LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Endometriosis, Ovarian Cysts Migraines, night sweats, joint pain, memory loss, 5-10 lb weight gain per month I was not successful in postponing a hysterectomy with this drug. I wanted children, this was going to help me with that. I gave up and had the hysterectomy and now I will be happy adopting. My question to those out there is, it's been 4 months since I stopped therapy and I now am suffering from seven kidney stones all of a sudden. Has anyone had that problem with this drug? I am trying to link the sudden onset to anything that could have occurred recently and this drug is my only "new" thing. F 42 6 months

1  Endometriosis, Stage 4 At first I was thrilled because my endo was so bad I was considering suicide during my periods. Lupron stopped the periods, but now after 8 months of treatment the pain is slowly returning, and I ADDITIONALLY suffer from extreme fatigue, continued pain in lower left quadrant, hospitalized for gastroenteritis/duodenitis, extreme neck pain and nearly crippling foot pain. Had cortisone injections in knee because it was so bad my doctor thought it was a Baker's cyst. Extreme lower back pain after standing for longer than an hour. Wake in the middle of the night with pain in back, hips, knees. Frightening forgetfulness. Many times I do not remember conversations or names at all, and am sometimes aphasic. I thought I was going insane until I heard this was COMMON with Lupron. Libido? What's that? I am FURIOUS that I didn't know this. And now they tell me the Endo pain will just come right back when I stop taking the shots???? Had I known the side effects could be permanent I don't think I would have taken this drug. I am now heartbroken and hopeless. F 42 9 months

5  endometriosis Hot flashes and night sweats, some breakthrough bleeding between the first and second shot I completed a 6 month regiman in June.Worked wonderfully for endo-the severe pain was 90% better after the first month. I took progestrin while on regimen and had no side effects. I experienced the side effects at the end of the 6 month regimen when I stopped the progestrin. I should have stayed on it. It took 4 months to get my period back. So far the cramping is mild. Everyone is different but I didn't experience anything scary like some of the posts. F 41 6 months

5  Severe Endometriosis Hot flushes (ie when a little warm will become very so/sweat); occasional nightmares (I believe associated with Aygestin) Extremely positive experience. After a laparoscopy to remove an ovarian cyst, part of an ovary, and severe/widespread endometrosis growths, I am taking Lupron shots 1 every 3 mos for 9 mos. I was in chronic pain with the untreated endo, had no energy, and gained 30lbs in a year. Since the surgery + Lupron + Aygestin I have my life back; energy, no pain (with the exception of some cramping around the time of what would have been my first period, but not as bad as before treatment), and minimal side effects. I have lost weight because I've returned to a moderate exercise regimen that I was unable to do when in so much pain from the endo. I follow a fairly strict menopausal diet (including restricting alcohol intake) that I think works well to reduce the hotflashes, prevent weight gain, and hopefully prevent osteoporosis/loss of bone mass. Physician recommended Black Cohosh and Slow Mag for hot flashes, and I haven't experienced any. FYI, my physician suggested taking Aygestin earlier in the day if the side effect of violent nightmares is being experienced. F 41 80 days

5  endometriosis hot flashes and night sweats This drug was fabulous! I went from extreme pain and not being able to bend over and put on my shoes... to being able to do cartwheels! I became totally pain free. The side effects were worth getting my life back! F 41 6 months

5  Adenomyosis As if I was undergoing menopause: night sweats & sleep interruptions, hot flashes, irritability, and chronic headaches. I took a 6 month cycle of injections one year ago. The six months made me scared of what actual menopause is going to be like because my symptoms were difficult to live with, but the medicine was successful. My symptoms of adenomyosis have nearly disappeared and I avoided any further gynecological surgery. I am pleased that my doctor and I chose this route. F 41 6 months

5  large Fibroids A little weight gain, some joint pain This injection has been a wonder to me. I was having periods for 3 weeks at a time. I ended up in the hospital needing 4 pints of blood because my hemoglobin level was so low. I was in constant pain. I found out That I had a fibroid tumor the size of a grapefruit in my uterus. Surgery is not an option at this time because of the size and my low blood. The injection has been a blessing. The few side effects I am suffering from now are worth the ones that have all but ended.  5  Endometriosis Hot flashes and night sweats. Some vaginal bleeding in first couple of weeks. Some memory loss, but it's negligible. I discovered that when I exercised (cardio + weight resistance) 3 times a week, the hot flashes were minimal. When I stopped exercising, the hot flashes came back in full force! Needless to say, I am back to exercising and after 2 weeks the hot flashes are far easier to deal with. I have not experienced any weight gain. It definitely is much less scarier than I thought it would be. F 41 6 months

4  Stop menstruation/anemia Hotflashes, lightheadness, joint pain I am 2 weeks into my second shot and so far so good. I am taking lupron to stop my periods as I am extremly anemic and need surgery. My iron levels are at 7.3. I am doing well on the shot with the exception of the minor heat waves that take over my body several times a day. I am now experiencing joint pain, weird but I will ask my doctor about it. I have not been to cranky and moody which is good. F 41 45 days

4  large fibroid I have had 3 injections (3 month span) and I can honestly say I have had no major issues with this drug. My doctor wants to decrease the size of my fibroid before my hysterectomy to make surgery easier. Do not be afraid to take these injections. I went into it with an open mind and the trade-off of having a few hot flashes far outweighs the heavy periods anyday in my book. ;) F 41 3 months

4  severe endometriosis pain in joints, headaches, mood swings, slight weight gain According to my OBGYN & Oncologist that performed a hysterectomy on me, I will be on Lupron for life. I was told by the Oncologist that I had the worst case of endometriosis that he's ever seen. The endometriosis cemented itself to my entire abdominal area & made a wall between my lower & uppper body. Doctor's are unable to remove it. I lost my right kidney due to this and was in severe pain (screaming at top of my lungs)before the surgery. I've been taking lupron shots for over 2 years now and I am completely pain free. I am very tired of taking the shots, but very thankful to God that I don't have to go through the pain that I had before. It was like hell on Earth. F 41 2 years

4  Large Fibroids I just got the 1st injection and having a little discomfort. I'm not experiencing nothing unbearable. After having periods that last 3 weeks and severe pain anything is worth a try. My physician is trying to shrink tumors before surgery in 3 months. F 41 1 days

3  Large Uterine Fibroids Hot flashes, night sweats, shortness of breath, chest pains and light-headed. Took a 3 month injection to reduce massive fibroid. Ended up having hysterectomy anyway. Slighty reduced size of fibroid. Hot flashes are the pits. F 41 2 months

1  Endometriosis started in 2000 for 6 mos. As soon as I got the first shot, I was in so much pain, by the 3rd I was in the ER, I had kidney stones. THey haven't stopped since, I also get infections, kidney, UTI and the past 6 mos, I found out I have a growth on my thyoid, Tooth infection, ear infection, 5 kidney infections, MRSA infection, the flu, and now I have strep throat. While I don't think that Lupron caused all the infections, I DO feel that it caused something in my body to happen to make me form the stones I've been passing, and to my immune system. Since taking the last set of Lupron, I just got continually sicker as time went by, with no answers. My PCP doesn't like Lupron and wouldn't use it. I also have osteopenia, fibro, myofacial syndrom, and bone pain. F 41 6 months

1  Endometriosis mood swings, sweats, joint pain, short term memory loss, felt very anxious, depression, felt needy, dull headache EVERYDAY. This drug should be ILLEGAL, the side effects are worse than anything I ever experienced. Had my uterus removed and that was much easier than dealing with this terrible 3 month injection I had. DO NOT recommend this to anyone. F 41 90 days
