AYGESTIN  (NORETHINDRONE ACETATE):  This medication is used to treat women with abnormal bleeding from the uterus. It is also used to treat women who have stopped having menstrual periods for several months (amenorrhea) but who are not pregnant or going through menopause. In addition, this medication is used to treat a condition (endometriosis) in which tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus is found outside the uterus in the abdomen/pelvic area, causing painful/irregular periods. Norethindrone is a type of female hormone (progestin). It is like the hormone progesterone that your body makes naturally. This medication works by stopping the normal growth of the uterus lining during the menstrual cycle and signaling hormone changes in the uterus to restore normal menstrual periods. This medication must not be used to test for pregnancy. Progestins are not effective in preventing miscarriages.   FDA Approval Date: 1982-04-21 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  Endometriosis In the beginning, nothing. I started taking Aygestin in combination with the Lupron shot to help shrink the endometriosis after a lap. surgery. I've been side effect free for 14 years! I did have some weight gain, but I will take it over the pain I was having I did great for 14 years. Now I've begun to have some very light spotting and cramping. It happened for about a week in July and then again in September. It's now happening about every other week. I'm not sure if this is a side effect of the Aygestin and that my body is just too used to it now or what? I don't know if menopause is starting (I just turned 40) or if I just need to up my dose. I did call my doc. two weeks ago and he said to just make sure I'm taking it at the same time every day (which I do 98% of the time). I've never been able to find anyone who's been on it as long as I have been to see if they have any of the spotting/cramping that I have after all this time. F 40 14 years

5  Very long, heavy periods None Very effective. Have had no bleeding in 10 years. I'm 55 now; however, I can't figure out if I menopausal or not. Drug has messed up test results. F 55 10 years

5  endometriosis, fibroids At first I experienced hot flashes, irritability, joint pain, swelling, and mood swing, decreased sex drive, and extreme fatigue. The symptoms started getting better the longer I took the meds. This medicine has worked wonders for me. I had two surgeries and countless other procedures but aygestin was the only thing that got rid of all my endo pain, shrunk my fibroids and helped my interstitial cystitis. This medicine takes time to work and the benefits out weigh the side effects. F 34 7 years

4  endometriosis No period at all while on this med. Mood swings. Anxiety. NO sex drive. Actually had aversion to sex. Stopped taking because I wanted to decrease amount of meds I was taking. Took 2 months for period to return and 6 months for sex drive to return. Haven't had much endo pain. Will probably do hysterectomy soon. Pleased with med for endo pain- took it all away. Almost killed my marriage, however, due to loss of sex drive. F 35 7 years

4  Endometriosis/Heavy bleeding/cramps Acne, spotting, moody, weight gain, dark spots on face, extra facial hair I have been on this drug for a very long time. I had 6 endo surgery's a D&C and had horrible periods for years. This has cured all of that but I am a smoker and I read that I should NEVER be taking this while I smoke and am over 35years old (because of blood clots and stroke). I will be going to my Dr next week and will go over this fact with him. It has never been mentioned to me that this was such a risk. I want to come off this medication but my only hope is a hysterectomy and then I will just be on another artifical hormone anyway. F 43 7 years

4  Heavy prolonged bleeding from fibro It has controlled the bleeding very well. Also the pain is almost completely gone. I have noticed small dark spots on skin. Recently diagonosed with high blood pressure but that was after taking for 6 years. Weight gain of about 20 lbs. Hoping to soon go off aygestin because I am going thru menopause and should be able to quit taking this medicine soon. It has saved me from a hysterectomy. F 48 6 years

5  heavy bleeding, horendous cramping No side effects! This was a miracle and I avoided having a hysterectomy. Periods stopped completely - no side effects at all and only had to take 5 mg. per day. I went from periods so bad I could not function to feeling great and no periods at all. I have just stopped taking this a few days ago as I am now 55 and hoping all this is fially over - but it really made my life so much better! F 55 5 years

4  Continuous bleeding or no periods Headaches, minor breakouts I was having super long periods (like 2 months long!) or if not, I was missing periods. I could not handle taking these meds every day as it really affected my mood. But sort of by accident I discovered, I can take ONE pill a month and four days later I get a normal (a bit lighter) period. My OB/GYN says "It's not supposed to work that way, but since it is working... let's not change it!" F 44 4 years

4  Heavy uncontrolled periods Weight gain & facial acne. This medication has made a huge difference for me. It stopped my heavy periods , but I do not know if I am even close to being menopausal, which was the whole point of taking this medication to carry me thru. My blood did not indicate anything as far as hormones levels, so we cannot tell. I had three expert opinions prior to being put on this drug. My problem is my current OBGYN is very nasty to me, and she wants to take me off of it. I am so nervous every time I see this woman that I think I am going to have to switch doctors. I am also thinking about going back to one of the original specialist to see if it is ok to stay on for a few more years, if not how do I wean off. I was just wondering if anyone who has been on this medication for a while had expirienced any side effects getting off of it. I am worried about getting that heavy cycle again, along with physical changes it could pose to me such as depression, hair and skin problems, possibly fueling estrogen. If anyone has been on this drug long term and could shed some light on how they got off of it and what effects it had on them, can you please post on this board. I would greatly appreciate any information on your expirience since the internet does not have very much information on this drug and long term use. Thank you so much. F 51 4 years

