LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Endometriosis/Adenomyosis Hot Flashes, Night Sweats, Insomnia, Memory Loss, Muscle & Bone Pain, Weight Gain, Headaches, Dizziness, Acne, Increased Pain, Extreme Fatigue, Swelling, Palpitations, Moodiness/Weepiness, Vision Problems, additional ovarian cysts I would think twice about taking this drug for endo, adeno, or fibroids. It only offers a temporary fix (if it works) & the side effects probably outweigh the benefits for most every woman. I still have 5 injections to go & may not finish them!! F 35 1 months

5  Endrometriosis Hot-flashes,moodyness,spotting I took this about 6 years ago and was able to conceive 2 children . I am just now in pain again. So we are trying it again. F 27 4 months

1  Endometriosis I experienced nearly 50% of the side effects listed from the TAP Pharmaceutical patient information sheet including depression, hot flashes, mood swings, fever/chills, fluid retention, weight gain, joint/muscle pain, nausea, dizziness and muscle spasms. I have taken two 3-month 11.25 mg shots. I may be part of the <5% who experienced side effects during the hormone therapy. As far as I know the endometriosis is gone, but the side effects have not because my hormones are "totally off". In my case, a hysterectomy requiring 6 weeks recovery would be better than 6 months plus of uncontrollable side effects. I was also given Premarin .3 (estrogen) by my OB-GYN to help with some of the discomfort--it also has a list of side effects. Low estrogen levels can lead to other problems. A word to the wise: Be very careful. F 33 6 months

4  prostate cancer Hot flashes, weight gain (22#), muscle weakness, swelling in extremities. I work out 5-6 times a week, but have backed off on my running program. The extra weight makes it hard on the feet and legs. Hopefully the treatment will work in conjunction with the cryosurgery in a few months. M 55 5 days

2  Pelvic Pain, PCO, Menorrhagia I am on add-back therapy, so I don't experience hot flashes. Although, I am very irritable and borderline depressed at times. I also continue to spot with occasional heavy bleeding. The pelvic pain has decreased considerably because it EXPENSIVE !!! This drug is basically the last resort until a hysterectomy. F 29 4 months

1  Endometriosis Hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia weight gain, fluid retention, depression. It was discovered that I had severe endometriosis during a laporascopy that was performed for a the removal of an ovarian cyst. A surgery that was to only last for an hour and 1/2 turned into a 4 hour ordeal as my surgeon excised scar tissue that had adhered itself from my bowel to my abdomenal wall, appendix, etc. I was told that a three month cycle of injections would help tremendously. I am not taking my 3rd and final injection as I just cannot handle this for another few months (understand that the effects of the medicine linger for 2 months following your last injection).  2  Endometriosis Severe mood swings, night sweats, hot flashes, insomnia, mild achne, depression, bloating, headaches, loss in sexual drive. I have improvement in my overall symtoms, however I feel that the side effects of this drug are not worth the results. My personal relationship has suffered severly due to the Depression and mood swings. I still have some mild discomfort and pain, I would research this drug and all the potential side effects before beginning treatment. My first dose was given to me right after I came out of surgery and I did not know what was being given. I have been recommended to continue 3months more of treatment with add-back to help prevent bone loss. I am not certain I will continue this. Be careful before saying yes. F 27 7 months

4  fibroids a few minor hot flashes, very slight vag. dryness. Otherwise nothing - I'm one month into a 3-month course. Just to give some perspective ? I?m 35 and have been on Lupron for a month now, for fibroids. I?ll be on it for three months. I was also scared after reading all of the negative stuff about side effects. But I think it?s important to remember that while there are side effects, not everyone has them, and not to the same extent. Even more importantly, the people who tend to post on sites like this are the people who?ve had the worst problems and need to vent or get support about them. The problems are definitely real ? I don?t want to downplay the symptoms any women here have had. But not everyone has outcomes like that. So I wanted to post my experience, just so that people who are considering Lupron know that a 3-6 month nightmare isn?t inevitable. In the first month, the only thing I?ve experienced is a few mild hot flashes, mostly at night. I pull the blankets off, I go back to sleep. No big deal. I haven?t had any fatigue, moodiness, weight gain, pain, severe hot flashes, or anything else ? nothing. I know I?m lucky ? but I also know I?m not the only one having an easy time with this?.you just don?t usually hear the stories from women who are doing fine. F 35 1 months

4  severe periods, fibroids HOT FLASHES night sweats, Depression. This has really worked for me for the severe bleeding. The 1st shot lasted about 7 months, I have just had another one. I am at menopausal age and trying to get through this without surgery. This seems to be working for me. F 51 9 days

2  Endometriosis Night sweats, nausea, increased migraines, fatigue, weight gain( at the rate of 5 pounds a month) I am also a Fibromyalgia sufferer this worsened my already painful tender areas especially with swelling and weight gain. I would strongly recommend for anyone with underlying issues to NOT take this TX. It has controlled the endometreosis but as others have said I would have rather had major surgery than dealt with all the side effects. I would have taken my 4rth out of 6 injections this month and have opted out of TX. Some of you may not experience all the difficulties but I would recommend having treatment for several months before posting and reporting no problems, they may sneak up on you. F 27 4 months
