PRILOSEC  (OMEPRAZOLE):  Omeprazole is used to treat certain stomach and esophagus problems (such as acid reflux, ulcers). It works by decreasing the amount of acid your stomach makes. It relieves symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and persistent cough. This medication helps heal acid damage to the stomach and esophagus, helps prevent ulcers, and may help prevent cancer of the esophagus. Omeprazole belongs to a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).   FDA Approval Date: 1998-01-15 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Acid reflux Dizzy spells, weakness, feel sick, trouble breathing, poor circulation, orthostatic issues (when i stand heart races), dangerously low iron, sweating, brain fog, burning and tingling in legs and feet, lost muscle mass, anxiety, high resting heart rate, palpitations, feels like my heart is barely beating, insomnia, hot and cold sweats, high and low blood pressure, food sensitivities/allergies, immense pressure in head, stiff neck (extremely painful), back pain, abdominal pain, chest pain. All this time I thought I had POTs (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) but began to realize every time i take PPI’s i get these symptoms. I’ve stopped Prilosec. Slowly getting better but still feel HORRIBLE. Why does this medication do this? How do you reverse it? Please email me. F 17 7 days

1  Heartburn Severe stress and anxiety, confusion, crying over everything, headache, stomach pain, racing heart, fatigue, sweating. HORRIBLE!! It got rid of heartburn but the side effects were bad. On the 3rd day I started stressing really bad over everything and having severe anxiety as well. Heart would race and pound and crying wouldn't stop. Almost ended up going to the er when I decided to not take prilosec anymore. I started feeling better after 2 days but not feeling 100%. Anxiety attacks are still happening. F 40 7 days

1  heartburn High anxiety, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, fatigue, depression, mental fog, insomnia, disassociation, loss of appetite I had a bad reaction to Prilosec OTC. I took it in the mornings, before breakfast, for 7 days until I realized it is causing me issues. Starting around the 3rd day I began feeling more stressed and my heartrate was up to ~100 from 70, which is my normal resting heartrate. On the fourth day I had to drive for 2 hours and felt on the edge the whole time, pulse was 130. I recognized anxiety and set up a call with a psychiatrist to help me. I never had this before (or since). On the 7th day I realized that it might be the Prilosec, found others complaining and I stopped taking it immediately. The side effects took me around 2 months and a half to clear. The first 2-3 weeks were the worst, with many anxiety attacks and some depression. I also started waking up a lot at night, 7-10 times per night. The anxiety started to come and go, but took approx 8 weeks until I had the last attack. Insomnia took a bit longer to clear. I took vitamins (B complex, D), minerals (magnesium, calcium) and supplements (valerian root, pepsin HCl), pushed myself to exercise (run), but not really sure that these helped. Blood tests looked fine. My GP had another patient with same symptoms at the same time as me, but never heard of such effects before. There are recent studies that indicate a link (search for "Elevated anxiety, hypoactivity, memory deficits, decreases of brain serotonin and 5-HT-1A receptors expression in rats treated with omeprazole"), but unfortunately no actionable remedy/suggestion M 34 7 days

1  Too much stomach acid, IBS, hernia I have always had stomach issues. I was having an IBS flare up and my doctor ran some tests. I had 7 ulcers, gastritis, and bloody stools. I was prescribed this medication to reduce stomach acid. On the second day I started having headaches and heartburn, which I hadn't felt in years. My appetite was shot. I was basically surviving off oranges. It made my diarrhea worse and the most painful gas set in. Can't sleep or if I do it's brief. Constantly thirsty and frequent urination. I started having heart palpitations, muscle weakness and pain, brain fog.... It's been total hell. I ended up feeling way worse then I ever felt beforehand. Please be very cautious if you choose to take it. Ask for another option if you start having these issues. F 47 7 days

1  gas, heartburn anxiety, anusea, rapid heart rate, depression, dry, sour taste in mouth I had heartburn started two weeks ago. I started taking Omeprazole and was on it for 4 days. I felt weak, sour taste, and dry mouth. I thought it was because too much acid and the medication did not help, so I went to the doctor. She did test and found I had H. Pylori. I almost never had stomach pain, but I decided to take the PREVPAC, the following 4 days were like hell to me. I developed very bad acid reflux and I think it had burned my throat. The PPI comes with PREVPAC doesn't help at all. I went to a G.I doctor who gave me AcipHex (another PPI). It did control my acid reflux (part of reason is I stopped the prevpac too). But I still have fast heart rate and anxiety. Until I read this page, I realize I just had mild heartburn and gas before and all my "sickness" was started after I started Omeprazole. I guess I just can not tolerate all PPI. Now I have stopped all the medication, and I feel much better F 36 7 days

