PAXIL  (PAROXETINE HYDROCHLORIDE):  Paroxetine is used to treat depression, panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder. It works by helping to restore the balance of a certain natural substance (serotonin) in the brain. Paroxetine is known as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). This medication may improve your mood, sleep, appetite, and energy level and may help restore your interest in daily living. It may decrease fear, anxiety, unwanted thoughts, and the number of panic attacks. It may also reduce the urge to perform repeated tasks (compulsions such as hand-washing, counting, and checking) that interfere with daily living.   FDA Approval Date: 1992-12-29 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  Panic Disorder & Depression NONE! My doctor prescribed me Paxil 10mg for panic disorder, agoraphobia and depression. Zero side effects which had been a massive relief because of the horror stories I’ve read from other patients online. I am now on 20mg three months after being prescribed 10mg. I cannot even explain to anyone in words how life-changing this medicine has been for me. While not being anti-medicine, I’ve never been one who jumps to a pill for every little thing. However, the anxiety and panic and depression had become so severe that I finally mustered up the courage to go to my doctor for help. The best decision of my entire life. I tried natural remedy after natural remedy for years and nothing has come close to paxil. Please consider giving this medicine a try if your doctor feels it’s a right fit for you. Don’t let all the horror stories online scare you away from something that could really change your life! If not paxil, there are many other options! I was just blessed enough to have an amazing experience on the first SSRI prescribed to me. I do not take it for granted and I thank God for such a positive experiment. I have amazing energy, positivity, no more doom and gloom, no more feeling like my world is closing in or like i’m on the being on a panic attack any second. I could go on and on. I am SO thankful.  5  Depression, Anxiety, Chronic Pain I have taken many different antidepressants and this was the best one. It really helped with anxiety and occasional depression. I’m not sure if it helped with pain, but it helped me cope with my condition. I was thankful that any sexual side effects wore off pretty quickly, too. The other anti-depressants I’ve taken have either not been tolerable or they were effective, but the benefits wore off in a year or so. Paxxl was amazing because it worked for so long. Gradually I began gaining weight, feeling fatigued most of the time and a bit emotionless. I quit and started something else, but I’d definitely try this is you have depression and anxiety mixed. I was worried about quitting because there are so many horror stories on here, but I tapered off very quickly and it was fine. Some headaches and sweaty for a few days- then done. Believe me I have experienced some tough withdrawal side effects with other meds. This was easy for me, but know everyone experiences meds differently. F 55 12 years

5  Depression... No side effects unless I fail to take it in which hours later, I get irritated easily - for no reason. If I drink or eat anything containing aspartame, it cancels the benefits of Paxil. Before being prescribed Paxil, I tried talking with a psychologist, that did not work. I was so sad I could have walked away from everything.. Nothing was important to me.. I have never been suscidal nor wanted to hurt anyone... just very very sad. I believe I have always had depression; I was a very sad child and recall very little happiness - I cried a lot. Paxil makes me feel "normal". I still have sympathy for others, I have never had intimacy problems. I believe some people are on the med who should not be using it. F 73 20 years

5  Anxiety Anxious / Ringing in ears / Inability to Orgasm / Sweats/Flashes / Brain Zaps / Irritability / Euphoria (good/bad) All of these side effects wore off within two weeks. Except, the ringing in the ears which stuck around about 6 months. The ability to orgasm got easier after a year and finally normalized out. If you want to stop this medication, which i have done a couple times over the 17 years, you have to ween your self off very slowly. I would cut the dosage incrementally, wait 2 weeks for the side effects to go away, and then cut again and repeat until i was off the med. If you don't do this, you WILL be SORRY. Stopping this med immediately is crazy. Cut your pills into 1/4 or even 1/8. Buy a cheap pill cutter. M 44 17 years

5  Depression and anxiety Initially insomnia, low sex drive, sleepiness. All of these disappeared after the first few weeks of treatment. I started on Paxil many years ago when I got depressed in my 20s. Depression was accompanied by severe anxiety and debilitating insomnia. Paxil literally restored me to life within days. I was feeling so good that after a year I decided to go off it in hopes that I will be able to keep my mood in control on my own. That was a mistake. Depression and anxiety came back with all the nasty symptoms. I got back on Paxil for another four years. After this I was able to go off it and actually did reasonably well for over a decade. Now I became depressed again-there are some major things going on in my life and a lot of stress. So I am back on Paxil. I will see how things go and for how long I will take it. I wanted to say that both times I was able to stop Paxil without any issues. I did it slowly, of course, but there were no withdrawal symptoms at all. It is definitely possible to get off it. Don't be afraid to take Paxil for a long period of time. It doesn't mean that you will have to take it for life. It also might be interesting for some people that I got pregnant, had a baby, and breastfed her for a year-all while on low dose of Paxil. My daughter was born healthy and happy, and breastfeeding went just fine. F 44 5 years

