1  Seasonal allergies After about 1 week of her on this I notice she was extremely hyper. Difficult for her to fall asleep and waking up with nightmares about bugs. She would scream to the top of her lungs horrified! 3 weeks into into taking them meds I noticed her blinking her eyes a lot more than usual and today she starting doing something weird with her lower lip. Well after reading all the reviews I have seen she is not the only one that has had the same side effect. I asked myself at first a few days ago could it be the medicine??? It’s the only thing I’m giving there other than a multivitamin. Today was her last dose since I read this after I gave her the meds. Why do they still sell this!!! Never again will I give any of my kids this crap! F 7 30 days

1  Allergies Severe depression and anxiety!!! I took this medication and I had two panic attacks at work. I work in a stressful position and I normally handle it well. At the time of the first panic attack, I was writing a report when I suddenly became overwhelmed with thoughts about my abilities to do my job. I had a panic attack and almost burst into tears. I even had unnecessary thoughts about suicide. The second time, a co-worker was telling me about someone mistreating her and I had a panic attack on her behalf! At this point, I noticed a connection to the Claritin and did not take the next dose. Immediately, my mind cleared and I felt that I could rule the world! F 36 4 days

1  Allergies Exhaustion, foggy head, weigh gain, out of it feeling I have allergic asthma. I am very allergic to dust, and perfume. Unfortunately, that is everywhere. I have trouble taking adult doses of medicine... So I take the kids dose. I took Claritin for 3 months until now. I gained 6 pounds. I woke up tired. I had no energy. Felt like I had a thyroid issue. They say it is non-drowsy,but it made me sleepy, even taking it before bed time did not help. The weight gain was a bad side effect. I guess I'll just lump it. No more allergy meds for me. I'd rather have my nose run. F 48 3 months

1  night time nasal congestion Very bad insomnia, heart pain, gassy feel in stomach, head ache Am reading these reviews at 4am because I cannot sleep, am feeling chest tightness and heart pain. I had coffee at 5pm which doesn't affect my ability to sleep but with taking Claritin at 10 pm, I can't sleep. I have taken it in the past in the evening and sometimes it gave me a headache, but I will avoid Claritin from now on. F 57 1 days

1  Allergies The first couple of days of taking Claritin, I was ok. I have been in remission of fibromyalgia for a year with mild flare ups a couple of times a month. Then on the fourth day, I woke up thinking I had meningitis or West Nile Virus because the pain was EXCRUCIATING! I KNEW! I KNEW, IT WAS THE CLARITIN. While it provided relief for allergies, the severe pain was intolerable . I told myself if I had to live like that, I didn't know if I could survive. As a result, a dark depression was present. After being off of claritin a couple of days, I'm slowly feeling better. I just hope everything goes back to normal. Thank goodness for this forum which provides an avenue to share our experiences, good or bad!! F 53 6 days

1  Tree and pollen allergies Took this medicine and did not like the side effects. I woke up with a headache. My mouth and nasal passages were so dry. Throughout the day I had lightheadness and dizziness. Also some weird confusion like feeling with anxiety. That was enough for me. I took this before with the same side effect everytime. Not for everyone. The dizziness should be an indicator to try something else for the allergy. F 41 1 days

2  Severe seasonal Allergies First I must note, I tend to be very sensitive to medications in general. I typically take a children’s dose of Benedryl when my grass and/or tree pollen allergies begin to take me down, but I’ve been looking for a non anticholinergic alternative. My sister uses Claritin, so I thought I’d try. The 10mg dose made me feel drowsy and inebriated, so by day two I cut it down to a children’s dose, taken in the evening to mitigate the drowsiness I felt. For a few days, it worked great. And in general continued to work well for my allergy symptoms... but then I began to feel quite depressed. My moods are generally pretty even, and this felt extremely out of character. I began to feel a constant urge to cry and even had suicidal thoughts out of nowhere. I couldn’t get anything done, and couldn’t focus on activities I usually love. One day I was visiting my mom, and became overcome (unprovoked) by a mix of sadness and anger; I locked myself in her laundry room and sobbed uncontrollably on the floor for two hours. I felt nuts. Completely out of emotional control and not myself. I knew from having experienced a minor psychological reaction to a nasal spray about a decade ago that it may be related to medication. Claritin was my only one. So after that day, I stopped. The mood symptoms have gradually declined and I am almost to normal (it’s been about a week). I’m still having some random mood swings, but the depression cloud is lifting and There ought to be far more warnings about these type of side effects, especially on OTC drugs. It breaks my heart to imagine how many people don’t connect the dots and end up in therapy and on antidepressants just to mitigate symptoms from an OTC antihistamine. F 33 14 days

1  Pollen Allergies Huge Anxiety, depression! Light headed, dizzy. Burning feeling in sinuses. Burning severe headache upon wakening two mornings in a row. Shaky feeling, fast heartbeat. Overall feeling of unwellness, uneasiness. Been 24 hrs since last pill and I still don’t feel good, lightheaded/dizziness is gone. Never Again! Beware!! Searched how long stays in system and supposedly 36-48 hours! I cannot wait!! This should not be OTC and taken off market! F 66 1 weeks

2  seasonal allergies Sleepiness, nausea, vomiting, poor coordination I took half a pill and was made very drowsy and out of it, kinda felt like I was quite drunk. I also experienced a good deal of nausea for about 8 hours after taking the pill - that eventually subsided and I was mildly drowsy for another day. It helped my allergy symptoms, but the side effects were too unpleasant for me to continue use. F 43 1 days

1  Dr gave me sample for hives Excruciating back pain a few hours after my first dose. I don't normally have any back pain. This came on so suddenly that I could only relate it to the drug. I took no more and have not had back pain like that again. This is a not a benign medication and it shouldn't be dispensed OTC. Doctors shouldn't be allowed to dispense samples of this after a 10 min patient visit. F 64 1 days

5  Hives in fall season None. I take as needed for itching hives in fall when I go outdoors. Works great. It isn't the strongest of the antihistamines, so I've had to take a stronger one a couple times in my life. However all other antihistamines had side effects for me but Claritin didn't. M 40 10 years

4  allergies, environmental type none Generic loratadine works fairly well for allergies. Great for hives/itching. Non-sedating. I take everyday and it helps a lot. Works for 24 hours on the dot. I know I need to take it because I start itching. Not quite as good as Allegra but a hell of a lot cheaper. M 20 1 years

1  allergies and sinus Made my symptoms WORSE. After an hour I was sneezing even more. Excessive post nasal drip and itchy watery eyes came next. The whole day was mostly blowing my nose and hacking out phlegm. By bed time my eyes were itchy and the inside of my nose felt like it was on fire. Will not take it ever again. F 44 1 days

1   My daughters nose had been running and we were told that perhaps Claritin could help with the symptoms. I gave her 24hr bubblegum flavor, which is packaged into a chewable tablet. Took this for at least three days. After the third day of taking Claritin, I noticed her fairly clear speaking became choppy and developed into a noticeable stutter. I have not given her any more dosages. Closely monitoring her. This is now 5 days after the last dosage and she is still stuttering and having a tough time getting her words out. I’m so deeply saddened by this event and shocked that others have experienced similar side effects. Her seasonal symptoms were not even relived (runny nose). F 2 3 days
