| 4 | Fybroids | Hot flashes, night sweats and insommia | I've taken the drugs for 2-3 months now and continue to experience hot flashes. They were humorous at first, but are becoming annoying. The good thing is that I took a step back to analyze when I have the hot flashes and they're normally when I'm stressed (positive or negative). With this in mind, I've been able to predict one coming and manage it. I simply fan. I haven't had a period, which is good. I'm taking the medication before a lyproscoptic maectomy surgery. I would recommend it and my doctor was very honest about the side effects that I may experience. She has provided me with sleeping pills, but i haven't taken them yet. Nothing helped. Within a month, sex was impossible. Hot flushes, reduced concentration and brain-power (I am a full-time student of Pharmacy). Exhaustion, sleepiness, joint pains. Probably caused the osteoarthritis detected in my recent scan. Osteoporosis developed very quickly, but bones improved quickly when I went off the drug for a while. I now take Actonel (a bisphosphonate) to prevent bone loss. I developed metastases when I went off the drug for a while, including while I was in a gene therapy trial. | Don't people in the States take this drug for breast cancer ? It really does work if your cancer is oestrogen sensitive - you take it if you are pre-menopausal, to shut down oestrogen production by the ovaries. Then you can - and probably need to - take Arimidex as well, to stop peripheral production of oestrogen (by the fat cells, adrenal glands, etc.) I need to take both, as the Prostap / Lupron alone doesn't totally control the cancer. By the way, in the UK, Lupron is called Prostap. I have been living with breast cancer since at least 1997, and have only had this anti-oestrogen therapy - not chemo, because I had hoped to have children and didn't want to damage my fertility. Have taken Lupron / Prostap on and off for periods of 1-2 years. | F | 48 | | 5/10/2005 | 2 | adenomyosis and fibroids | just very tender at injection site for several days | I took the shot on March 1. I was diagnosed with adenomyosis and fibroids. I was hoping to have tumor ablation but the only treatment for adenomyosis is to remove the uterus. I am going in for a supracervical hysterectomy in June. We can't do it any sooner since I am anemic and the fibroids are large. The lupron shot was to shut down my ovaries so that I would stop bleeding and build my blood up and hopefully shrink the fibroids. I have always had heavy periods and they have gotten worse over the last few years. On the 22 day into my cycle I started bleeding, by day 2 I was flooding every hour changing a super plus tampon and over night pad. I am on my third day and it is finally letting up some. Hopefully I will stop soon and not bleed the next two months. I need to be stronger for surgery. I know spotting was a possibility but this was awful. I started taking vitamin k and vitamin d drops. Will let you know how it progresses. It was an awful expensive mistake if it doesn't work. Thank God my insurance paid for it. Other than that I can't say that I notice any side effects. Hope it works better for others. I was so looking forward to giving the rest of my tampons to my daughter. I ended up having to go buy more. | F | 48 | 11.25 1X day | 3/18/2010 | 1 | Fibroids, before hysteroscopic myo | Abdominal swelling or bloating. Not weight gain - I am only 92 pounds! - but rather seems to be PERMANENT water retention. The bloat occurred immediately after ONE Lupron shot during the estrogen flare phase, then diminished during the brief menopausal phase, then returned suddenly five weeks after I took the shot, as my estrogen levels returned to "normal". Seven months later I fear that my pituitary gland is permanently damaged. I am seeing an endocrinologist who is mystified by such localized bloat. My lower abdomen has an uncomfortable swelling about the size of a baseball and this has led to depression, anxiety, and high blood pressure. Now, my ob/gyn is not being honest and denying that the lupron is causing all the severe side effects that I have never experienced prior to this injection. My ob/gyn also had the nerve to tell me that my medical record shows that I received 3 lupron injections in 2006 prior to having surgery to remove fibroids only (no endometriosis at that time), and I was absolutely shocked and told her that my medical record has been falsified because I HAVE NEVER RECEIVED THIS DRUG PRIOR TO 2/15/10. Her response was shock, silence and stating she does not know what to say. I believe she is just trying to protect herself from a potential lawsuit from me. She and her nurse both adamantly told me the worst side effect would be hot flashes and the progesterone pill I would take each day would stop that, but they both lied. The worst side effects are what I previously mentioned and those symptoms have not diminished-- AT ALL. Of course, I absolutely refused to take another injection, and I ceased the progesterone pills because ironically and horribly those pills only exacerbated the symptoms I was already experiencing. LUPRON DEPOT (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE): Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread.
