1  insomnia Took this TOXIC benzo for 3 years. Could not sleep without it and now am trying to taper myself off it. Understand that getting off is a long process and withdrawal can last a year or longer. Did NOT realize what effect this would have on my body. Besides depression, anxiety, heart palpitations, I have developed anorexia. If you are taking this drug talk to your dr. about tapering off. It should never have been prescribed to me for such an extended period of time. F 66 3 years

5  insomnia maybe a little sleepy in morning for about an hour. this drug is like an anti-depressant for me; it gives me a sense of well being and increased confidence; maybe it's because I'm sleeping much better for the first time in 10 yrs; I get up to 7 hrs a nite as compared to maybe 4. I take 15 mg each nite while I'm already in bed reading and within 1/2 hr I'm out like a light; I do wake up a few times but go right back to sleep...this is a big improvement for me; I was waking up every hour and got virtually no deep sleep; now I have lovely dreams...nighttime entertainment! Having said all this, I think every body has unique chemistry and unfortunately you have to experiment to find a drug that works for you...I think I've found mine at last! F 63 1 months

1  insomnia Fell asleep quickly, but woke frequently during the night. After about 4 hours had to get up and take some xanax, my daytime anxiety med. Unbelievable hangover. No way would I drive feeling this way. No headache or nausea but feel as if I'm made of mercury or molten lead. Dropped to 7.5 mg last night. Just as bad. I asked for this med because I'm trying not to use too much xanax, which I was taking to get to sleep (1.5mg) as well as for daytime anxiety. I took restoril for about 6 years in the '90s and thought it was fabulous, no hangovers, etc. Now obviously it's like a totally different drug for me. I've recently tried zopiclone (Canadian Lunesta) and trazodone. The former made me feel like I had no self and the latter made me a zombie and beat the hell out of my memory, as well as giving me bad dreams. So now it's back to 1.5mg xanax an hour before bed, only problem being its short half-life, 4-6 hours, for which reason I will ask my shrink if I can try clonazepam with its longer half-life.  5  Insomnia None at all. I don't think I could function without this drug. I have had 26 surgeries in my life and was put on Restoril after a pulmonary embolism due to a fall in Nov. It has worked wonders. I have a busy life running a home and a large business. I can finally rest at night and function at 100% during the day. I thank God for the rest this drug affords.  5  insomnia nightmares Some minor memory loss if taken too early at night. Switched back to this after trying ambien. I was concerned that this drug may be addictive.  1  insomnia A little groggy in the morning and late afternoon. And some memory loss and loss of balance. Built up tolerance quickly, but never exceeded reccomended dose of 1 per night. I am addicted to this drug after almost 3 years. I started out with one 30mg a couple of times a week, then it quickly became every night. I tried to stop suddenly but went into major withdrawal. I am now under doctor supervision with tapering off. It will take many weeks, even up to a year. I am scared to death of this drug and would never reccomend it to anyone. It is a highly addictive benzoid and I feel it should not be prescibed in the large amounts that were given to me. I am having a tough time even with tapering off. I get up with withdrawal symptoms. I've heard it is harder to detox than heroine because it has such a long half life. One dose is in your blood up to 8 days. Never just quit this drug. It can cause death. F 62 3 years

4  Restless leg syndrome None After tolerating jerking legs and also some times other parts of the body for some six hours while in the hospital chest pain clinic I was given one dose of Restoril.  4   Honestly, I can't say I've had any side effects. The drug does the job when I use it. Over the past years I've taken it more often than others and I would suggest that I can build up a tolerance to it. As to it's being addictive, I don't find that. I do depend on it rather easily, but that's because I've always had a hard time getting to sleep. And that's what the drug has done for me. I can take one or a half a capsule, lay down and read and very soon I've gone to sleep....perfect. M 58

5  could not sleep due to anxiety Started with 15 mg over 2 years ago and needed 30 mg to help me sleep all night which i started about two weeks after trying the lower dose. Graduated to 60 mg after 6 more months due to more anxiety. I recently developed some memory loss, i think its more short term memory and my doctor is having me back off of it and taking rozerem. I do have some muscle twitching, not sure if its the other drugs i'm taking for depression. Not sure if its contributing to my depression, as i seem to be on a roller coaster with the depression. Definitely it helped me sleep, but I would recommend not taking it on a long term basis or talking to your doctor about other meds that would help you sleep that don't have the addictive component. I am backing off slowly and not having any withdrawal symptoms. F 56 2 years

