CIPRO  (CIPROFLOXACIN HYDROCHLORIDE):  This medication is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. Ciprofloxacin belongs to a class of drugs called quinolone antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for virus infections (such as common cold, flu). Using any antibiotic when it is not needed can cause it to not work for future infections.   FDA Approval Date: 1987-10-22 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  proctitis, post-resection Muscle soreness Without Cipro, I am basically disabled. I get painful rashes only Nystatin will take care of, and the anus and rectum are inflamed enough that I have to "go" every 20 minutes. Combined with the rash and constriction due to inflammation, I am in pain and unable to work most of the day. The choice is simple: Cipro, or Naproxen Sodium + Clortrimazole/Nystatin + Lanacaine + Immodium. People need to read up on anything they are taking - every person is different, and your doctor has no way of knowing how it will affect you. Yet. M 35 24 months

5  severe mycobacterial hand infection I have been on a odessey for the last 15 months fighting a double hand infection after accidentally impailing myself with a screwdriver. 8 weeks of IV (5x/day -amicacin; immipenin); two surgeries and the current daily dose of 1500 mg of cipro since 8/09 along with 1000 mg biaxin an 1600 mg bactrim. I will be getting off these drugs 12/13 and am counting the days. Don't like to talk about almost losing my life to microbes but am grateful for an outstanding ID doctor and these meds. I don't let myself thing too much about the (thank god) minor side effects. Its scary to think about our future where these medicines will become ineffective due to overuse. I had no choice to poison my body for so long but can tell you I would never take cipro for a sore throat or other minor ailment where there are alternatives. I had strong joint pain early on that has become less of an issue. I try to exercise everyday as it really helps. Insomnia has been a problem since day one and need 1/2 a M 51 14 months

1  Erysipelas . I have been on and off of Cipro many times during the last 15 years. I used to go for long walks with our dogs and was able to walk 10km without tiring. One day, I suddenly could not stand up from a chair. My joints felt stiff and painful and I could barely walk. On another occasion, my feet suddenly felt like the bones were rubbing against each other, with sudden sharp pains. I could not walk and was diagnosed with ankle arthrosis. Then my knees started to be constantly painful and make noises, and I was diagnosed with knee arthrosis. I can hardly walk any distance anymore, stairs are almost impossible and standing up, walking, climbing stairs causes lots of pain. I am on disability since I was 51 yrs old and am permanently retired now, at age 58! If I want to visit a museum, or recreation park or any place where I have to walk a lot, I'd need a wheel chair to get around. In spite of losing about 35kg of weight, my problems and pains still get worse year after year. This all sta After getting allergies from all other antibiotics, Cipro was the only I could take to reduce infection of my legs due to erysipelas. At times I took one package to get rid of an infection, other times I was put on Cipro/antibiotics long term to prevent new infection. I am on antibiotics again, this time Cefuroximaxetil, apparently have no or little side effects from this and... no allergy! I suggest trying any and all other antibiotics before agreeing to cipro, even if the cipro might help quickly, but the risks that come with it are too high. You risk ruining your active physical life completely, and that can lead to depression,too... plus the constant pain and medication taken for that can have a strong impact on your body and emotional life! Be very careful if you do take this drug, rest a lot and watch for signs of side effects and sudden pain. Have seen people with worse conditions than mine who actually are in a wheel chair now after taking cipro and tearing a meniscus tendon! I wouldn't mind if they finally take this drug off the market, even if I am one of the people who had been depending on it! F 58 11 months

1  sinus infection stiff joints, severe knee, heel, elbow and lower back pain. I was given Cipro for a sinus infection, I had surgery to remove a obstruction that had blocked my left sinus, they tried everything bractrim, serveral other antiboitics to clear up the severe infection I had. Last resort was Cipro, and unforturnately I had to have serveral doses of it three weeks at a time as the infection was reacurring. I have to say it did finely clear up the infection but I'm paying for it now, feel like I went from the frying pan into the fire sometimes. I think the damage to my body is done. I've been in pain for a very long time. Would not recomend taking Cipro to anyone. I've had severe pain in my left knee for over a year and a half, the orthopedic surgeon has givin me cortizone shots and it helps with the pain. F 51 6 months