5  Panic Disorder/Anxiety I was at the end of my rope. Had tried Pamelor (Tri-cyclic) Prozac (SSRI) ANYWAY, at first the Paxil made me nauseous and dizzy but after about a week, my panic attacks STOPPED, and i napped every day, and was very sleepy. I was on .05mgs of Xanax at night also. I have been on Paxil (Paroxetine) for over TWENTY years. I am now 59. Combined with Xanax or Klonopin, it has been a great combination. Now, since I lost my job due to car problems, i, a former PROFESSIONAL am now on MEDI-CAL and have to see either a P.A. or N.P. the Physicians are TOO GOOD to see people on Medi-Cal apparently. Anyway, they are trying to stop my use ot Benzos. IF IT AINT BROKE, DON'T FIX IT. IT TERRIFIES ME TO THINK THAT MY MENTAL CARE IS BEING DICTATED BY THE GOVERNMENT. PAXIL has helped me in ways that i didn't know possible. It has also taken over my system. I will be on it for life. I tried weaning off it very slowly three times. All three times I CRASHED HARD. This is a LAST RESORT drug. I had tried natural alternatives first, everythng I can think of and nothing touched my Anxiety/Depression like PAXIL. BUT BE WARNED. Once you are on it six months or longer, plan on HORRIBLE WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS, OR INABILITY TO WITHDRAW AT ALL. F 59 23 years

5  depression and anxiety Still have first two, but no more dry mouth and no constipation. Note my comments are based on having been on this med for one year. It has been a great help to me. I was suffering enormously from depression and anxiety, especially the latter. I wanted to be dead, just to stop feeling, but was too distressed to even think about suicide. And this drug has helped. I understand it's difficult to get off of, but I've discussed strategies with my psychiatrist, so I'm not worried. In fact, I'll never get off of it if it continues to work. I'd been on Prozac for 18 years, until it finally "pooped" out. M 67 1 years

5  PTSD, Anxiety Disorder, Agoraphobia Appetite Increase, nausea if not taken with food, takes about 4 times longer to orgasm than when not on the medication For the last nine years, I was trapped inside my home with severe panic attacks. I had severe avoidance problems. I needed help from people to get groceries, wouldn't go to doctor appointments and struggled with suicidal thoughts. Before Paxil, I tried many medications that did not work. If I take my Paxil, the dark thoughts and fears go away and I am able to leave my home, and have even started driving a car again. I have even applied to college, which I would never have dreamed of doing before I started taking Paxil. My quality of life has greatly improved. The downside is that it makes me extremely hungry all of the time, so I must always be munching on low calorie foods, like carrot sticks or bell pepper slices, to alleviate that symptom.  5  GAD Strange sensation sometimes when I look in a different direction/turn my head quickly. Also weird "electric" feelings in my feet at times when I am walking. Lex gave me some really good initiative and drive, but Pax has increased it along with adding assertiveness (in a good way!) Started on Lexapro 10mg 9 months ago and then Dr. increased to 20mg 3 months ago to help with continuing panic symptoms. I started having hypnic twitches and was absolutely unable to orgasm although it gave me LOTS of libido back. In retrospect, I must have had a bit of depression as well so the Lex helped that and made me a regular horny dude again. :-) On Paxil now 3 weeks and was tired for the first couple of weeks, but now I feel better than I have in recent memory. Jaw clenching is going away and I am able to orgasm (woot-WOOT!!!) With that an my recent vasectomy, Wifey and I are having some MAJOR fun I can tell you - I feel like a newlywed again. I did ask my Dr. about coming off the Pax in the future if it helped me. He said that he used to be worried about long-term use, but now with the years of first-hand observation he came to the conclusion that if it is giving you a happy "normal" life then why stop at all. The way I feel now, I tend to agree. I'm interested to hear other men's experiences of switching from Lex to Pax. Please drop me a line! PS - I would like to say that I am appalled with all the news-making tragedies that have happened (SC shooter, German Wings pilot, CT shooter, Columbine, etc.) for young men taking SSRI's. If you are in your 20s or younger, I am BEGGING you to man-up and question your doctor as to why they are prescribing you SSRI's with all of the research that shows it to be potentially DEADLY for young men.  5  Depression & Anxiety Always Sleepy After taking this drug for four years, I feel like giving my personal input to this wonderful website which gave me a lot of useful information. I would say I am extremely grateful to paxil. Before 2011, I was functioning OK but was at the same time manifesting some symptoms which looking back were actually the symptoms of depression. In April 2011, I had a major bout of depression and was almost unable to sit through my daily job and live a normal life. I was sleepy, tired, sore all over my body and have bowel problems, fever-like symptoms. I almost thought I was dying. After a whole series of medical check, it was eventually clear to me that I had depression. My doctor prescribed Paxil 10mg for daily intake. I felt much better after staying on the drug for about one month but at the same time suffered from a host of side effects such as low sex drive, sleepiness, emotional detachment. The low sex drive went away after some time but sleepiness never disappeared. But overall, on paxil I was eating healthy, exercising everyday and had a positive outlook for life. During the process, I switched to Zoloft once for about 2 months, only to find that Zoloft had almost the same effect but put a whole lot of weight on me (which is all fat). With 10mg paxil and exercise, I was always in good shape. This made me determined to turn back to 10mg paxil again. For those with depression, paxil is something that may help you find a way out.  5  Anxiety / Depression I have taken 10 mg for 10 years with no side effects. After the death of my father, my doctor increased the dose to 40 mg - within a few days I had no libido and shaking like I was going to have a panic attack. I reduced down to 20 mg and the shaking went away in 2 days. It works for me. No weight gain like others have experienced. F 45 10 years