1  sleeplessness while hospitalized I was gone, luney. Don't remember anything for 24 hours. I was in the ICU after some cardiac problems. This drug made me very agitated, spacey, tried pulling my IV out, ripping my blood pressure cuff off. By the time my Wife came in I looked like I was punch drunk. I also had a massive headache later that night. Just like a hangover. This drug is dangerous and should be taken off the market. I'm thankful I was hospitalized at the time. I was put on an IV drip to flush the drug from my system faster. M 56 1 times

5  Sleep Somewhat groggy in morning - just for 30 minutes or so... This has been an immediate cure for 10 years of being unable to stay asleep- it had gotten to be so bad, recently, that I grabbed an unused bottle of Elavil that had been prescribed (and never taken) in 1992 for post-op pain! I tried one pill and slept 7 hours for the first time in months. I used 10 mg. for one week and slept every night through. Before that, I was lucky to go 4 hours before waking up. Also, I had tried all kinds of sleep meds and nothing worked except Lunesta, that gave me a funny feeling when I woke up. I stopped taking the Elavil for two nights and reverted back to my sleepless pattern. I took it again last night and slept 7 hours again. I am amazed and really thrilled to have discovered this drug!  5  For a more restful sleep NONE - NADA - NIL !!! As long as I take it early enough to get 8 full hours of sleep, I'm all set. If not - just like any other sleeping pill, I'll feel groggy. 30 mg - 52 yrs old - 5'6" - 130 lbs. I have taken Restoril for over 20 years and it still works for me. I began with it because I was waking up with migraines - my husband reported to my doctor (and to me) that I was clenching my teeth (not grinding) in my sleep - job stress ?? So he prescribed it as a relaxant. 10 years later - I became a teacher - still stressful, but for 10 weeks in the summer I wean myself off of it and only take it if I have a PM migraine (actually Advil PM works better). During the school year I return to taking it every night. It has not lost its effectiveness for me (probably because of the break I take from it in the summer). That's 20 + years of success !!  4  insomnia None. No morning residual. Drug has pretty short half life. Worked well several months then began waking early morning again. Switched to lorazapam for several months then to clonazepam. Have read numerous references that suggest that persons that need sleep aids on long term basis need to rotate them. I've certainly seen that to be the case with all I've taken, including Ambien.  2  Insomnia None. Couldn't tell I'd taken a pill. Have been a life long insomniac. Laying awake at night one of my earliest memories. After years of using Ambien, I wanted to try something else primarily to see if I'd developed any addiction issues to Ambien. (No, btw.) Well, even the 30 mg. dose does nothing for me w/out a boost. I take no other meds so two nights ago I tried combining with a OTC sleep aid at 8 p.m., then the restoril at 10 and I slept but even then only for 4 hours and with waking several times. On it's own, it's done nothing for me. I hate that it's a capsule. I'd like to try and up the dose one night and see others have, but jumping from 30 to 60 makes me nervous.  5  insomnia/panic during PhD program I have no side effects. 30mg of Restoril had no effect. It just made me panic more at night because I though I should be sleeping and was not. 60mg of Restoril is perfect. I fall asleep, but I am not “knocked out.” I wake up throughout the night on and off because of noise but I fall back asleep in a few minutes. I am a light sleeper still on the 60mg dose, but at least I can finally sleep for several hours. I think I would have fallen apart under the stress without the help of this medication.  4  insomnia None. I have taken 15 mg for the last few years, and although I really have no side effects, I am developing a tolerance for it. I used to have no problem falling asleep, but couldn't stay asleep. Now I'm having problems with both. So I'm taking 15mg to get to sleep, then another 15mg in the middle of the night. On top of that, I've started taking Melatonin with the temazepam, which has worked so that I can fall asleep faster (temazepam could take 20 min to an hour to work for me). I am having tests done for hormonal and neurotransmitter levels. After 16 years of taking different drugs, I need to find the root of the problem, so that I don't just keep putting a bandaid on it. I want to get off these sedatives, feel better, and get my clear thinking back. F 50 3 years

