NORVASC  (AMLODIPINE BESYLATE):  Amlodipine is used with or without other medications to treat high blood pressure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. Amlodipine belongs to a class of drugs known as calcium channel blockers. It works by relaxing blood vessels so blood can flow more easily. Amlodipine is also used to prevent certain types of chest pain (angina). It may help to increase your ability to exercise and decrease the frequency of angina attacks. It should not be used to treat attacks of chest pain when they occur. Use other medications (such as sublingual nitroglycerin) to relieve attacks of chest pain as directed by your doctor.   FDA Approval Date: 1992-07-31 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  Hypertension Swelling of my ankles and feet, sometimes to the point of it being quite painful. I switched over to Norvasc from Atenolol. The atenolol just wasn't getting my blood pressure down. We initially put me on 5mg of Norvasc, but it didn't do much, so we upped it to 10. I've been on 10mg now for a bit over a month and am noticing severe swelling of my lower legs, ankles, and feet. I'll be going to my doctor soon to see if there's another option out there for me, the swelling's really inhibiting my ability to do all the sports I love. F 33 60 days

4  High Blood Pressure swelling of feet I am always amazed that when people experience side effects of drugs, it just means it is not right for them and they change to something else or live with the side effects. NOT take it OFF the MARKET as some people put in their comments. I have tried several BP drugs and each have side effects. Some I had to stop (clonidine for example) as I could not deal with the side effects. Right now I am on norvasc and Micardis. The norvasc does lower my pressure but not to the degree I am dizzy. Yes it does cause swelling. I am also on HCT which helps with that. I went off of it for about 1 month to try other meds but the side effects were much worse with them so I told my doc forget it I will go back to the Norvasc. At least I can fuction very well and exercise on the meds I am taking now. F 54 11 months

4  Hypertension I have only been on the drug for 2 weeks. The first few days I experienced fatigue. After about a week, I feel much better. I am on 5mg of the generic and it has lowered my pressure. I know Norvasc side effects are dose related in that people have less problems at lower doses. I know that the most common side effects with this drug are edema of the lower extremities and gum problems. Sexual disfunction in men is rarely reported with this drug. If it were, I would not be taking it. My experience has been that side effects usually appear soon after starting the drug. I have read many of the comments here and certainly they scare the hell out of me. I would like to know a little more about the various health problems of the others who posted here because it does not give us a clear picture as to why certain side effects happen. Some of the posts indicated being on the drug for many, many years. Therefore I cannot understand how a person can remain on the drug for that length of time and not do anything about it. It makes somebody like me very skeptical which is why I need to know more. I have no health problems other than gout since I was 21 and now hypertension. I have avoided BP medications for years by trying to keep my weight down, exercise and avoid foods M 46 2 weeks

4  high blood pressure I have been taking Norvasc since 1995. It has kept my blood pressure normal all this time. I have had weight gain over the years and have tried to get the weight off, but it is very difficult. I do believe the Norvasc is partially responsible for this. I just started a new bottle and now my lower legs and feet have swelled up with fluid. This happened to me in the past once. I am giving the new bottle of pills a chance for the next week. If I am still having this swelling, I will see my internist to have him check me out and I may have to go on another bp medicine as I cannot deal with this. I already have bad knees and this makes it all the more difficult to walk. I have read some of the other reactions people have had, and I also have muscle weekness, tiredness, muscle pain and muscle twitching. These can also be signs of other medical conditions, however now I am wondering if it has been the Norvasc all along. Don't know what I would take instead as I am allergic to ACE inhibitors.  4  hypertension swollen feet and ankles, esczema type itching on back of hands and forearms, distended stomach, mild depression (whether this is the drug, or not, i cannot be sure). i am using amlodipine which, i believe, is the generic version. it lowered my bp from 150/100 to about 120/80 on a 10mg tab once a day together with 5 mg tab of hydrochlorithiazide. i give amlodipine a 4 because it helped with the bp... but i am not at all happy with the side effects. am gearing up for a diet and exercise regimin to see if i can knock the dosage down or cut it completely.  4  High BP All the usual ones people complain about, but the ankle swelling was rather severe. Been on it for some years but recent times have seen the onset of Osteo Arthritis and for that I take Ibuprofen (Motril) which has made the leg swelling much worse. My doc thought that i was in the early stages of heart failure and some time was spent rather anxiously waiting for a heart echo cardiogram but that told me that all was well and that it was in fine condition. My pharmacist said that i was taking the two worst drugs to cause that, ankle swelling that is!.. Well I decided to ask my GP to see if something else was available and for the last couple of weeks I've been on Exforge which is a combination of Amlodpine (Norvasc) and Valsarten (Diovan) the Amlodpine content is down from 10 to 5 mg and thus far i seem to be having less side effects and the gum swelling has abated somewhat and so has the ankle swelling. We still have some side effects but I think that some drugs suit some people better then others. Side effects will always be with us in one form or another. BP has also reduced somewhat!. Still better than the murderous headaches that high BP gave me. So perhaps try more than the one drug in combination?... M 57 8 years