5  Depression & Anxiety Dizziness, Sleepiness As with any drug, you have to decide if the benefit outweighs the side effects. Paxil is the ONLY drug that helped me with my EXTREME agitation. It was a feeling like I had super PMS or something. Currently, I take Paxil and Wellbutrin both. The Wellbutrin takes some of that sleepy feeling away. Then I got diagnosed with Narcolepsy and take Provigil and Adderall. That definitely takes the sleepy away. My only complaints would be: 1. It has a very short half life, therefore, if I miss a dose, I feel psycho pretty fast. 2. There should be a big fat warning about the withdrawal symptoms if you try to stop. They are horrible. Regardless of the sedated feeling I get from it, I wouldn't trade it for anything! F 44 20 years

5  Depression Emotionless, withdrawls when missed, sweating, anxiety, weight gain this has been a life-saver for me but has also been my worst enemy. Most days i just feel numb like i have no emotion at all, i'm not happy or sad i'm just getting on with life. The worst side effect for me would be anxiety. I find it hard to leave the house a lot and i can't be around a lot of people. I gained a lot of weight so thats another downside F 26 8 years

5  Depression, anxiety, PTSD Initially, and with each increase I had nausea and itchy for about two weeks. Sweating, even the bottom of my feet. Bizarre dreams. I have lost 25 pounds since starting this medication. Started 10mg one month later moved to 20mg. 3 months later moved to 30mg and after a very bad episode of depression I've arrived at 40mg taken every morning. I cannot explain how good it is to be able to sleep at night, make simple decisions again like what to make for dinner or which brand of mustard to buy, or to pay my bills on time! I have missed a dose without any side effects. I was going to tell my doctor that I wanted to start decreasing my dose because I felt so much better now, when I realized that the Paxil is why I was feeling better. First let me say I know Paxil saved my life. I HATE medicine of any kind, very much into clean eating and natural remedies. 5 years ago I started this dark downward spiral into hell. My doctor tried to get me to start taking something to help. I refused. Last year, I was to the point that I couldn't even get dressed for work (what should I wear???). I wanted to die and only knowing my kids and grandkids then would think that killing yourself was an acceptable solution, kept me from committing suicide. She suggested Paxil and I have since thanked her for saving my life. F 57 9 months

5  Panic disorder w/ agoraphobia Weight gain Before Paxil I could not leave my house due to agoraphobia brought on by Panic Disorder. After Paxil, I could go anywhere. I had no side effects but I did gain about 70 pounds on it, although I was also eating more because I was happy. After 2 years, I no longer felt I needed to be on it and quit cold turkey. Unlike others, I suffered no withdrawal and have been off of it for a year. My panic attacks have not returned and I am now stable and functioning. I am thankful for Paxil getting me over that bridge to recovery. It was exactly what I needed and I'm saddened some people want this taken off the market for the withdrawals--I had none and this drug saved me from a life of being cooped up in my house.