I now have to start the processing of beating this addiction. I have stopped cold turkey taking the restoril and i haven't slept since. I am on day four with little to no sleep.  5  Insomnia No side effects while taking for insomnia. Sleep good through the night and no groggy feeling when waking up. I usually take 30mg, sometimes only 15mg and then 15mg half way through the night. I recently stopped taking it cold turkey...didn't know any better. NO NOT do this!! Horrible side effects and can be very dangerous. Must slowly tapper off of it. After 3 days I realized you couldn't stop cold turkey and researched it on the internet.  5  Insomnia and Anxiety Was prescribed 30 capsules of 30mg. After taking the 30mg before bedtime, I would still be awake for hours, so I would have to take another 30mg about 3 hours later but would still wake up every 90 minutes, however this time I would actually fall back asleep easily. No euphoria, just slight dizziness and very minor memory loss. In the morning no adverse effects at all. I am very much UN-concerned about addiction and though benzo withdrawl is unpleasant, try to keep a reserve stash for emergencies, or taper down in dosage before running out before refill time. This sort of discipline goes a long way. I have tried everything from herbs to beer to Ambien. Nothing worked. I find Restoril a mild anxiolytic compared to say Xanax. For insomnia there is no equal. I think there is a stigma against benzos and narcotic-type painrelievers for that matter. Fact is though, you have to do something or you may just lose your mind. I was a nighttime manic and daytime zombie before I had enough and just came out and plainly asked for Restoril. I'm glad I did. M 44 2 months

4   Tiredness, lethargy, agitation, depression, mood swings, and increase in anxiety. I have worked in the medical field for 27 years and currently work in a MD office. I was prescribed Restoril when I was unable to take any other sleep aids, i.e. Lunesta, Ambien, etc. I have a paradoxyl effect (opposite effect) to sleep aids and they would make me hyper and keep me up all night. As Restoril has been known to be prescribled with people who suffer from Restless Leg Syndrome, the physician I worked for told me to try 30 mg. nightly. The Restoril worked great. I slept 7-8 hours and woke up feeling good. I have been taking it for a little over a year, every night, and I am now experiencing mood swings, agitation, severe depression and increased ADD symptoms. I now need to start tapering off the medication but have anxiety about what I will do and how I will react. This medication works great for some people but should not be taken for a long period of time. I had no idea I had become as dependent upon it as I have. Be careful when taking this medication. It should not be taken every night like I have been taking it. F 44 1 years

5  Insomnia Stimulation of appetite. I first experienced using Restoril when it first came out in 1981, and have been back to it for the past couple of years. It is the benzodiazepine I have used the most (second most was clonazepam). I prefer temazepam over all other benzos for sleep because of its ideal lenghth of effect and relatively low addiction potential. There is one particular note of importance regarding this medication: To avoid tolerance, use the stimulant Provigil. Somehow, Provigil used in the morning obliviates tolerance problems that temazepam tends to do otherwise. As recent as yesterday, I let my psychiatrist know that little tid-bit. I recommend that anyone using Restoril notify their doctor of that recommendation. M 43 14 years

4  Insomnia Blackouts, but only if I take it too early and don't get right to bed. The blackouts are worsened if I have an alcoholic drink or two (which is completely discouraged on the warning label). If I take it too early, my husband tells me I ramble, get on the computer, and want to call friends or my mom (and often do, spending an hour or more on the phone, only to not recall ANY of the conversation!). Despite the blackouts, this is the only thing that really helps me sleep well. I do worry about taking it long-term and think I'm probably addicted.  2  insomnia I typically fall asleep but wake up within 3 hours and can't go back to sleep.Resoril has done nothing for me other than let me doze back off after I wake up 7 times each night.I'm only trying the 15 mg, and it only seems to let me sleep lightly - I'm still waking up and getting up and down all night. Frustrating.I see where other patients in this column are taking much larger doses than I am; maybe 15 mg is much too little to give me the night's sleep I'm craving.  4  severe, lifelong insomnia, anxiety morning wooze, forgetfulness I was taking ambien and they switchhed me. Ambien had stopped working but I will probably switch back to it in a few weeks when this one stops working. It's the first time I've been prescribed a benzo. It definitely makes me sleepy. Also confused. I take it in bed about half an hour or so before I want to fall asleep. I feel groggy the next morning, though, but ambien did the same. I take the 15mg dose at night. In the daytime if I am feeling strong anxiety I take a half dose. Sometimes it helps, and other times it just makes me tired. It takes too long to kick in to really do any good for that anyway. it's all right. It puts me to sleep well enough for now but I hear too much about withdrawal to want to continue taking it for very long. F 36 7 days

