PROMETRIUM  (PROGESTERONE):  Progesterone is a type of female hormone (progestin). This medication is similar to the progesterone that your body naturally makes and is given to replace the hormone when your body is not making enough of it. In women who are not pregnant and not going through menopause, this medication is used to restore normal menstrual periods that have stopped for several months (amenorrhea). Progesterone is also used as part of combination hormone replacement therapy with estrogens to reduce menopause symptoms (e.g., hot flashes). Progesterone is added to estrogen replacement therapy to reduce the risk of cancer of the uterus. This medication is not for use in children. Progesterone must not be used to test for pregnancy.   FDA Approval Date: 1999-10-15 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  Perimenopausal symptoms Absolutely love it. True, it doesn't agree with a percentage of women, and looks like they've all left a review here. Of course it depends on our individual bodies and hormone balance- but for me, it's been great. I have take it 12-14 days of my cycle for the past three months. I started with 100mg at bedtime and this made me tired and fixed my insomnia. There was some next day sleepiness but that went away in a few days. I found my mood, brain fog and energy were better. Later, I moved to 200 mg. I have to take this in the afternoons because for me it is so energizing. I notice a slight increase in HR with it. But by nighttime sleep is good. Same beneficial effects on mood amd motivation, and it balances the .25 estrogen patch I use. It also decreases my aches and pains. No bloating or sore breasts or weight gain (too much estrogen on its own did that). Still waiting to see if it will eventually help lengthen my cycle back out and decrease heavy periods, but I feel better than I have in years and wish a doctor had given it to me when I first started getting perimenopausal symptoms! You won't know how it agrees with you unless you try it. If you're peri menopausal and don't have an intolerance to it, it can be a godsend. F 45 40 days

5  On HRT premature ovarian failure I get tired and dizzy sometimes after taking it. Some nights no side effects at all. I also take Vivelle Dot 0.075 twice a week. I take it for the first 12 days of the month. When it does make me dizzy it may last into the next day. It It is worth it to me, my hot flashes were extreme. I had days literally having one an hour. I would turn almost a purple shade. My heart would race then the sweat would drench me, sleep was torture. That has all stopped. I have gained some weight but that may just be my fault. A full glass of water does really help keep the side effects on the lower side. Hormones are crazy. F 44 2 years

5  Low progesterone I had a few mild headaches I'm taking progesterone to help sustain my pregnancy after a mc due to low progesterone levels. I began taking it at 4 wks pregnant, and am now 9 weeks along. If this medication helps me to have a healthy pregnancy and baby, it will be well worth it. F 44 5 weeks

5  No longer producing progesterone Tender breasts, oily skin, drowsiness, calmness, helps with cramps, shorter periods, My body was no longer producing progesterone which caused headaches at the same time every day, hot flashes, night sweats, and insomnia. Prometrium has fixed all of these issues! So thankful for this! I had tried synthetic progesterone (aygestin) which was too strong for me but this plant-based version is just right! F 28 3 months

5  estrogen dominance At first I didn't like this drug, when I took it orally. The side effects were headache and it didn't really help much. I then applied it topically. I poked a hole & applied it on my skin (half at night and half in the morning). This was the answer. I am hypothyroid and estrogen dominant, which meant that estrogen was impeding the uptake of thyroid. This resulted in awful thyroid fatigue, aches, overall low feeling. With the Prometrium I feel happy, more energy, no more thyroid aches, and able to function. This is awesome. I have felt awful for so long and have my life back. F 54 28 days

5  Perimenopause Indigestion, drowsiness, leg pain. Was prescribed 200mg but started off taking half that dose (100mg). I was getting maybe 4-6 hours of broken sleep every night, horrible night sweats, insomnia, irritability, foggy brain. Since taking Prometrium I am sleeping like a baby! It's AMAZING! I take it 30 min before bed and I'm up in the morning feeling refreshed and energetic. Hot flashes are gone. I was 3-5 lbs overweight (I am 5'3 and weighed 126 which was heavy for my frame) and I'm down 4 lbs in 2 months. No bloating. Hair is nice and thick. I swear this medication is a Godsend for me. I had a tubal ligature after my 3rd child at 32 and I haven't felt this good since before I had kids. Seems like the issue is really hitting the right dose. Taking 200 mg gave me bad indigestion and leg cramps. Since I lowered the dose it seems to be perfect. Also I think you need to give your body time to get used to it. F 40 2 months

