PROMETRIUM  (PROGESTERONE):  Progesterone is a type of female hormone (progestin). This medication is similar to the progesterone that your body naturally makes and is given to replace the hormone when your body is not making enough of it. In women who are not pregnant and not going through menopause, this medication is used to restore normal menstrual periods that have stopped for several months (amenorrhea). Progesterone is also used as part of combination hormone replacement therapy with estrogens to reduce menopause symptoms (e.g., hot flashes). Progesterone is added to estrogen replacement therapy to reduce the risk of cancer of the uterus. This medication is not for use in children. Progesterone must not be used to test for pregnancy.   FDA Approval Date: 1999-10-15 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  Perimenopausal I started a few months ago on 100mg, loved it, finally I slept, no sweats or mood swings, felt so good I went off for a month, could not sleep. Back on again, take at night just prior to bed, sleep is better, not great, bloating, and weight gain omg. Reading this I honestly thought I was starting to have early signs of dementia, mind is so foggy, always tierd, low mood, I think I might piece the cap it's enclosed in and try on my skin. Let you know if it works F 49 30 days

1  Perimenopause Non stop headaches, sinus pain, heart palpitations & bloating My head was in pain for the entire time I took this medication. It started out as "regular" headaches, but became a combination of both a headache and a sinus headache. I did not have a cold, allergies or any other type of sinus conditions at the time. Also, the fast irregular heart palpitations were terrible. The word that best describes this drug is toxic. F 53 40 days

1  Peri Menopause Severe Anxiety, Panic Attack, Fear of own brain, Suicidal images/worries, Unable to think of words in sentences, Brain 'flashes' resulting in extreme fear. It took me a while to work out what the culprit was. Always had general anxiety, never medicated. Went on Prometrium and all my troubles started ending with me having a full blown panic attack and spending the day in hospital.. Absolutely horrifying. Been off it for 2 days and am almost back to my normal (sane) self. If I'd only done more research before taking this drug I never would have done it. Been left with PTSD from my 10 day long 'nervous breakdown' which ended a day after I stopped taking this horrible drug. F 50 40 days

3  To resolve iron deficiency Severe depression, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, can't get out of bed, persistent heart palpitations, random crying, no desires, Took to lighten period to fix my iron deficiency. It worked after the 2nd month or so. Lighter period, fewer cramps, but massive 3-day migraines instead. After 3-months, I'm depressed, agitated, have horrible anxiety, and can barely get out of bed everyday. F 30 4 months

2  PCOS/low progesterone Horrible medication. It makes me feel and act like a bipolar even though my mental faculty is perfectly fine on a normal day without this medication. It puts me on a high of anxiety and panic, involuntary muscle movements, restlessness, headache, dizzy, brain fog like being drunk (i don't drive or operate machinery then), suicidal feelings, unable to control thoughts/emotions, then it goes into a low of numbness, (like a terrible hangover), over calm and sleepiness, muscle weakness. it's like a storm washed over my body. terrible night dreams. BUT IT WORKS TO INDUCE PERIOD AND INCREASE PROGESTERONE IN THE BOOD, THEREBY REDUCING HIGH LH AND HIGH PULSE OF GnRH AS IN PCOS CASE. i will start applying it topically. tried vag application but it makes me sore.  3  PCOS, Secondary Amenorrhea Extreme dizziness and fatigue (usually spend quite a bit of time in bed while taking this medication), breast tenderness, bloating, headaches, mood swings, weird dreams, anxiety and feelings of losing control. This drug works for me in that it helps keep the endometrial lining from becoming too thick. So it does work in terms of inducing a bleed. The side effects are so bad for me personally though. It really affects my quality of life for 10 days. The fatigue and dizziness are extreme. Mood issues (depression, feelings of losing control) are bad too. I feel like I become another person on this medication. I’ve never been able to tolerate hormormonal medication well. 39 10 days

3  Menopause Awful menopause symptoms. Went on Oestrogen patch which really worked and after two weeks felt like my old self again. Had to introduce Progesterone and was prescribed Prometrium. LOVED it at first, slept like a log, first time in years and it was just fabulous with no side effects, Have been on it 2.5 months now and going off it as after about 6 weeks I gained so much weight and huge, distended, bloated stomach. I literally starved myself (always a slim person) but could not lose a single gram of weight. Huge boobs and just uncomfortable. Also, had a liver function test and my liver count was alarmingly high. I don't drink at all and the doc said "Progesterone' ... It has been one week now since I've been off it and already my stomach has gone down by 3/4 and my boobs too but it will take a while to get rid of this unusual fat that I have gained. Wonderful initially and wish it had stayed that way. Might try applying it occasionally and topically (by piercing capsule with a needle) in a few months time. F 54

1  Perimenopause Anxiety, depression, insomnia, panic atacks, dizziness, restlessness, felling stoned First 2 weeks on prometrium felt so relaxed, but dizzy and foggy minded all the time. After-felt totally abnormal: over relaxed, no feelings, no desires, was sleepy all day long , but could not sleep normally. Insomnia and odd dreams. Panick attacks and depression. Felt so anxious. Before prometrium all was normal. Was taking prometrium because of blood pressure ups and downs. F 45 21 days

4  HRT, non existant progesterone When taken orally: upset stomach, tachycardia, unable to sleep. When applied topically: drowsy, sinus congestion, headache I'm sure it helps (stopped joint clicking and night sweats) but the side effects are awful! The worst is the sinus congestion and headache. One day was so bad I had to call in sick. Exhausted... F 41 7 days

4  TTC Took this for the luteal phase of one menstrual cycle in an effort to treat a potential luteal phase defect while ttc. Took 100 mg vaginally at 10:30 pm before bed. This drug made me feel pretty good, actually! I was incredibly calm, calm calm. Almost TOO calm, like sleepy calm. And had an overall sense of ease and optimism. Things that used to enrage me in seconds just rolled off me. (This has been a very high stress period of my life, so it's possible that my natural prog. was getting diminished due to stress response) By 4:30 pm, got very sleepy and by 10:30 each night, could barely keep my eyes open. I slept incredibly well with amazing dreams and woke up refreshed. That lingering extra 2 pounds of weight in my belly that I couldn't seem to lose all year just rolled off me (possibly unrelated? or possibly due to lowered cortisol levels?). My skin (which is often oily) was less so, and more balanced. I feel like I must have had low progesterone levels if s I don't feel comfortable taking this for a long time, but may give it a few cycles to see what happens. F 37 12 days

1  Endometriosis Nausea and vomiting, worse pelvic pain and low back pain, breast swelling and pain, dizziness, migraines, brain fog, severe fatigue, anxiety, depression My doctor prescribed this to me for endometriosis and I’ve been trying to hang in there and give it a chance, but the side effects are too adverse. I am continuously nauseated and in a lot more pain. Completely drained of energy even upon waking and sleeping 10hrs at night. Dizzy all day and on the verge of passing out. I have begun to have anxiety attacks even though I have never experienced any mental illness before. As the medicine hasn’t stopped my period my doctor increased dosage to 400mg and symptoms only got worse. My doctor insists that the symptoms cannot be caused by Prometrium, but I’ve read about too many women’s adverse symptoms and know that isn’t true. I have been taking this medication for 2.5 months and will stop in hopes I begin feeling better. Please be advised if you have similar symptoms you are not the only one, listen to your body and trust yourself! F 27 75 days