1  gastrointestinal pain, extreme acid I didn't attribute this drug to these side effects, but now that I've read this review it's all making sense... *muscle soreness (as if I'd had an intense workout or was beat up...neither of which was the case); *muscle cramping/contractions (3 days non-stop on right leg...I almost thought I was going to have to see a neurologist); *extreme fatigue; *inability to sleep (or when I did sleep I woke up at least 3 times a night...mind you I cut out ALL caffeine during this period); *lightheaded/dizziness (when I'd get up after sitting); *shortness of breath (as if I was extremely overweight and every action required a lot of expended energy); *unquenchable thirst (as if I was diabetic); *irritable/highly annoyed/mad/upset at the world for NO apparent reason (worse than anything that could be expected from PMS) All of these symptoms were experienced after only ONE week on this thing. After encountering this site, I am definitely discontinuing my use of this drug. The fact that it' F 24 7 days

1  acid reflux Within 3 days I was having a racing heart, hard time breathing and chest pains. After being on it a week, I went off and it took exactly a week for the symptoms to completely disappear. I thought I was going crazy and it scared the crap out of me. My doctor didn't think my symptoms were a reaction to the drug, but I am convinced and grateful I stopped taking it when I did. F 41 7 days

1  GERD Severe abdominal pain and bloating. I thought I had flu or maybe food poisoning. Headache, depression, dizzines and weakness. After I concluded that it wasn't food poisoning I stopped taking it. Its now three days later and while my symptoms are subsiding, I am still not back to normal. M 62 7 days

1  chest pressure, lump in throat Stomach pain, gnawing chest pain I can't believe that digestive pain is a side effect of PPI drugs created to help digestive problems. Continued to take this for a week thinking my condition was worsening before switching to Protonix which was worse. F 49 7 days

1  Gastro-Intenstinal Problems Fatigue, tightness of chest, anxiety, general weakness, stomach problems, sexual dysfunction (male) My transplant clinic threw these pills at me to help me control the side effects of CellCept, which gives me terrible stomach problems now and then. My problems were NOT acid reflux related, and I was prescribed this even though I told them so. After being on this drug for a week I noticed that whenever I would play soccer for my team I would become winded and totally exhausted within only a few minutes of exertion. At first, I thought this was because of a new diet and weight training regimen that I had started. however, when I accidentally skipped a dose, I outpaced my entire soccer team the next day. needless to say, I came home and threw out the prescription. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICATION UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED IT. the worst part is that my doctors refused to help me get a medical marijuana card (I am in oregon) despite my persistent requests. I knew that marijuana cured the problems that I was having, but instead they decided to throw this horrible drug at me rather than consid M 18 7 days

1  GERD Headache, bad abdominal pain, lethargy, feeling generally like crap. I took prescription Prilosec a few years ago, and don't recall having these side effects.  1  Thought I had acid reflux/gastritis Increased GI problems, increased anxiety/depression I'm sure this drug is fine for those who actually have upper GI/acid problems. However, there needs to be more information out there with regards to its effect on mental health. To all of those experiencing anxiety/depression and all of the related symptoms (panic attacks, chest pains, numbness/tingling, tinnitus, heart palpitations, high blood pressure, insomnia, night sweats, vivid dreams, brain fog, nausea, dizziness, the list goes on..) please consider that we as a society are on the verge of a mental health crisis. You may be experiencing upper GI distress as a direct result of teetering on the edge of depression. Taking this medication reduces your body's ability to absorb nutrients (particularly B-complex vitamins) that it uses to synthesize the chemicals in your brain. As a result, you can very quickly slip into a deep depression that you might have otherwise avoided. I know this is hard to accept for some people. (There is no shame in depression. It's a chemical imbalance in your brain and it happens to nearly everyone at some point. Unfortunately it also compromises our ability to think clearly about our health among other things.) My experience was over a year ago. It took me 3 months to accept that it was depression/anxiety and nearly a year to recover. If you are interested in hearing more about my experience, feel free to email. Otherwise, please consider this as a possible explanation to what you are experiencing and talk to your doctor/therapist about it. M 35 7 days

1  Acid reflux/hiatal hernia Burning and stabbing traveling stomach pains, light-headed feeling, tingling in left leg and foot, headaches, shoulder/trapezius pain, feeling odd, feeling like I had some kind of horrible disease, gas, bloating, lack of energy, gained 5 pounds I was diagnosed w/small hiatal hernia in 2003. Rarely need to treat it with meds since I work out daily (28 years) and eat very a very healthy diet. After some "bad" eating during the fall and over holidays had some hiatal hernia pain. Took 2 weeks of generic prilosec in January and thought I was feeling bad due to some kind of flu/virus. Finished 2 weeks and then felt fine. Then started again 7 days ago after some reflux and felt horrible right away. I found this site today and already feel better after reading all the comments. I generally feel great and positive, love to work out, have a lot of energy and sleep well. This week has been a nightmare. I threw out the pills today. F 55 7 days
