LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Fibroids I've had severe body aches. Constant nausea and vomiting. I had a 3 month dose in May. The hot flashes have been awful. I seem to be having more symptoms in the 3rd month. The upside, the bleeding stopped. But the side effects are unbearable. I will never take the shot again and I don't recommend it. F 41 3 months

1  Endometriosis and ovarian cysts Severe hot flashes, Night sweats, dizzy spells, faintness, grogginess, insomnia, nausea, vomiting, constipation, migraines, itchy dry skin, initially a yeast infection which passed after about 3 days, vaginal dryness, dehydration, feverishness & chills, achey arms and legs, initial weight gain/bloating, irritability and crankiness, shakiness/trembling on occasion...SEVERE RASH when my skin is exposed to the sun. My doctor convinced me to try these injections for 3 months, as an alternative to surgery. It did NOT HELP, in fact it made me feel worse. I've only had the first injection and refused to go back for the second & third doses. It's been 2 1/2 months and I am still suffering from the majority of the side effects every day. Furthermore it did NOTHING to help control my endometriosis symptoms, in fact they are much worse now. I was better off before I got the shot. I really regret letting my doctor talk me into this and wish I had just opted for another lapro or even hysterectomy. DO NOT take this medication it is awful, and not worth the expense! F 41 1 months

1  Suspected endo Seizures, complicated migraines, Cushing, Addie's syndrome, nuropathic pain. And unbearable hot flashes, bladder disorder. I won't take it again! It's poison. Be very careful about any drugs you're taking, especially depo. You can't just skip the next pill if you experience any problem. Just have to wait it goes away... But such a drug can stay in your system for years. Reconsider your options before taking Lupron or other depo drugs. F 41 3 months

5  Severe endometriosis A bit depression, hot flushes and bone loss. I have endometriosis for 20 years. My endometriosis was unstoppable; had 2 surgeries but they did not provide long term relief. Surgeons kept saying a have a lot of powder burn patterns which are impossible to clean up. My last surgery did not go well, and I started to have hernia kind of pain around my right groin. I know that it is by product of my 2nd surgery, and got checked for hernia but it was negative. The surgeon kept denying that it is related to the surgery. Since my 2nd surgery (for 4 years), in addition to pain due to endometriosis I have right groin pain (which is worse than endometriosis and limits my daily physical activities). Now I am scared to have another surgery and for me lupron is the best option for now. Lupron definitely reduces my pain, and prevents the disease spreading further. I have been on lupron for 17 months now and it is the longest I have been on it. I feel wondeful when I am on it: My pain is more controllable and it is great relief knowing that my endometriosis is not getting any worse than it already is. However, recently, I started to have back pain most probably due to bone loss, but I think my doctor will prescribe very low dose hormone to take while I am on lupron. I am planning to be on lupron until I get into menopause -if possible. Other option is to get my ovaries removed I guess but I don't trust surgeons any more. While fixing something, they are causing more damage and it is very hard to prove it. F 40 17 months

5  Fibroid, heavy bleeding and anemia No side effects, felt great on the Lupron. I had energy again and was able to work out and lose some weight. I had a total of 3 shots to shrink a large fibroid before surgery. The doctor originally thought he might have to do a hysterectomy because of the size of the fibroid and location. But because of the Lupron, it did shrink and that is all he removed. My hemoglobin went up before the surgery since I had no periods and I was able to work out again. The doctor said it was successful becase I was in good shape and lost 14 lbs before the surgery. I feel so much better now!!! F 40 3 months

5  Fibroids, heavy bleeding, anemia I didn't really have any side effects. I am taking Cymbalta, so that may be helping to not have some of those nasty Lupron side effects. I just had my 2nd shot and don't feel like I am on anything. I had my period after the first shot, but it was a lot lighter than what I am used to, so I am feeling pretty good and not as anemic as I was before the Lupron. I'm taking this for just 3 months, than having a myomectomy which hopefully will not lead to a hysterectomy. F 40 1 months

