PROMETRIUM  (PROGESTERONE):  Progesterone is a type of female hormone (progestin). This medication is similar to the progesterone that your body naturally makes and is given to replace the hormone when your body is not making enough of it. In women who are not pregnant and not going through menopause, this medication is used to restore normal menstrual periods that have stopped for several months (amenorrhea). Progesterone is also used as part of combination hormone replacement therapy with estrogens to reduce menopause symptoms (e.g., hot flashes). Progesterone is added to estrogen replacement therapy to reduce the risk of cancer of the uterus. This medication is not for use in children. Progesterone must not be used to test for pregnancy.   FDA Approval Date: 1999-10-15 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  No longer producing progesterone Tender breasts, oily skin, drowsiness, calmness, helps with cramps, shorter periods, My body was no longer producing progesterone which caused headaches at the same time every day, hot flashes, night sweats, and insomnia. Prometrium has fixed all of these issues! So thankful for this! I had tried synthetic progesterone (aygestin) which was too strong for me but this plant-based version is just right! F 28 3 months

3  HRT/Hot Flashes I want to ~thank~ the person who posted here about using a sterilized pin to puncture the capsule and apply Prometrium topically. CAUTION: You'd think that oral delivery would give you more medication than topical creams, but I've read it's the opposite: topical creams go straight to the blood, delivering MORE. For that reason, I apply a tinyyy dab of the 100 mg on my inner arm now and get the same relief with fewer side effects! Side effects when I took ORAL capsules (100 mg at bedtime): Serious drowsiness (sleeping half of the morning away), weight gain, BLOATING, and lack of focus/memory impairment. Side effects with TOPICAL application: NO bloating (stomach flattening within a few days), overall better feeling, improved focus, NO more drowsiness in the morning!! F 52 1.5 years

Patient History
1  Perimenopause Nausea, dizziness, feeling like I was drunk or stoned, blurred vision The worst medicine I have ever taken. Was prescribed 200mg. Ended up in ER due to almost passing out from the nausea. and dizziness. Didn't eat or sleep for two days after that. Lowered my dose to 100 mg. Still felt nausea and out of it. Helped my anxiety, but the side effects not worth it. F 52 4 days

1  hormone replacement menopause Can't believe soy was added to this med. If allergies and thyroid aren't on the rise as it is. Had a horrible experience didn't even tell me there was soy in it when I filled it last!Liked the older formula much better. So sorry they had to go and change this formula. I think it would be more profitable to be changed back to the original formula there are many generics with soy in them. Thats why people were willing to pay for brand . NO SOY. F 58 10 years

5  estrogen dominance At first I didn't like this drug, when I took it orally. The side effects were headache and it didn't really help much. I then applied it topically. I poked a hole & applied it on my skin (half at night and half in the morning). This was the answer. I am hypothyroid and estrogen dominant, which meant that estrogen was impeding the uptake of thyroid. This resulted in awful thyroid fatigue, aches, overall low feeling. With the Prometrium I feel happy, more energy, no more thyroid aches, and able to function. This is awesome. I have felt awful for so long and have my life back. F 54 28 days

3   Night sweats, fatigue, PMS symptoms. I use bioidentical estradiol and testosterone. Since I have my uterus I must also use progesterone to prevent endometrial cancer. I use Pometrium for 12 days, every second or third month. It causes night sweats, sleepiness and fatigue, bloating, and PMS symptoms. When the 12 days are over, I get a mild period and start feeling better quickly. It serves its purpose, but I don't love how it makes me feel. My doctor suggested inserting the capsules vaginally to reduce the symptoms (oral meds must be processed via the liver, creating metabolites which worsen side-effects). This does reduce the severity, but doesn't eliminate them. F 48

3  Short luteal phase/ttc Dizziness and drowsiness which wasn't a big deal since it was taken at bedtime. Minor mood swings which could also be related to impending period. I was put on it to lengthen my luteal phase. I would start spotting 6-7 days past ovulation. The only thing progesterone supplements did was lengthen it by two days. On 9 days past ovulation, I began spotting again anyways. F 36 9 days

4  Heavy, irregular bleeding, perimenopause Day1: very tired Day 2: fatigue, headache, drowsy, VERY vivid odd dreams, nausea Day 3: I debated whether or not to stop - read all reviews here and decided to try it one more night since it's a weekend and I only have 5 total pills. I changed what I did based on what one other user reported and took it with an entire glass of water. I don't know if that is what did the trick, but I woke up feeling AMAZING!! I still had the vivid dreams and also now have some breast tenderness, but no drowsy, fatigue, headache or nausea. I feel almost euphoric and at total peace. I will take it again tonight and should I need to update this review, I will. F 43 3 days

1  Not menstruating/Not menopausal Had no side effects for first 6 days, then had stroke-like (TIA) symptoms. Blurred-vision, loss of balance, muscle weakness, inability to walk or talk, complete fog. Didn't know why. Took Prometrium on day 7-nothing. Day 8-same stroke-like symptoms. Stopped taking med, haven't had any other episodes. Unfortunately, those symptoms are listed as an severe allergic reaction. F 47 8 days

4  My uterine lining is too thick Extreme drunk like feeling, dizzy...take it before bed time. Got up to use the bathroom and walked straight into our bookcase. This medication should have a warning on the label to not drive or operate heavy machinery. Take it before bedtime. F 40 10 days

5  Perimenopause Indigestion, drowsiness, leg pain. Was prescribed 200mg but started off taking half that dose (100mg). I was getting maybe 4-6 hours of broken sleep every night, horrible night sweats, insomnia, irritability, foggy brain. Since taking Prometrium I am sleeping like a baby! It's AMAZING! I take it 30 min before bed and I'm up in the morning feeling refreshed and energetic. Hot flashes are gone. I was 3-5 lbs overweight (I am 5'3 and weighed 126 which was heavy for my frame) and I'm down 4 lbs in 2 months. No bloating. Hair is nice and thick. I swear this medication is a Godsend for me. I had a tubal ligature after my 3rd child at 32 and I haven't felt this good since before I had kids. Seems like the issue is really hitting the right dose. Taking 200 mg gave me bad indigestion and leg cramps. Since I lowered the dose it seems to be perfect. Also I think you need to give your body time to get used to it. F 40 2 months

3  Hrt I start spotting every time I begin the 10 day cycle for the progesterone part. I thought cycling would help clear the thicker lining. I don't know what the best dosage is for me. Can I use prometrium capsules intravaginally? Would I absorb it better? I am wondering if I am absorbing it. I have had endometrial hyperplasia with Vivelle dot .075 patch and have also been on continuous prometrium. My osteoarthritis in feet, hands and back have increased over the last 2 yrs. I am so frustrated. F 68 10 years

1  Pre-menopausal Dizziness, sleepiness every day, felt overly emotional, unfocused. Shortly after taking nightly dose, I noticed my heart racing. It was in the 130-140 bpm range and would not return to normal. Finally had to go to ER for an intravenous dose of Lopressor to slow down the heart rate. F 53 30 days

5  Extremely heavy bleeding, anemia Occasionally slightly dizzy after taking it. I take it every few days to keep it in my system. Periods now heavy but not hemorrhaging. I cannot control it with any type of estrogen/progesterone birth control pill because of severe emotional side effects. I'm using the prometrium to try to avoid a surgery. In addition, avoiding soy products helps. F 50 1 years
