Finally got a test for SIBO and it allowed bacteria overgrowth in my small intestines which is why I have felt sick on and off it. It destroys the acid in your stomach which keeps the bad bacteria controlled. Side effects came on slowly. The first to really become noticable after about 10 days was the feeling of being choked or having a lump in my throat. My Dr dismissed this as anxiety. Looking back I should have quit taking this medication when that particular sensation started. But I kept taking it and eventually ordered a scope because I had felt terrible for almost a month. After the scope showed my stomach and esophagus were normal I quit taking the Prilosec. I also discovered dairy was causing my original issues so I was on this medication for nothing. In fact I began to realize it was the thing making me feel sick. I quit cold turkey because I needed this poison out of my body as soon as possible. I didn't think the withdrawal would be as bad as taking the medication but I researched this medication and prepared myself for the worst. The last two weeks have been a literal hell getting through withdrawal. I don't think it's quite over yet but thankfully I am starting to see a reduction in the withdrawal symptoms (which have been the same as the side effects but more intense). I'm still dealing with some stomach pain, nausea, dizziness and shaking two weeks after taking the last dose but I feel more like myself and my head is clearer than it has been in weeks. The rebound acid is also pretty terrible but it has already improved and I'm managing by snacking frequently and taking Tums when needed.
