LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  endometriosis my endometriosis symptoms went away almost immediately. I have had little to no side effects. A little bit of fatigue that I think may be attributable to it because I can't think of any other reason I've been a little bit tired. F 42 2 months

5  Endometriosis Minor hot flashes (actually welcome during cold winter!), BAD headaches 2-3x/month, achy joints- esp feet & legs, minor mood swings, weight gain (holidays didn't help!), brain-fog/forgetfulness, but most natably, NO PAIN FROM ENDOMETRIOSIS! Though a different dosage, I took Lupron many times from 1998-2007 for IVF. I have 4 children of my own & also 2 surro-babies :-) I don't recall any major side effects then. This time around is different! I am experiencing increased joint/muscle pain-esp in my legs-and found this site looking for answers. There are some pretty scary posts here! Though I have some serious side effects, I am assuming they will resolve once my 6-month treatment ends. They are all worth not having the pain of endometriosis every month! I have been thinking that gluten is making these symptoms worse, so am not entirely convinced that Lupron is the cause. F 42 4 months

5  fibroids/heavy bleeding The first one month shot did nothing for me. The second shot (3 month) totally stopped my heavy bleeding and put me into menopause for the summer with NO hot flashes. The drug shrunk my uterus/fibroids dramatically. I no longer need an abdominal, but can do a vaginal/laparoscopic hysterectomy! Be sure to get insurance preauthorization...it's pricey. F 42 3 months

5  Endometrosis, bilateral cysts hot flashes, weight gain This is the 2nd time I've had Lupron. 10 years ago it helped me get pregnant following laproscopy. This time I had horrible abdominal pain - discovered large cysts with debris on both ovaries. After 2 shots, both my pain and cysts are gone. WELL WORTH IT. F 42 2 months

4  Severe Endometriosis, Jan.2008 1st shot-sudden exhaustion & very rapid heart palpitation. 2nd shot-terrible daily headaches for 2 wks. The shot area was very Painful. I had to move a lot so my shot side doesn't become stiff. After surgery, I was started on the shots. By the 3rd shot, I was having very sharp sudden pains from the endo. It's bearable & something I've accepted that I will always have since I'm severely scarred inside. Still have the hot flashes, no longer freeze at nights, sweat a lot. I'm taking Calcium to help delay the irreversible osteosporosis from the shot. In Oct.,I'll know if the depo shots worked on the endo. F 42 3 months

4  Anemia from large fibroids Injection site quite sore a few days. Another period at 2nd week after shot. Some moodiness. A few mild hot flashes to date. I started taking iron supplements w/ vitamin C about a month before the Lupron. I am just about 1 month in after shot. My doc went with the 22.5 mg for 3 months pre-hysterectomy. My doctor has used this for at least 10 years with success for my condition. Gave me much info to recommend it. I would have needed a blood transfusion to have surgery owing to my severe anemia and low red blood cell count from heavy bleeding. I have had a few side effects as listed, but overall I feel much, much better now that my bloodwork is near normal. Only bummer was I was just finishing my period when I got the shot, and a week after injection started another. Not as bad as a normal period, but lasted 7-8 days. Since no cycle. Sometimes I feel a little short tempered, but no where near as bad as when severely anemic. I was exhausted all the time before, and very short fused. I'll report again should anything change, but if I were nearer to done, I'd have made this rating a 5. I am only doing a 4 as I ha F 42 3 months

3  large fibroids no side effects I was on Lupron for 3 months to try and shrink my fibroids before a hysterectomy. My treatments are over and the injections did not shrink the fibroids at all. My doctor said if anything, they are bigger. My hysterectomy is in two weeks. Don't be afaid to try the injections, just don't get your hopes too high. I feel like I wasted 3 months, but you have no way of knowing, so it's worth the try I suppose? F 42 3 months

3  Endometriosis Mood swings that are driving my family crazy, tired, pelvic pain, lower back pain, memory loss, hot flashes followed by shivering The first two weeks I had a lot of pain. The next two weeks were infinitely better and I thought it was finally starting to work. These last two weeks are making me question everything. The mood swings are terrible. I cry all the time. The pain just won't go away. I have two months left on this shot and then am supposed to take the second shot. My family is frustrated because I'm not getting better. The hot flashes are becoming continual. F 42 6 weeks

2  Severe pain/possible return of endo Extreme nightsweats, hot flashes, weight gain/bloating, moodiness. My GYN said the Lupron injection is the treatment of choice now instead of laparoscopy for endo. So far I can't see the benefit of this medication over laparoscopy (I've had two surgeries over the years with no complications.) Would love to know how Lupron, with all these unwanted side effects, is supposed to be better than laparoscopy. At least with laparoscopy, you have a quick out-patient procedure with a relatively short recovery time. Instead, I'm now regretting that I agreed to the Lupron and have wasted the past year with gaining weight, clothes don't fit, I'm extremely moody, my hair is falling out, I can't sleep, I'm still in pain, AND STILL on pain medication. I can't help but think that it's been a waste of time so far. In addition, since I can't start back on the pill for birth control AND I'm not having a period, it's either use an alternative birth control method or just forget about having sex at all until this is finally over. With all the negative side effects, sex h F 42 6 months