5  fibroids None so far. I did have minor muscle ache in my upper left arm but it was nothing serious. No hot flashes, mood swings and etc. I am taking the add back though. Took it the first day I got the shot. So I hope that's what's controlling menopausal symptoms because I feel great. Due to my large fibroids I am taking lupron + add back to hopefully help shrink my fibroids. I couldn't wait to get my first shot due to my heavy bleeding. I take the 1x a month. Dr wants me on for 6 mos max. May be less if fibroids shrink enough for myomectomy. Period did come first month, and 2nd shot did come next day but was only spotting. Just got the 2nd shot around 2wks ago. Dr said its normal due to body has to get used to it. I am very happy so far. Don't feed into all the negative feedback. We are all different and I wish you the best. F 40 2 months

5  Uterine fibroid None I was so freaked out about getting the 3-month depot shot but it turned out to be no big deal. I have lost a bit of weight, my hair has stopped falling out, I have more energy and I haven’t noticed any muscle or joint pain aside from the typical aches and pains I deal with anyway.  4  Post operative treatment Dizzy spells, hot flashes, (palpatations but I get those anyway) I am on Atenolol I lost a lot of weight. I didn't gain weight. I lost my hips by three inches and two bra sizes ( cup size C to A ). However, that was almost four years ago. I was on the injection for almost 10 months. I have to do it again. The cysts are back and the Endo is acting up again. I am trying to find another optional treatment this medicine is extremely expensive without insurance. I am going to give this another try but more importantly I am not going to give in to this condition of Endo. It is all a metabolic condition and an auto immune disorder. Avoid red meat, caffine and chocolate on the treatment therapy. Walk as much as you can, meditate, pray and talk with others about your experiences. Lastly, READ, READ as much you can about your condition. Ask your Doctors every question you have for them and never settle for just one opinion. F 40 10 months

4  endometriosis mood swings, insomnia, heart palpatations, joint pain, fatigue I am wondering if anyone else has experienced heart palpatations? I just had my 2nd 3 month shot 2 weeks ago. The heart palpatations are new and very unsettling. I'm trying to deal with the rest of the side effects, but this one worries me. F 40 4 months

3  Fibroids Haven't had any major side effects. Had some bleeding two weeks before my next period, which did not show up. Lasted a few days. No hot flashes. Blood pressure has been up the last two times I had the shot, but I am already on meds for High Blood Pressure. Injection site is sore, but no swelling. Tired, but not overly so. None of the major side effects that others have reported. Received second shot this past week. F 40 2 months

3  fibroid tumors Headache immediately after each injection, insomnia for the first couple of nights after each injection, but the worst was severe depression after the first and last injection (while coming off the drug). No hot flashes or night sweats. F 40 6 days

3  fibroid tumors Headache immediately after each injection, insomnia for the first couple of nights after each injection, but the worst was severe depression after the first and last injection (while coming off the drug). No hot flashes or night sweats, luckily. I had two fibroids, both about the size of a peach. After 6 mos. of injections, one shrunk and one grew. It has been two months since my last injection. I just spotted the month following, but am now experiencing pretty bad cramps during my first period while going into the second month. I had the feeling my first period after 6 mos. was going to be a dilly, since my body is trying to get back to normal. F 40 6 months

3  To slow endometrial growth Month 1: Extreme fatigue. Hotflashes hit week 3. Month 2/3: Extreme fatigue (laid in bed full weekends, after work, slow at work), 7 or so hotflashes a day, 1 to 3 headaches a day, and in month 3, mood swings. Dry skin around fingernails, ridges in my nails, even though taking calcium and other vitamins. Funny affect at end of Month 5: Straight hair! These side effects were greatly alleviated with progesterone add-back presecribed at endo of Month 3, and a switch from Paxil to Celexa. Depot Lupron was prescribed following laparoscopy to remove endometrial growths, and help avoid cancer (mom is ovarian cancer survivor). I have NO pain, so this is simply preventative. I receive a monthly shot, and for first few months, most side affects were extreme but tolerable. However, fatigue was awful. In month 3 I felt emotionally fatigued as well. (Having gone through 2 rounds of IVF, I found IVF hormone shifts much easier to handle than this.) I was taking Paxil at the same time as Depot, which seemed to exacerbate the fatigue. Switched to Celexa, which helped but didn't totally alleviate fatigue. ADD BACK of NORETHINDRONE = GREAT FOR ME. After 3 months, my doctor prescribed 5 mg norethindrone (progesterone), which made me feel MUCH better. Now I have almost NO hot flashes or headaches. Ridges in nails still present. My last shot (6 of 6 monthly shots) is next week. I may have a party to celebrate! F 40 5 months

