches. I just feel like crawling in a hole. I was never warned of this. I am trying to stick it out instead of going back on and being fat with no sense of being. I never would recommend this not even to my worst enemy. I'm going to try Prozac as soon as I can get insurance. It has a longer half life and no severe withdrawal symptoms. F 30 10 years

4  Anxiety & Depression Complete lack of sex drive, some insomnia( could be caused by other things, too), Works really well on anxiety and pretty well on depression, but I feel numb - it's a lot better than heart pounding anxiety! It's just too bad that drugs aren't better! I'd love to get relief & still feel good- I'm currently tapering off as I've been on Paxil for so long, I'd like to see how I feel without. I also have a lot less stress. So far it's been uncomfortable, but ok- mainly headaches. F 53 5 years

3  Anxiety None that i have noticed I am upset that i was even prescribed this evil medicine. It has done away with the anxiety sonewhat but the cost of that is never sleeping, weight gain, no sex drive, emotionally disconnected. My wife thought i was seeing someone else. Absolutely no sex drive. Emotional state is like a zombie. I dont care about anything. I want to stop it. I hear its living hell to try to get off. Going to try anyway. I want my life back.  5  Depression and anxiety Initially insomnia, low sex drive, sleepiness. All of these disappeared after the first few weeks of treatment. I started on Paxil many years ago when I got depressed in my 20s. Depression was accompanied by severe anxiety and debilitating insomnia. Paxil literally restored me to life within days. I was feeling so good that after a year I decided to go off it in hopes that I will be able to keep my mood in control on my own. That was a mistake. Depression and anxiety came back with all the nasty symptoms. I got back on Paxil for another four years. After this I was able to go off it and actually did reasonably well for over a decade. Now I became depressed again-there are some major things going on in my life and a lot of stress. So I am back on Paxil. I will see how things go and for how long I will take it. I wanted to say that both times I was able to stop Paxil without any issues. I did it slowly, of course, but there were no withdrawal symptoms at all. It is definitely possible to get off it. Don't be afraid to take Paxil for a long period of time. It doesn't mean that you will have to take it for life. It also might be interesting for some people that I got pregnant, had a baby, and breastfed her for a year-all while on low dose of Paxil. My daughter was born healthy and happy, and breastfeeding went just fine. F 44 5 years

5  Panic Disorder/Anxiety I was at the end of my rope. Had tried Pamelor (Tri-cyclic) Prozac (SSRI) ANYWAY, at first the Paxil made me nauseous and dizzy but after about a week, my panic attacks STOPPED, and i napped every day, and was very sleepy. I was on .05mgs of Xanax at night also. I have been on Paxil (Paroxetine) for over TWENTY years. I am now 59. Combined with Xanax or Klonopin, it has been a great combination. Now, since I lost my job due to car problems, i, a former PROFESSIONAL am now on MEDI-CAL and have to see either a P.A. or N.P. the Physicians are TOO GOOD to see people on Medi-Cal apparently. Anyway, they are trying to stop my use ot Benzos. IF IT AINT BROKE, DON'T FIX IT. IT TERRIFIES ME TO THINK THAT MY MENTAL CARE IS BEING DICTATED BY THE GOVERNMENT. PAXIL has helped me in ways that i didn't know possible. It has also taken over my system. I will be on it for life. I tried weaning off it very slowly three times. All three times I CRASHED HARD. This is a LAST RESORT drug. I had tried natural alternatives first, everythng I can think of and nothing touched my Anxiety/Depression like PAXIL. BUT BE WARNED. Once you are on it six months or longer, plan on HORRIBLE WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS, OR INABILITY TO WITHDRAW AT ALL. F 59 23 years