2  Breast cancer/to stop periods I can put up with the night sweats and hot flashes, uncomfortable as they are. What I can not tolerate is the lack of motivation or apathy I am suffering from because of this drug. I didn't believe it at first. I thought it was just me, and I gave it six weeks while I investigated every other possibility. But it is true. The mood swings don't even bother me as much as this; this apathy or lack of motivation is a disaster and I could be out of a job. I can't do meaningful work, I eat chocolate because I am too lazy to cook, I drink wine instead of coffee because I don't have to prepare it. I am calling my doctor on Monday and telling him that I will not be taking a third shot. Unfortunately, I still have three weeks of the second shot "left". I hope to God I will return to my normal self. My dose is 7.5 mgs once per month. The main reason for taking it is to stop my periods because I want that separately from the breast cancer. However, after I got dx'd and had surgery for early stage breast cancer I was not allowed to go on the pill or use anything w/female hormones. Hence, the Lupron. It did work. Period is GONE. However, the side effects make the period look like less of a hassle by comparison. Not worth it for me. F 42 2 months

1  Endometriosis The 1st month was great. Took away about 75% of my endo pain. Didn't really have any side effects as I was also taking the add back therapy. Every month since then has been a night mare. Severe pelvic/rectal burning. To the point I can't sit down. Increase pain. Gallbladder pain. The treatment is definately worse the the initial problem.  1  bleeding submucosal uterine fibroid All menopausal symptoms while on it, extreme vertigo for 6 weeks as it was wearing off, tinnitus and touches of vertigo ever since, joint pain and aches in all joints & spine & neck, severe enough to wake me in the middle of the night and can't go back to sleep for some time from the aches/pain. Extreme fatigue, afternoon/evening headaches often. All still a problem 2 years later. Oh, and increased breast size by 1/2+ cup size, gained 20 lbs (cup size change NOT from weight, lost half of it and still have the increased size) plus I can easily express small drop of milk now, even tho progesterone tested normal. I was told there weren't any long term effects with the possible exception of slight negligable bone loss. I read the handouts. NOTHING like this was ever mentioned. I would NEVER have used this had I realized that anything like this was possible. Thyroid was tested & TSH & T4 are normal, ANA normal, Sed rate 1, so what the heck is this? NSAIDs don't help at all, neither does things like percocet or antidepressants. This is destroying my entire life. I was on it for 3 shots, one a month, except they didn't have the third shot on time, had to find a source and it was a week or two late. F 42 3 months

1  endo /cyclic pain 13 months Nausea, weight gain, swelling hands, feet, severe fatigue, abdominal spasms, muscle spasms, severe leg cramps hand cramps , sleep problems....none of these symptoms prior to...athletic slim body frame and very physically active prior to... I was mostly worried about depression/headache side effects....I only got a bad migraine 2 weeks after my 1st shot(monthly shots)..however it lasted almost 6 days and I lost vision in one eye (when the estrogen took a dive bomb.) Between the 2nd and 3rd shot...it finally worked for my endo/cyclic pain which previously landed me in the hospital 5 times the year before! After my 3rd shot...muscle cramps and muscle pain quite severe....doctor said to try small amount of add back therapy should help so I agreed to the 4th shot. BIG MISTAKE!!!!I woke up the next morning with my hands, feet, face and lips swollen and every muscle and joint in my body hurt like#*#!! I couldn't move far for 4 days! Painful to walk, grasp, talk ( jaw muscles) after a few days calmed down a bit. Then severe muscle spasms...it has now been 5 weeks...still severe muscle spasms mostly in my back (injured when I fell down the stairs before xmas) the spasms have settled there mostly!!  1  suspected endometriosis hip joint pain, worsening of pelvic pain I have had severe, constant lower left quadrant pelvic pain for the last 3 months and prior to this, the pain was sporadic for 3.5 yrs. I can no longer stand or walk for any distance and am taking hyrdromorphone for the pain (6 times stronger than morhpine). My gyno is guessing at endometriosis, but doesn't think this is what I have because the pain is constant and doesn't just come and go with my period. I have had nausea, bloating and tiredness since this started and am now completely sedentary due to the constant pain. I used to be a marathon runner before this started and have gained 40 lbs. over 3 years because I am not moving at all. Has anyone else had this type of severe, constant pain that turned out to be endo? I have had lots of CT's and ultrasounds, but am still waiting for an MRI and surgery. I got a shot of lupron 3 days ago (1 month dose) and I'm waiting to see if the pain dissipates in 2 weeks once the initial flare is done. I would love to hear from anyone else who has had the same type of pain or symptom history that turned out to be endo. My doctor has ruled out gastro and urinary problems, but I also have interstitial cystitis (painful bladder syndrome) which may or may not be related to my chronic pelvic pain. F 42 3 days