5  Insomnia following 18 w miscarriage leaning towards none, feel somewhat groggy next day, tho with significant sleep debt No problems falling asleep, wake up often/for hours. Ambien allowed me to sleep for 3-4 hrs then wide awake with little memory, 15mg Restoril woke up ~5 times per night but could fall back to sleep, Lunesta worked just like the Restoril, Ambien CR excluded from my insurance, 30mg Restoril - finally 7-8 hrs of continuous sleep :) Worried about tolerance &/or rebound after stopping F 35 4 days

5  innability to fall asleep None--I love restoril 15 mg. Helps me fall asleep within 30 minutes, and I wake up 6- 7 hrs later well rested with no groggy feeling like I experienced on Ambien. F 35 30 days

5  insomnia Dry mouth upon awakening If you have occasional insomnia, this is a pretty great drug. I take a 30mg capsule. In about 30 minutes, I hit the sack. I don't feel "drugged" per se, but I sleep and I stay asleep. I never take more than 2 a week, so my usage is infrequent. As such, I have zero dependency issues. Highly recommended for occasional use as needed. M 35

3  Insomnia This is strange stuff. I'm on the 22.5mg dose and my reactions are not predictable. Some nights it totally knocks me out - which is what I want. Other nights it turns me into a zombie state and I will roam around and cook/eat meals and have conversations, none of which I recall the next day. I also tend to wake up about 2 hours earlier than when I go to sleep without it. Horrific dreams some nights. Works better for me/keeps me to sleep longer than Ambien, and there is no hang-over effect in the morning. I also take Inderal for migraines and not sure how much of the waking up early and vivid dreams might be related to that. F 35 21 days

4  insomnia/racing mind at bedtime 30 mg-drowsiness, less anxiety, relaxed i was able to sleep a full night, actually woke up laughing from dream the next am, but then had a horrible nightmare two nights later...woke up in intense fear and sweating. skipped a night when drinking. nervous about dependence, though, esp. after reading others' comments-dr. only gave 30 day supply F 34 10 days

2  Insomnia The first week I was on it my mind just raced all night long, and while my body was not moving, my mind was wide awake. I actually think this is for your sleeping partner, so that they will think you are asleep because your body is not moving, hence you dont disturb them, but your mind is going a hundred miles an hour. Then it started to keep me asleep until exactly 4;30am every night and then i would be up and could not go back to sleep. I started out on 7.5mg nightly and increased it to 30mg after reading comments on this site. It seemed to work at 30mg nightly. Restoril also gave me strange nightmares and/or hallucinations. I would be in a semi-lucid form of sleep, where I would be paralyzed and could not move my body, and it felt as if something really heavy was holding down the left side of my body, but my mind was awake...pretty scary...  4  Chronic Insomnia Very rarely when I didn't eat dinner I get an exagerated effect that kind of wipes me out - slurred words, stumbly. Have some loss of memory a couple of times a month - not remembering a conversation or TV show before bed. Getting on medication for my sleeping problems was a huge turning point for me when I entered college. I have what could be called "sleep anxiety" - panic going to bed, panic while I am sleeping, nightmares and difficulty staying asleep in general. Since i was about 8. I cycle this on-off with lunesta. I take 30-45 mg temazepam about 20 nights a month. Was on 60mg 25-30 days per month for about 6 years. Never had any real issues except concern of addiction which is why I mix it up now. I take a break from all sleep meds when an opportunity persents itself, and I get rebound insomnia - which for me means i don't sleep at all for a night or so and then I just get crappy sleep for a couple of days and start my meds again...  4  Chronic Slppeing Disorder Fomer 2 1/2 mg of Xanax per day, also 5 - 10mg of Valium Daily. I would alternate between the two once one stopped taking effect. Used to take 4mg of Roche Rofinol (aka Ruffies) Daily. sometimes up to 8mg. Been diagnosed over 12 years. Starting taking 30mg of Restoril, then immediately uppped to 60mg. Now I can take 80mg and still function like normal, as if I drank a couple of glasses of wine. Makes me feel good, and I sleep like a baby. Cannot take Restoril for more than 2 weeks. It's not the high doses I take, but its the acid reflux after I take them. Only there's no acid, on the Restoril med comming back up in a burp. Tastes nasty and leaves a little heart burn. But when you're feeling good, its okay for a small side effect. I wake up feeling like I had a weeks long sleep. The following next 12 hours after I wake up are awesome! Drink some coffee and it feels like the world is yours, no matter how bad things really are. Downside, it's only temp. After 14 days you need to get onto something else because of the reverse chemical reaction. No Sleep, slight mental convulsions (nerves spazzing). But transfer to something soon like a ambemien to tapper off. Not another benzo. That will only prolong the withdraw symptoms. I'm 240 lbs, a well fit body builder, no steroids. Just life stress, i need sleeping meds to get me by. M 33 14 days