2  Endometriosis I started taking this 3 days after my second laparoscopic excision of endometriosis in 1/2018. At first it was amazing, no cramps, pain, or heaving bleeding. 3 months in- gastric reflux so bad (I had previously been managing my vulnerability to reflux with diet and PPI) but this was relentless, it damaged my esophagus and I ended up having a major surgery to fix (nissen). Plus- chronic nausea, dizziness, constipation, bladder spasms, severe weight gain yet decreased appetite, rage, depression/anxiety- to the point of almost taking my life multiple times, restless sleepless nights, night sweats, chills, did I mention the RAGE, not just lack of libido but full blown aversion to anything related to sex, acne on shoulders and back . Oh- and within 1 year of starting I ended up being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes- I assume related to my genetic vulnerability and the potential of this medication to cause hyperglycemia and extreme stress on the body (triggers for those vulnerable to T1D). I have cried and cried to my doctors (GI, PCP, GYNE, endocrinologist, and endometriosis specialists) no ONE mention that all my issues could be related to this medication, because they all said- if it were related it would have started immediately upon taking, not a few months in. I wish I had found this review site years ago. I plan to stop ASAP. I am scared, but nothing can be as bad as this has made me feel. Please reach out if you have stopped this med and let me know how long it's taken you to feel like a human being worth life again. F 35 3 years

5   extreme weight gain, super tired at random times, brain farts, hot flashes, mood swings in the beginning, leg cramps at times i had uncontrolled bleeding to the point of needing a blood transfusion (a new Dr,) and a D&C, Two weeks later it started up all over again, Fourth trip to the ER later, I was finally given this and was told to take 4 the first day, until the bleeding subsided and stopped. It took a few days but it finally stopped and was an answer to my prayers. I went from "bleeding a river" (said by an ER Dr.) to not having to stress over it anymore. I wish there weren't side effects, but I certainly would take them over the alternative ANY day, F 48 2 years

4  Severe bleeding and hormone imbalance I was in severe pain and bleeding couldn't stand up or nothing. I couldn't function at all. Just cry in pain. It lasted for three months. Then I seen a different doctor and was put on Agestin or Norithindrone. It stopped my pain and blowing with in a day. Now I have been on it for two years and within that time, I have rapidly gained weight. I was 120 and now 171, it has caused my hair to stop growing, not sleeping good, blood pressure issues and shortness of breath. I feel as though I made a deal with the devil, he took away my bleeding and pain just to sacrifice other things. I don't feel young and beautiful and slim anymore, instead I feel as though I look like Petunia Pig. My gynecologist blamed it on my binge eating after the loss of my Husband. Not so.... my family I stopped eating for weeks. F 55 2 years

3  To stop my Heavy periods. I have been taking Aygestin for 30 months! Up until 4 days ago I had no problems. It completely stopped my period. Then 4 days ago I woke up to Spotting & Cramping. I went to the Emergency room. They did all kind of tests, and labs only to tell me that they think it may be because Of my two uterine Fibroids. Now I'm still.cramping & spotting. I have a Doctor's appointment tomorrow. For 30 months I had no problem with this drug until now. Now I'm worried that the spotting & cramping will not stop. 46 2 years

2  Control Endometreosis Pain After 1.5 years on the pill, I developed Pulmonry Embolism (Blood Clots in my Lungs!) that nearly killed me. i was getting Lupron injections the last 6 months of this pill. Terrible combination. I regret taking the pill, and i strongly recommend that blood clots are way worse than the benefits of the pill. My doctor never discussed risks of the pill til after i was in the hospital diagnosed with blood clots. she said the Progestin-Only bc pill was lower in risk for causing clots, but i got them still. the manufacturers state the risks, but my doc didn't think they applied to me. i wouldn't have either. i was healthy fit active. i strongly advise you look at other options. i have heard SO many women's blood clot/from pill stories since i got mine. I don't think my Endo pain was much reduced, altho i have to say my "mood" became more even on the pill. F 44 1.5 years

5  heavy bleeding for prolonged time swelling of legs and feet which was taken care of by a simple water pill. it stopped the bleeding within a few hours the day i started taking it and have been on it for almost a year and a half, but am afraid when stopping, the bleeding will start up again and we are ready for kids now...  5  Heavy Bleeding This medication has been very helpful to me. Basically holding back my periods and preventing me from having a hysterectomy at this time. I just hope to use these to get myself into menopause which I don't think is very far off. I have had the worst heavy periods in the past few years and this stuff just stopped them in their tracks. Although, I did have one 2 day breakthough very heavy, but It stopped. I have had noticed my skin is more acne prone, so I have switched to acne products and for the most part it is under control. I seem to have a little joint pain, but I am not sure this is the med doing it. I have to say I am more depressed than usual. I cannot comment on weight since I have been eating out a lot the past few months, so I don't think the few extra pounds are from the aygestin. Overall it has made a huge difference for me.  4  endo and ovarian cysts I had severe bleeding for years and multiple "soccer ball size" ovarian cysts, one ovary removed. i was anemic at one point. Cramps so bad i would vomit and be stuck in bed for 2 days each month. I went thru hell. This med had stopped my cycle so i am pain free. But now i have the weight gain, hot flashes while sleeping, dark patches on nose and around mouth after a day in the sun (it fades). It took a while to get my body ajusted but most have eased up. I would choose those side affects over the MISERY i was living for years. I was always in some sort of pain. Always. I do feel like its time to up the dosage tho so i will discuss at next doc appt. I was too scared to try lupron so im glad i did this. F 29 9 months