4  migraine prevention more energy/less fatigue throughout day. experienced more restful sleep in shorter periods of time. general feeling of well-being/elevated mood. It seemed to really help reduce the amount of migraines I have. I still have severe ones, but less of them. 2 a week instead of four or five. I even went a whole week without having one at all. I also have noticed a remarkable difference in the chronic daily headache I've learned to live with. It's gone! I haven't had any bad side effects. My blood pressure is consistently 120/80, so I'm not sure if that makes a difference. I'm less tired, and six hours of sleep is actually enough to make me feel rested. Weird side effect, but I can live with it. It seems to be working. F 31 1 months

4  Very high blood pressure Swelling of ankles and lower legs Blood Pressure went from 220/120 to 122/67 in ten days. I experienced no other negative effects and I feel great. Part of the reason I am feeling better is that I'm not worried about those high blood pressure readings any more! F 63 10 days

4  BP Depression, Low motivation, Pounding Heart I stopped Norvasc for about two weeks while I tried Lisinopril. Prior to this I had been on Norvasc for two years with fair results 128/84. I can't tell if the horrible side effects of lisinopril are lingering or if my body is now rejecting the norvasc. Currently, I am trying to determine if these side effects are from the generic version or a rejection. I started back on Norvasc with the generic, but am currently trying the Brand name as to see if I can stop the depression. M 32 2 years

4  Hypertension I have experienced dry cough and nasal congestion. I also started having unusual dreams. I was prescribed the generic version and it has worked. My BP was running about 135/90 after being on Cardiziem for 5 years and my doctor advised she wanted to try something different. So far so good. I also take my meds at night and it last all day long.  4  High Blood Pressure I've been taking Norvasc for 10 months and had little side effects until recently when I started getting swollen feet every night, upset stomach, flu like symptoms and pain in my legs. Turns out that it is the generic brand AMLODIPINE is causing these effects. Do not take generic stuff, no matter what they tell you. Pay a little more and get NORVASC, it your health..your biggest wealth. F 37 10 months

4  Hypertension Swelling in my legs and hands. The first couple of weeks after I started taking it I felt very weak and listless, almost like a depression. I just didn't feel like doing anything. I wanted to sleep a lot. After continuing to take it, these symptoms went away fairly quickly and never returned. Norvasc controlled my BP wonderfully for over 5 years, until I gained some weight and needed an increased dosage. I ended up having to add HCTZ and potassium to my med regimen because of the swelling Norvasc caused. It was a great med though. I've since lost a lot of weight and no longer take any of it. It worked well for me. Just expect some swelling. F 36 6 years

4  Hypertension regaining lost weight 6 weeks ago my blood pressure rose to 260/180 and I was admitted to CCU for observation. After a number of meds, I am currently on Caduet (10/40 Norvasc and Lipitor), 320 Diovan and 50 HCTZ since Friday. My BP is at about 150/95 and I feel good but I am hoping to get it down further and stop regaining weight. M 50 16 days

4  high blood pressure, RSD headaches, lightheadedness, constant erections My pressure actually dropped too much making me very sluggish and confused. Lower dose resolved that. Helps with circulation for RSD (reflex sympathetic dystrophy). Spontaneous erections throughout the day, much more sensitive to touch down there. M 40 4 months