1  Minor infection Deep aching arm pain. Deep aching (unbearable) muscle pain in upper torso. Sense of being 'out of it' as if drunk during courses. Massive fatigue completely out of character always sleeping. Severe nausea and difficulty eating normal food, consequently weight loss and loss of muscle and fitness. Developed severe IBS where gut would paralyse after eating with exertion. Back pain. Neck pain. Shoulder problems. Tight muscles as if they lost all their collagen. Eventually severe weakness lost use of arms entirely, improved after months but unable to withstand repetitive use or normal level of activity to this day years later. Many effects came one month later and have not gone away. Why is there no zero rating !? Stay clear unless your life depends on it. The doctors and the medication leaflet don't come close to warning the public adequately. Doctors are so ill informed about this class of drugs and often don't recognise the side effects as they emerge and that puts patients at risk of not realising the cause of the new health problems and then taking it again. Many will never make the links to their poor health after these drugs. Side effects can be delayed (Dr Beatrice Golomb describes why this might be) and symptoms can remit and relapse. That sounds strange but one thing to remember with this drug is 'collagen degradation'. Sometimes the problems don't hit until you really try to load the tissues. You can feel fine again but then you try to go to the gym and your body can't withstand it. The warnings don't come close to conveying this reality. Just imagine how many cases of fibromyalgia and other pain conditions, 'idiopathic' neuropathies, and overuse injuries are really side effects of cipro?????? This is why the side effects look rare because side effects get diagnosed as other problems by unsuspecting or unbelieving doctors. F 30 5 months

4  Q-Fever Following a very long diagnostic process it was finally determined that I have Q-Fever. I was prescribed Cipro and Doxycylin together and after 4 months of treatment my antibody titer's are almost back to normal. In the last month I developed severe pain in my pinky toe going about 1/3 of the way down the side of my foot and severe knee pain. I feel like a 30 year old women with 80 year old knees. I told my doctors and they decided to take me off of the Cipro. Although I have experienced a lot of other minor side effects I don't know which medication is causing them - extremely oily skin and hair, easily fatigued, headaches, frequent colds, RLS, weird sleeping inconsistencies. I have not noticed an improvement in 3 weeks and I am wondering if my knees and foot will get better. Since I have been off of the Cipro I have also started breaking out like a teenager all over my face and neck (and I am still on the Doxycylin which is used to treat acne). F 30 4 months

5  Allergy to near all other a-biotics C diff colitis - bacteria in colon caused by antibiotic use, and treatment of nacrosis in left arm tissue around dialysis shunt. Prescribed along with a debridement ointment. Although I have been prescribed cipro this round of surgeries and hospital stays, I would have to say that the majority of the time I have been on this drug it has treated me very well. I think it suffice to say that I could have gotten any number of side effects from antibiotics after this length if time, which I pro does not cause for me. It's def alwaybeenthe goo to drug for me.  2  UTI headache, severe heartburn, stomach pain this medicine does not help!! i've been taking cipro and other antibiotics for a severe uti that I've had on and off for a few months. The medicine has not helped me. I'm really worried. I started feeling severe stabbing pains by my belly button the other day...it was so bad i thought it was my appendix. Yesterday, I've had severe heartburn. I feel so sick. I figure this must be due to the antibiotics. I have muscle pain...my neck hurts and my upper back hurts. I've been crying because NOTHING is helping me. Of course I have a yeast infection because of all this antibiotics. my breasts even hurt sooo badly!!! but the worst is this heartburn. has anyone else experienced horrible heartburn on cipro??  1  Prostate Pain My doctor gave cipro to take for three months for chronic prostate pain. He said it could`nt hurt anything! This is in 1999. No problems until I finished the drug. Right after finishing the 3 month course I started vomiting with diarrhea.I have not been able to go for more than a few months without this happening! I have gone from 200lbs to a 170lbs. I have not been able to put the weight back on, because if i eat to much I get sick. I also have had severe joint pain in my ankles, knees, shoulders and inside of my elbows. The drug did not help my prostate problem. I now have chronic yeast infection because of the drug. I found a book titled "Healthy Digestion the Natural Way" it has been very helpful. After taking Garlic Extract,Glutamine,NAC,Alpha Lipoic Acid and Grapefruit Seed Extract(NutriBiotic Defense Plus) the pain in my prostate is mostly gone!(Such a relief) I now have to be very careful about what I eat. No sugar at all! I`m very sorry I took the drug. It has ruined my life! I would love to see the makers of this drug sued right into Hell! Plus doctors need to learn how dangerous the drugs they prescribe are. Some of them don`t have a clue. M 55 3 months

1  Protatitis Ended up using a cane for a year. Achilles injured. All major joints ache, hips, knees, and neck especially. Peripheral neuropathy. Numb lower face to my chest that occurred during the 2nd month of use and has not gone away, 2 years later and counting. Chest pain. Occasional micro seizure like events. Fatigue. Bone pain. Muscle pain. Possibly nerve pain. Anxiety. Regret. I guess these things happen? Only positive is that my Achilles doesn't hurt as much, but my joints seem to be rapidly getting worse. Scary stuff. Trying to remain positive but I keep having symptoms, hence why I am here 2 years after ingesting nearly 90 pills. I took it for just under three months everyday. Mode of action is discovered. Doctors in India did a study and discovered after just 72 hrs, your bloods natural antioxidant was depleted by almost 80%. Imagine the implications of such an oxidative stress event. Cartilaginous lesions implicated as well. M 29 3 months