3  Uterine fibroids The day I received shot I had hot flashes and chills and my arse was sore and burning for a week,4 weeks later I still have hot flashes and chills. I've also been spotting since getting shot. One week later I felt like I had the flu, my whole body hurt and had burning sensation in muscles and in kidney area also very tired.I also experienced burning sensation in both nipples, it felt like someone took sandpaper over my nipples.4 weeks later my bones still kinda ache, I'm still spotting and I also have vaginal dryness, lack of sex drive. I also see things in peripheral vision. Didn't have that before. Also some forgetfulness.I also get weird shooting pain sensation in head. My mood after shot, little things would set me off. Kinda feel emotional at times. I don't like the side effects but it did shrink my fibroid and will soon have surgery to remove it and then hopefully this nightmare will be over and my periods will be normal and not Niagara falls. I had one injection and I'm not sure I would get the second one if it was prescribed but I'm sensitive when it comes to medication. The side effects are manageable and they come and go. There are a lot of horror stories on internet and I was scared to death to take this drug but I would take the shot again because it did shrink my 2.5 cm submucous fibroid to 1.8 I'm hoping my body will be back to normal soon but after surgery I'm gonna be on estrogen and progesterone for a month. I hate medicine. F 40 1 months

2  Ovarian Cysts Tired all the time, my bones hurt and ache like they all had been broken in every joint, hot flahes, night sweats which made me even more tired due to being so uncomfortable. My ovarian pain went away but I am not sure which is worse. F 40 5 months

2  Endometriosis Severe problems with the intial "flare-up" (for me the first 10 days). Much effort needed to keep on functioning. Beware of the temporary high estrogen when exercising: injuries to ligaments are more likely to occur, as they are around ovulation, perhaps even more so during the flare-up phase. I almost didn't take this drug because of all the negative things I had read about it. I wondered: why so _many_ negative experiences? Still I expected it would all go well. But as of yet, it doesn't. If it changes I will add a new rating. No effect on the endo pain yet at 17 days. No true hot flashes, just an uncomfortable feeling of warmth in my face now and again. Lots of trouble sleeping, waking up frequently. Acne and oily skin are the same as with progestin or Danazol treatment. Apparently it can take up to 2 months to experience a beneficial effect, which is a lot of time for a treatment that can't be used for a very long time or repeated often. It is also very expensive and I doubt that the investment (both in money and effort) is worth it. F 40 17 days

1  Stage IV Endo Severe arthralgias, and general aches and pains, hot flushes, lost 30 lbs, memory loss, no libido I would not recommend this therapy for anyone, my joint pain has not resolved (some days I can barely walk) my last dose was more than 3 years ago. I had no prior history of joint pain, no family history of joint pain. F 40 5 months

1  Anemic, heavy menstrual period, Had a biopsy done on 6/24/05 and got the lupron shot the same day. Is for 3 months, supposed to get 1 more. I thought it was going to stop my period but made it worse I was spotting and lightly bleeding after the biopsy, got my cycle a few day's later and am still bleeding 17 days!!!! This was supposed to help my anemia and my possible fibroids. I had a major anxiety attack in the middle of the night (thought I was going to die , I was bleeding from the nose and down there! shaking, weak feeling in the leggs almost fainting, my leggs were on fire from the inside, it was horrible. I'm on prozac and I don't think this is good for me at all. Have horrible mood swings, have insomnia, weird thoughts. No I would not recommend this medicine. It's pure evil. F 40 17 days

1  Severe Endometriosis (15 years) Hot flashes, hair loss, insomnia, all the ones everyone else is having. I had a bad experience with Lupron and because of that I would not recommend. I took the shot one time and the next day my hands were swelling and itchy, then broke out in hives all over my arms, legs, buttocks so went to the doctor three times after that and they determined I was allergic. Sent me to a dermatologist and guess what, I have eaten wheat all my life, but now I am allergic to wheat and all because of this damn shot. Now every single time I eat something with wheat, I break out on my arms, feet, legs, neck, it is awful. After going thru several laps, Depo Provera injections, and more laps, and 15 years difference between my children (lucky to have had the 2nd) and this lupron injection, I finally was given a complete hysterectomy and have never felt better.