3  Insomnia No negative side effects. Relaxed me a little. My doc put me on this to give me a break from Ambien. The Ambien was not working as well after 2 years and he said taking a month off would get be good for me. The tamazepam he prescribed was to help me sleep during this process. Well, I don't know if I am just having Ambien withdrawals, but after taking 30 mgs per night, I have not slept much at all. I don't want to take a higher dose because I don't want a tolerance to that one too. I am very tired, and not totally happy with the results of this drug. It may work better for someone who has never taken a sleep aid before. Just didn't work all that well for me. F 33 7 days

1  insomnia This initially worked well for insomnia, but after three weeks of 15mg, my body started to build a tolerance for it, and it stopped working. I skipped a night, and learned that I'm both tolerant and have a dependency on it, as is common with benzodiazepines. I can't sleep with it and I can't sleep without it--after only three weeks. Be careful! You can get dependent in only three weeks. I am now on a taper-schedule. F 33 25 days

4  Insomnia associated with bipolar Vivid dreams, anxiety dreams, sweating in my sleep. I switched to Restoril after running through pretty much every sleep med on the market. Once I hit the benzo's I started with Serax (too weak) and then Xanax (too much half life + hangover) and was switched to Restoril. I'm not getting fabulous sleep, but I am getting sleep, and more importantly, I'm able to get up and moving in the mornings which I couldn't do previously. F 31 10 weeks

4  insomnia extremely vivid dreams, mostly pleasant I have only taken this drug for 3 nights but so far it has been great! Having had insomnia off and on for years the dr. finally prescribed me trazodone which did not work at all. I didn't like the idea of having to take drugs to sleep and after trazadone figured i was condemned to a life of intermittent zombie sleepless-states. But temazepam worked! someone complained that they still wake, and this does happen to me after about 5 hours, but 5 hours is fantastic for me compared to 0. I haven't taken it long enough to notice any dependence but I do plan to use for a few more days, and hopefully by then i will be reset to better sleep mode and will only have to take it intermittently F 29 3 days

I take 10mg before bed and I sleep like anormal person lol. No hangover atall. And the quality of the sleep is better I feel refreshed on waking. I would recomend this to insomniacsm I had no sideffects infact I feel so much better for finding something to help me sleep I no longer feel worried that I wont sleep and that has helped me too very good so far F 27 3 days

3  insomnia No real side effects. Benzo's are great for insomnia(true insomnia). Use them for 3 weeks, taper, use a different benzo. Seroquel is great but you will gain some weight and it interacts with a lot of other meds. Overall, I like ambien and dalmane the best. Restoril is on my top 5 as well. Everything that helps an insomniac is addictive so use them for 2 to 4 weeks at most and switch. A good doctor will know this method. M 27 10 days
