AYGESTIN  (NORETHINDRONE ACETATE):  This medication is used to treat women with abnormal bleeding from the uterus. It is also used to treat women who have stopped having menstrual periods for several months (amenorrhea) but who are not pregnant or going through menopause. In addition, this medication is used to treat a condition (endometriosis) in which tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus is found outside the uterus in the abdomen/pelvic area, causing painful/irregular periods. Norethindrone is a type of female hormone (progestin). It is like the hormone progesterone that your body makes naturally. This medication works by stopping the normal growth of the uterus lining during the menstrual cycle and signaling hormone changes in the uterus to restore normal menstrual periods. This medication must not be used to test for pregnancy. Progestins are not effective in preventing miscarriages.   FDA Approval Date: 1982-04-21 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Endometrial protection during perim Felt okay at first. Then increased anxiety, mood swings, depression. Difficulty sleeping, feeling tearful. Then anxiety was horrible, couldn't regulate my moods. Very uncomfortable psychologically. The feeling of getting on a horrible carnival ride and not being able to get off. I stopped taking and felt relief + back to normal after 2-3 days. F 40 13 days

1  ER visit for excessive blood I know that I don't do well with synthetic progesterone, but I thought I would give it a chance. The first few days I actually felt surprisingly good I thought maybe it was a miracle drug, but the sixth day I woke up, unable to cope depression, fatigue, dizziness, anger. My personality was very different. I think this drug might start out mild, and then turn on you after a week or two, according to what I’ve been reading in here. I’m looking for another solution, and I stopped taking the drug. Perhaps ablation. For me my mental health is too important to jeapordize. F 52 6 days

1  PCOS-no period Dizzy all day every day, nausea so bad it hurt my abdomen, extreme cramping, lots of clotting when my period finally came around. I did develop a few dark patches on my face as well, I would also constantly shake and be cold while on this medication. I was only able to muddle through 7 days of the 12 prescribed. It had shook up my mental health so badly that I could not continue the medication, it felt like putting myself into a prison. My mind was the prison, so depressed I was thinking of suicide and harming myself, sleepless nights for 7 nights due to heightened anxiety, then came the vigorous mood swings and rage, crying spells, and sense of being alone/worthless. Even after stopping the medication, I am still trying to repair the damage and emotional toll it did on me in just a weeks time. I would prefer to not take this medication again. I have used Provera and it has worked just fine for me with minimal side effects. F 25 12 days

1  Endometrial Hyperplasia After one month of taking the 5 mg. pill, I suddenly felt nauseated and dizzy daily, and I began to bleed to the point where I am changing my tampon every two hours and have to use pads as a back up. Never mind the ACCIDENTS that have to be washed daily! I also have severe cramping. This has been going on for four days straight. Due to all of these symptoms, I had to take yet another medication daily for nausea and NSAIDS for the groin cramping. Who needs this? How can you live or work experiencing this misery? Mind you, I am in menopause and no longer have ovaries! The doctor was sympathetic, but I took myself off this poisonous, medical roller coaster ride! I will have a biopsy and/or D&C or surgery and go from there. Quality of life is everything! When I was on the low dose tricyclic birth control, it changed my menstrual symptoms for the better. I had no clue about the nightmare ahead. What happens when you finally get off of or take yourself off this medication? Do you actually get better? No one knows! My doctor could not tell me how much longer would have my PERIOD and associated symptoms. Do your research and take control over your health. By the way, insist on sedation if you are going to have an in-office uterine biopsy due to Covid-19, etc. It is extremely painful even though the cervix is numbed. Your doctor will have to prescribe a controlled substance. I was shocked when I had these violent symptoms after having had no symptoms for the first month I had been taking Aygestin. There is a significant list of medications that Aygestin and its generic form, norethidrone acetate, react with. Educate and advocate for yourself! F 55 30 days

I experienced abdominal cramping soon after taking this medication for the entire time I took it including severe and relentless pain in back of my calve, SEVERE mood changes including depression and rage. Doctor never told me about depression or mood change risk even though I have a long history of major depression disorder. I am stopping this drug permanently. I also had very severe night sweats that lasted the entire month I took this drug. Awful medication I would never take this again. F 48 1 months