5  Extremely heavy bleeding, anemia Occasionally slightly dizzy after taking it. I take it every few days to keep it in my system. Periods now heavy but not hemorrhaging. I cannot control it with any type of estrogen/progesterone birth control pill because of severe emotional side effects. I'm using the prometrium to try to avoid a surgery. In addition, avoiding soy products helps. F 50 1 years

5  Estrogen Dominance, PMDD 1st & 2nd day dizziness, increased ability to fall asleep(take night) Very calming, helped quickly during the day with irritability & pmdd symptoms. I have searched for interventions for PMDD. I found that I had very similar symptoms to estrogen dominance day 12-28. It was as if my pms started way early and my period took forever to relieve it. I would be extremely hungry, angry, anxious, short with everyone, gain weight, extreme fatigue. I even thought I was Bipolar. Nope...it's balancing that good ol estrogen. Prometrium isn't able to lower current estrogen but cam help balance and that's the key. My husband and I agree it's already changed my life. F 30 2 weeks

5  Menopause Less muscle pain, brain fog, and improved fine motor skills / cognative function; some abdominal weight gain, other weight gain (which I can live with since the pain and fine motor skills / cognative function have improved). I already take something to sleep (trazadone) so, it really hasn't affected my sleep. Vivelle dot .50 mgs 2 X a week didn't help me very much by itself; doctor added Prometrium (100 mgs); no joy. Per "The Estrogen Alternative: Natural Hormone Therapy with Botanical Progesterone" [Raquel Martin], Progesterone ratio needs to be 125% to 1% for estrogen to be effective. Applied Prometrium topically 2 X and rotated location to areas of skin that is thin (forearm, wrist, tops of hands, back of knees). Also, now I just "forget" to use it; naturally cycle myself off. Interval between mood going to &^$# is getting longer and intensity of mood swings are less. Other things to also consider (as previously mentioned) is bio-identical thyroid medication (like Armour); and adrenal support (like Relora) and cortisol precursors like 7-keto DHEA and Pregnenolone. Yes, I have gained weight, but, was not active nor eating a "clean diet" (craved carbs - sure sign of weak adrenals); sodium / potassium not balanced? Water retention less severe since eating 2 blended potassium rich meals every day (lots of resources for blended meals on web). And exercise has helped with burning fat. (It takes a lot more energy to burn fat after menopause -- see "THE COMPLETE FIT or FAT" by Covert Bailey (great section of menopause) or one of "Zone" exercise books / websites. You are NOT exercising as efficiently as you think you are because some exercises are not effective for burning fat as you might think! F 55 180 days

5  perimenopause, bleeding, anxiety In the beginning - lethargy, depression, drowsiness, breast tenderness The side effects were in the 1st month only. Now I take Prometrium 100 mg 12-14 days a month, vaginally, before going to bed. In the beginning I had to use some Estrogel to get out of the depression, However using Estrogel led to extra bleeding/ spotting and anxiety, so now I am using Prometrium only. Lack of progesterone in the perimenopause is the reason women get anxious because of estrogen fluctuations, (Natural) progesterone down-regulates estrogen receptors thus reducing this sensitivity and diminishing anxiety. One more comment: progesterone creams and gels did not help me at all, since progesterone, unlike Estrogel, is not absorbed by my skin. Vaginal way is the best way to take it, also for endometrium protection. F 49 3 months

5  PMDD Water Retention AMAZING!! Had horrible PMDD. It's completely gone. Not only is the PMDD gone but all the anxiety I was experiencing the rest of the month that I thought was normal is gone as well. I feel like a completely new person. I could be the poster child! My doctor put me on a low dose water pill which has alleviated the water retention. Also, my appetite has gone down tremendously. Its a win win for me! F 48 2 months

5  Sustain pregnancy Have had 2 m/c and a hard time getting pregnant. This medication makes me feel so calm and mellow I'd keep taking it, besides if it lets me carry my baby to term I don't mind. It does make me super tired but I work from home so I'm lucky I don't have to even dress up and can stay in yoga pants all day! It does scare me to read about birth defects though F 31 2 months