1  5 week long period Hot flashes, insomnia, fatigue, irritability Dizziness started about a week into the pill. The pill did not stop my bleeding. It controlled it so that I didn’t have a heavy flow but I still continued bleeding for 7 weeks. I came off of it after about 2 weeks on the pill. I think I’m still suffering the side effects and I’ve been off of it for a week. I’m extremely fatigued and dizzy. And have insomnia. Anyone have any similar effects of coming off this pill? After effects? F 39 1 days

1  Abnormal bleeding Bloating, weight gain, ferocious appetite, headaches, leg pain, nipple soreness, excessive vaginal discharge, night sweats, raging anger, acne, and excessive vaginal discharge. I first experienced calf pain 1 day after starting this med. That was followed by a very strong vaginal odor and very sore nipples the second day. My appetite also really increased the second day. Symptoms worsened with the onset of nagging headache and very heavy, thick, white, cottage cheese like discharge by day three. The vaginal odor began to subside by day four. I have to note that the source of the odor was not from the discharge, but actually from the labia. I'd never experienced anything like this before. My boyfriend didn't notice the odor but O certainly did. I know how I smell and it's never like that! All other symptoms mentioned developed over the next several days. I didn't feel I could be around people because of my increasing anger. I wanted to punch everyone I encountered in the throat. The blurred vision, acne, and skin darkening bothered me so much by day 10, that I just decided to stop taking this medication, no tapering. Two days after stopping it my period arrived. I was actually due to start my period two days after starting the med so I will say, it kept my period at bay, but the cons definitely outweighed the pros here so...back to the drawing board. I'm really sick and tired of having two periods a month though. This is torture! F 38 10 days

1  Long, extremely heavy period Unbelievable depression and uncomfortable mental state, rage, confusion, dizziness, acne, insomnia. Some of the worst depression I've ever experienced, I've felt suicidal at times. Couldn't take it for as long as I was supposed to, thankfully my period stopped. I will never take this medication again. I've been off of it now for almost two weeks and I still feel completely messed up neurologically and emotionally. My sense of time is messed up, my circadian rhythm, my memory, everything. Feel like I'm in hell. F 30 5 days

1  endometriosis/lupron add back leg cramps/extreme food cravings/intense highs and lows with mood Im a 25 year old who has been struggling with painful periods that leave me bedridden for up to 10 days. I had an endo laparoscopy where they removed all of the endometriosis. Following surgery I was recommended to get the Lupron shot which i allowed my gyno to do and give me this add back of aygestin. This drug led me to think I was having a mental breakdown. Which it did. Gave me leg cramps and body aches that I wasted to much money seeing doctors trying to figure out if I have an autoimmune disease. Get the ok from doctor and dump down a toilet!!!!! F 25 2 months

1  Endometriosis suppression My life on this medication was a living hell. I gained 30 lbs, but I hardly ate. It did NOT help ease the cramping and daily pain in my pelvis and low back in any way. In fact, I believe the progestin may have encouraged endometriosis growth. The effects on my mood were horrible. Take the absolute worst PMS you've ever had and multiply it by ten, then live it every single day. Emotional lability, loss of libido, irritability, anxiety, and extreme depression. It was hard enough on me, but even harder on my family and friends. I was in a constant state of hormonal despair. Again, it was hell, and as far as I can tell, the only thing it helped was that it reduced my menstruation. However, note that in 6 months I still bled off and on (with no predictability) for 27 days. I also saw no reduction in my migraines either. If you are desperate you can try this med. I did because it really does help some women. I simply was not one of those. The nice thing about this particular med is that it is a daily pill, so when you decide you've had enough you can just stop. I was very relieved when I made that choice. The side effects diminished within days, although my cycle still hasn't quite returned to normal. Nor has my metabolism and the depression that it kickstarted. F 35 6 months

1  delay period Noticed extreme irritability within 48 hours. For the first time ever, extreme dryness before, during and after sex. Decided to stop taking by day #4 since I know my body well and wasn't willing to risk a longer return to how my body reacts to sex. Also, my irritability was reaking havoc on my husband. F 43 3 days
